FROM THE RABBI'S STUDY
RABBI BARRY BLOCK
Dear Friends:
At its February meeting, the Board of
Trustees of Congregation B’nai Israel
adopted a Non-Discrimination Policy:
“WHEREAS Jewish people have historically been among the victims of
hateful discrimination; and
WHEREAS the great Rabbi Hillel taught, “What is hateful to you, do not do
to any person;” and
WHEREAS combatting discrimination is a cherished heritage of
Congregation B’nai Israel; therefore
BE IT RESOLVED that Congregation B’nai Israel does not discriminate on
the basis of real or perceived race, ethnicity, national origin, age (if 18 years
or older), gender, gender identity, gender expression, familial status, marital
status, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, disability veteran
status, cultural background, or political affiliation. In a synagogue, certain
privileges, responsibilities, and positions are reserved for Jews. Congregation
B’nai Israel does not otherwise discriminate on the basis of religion; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, outside of religious institutions,
Congregation B’nai Israel opposes discrimination on the basis of real
or perceived race, ethnicity, national origin, age (if 18 years or older),
gender, gender identity, gender expression, familial status, marital status,
socioeconomic background, religion, sexual orientation, disability, veteran
status, cultural background or political affiliation.”
This policy wasn’t adopted because of any propensity of our Temple to
discriminate. To the contrary, the policy was adopted to facilitate and
strengthen our congregation’s ability to speak out against discrimination in
our society.
Reform Judaism, exemplified by our congregation’s former rabbis and
members, played a leading role in the Civil Rights Movement. Having been
the targets of hateful discrimination in the past, Jews have remained at the
forefront of struggles against present-day discrimination.
Today, the most common targets of discrimination are immigrants, gay
men, lesbians, and transgendered folks. Worse, with respect to the LGBT
community, those who wish to discriminate have too often misused religions
liberty as an excuse to discriminate. In our minds, to do that is a desecration
of the Divine Name, suggesting that G-d wants us to discriminate immorally
on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

FROM THE RABBI'S STUDY continued...
As the Arkansas legislative session drew to a close, I was pleased to join
the Episcopal Bishop of Arkansas, the Presbytery of Arkansas, leaders
of the Methodist Church, and others, speaking out against a so-called
Religious Freedom Restoration Act (HB 1228), that would have
enabled individuals, private business, and even large corporations
to discriminate under the guise of religious freedom. Thankfully,
Governor Hutchinson stepped into the breach, successfully insisting
that a more appropriate Religious Freedom Restoration Act be
adopted instead. Still, without anti-discrimination laws, the potential
remains that even the better law could be abused.
Most people aren’t aware that, in most U.S. states, including Arkansas,
a person can be fired, not hired, or refused promotion for no reason
other than being gay, lesbian, or transgendered.
On Passover, we celebrated our freedom. We proclaimed that nobody
is free until all are free. At this juncture in American life, our religious
values require that we advocate for non-discrimination, bringing
to LGBT Americans and others the freedom that we have come to
cherish as American Jews.
We may all be proud that Congregation B’nai Israel is part of that
sacred struggle.
Faithfully,
Rabbi Barry Block

THE WORLD OF YOUR DREAMS
MAY YOUR EYES SHINE WITH THE LIGHT OF TORAH AND MAY
THE WORLD YOU LIVE IN BE THE WORLD OF YOUR DREAMS.

Contrary to popular belief, Confirmation is alive and well at
Congregation B'nai Israel. This year's service will take place on Erev
Shavuot which happens to fall on Saturday night, May 23rd. I can tell
you that in the past, it has been a delight to spend an evening with
these young people, to listen to them read the Ten Commandments
from the Torah, and to hear them tell us something about themselves
and their relationship to their classmates and the Jewish community.
This got me thinking about how the role of Confirmation has changed
since I was in Confirmation class. In 1966, the year of my Confirmation
(yes, we had received the 10 Commandments by then), this service
was probably the third most attended service of the year (after Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur evening services). The sanctuary on
5th and Broadway was usually packed to overflowing on a Sunday
morning ( when else) with family, friends and fellow Congregants.
The Torah portion was usually read by one of the confirmands (since
there was usually only one who knew how). The reception afterwards
in the old Lasker Auditorium seemed bigger than most wedding
receptions (although everything looked bigger to me back then). And
talk about the presents (and thank-you notes).
