This is a special hello – to Summer, our old
friend with whom we usually feel we have
lost touch but when it arrives it’s like
we’ve never been apart. We are great at
getting straight into the summer mindset
– immediately the sandals (sans socks
please!), summer’s clobber and sunglasses
are out and we all act as though it is the
norm. So, fingers crossed this old friend is as
up for the Frome Festival as we are! There is so
much to be involved in – workshops, music, theatre
and comedy – it’s a week which promises so much for us lucky
enough to be in the Frome area. Don’t forget the Frome Festival Feast which marks
the beginning of the festival. It begins at 5.30pm in the Market Yard. Get ready for
incredible food stalls and refreshing alcohol and soft drinks, along with music from
Acoustic Plus – the perfect way to start off the festival in true Frome style.
Find more details on the festival, as well as the many other brilliant events in
the area for July, inside. Our Cover Stars are the eye catching Apple Build &
Design – full feature on page 10 & 11.

Frome Open Studios
Home of the Unique
Artists of Frome are feverishly adding finishing
touches to their work, ready to exhibit for visitors to
the Frome Artists Open Studios.
The innovative and brilliantly clever work to be found in the
town is astounding. Buying local, handmade items can be a
much more rewarding experience than items that are mass
produced and lack individuality. Wearing inspired jewellery
made by a local designer is a great feeling, especially when you know that it is
a one-off; beautiful paintings will tell their story for a lifetime, and serving up
something tasty to guests in a handmade, ceramic bowl is always satisfying.
If
The importance of buying local and supporting artists is a commonly held ideal.
But, when you enjoy the benefits of living in an area as stuffed-full of creative
talent as we do, you must support it to continue to enjoy it. The 68 locally
based artists have worked their socks off to ensure a feast for the eyes and are
looking forward to showing off their artistry over the Frome Festival weekends:

COVER STORY
Apple Build & Design
Creating Beauty-full homes
It
can often seem a daunting task when considering having work
done on your home. Who to call? Will they understand what
you want and how you want the work to be carried out?
Builders have a reputation for disappointing, often leaving the client
feeling let down. Apple want to change this. They understand that your
home and working environment are intrinsic to the way you live your life.
Their aim is to take the stress out of building work by offering a highly
professional and personal service, turning a process you initially may fear,
to one you enjoy being involved in.
building services

we create beauty-full homes
Apple Build & Design are a building and design company who love creating
beautiful homes, and they believe that true service should be at the heart of
any building company. They are known for their high quality craftsmanship
and stunning design, and for building a working relationship with their
customers, where good communication and a calm environment is a given.
From the project manager to the carpenter, the interior designer to the
electrician, Apple Build & Design is a collection of people who share a
passion for creating and building beautiful things. Apple believes that
simplicity is the key. By integrating all trades and skills under one roof,
they are able to provide a clear vision for each project from start to finish,
minimising misunderstandings and mistakes, and successfully carrying out
your project, letting you get on with your life.
Where the Apple people really come into their own is their incredible
eye for detail. They have innovative design ideas which make each job
highly individual. In conjunction with their interior design service, styling
individual rooms, houses or commercial proper ties, Apple also offers a
house doctor service, presenting you with creative and practical ideas,
giving you the best way to deliver your home, both inside and out,
whether to live in now, to work towards in the future, or to improve your
chances of securing a future house sale.
Though Apple does not guarantee to be cheaper than another local builder,
its guarantee is in the design, craftsmanship and enjoyment of the process.
Our approach to our work is based on high quality
craftsmanship, good design and building a working
relationship with our customers, where good
communication and a calm environment is a matter
of course.
Driven to deliver value for money, we price competitively
and aim to fit your budget. We specialize in renovations
and refurbishments for all types of properties.