So why have things changed so much? Based on a few references
and conversations with Rabbi, I learned that Confirmation in the
Jewish tradition first became popular among the Reform Jews of
Europe in the 19th century as an alternative to the Bar Mitzvah. The
reasons for this were several but included the lack of inclusion of
women at that time. Also it was felt that 13 was a bit too young to
be considered an adult and that more study was required beyond
just the full participation in the Shabbat service. Rather that a Jewish
adult needed to grasp the concept of being a covenant people, a
community of God. The service was chosen to coincide not only
with the traditional timing of the giving of the Law but also because
it occurs conveniently at the end of the academic year during a
festival which is largely lacking in other symbols and customs other
than blintzes and all night study sessions.
Of course the Bar and Bat Mitzvah service has been very much back
in favor in Reform Judaism for the past 40 years as witnessed by the
fact that most of our confirmands have been participants in our bar/
bat mitzvah program. Nevertheless, our current class of six are to be
commended for continuing their religious studies through eighth
grade (Holocaust and Israel), ninth grade (comparative religion) and
tenth grade (social justice and concepts of God).
For these reasons efforts have been made in recent years to return
Confirmation to its previous position of prominence on our
congregation's calendar with the involvement of the Temple Board
and Past Presidents. I'd like to strongly recommend that you attend
this year's Confirmation service to you and as a reward to these young
people and their years of study and to yourselves as well. If you think
they were good when they were 13, you should see them now.
In other boardroom news, coming soon to a meeting near you will
be the rollout of newly adopted Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Confirmation
policies. Nothing to be nervous about, just a restatement of policies
that are pretty much already in place. On May 15th, Mussar master Dr.
Alan Morinis will address the congregation from the Bimah on what
the Seasons of Mussar program that 25 of your fellow congregants have
been involved with these last 3 months could mean to you and your
approach to life. Our first adult B'nai Mitzvah class will be conducting
their service on Saturday morning, May 2nd followed a week later by
the bar mitzvah of Spencer Nodelman.
On Friday, May 29th we will have an abbreviated Shabbat service
followed by dinner and a panel discussion on the evolving plans for
the congregation's 150th anniversary celebration throughout calendar
year 2016. So if you would like to be involved in the planning and/or
participation in this auspicious event, please come on down on that
evening. And in some really exciting news, preparations are underway
for the formation of our congregation's first trip to Israel in a long
time, departing on September 11, 2016 for 10 days. I'd love to see a
full compliment of y'all making the trip with us as part of the 150th
anniversary celebration. Details to follow.
Please share our joy when we are called

Memorial Day Service
A Special Request from Brett Gastman
Sponsored by Jewish War Veterans Post #436
will be held on Friday, May 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery
Do you have used sports equipment that you are no longer using, and
is collecting dust in your garage? I will gladly take it off your hands!
I am collecting items to be donated to the Boys and Girls Club for
my mitzvah project. I need helmets, hats, gloves, bats, baseball mitts,
knee pads, clothing, belts, etc., really anything sports related!
Rabbi Winnick will lead kaddish and flags will be available for
family members to place on graves of their loved one.
Let’s honor David Bauman,
our volunteer music director and board president, as he makes his
Off-Off Broadway debut in The Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre’s
summer production of Fiddler on the Roof at UCA in Conway.
Although Fiddler will be performed 8 times between June 10
and June 27, we in the Temple community would like to fill the
auditorium for the Sunday, June 21, 7:30 PM performance, so make
your reservations early by contacting the AST box office at 1-866810-0012 or online at arkshakes.com. Seats on a bus are available
(at no cost) for those who would find the trip to Conway too
challenging; you can save a seat on the bus simply by contacting the
Temple office at 225-9700.
Don’t fiddle around! Insure that June 21st will be a wonderful
celebration of both old tradition and new traditions by reserving
your place in UCA’s Reynolds Performance Hall for Fiddler on the
Roof. Not only will we honor David on the occasion of his debut,
we will also see two other musical members of the congregation—
violinist Charlie Friedman as the Fiddler and Maddie Bogoslavsky
as Grandmother Tzeitel.
Archives Thursdays at the Temple
Volunteers Chris Barrier, Brian Rosenthal, Phillip Spivey, Gina
Kokes and Phil Axelroth have been working in the Temple archives
Sunday mornings during religious school this year. Much has been
accomplished. Thanks so much to all of them. After Religious School
is over for the year in late May, Archives Thursdays will begin, 9:00
- noon, each Thursday morning. If your schedule permits, stop in on
one or two Thursdays or spend the summer Thursdays helping out!
There are boxes full of history which need sorting, filing and labeling.
The collections vary from women's organizations to Rabbi's papers
to religious school, Temple Youth, Temple business, cemetery, and
the list goes on! Let the Temple office know you are coming so we
have a project ready for you.
Bring your donated items to Religious School and place them in the
box by the front door, which is marked with a neon green sign for
your convenience!
Thank you,
Brett Gastman
6th Grade Religious School Student
A Special Request from Daniel McGrath
Hello, my name is Daniel McGrath, 6th Grade Religious School
Student here at Temple B'nai Israel.
I am currently studying and preparing for my Bar Mitzvah. As part
of that process, my Mitzvah Project is to support the Tikva Odessa
Children's Home in the Ukraine. It is a Jewish Orphanage that houses
and educates at-risk children, along with children who were orphaned
due to war. They offer both regular and Jewish education. I plan to
help put one of the kids through Tikva's Bar/Bat Mitzvah program.
Aside from a financial contribution, during my hockey travels, with
the help of my team, I have been collecting unused/unopened hotel
toiletries. Every night you stay in a hotel, the housekeepers will
replenish the toiletries in your room. I ask that when you travel,
every day that you are in a hotel, please collect these items for me.
Maybe bring an extra baggie along with you to collect them in. There
is a collection box in the Temple foyer where you can deliver the
toiletries. When I am finished collecting, I will ship everything to the
Tikva organization to be delivered directly to the children.
Thank you for your help.

For those New to Mussar Mussar Intensive with Dr. Alan Morinis
Wonder why there's so much buzz and excitement
about Mussar at Congregation B'nai Israel?
Come find out on Sunday morning, May 17, 9:15 a.m. to noon,
when Dr. Morinis will lead a Mussar Intensive workshop for new
students, those who did not participate in Seasons of Mussar I. There
is no charge for this introductory opportunity to engage with Jewish
ethical teachings that are more than 1100 years old and very much
alive today. From humility to patience, orderliness to gratitude,
Mussar helps us to confront how we can purify our souls and become
better human beings. Come learn what Mussar is all about and about
how Mussar might change your life, too!
Dr. Alan Morinis is the Founder and Dean of The Mussar Institute
and author of several books about Mussar, including Climbing Jacob's
Ladder, Everyday Holiness, and With Heart in Mind.
Examine Varying Versions of the
10 Commandments at Late Night
Shavuot Study Session
Did you know that Jews, Catholics and Protestants all have different
listings of the 10 Commandments?
What would your list of “10” be if you read the 10 Commandments
Section of the Torah and tried to make your own list?
Did you know that the two recitations of the 10 Commandments in
the Torah, in Exodus and Deuteronomy, are not identical?
Join Rabbi Block to explore these and more questions about the
10 Commandments on Saturday night, May 23, 9:00 to 11:00 p.m.,
at Tikkun Layl Shavuot, the traditional late night study session for
Shavuot, when we celebrate God’s gift of Torah. We will nourish the
soul with study and the body with delicious dairy treats.
ATTENTION

Course information for Introduction to Jewish Languages
This summer for the first time the UA will offer a new course,
Introduction to Jewish Languages, JWST 3103. The course will
meet M-F, 11:00-12:30 , May 26 - June 26. Students will learn to
read the Hebrew alphabet and gain a basic knowledge of languages
written in that alphabet--Hebrew (ancient and modern), Aramaic,
and Yiddish. The goal of the course is for students to gain a
knowledge of these Jewish languages comparable to the knowledge
that an educated speaker of English has of such phrases as savoirfaire, hasta la vista, and quid pro quo in French, Spanish, and Latin.
The course will be taught by Jacob Adler, Associate Professor of
Philosophy. It is cross-listed as WLLC 398V-011 and WLLC 575V011. No prerequisites.
For more information please contact Dr. Adler at [email protected] or
479-200-1397 (text or phone).
A Studies Minor at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville has
recently received final approval from the Arkansas Department
of Higher Education. Students will be able to enroll in the minor
beginning in August, 2015, though courses that count towards the
minor are already being taught. This summer, Introduction to Jewish
Languages will be offered during the first Summer Session (May 26June 26).
Faculty teaching courses for the minor are drawn from departments
of World Languages and Literatures, Philosophy, History, English
and others. The Jewish Studies faculty are pleased to have the minor
approved as the culmination of years of preparatory work.
For more information, contact Dr. Jennifer Hoyer ([email protected]
or 479-575-2951) or Rabbi Dr. Jacob Adler([email protected]
or 479-200-1397).
Requirements: Students who minor in Jewish Studies will be
required to take JWST 2003 Introduction to Judaism, a 3-credit hour
interdisciplinary course that introduces students to central religious,
cultural, historical, and political questions and ideas in Judaism
and secular Jewish culture. Students must also take an additional
12 credit hours (4 courses) from among the courses listed below, or
other courses approved by the director of Jewish Studies on the basis
of their content and the student’s completion of an appropriate Jewish
Studies project for the class. Student Semester Credit Hours (SSCH)
for each class will count toward the instructor’s home department.

Carrying on “Tradition” in Fiddler on the Roof
The director and members of the cast of Arkansas Shakespeare
Theatre’s Fiddler on the Roof will discuss the process of putting together
their 2015 production. They will comment on the significance this
50-year-old iconic musical still has today, as well as the resonance it
carries for Jews and people of all faiths. They will also provide a sneak
peek of the production.
Congregation B’nai Israel is pleased to welcome Dr. Alan Morinis,
Dean of The Mussar Institute, as our Scholar-in-Residence, May 1517, 2015.
On Friday evening, May 15, during Shabbat evening worship at 6:15
pm, Morinis will preach on “With Heart in Mind: Judaism as a Path
for Personal Change and Growth.”
Alan Morinis is a Rhodes Scholar, anthropologist, filmmaker, writer,
and student of spiritual traditions. He is an active interpreter of the
teachings and practices of the Mussar tradition and regularly gives
lectures and workshops.
Mussar, a Jewish tradition which dates back eleven centuries,
encourages each individual to engage in tikkun middot, repair of
the traits of one’s soul, to achieve holiness and inner peace. Tikkun
middot positions the practitioner to participate more fully in tikkun
olam, repairing the world.
Alan has written books and produced feature films, television
dramas and documentaries and has taught at several universities.
Although he took a deep journey into Hindu and Buddhist thought
and practice, the nearly-lost Jewish spiritual discipline of Mussar
became his passion, a journey recorded in the book Climbing Jacob’s
Ladder. His guide to Mussar practice, entitled Everyday Holiness:
The Jewish Spiritual Path of Mussar, has become an exceptional
resource, illuminating how true spiritual transformation can take
place in our lives one day at a time. He lives in Vancouver, British
Columbia.
Scholar-in-Residence Shabbaton
Following Shabbat services on May 15, those who have participated
in Seasons of Mussar I, led by Rabbi Block beginning in February,
will be invited to attend a Shabbat of learning and sharing with
Alan Morinis. Morinis designed Seasons of Mussar I, as he does all
programs of The Mussar Institute.
The Shabbaton will begin with Shabbat dinner, and continue with
sessions that will run throughout the day on Saturday, including
Shabbat morning worship. After a late afternoon break, the group
will gather again for Havdalah and refreshments with Dr. Morinis.
Spouses and partners are invited to the evening gathering.
The cost of the Shabbaton will be $100 per participant. If the cost
would prohibit your participation, please speak with Rabbi Block
about a scholarship.
The Lifelong Learning program of Congregation B’nai
Israel is supported in part by a generous grant from the
Ottenheimer Brothers Foundation.

Sunday, May 19 – The last day of Religious School
What an outstanding year we’ve had in
Religious School. The teachers brought
their creative ideas and enthusiasm for
Jewish learning to the classrooms every
Sunday. Yes, it’s true that the foundation of
our instruction is the ISJL curriculum to
which we subscribe, but our teachers are
responsible for enlivening the lessons and
giving the curriculum life. They accomplish
this goal by engaging their students in
interesting and fun experiences like the
6th grade garden project that has begun with one raised bed and
will encompass several more. Richard Estelita and his students built
the sustainable garden to experience the responsibility that humans
have been given to care for the earth and serve as God’s stewards.
Through the gardening experience we hope the students will feel a
greater connection to the natural world and bring new meaning to
the brachot that are said over the foods that we eat. Recently, upper
grades teachers, with guidance from Gina Kokes, incorporated
investigations into the families of this Temple through their research
of all of the ritual items given through the years. They connected to
individuals who have contributed time, talent and money as they
uncovered stories related to the contents of the Temple building
and the design. We appreciated the family stories shared by Martha
Alman in her discussion of the portable ark, and Gene P. Levy, the
architect, who designed the current Temple
building. We are also grateful to Beth Levi
who shared her family story related to her
gift of a Megillat Esther to the Temple. Third
graders learned the art of belly dancing in
time for Purim and Seventh graders are
learning about Jewish emigration based on
their and other students’ family stories. They
are learning Jewish history on a personal
level by connecting to their classmates and
their stories.
I am grateful to everyone whose efforts make our program strong
and one of which we can be most proud. Over the summer we will
again explore ways to build onto the ISJL curriculum with interesting
and new experiences. The upcoming 150 year anniversary of
Congregation B’nai Israel will be a major focus. The teachers and I
look forward to exploring the curricular possibilities.

Adult B'nai Mitzvah Chavurah
Once the adults organized to form a class to become Bar or Bat Mitzvah,
they soon decided to become a Chavurah, a circle of friends. They
decided that the group should be more than individual students who
study together. They wanted to use the Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience
to build their own strong community within which they could study,
celebrate holidays and simchas, and develop deep friendships.
The B'nai Mitzvah services will take place on May 1 and May 2.
Everyone is invited to this milestone celebration. The chavurah
decided that it will not disband when the celebration concludes. In
fact, the chavurah wants to grow stronger. Dale and Jealene Cohen,
Richard Estelita, and Rebecca Glover welcome the 2015-16 Adult
B'nai Mitzvah class to join them, offering themselves as mentors and
guides for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah journey ahead. Kol Hakavod to all! If
you have never become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or did it a very long time
ago and want to give it another go, give Ellyn a call.

The Origins of Temple B'nai Israel
This essay is intended to provide a brief historical context for the founding of Temple B'nai Israel in Little Rock in 1866.
The founders had much to be thankful for: First, the recent end of the four
year Civil War which had cost the lives of approximately 750,000 soldiers
(over two percent of the total population of America and several times higher
than the military death rate in all other wars) and an uncounted number of
civilians; Second, the safe return of those founders who had fought for the
Confederacy; and Third, the sparing of Little Rock from the devastation and
starvation suffered in many other parts of the South.
As Richmond, Atlanta, Charleston and Columbia still lay in ruins and
Vicksburg showed the effects of its siege, Little Rock bore no visible scars
because it had surrendered to Union forces three years earlier without a shot
having been fired inside the city. The nearest fighting was a skirmish at Bayou
Fourche several miles away. During the Union occupation, everyday life in
Little Rock continued as usual, and many businesses actually prospered even
though a few homes were looted.
And yet the founders had many reasons for deep concern. The assassination
of President Lincoln and the conflict over the terms of Reconstruction
between his successor Andrew Johnson and the Radical Republicans, who
took control of Congress in the 1866 midterm elections, rendered the future
of Arkansas and the rest of the former Confederacy uncertain. Furthermore,
the creation in the same year in Tennessee of an organization with the odd
name Ku Klux Klan foreshadowed the next century of violence.
In Arkansas, the Conservative party composed of exConfederates
temporarily regained power, but the recent adoption of the Thirteenth
Amendment abolishing slavery everywhere in America and the likelihood of
enactment by Congress of pending legislation imposing military occupation
on the South were sure to have an adverse impact on the plantation based
economy of Arkansas.
The founders were not newcomers to Little Rock. A visitor to the city who
walked down unpaved Main Street, which began at the river and stretched
only four blocks to the south, would have noticed the signs on many
storefronts bearing the names of Jewish owners, names such as Navra, Pfeifer,
Kempner, Ottenheimer, Bott, Rudolph, Pollock and Gans, the ancestors of
many current residents.
Jewish settlers began arriving in Little Rock around 1830 when its total
population numbered only about 450 persons. This was only eleven years
after its designation as the capital of Arkansas Territory and six years before
statehood.
The first Jews to arrive were the Mitchell brothers Hyman, Levi and Jacob
who emigrated from Galicia, then a German province, later part of Poland,
and now within the Ukraine. They became successful merchants selling
crockery. Jacob later purchased an interest in land now part of Hot Springs
National Park, a hotel close by and a stagecoach line running twice a week
between Little Rock and Hot Springs.
All of the Jewish settlers in Arkansas from the 1830s through the 1850s
were Ashkenazim from the German principalities. Some came down the
Ohio and Mississippi Rivers while others made the journey north from
New Orleans. They were seeking trading opportunities along the Southwest
Trail which began in St Louis, crossed the Arkansas River at Little Rock and
terminated in Texas.
During the period of three and a half decades between the arrival of the
Mitchell brothers and the founding of Temple B'nai Israel, the Jewish
population of Little Rock increased to several hundred with a corresponding
growth in its religious and social life. Comparatively, the Jewish population
of Cincinnati was 10,000 in 1859.
The first house of worship was established on Markham Street around 1845.
Jonas Levy, who sold fire and marine insurance, acted as the Rabbi and
performed marriages. He had arrived in Little Rock accompanied by his
mother and two brothers, one of whom died soon thereafter and became
the first Jew to be buried in Pulaski County.
Jonas Levy's other brother, Isaac, operated a successful dry goods business
before the Civil War, served as a Confederate soldier, and continued
his business after the war. He had achieved a reputation for honesty by
returning to the rightful owner a large sum in gold coins that had been
mistakenly hidden in a box of merchandise that he had purchased.
During the 1850s, the Navra brothers, Morris and Abe, moved from
Vicksburg to Little Rock. Morris opened a candy store, Abe a tea and fruit
shop. Another newcomer at that time was Frederick Kramer, who later
served as mayor.
The next decade began auspiciously with the inception of railroad and
telegraph service. In October of 1860, the Arkansas Jewish Burying Society
was organized with Morris Navra as President. It purchased several lots in
Mount Holly Cemetery, but about two weeks later the election of Abraham
Lincoln put America on the road to war.
During the Civil War, an "elite" Jewish social organization called the Little
Rock Club was formed. It later changed its name to the Concordia Club
and hosted former President Grant in 1880 with a ball in his honor.
Jews in Little Rock, Pine Bluff, and Helena established Congregations in the
years right after the war. The Pine Bluff group bought a lot in May of 1866
and celebrated the laying of the cornerstone for the Temple with a parade
downtown in October of that year.
On September 2 of the same year, a group of men met in Little Rock to
form a "temporary Jewish organization for the purpose of worshipping
during the coming holy days." Some of its founders were among the 3,000
Jews who had served in the Confederate military: Morris Navra (elected as
the first President), Isaac Levy, Samuel Lyons, Phillip Pfeifer (wounded in
battle), Abraham Ottenheimer, Phillip Ottenheimer, Isaac Bott, Herman
Ehrenberg, Abraham Kempner, Simon Gans, Abraham Pollock, and
Louis Vollmer. They referred to their house of worship as "the Hebrew
Congregation of Little Rock."
In March of the next year, the Hebrew Congregation of Little Rock
was incorporated by Act 165 of the 1867 Arkansas Legislature as the
"Congregation of the Children of Israel." Four months later the Hebrew
equivalent "Congregation B'nai Israel" was adopted. Not until several years
later did the current name of Temple B'nai Israel come into use.
Ironically, the Pine Bluff Congregation was incorporated by the Legislature
five days before the incorporation of Temple B'nai Israel.
In conclusion, I would like to acknowledge that this essay is based
almost entirely on information contained in the comprehensive history
of Arkansas Jewry, "A Corner of the Tapestry," by the late Carolyn Gray
LeMaster and in the Centennial booklet published in 1966 by Temple B'nai
Israel, not on my own archival research. However, Jim Pfeifer did research
the Temple archives regarding the evolution of the name of the Temple and
kindly provided me with that information. Any error in the interpretation
of the information is mine alone. Marianne Tettlebaum read a prior draft
and made several helpful suggestions.