Fairtrade Frome
Tea ’n’ Cake
Since its birth twelve years ago, Fairtrade Frome has gone from strength to
strength, directly helping vulnerable communities, enhancing the lives of children
and adults through education, healthcare and improved living conditions.
If you want good food and fine china at an engagement with friends, a big
family bash or you’d like to learn how to create your own afternoon tea
party then Tea ‘n’ Cake can help.
Always active throughout the Frome social calendar, they return to the
Frome Street Food Festival with their refreshment stand, so you can enjoy a
delicious glass of local farm-pressed apple juice, award-winning White Hole
water, a full-bodied red or a crisp chilled white Fairtrade wine.
“Our tea parties are for everyone. We help our customers make their event their own,
using ideas from any era and combining them with personal touches. It allows people to
be creative and surprise their guests,” says Tamsin, owner and founder of the business
Get involved with the Fairtrade movement
They would love to hear from local businesses using Fairtrade products, too.
It’s easy to be included on their popular website, or to be nominated for a
Fairtrade Award – just drop by for a chat or pick up a leaflet to find out more.
Standing up against child slave labour and exploitation of workers, the
Fairtrade Foundation continues to work for trade justice, fair wages, access to
education and healthcare for all. If you believe in these values then Fairtrade
Frome could be for you. They welcome new members with open arms.
Find out how easy it is to make small changes in your daily choices that have
a huge impact on the lives of farmers and workers abroad. So many everyday
items are now Fairtrade – many are foods but there are also more unusual
goods like clothing and footballs. Discover the businesses in Frome who
support and sell Fairtrade goods. The philosophy of ‘if you can’t buy local then
buy Fairtrade - act locally, think globally’ is certainly one that we support.
Refreshing local soft drinks and Fairtrade wines
available to complement the fabulous food on offer at
the Food Feast on Saturday 5th July in The Market Yard.
The food feast stall is selling - Fairtrade red wine,
chilled white wine, cold local White Hole Water and
local farm pressed apple juice.
D I Y Vintage Style Afternoon Tea
If you fancy a vintage themed hen party, for example, Tamsin can provide the
vintage china, champagne saucers and tea-based cocktail recipes (Earl Grey
Martini anyone?). She has also teamed up with local beauty therapist Linda
Tandy at the Townhouse Retreat, to provide a pamper package to help you
and your friends withdraw to a more glamorous era for a while.
An award-winning baker, the menus that Tamsin has created for Tea ‘n’ Cake
reflect her love of classic British recipes but with some stylish, contemporary
additions. Cakes range from old favourites like Victoria sponge to more
exotic treats such as rose and pistachio cake.
And now you can learn how to do it yourself. Having moved into new
premises, Tea ‘n’ Cake have opened their very own cookery school, offering
courses from how to create the perfect afternoon tea to adding more unique
recipes to your repertoire. So if you want to learn how to bake in a relaxed
and supportive atmosphere, and of course eat a lot of cake whilst doing it,
then please contact Tea ‘n’ Cake.

Cooper Hall
At The Frome Festival
is based in the grounds of a private home, Selwood Manor on
the outskirts of Frome. Originally intended as an entertainment
annexe for the family it was donated for use by Frome Festival
for just 2 classical recitals in 2012.
Cooper
Hall
A fine grand piano was the catalyst for slowly and organically developing this
creative haven which over the past couple of years has revealed itself to be a
much welcome and valuable part of the town’s rich cultural landscape.
“We had no idea when we first built the hall - which was originally going to be used just
by the professional musicians in the family and for private teaching purposes - that we
would be approached by the community wanting to use the space.
It has been a huge decision and commitment to offer this extension of our home out
to the public – but we reap the rewards every time someone attends a workshop or
concert here, and are thrilled and encouraged by the loyal and enthusiastic support
we receive for all our events,” explains Creative Director, Morag McLaren.
Established as a Charitable Trust in 2013, The Cooper Hall Foundation supports
the work of emerging artists and offers a small, yet broad range of workshops,
events and concerts. From classical to folk, jazz to opera, the bright acoustic , warm
and welcoming environment has proved a real hit with local audiences and is now
attracting interest from much further afield, establishing itself as a real “hidden gem”
enjoyed by performers and audiences alike.

Acoustic four-piece Salt House is the meeting of four distinct musical minds on
the Scottish scene. Their highly current sound is earthy, deep-rooted, yet eagerly
progressive, built from grassroots folk with contemporary influences. 2013 saw the
release of their debut ‘Lay Your Dark Low’ described as “the multifaceted work of a
significant new collective” (The Herald). Boasting previous winners of BBC Young Folk
Awards, a Scottish Jazz Award and many titles at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards,
they now join together to make “a seamless team” (The Guardian). Their reworking of
old ballads sits alongside their own writing and the instrumental section wraps Siobhan
Miller’s striking, Scottish voice in a myriad of musical colour and textures.

The accordion is probably most closely identified with
folk music from Eastern Europe and South America, but
the young Lithuanian virtuoso Martynas Levickis aims to
prove that it can make all kinds of music, everywhere. His
debut album on Decca is a riotous ride through a rainbow
of styles, all of them artfully tailored and arranged to show
off Martynas’s brilliant playing. From Beethoven to Vivaldi,
Ennio Morricone to Lady Gaga, he takes the accordion
around the world and back and forth across the centuries.

Sunday 6th Violin virtuoso Billy Thompson is bringing his
immensely popular Gypsy Jazz style to the Rook Lane Arts,
promising a night of high energy, soulful musicianship and
panache. Men in General, a five- piece force of male vocal
antics will perform on Saturday 12th. Described as: “The Goons of Harmony,
A cappella at its best- and much more, Droll, witty chat and lovely, uplifting
music.” Fake Thackray closes the festival on Sunday 13th at Rook Lane. John
Watterson performs the songs of the great Jake Thackray. Exquisitely funny,
satirical, incisive, irreverent, witty and gloriously un-PC - and sometimes all of
these at the same time.

Traditional Tibetan Medicine
comes to Mells
Tibetan Doctor Amchi Tsetan returns to Mells this August,

Amchi Tsetan was born in Tibet in 1954, into a lineage of
traditional Tibetan doctors who have preserved and handed
down this ancient wisdom for generations.

Angela says, “In Germany, 80% of his patients are doctors or in the medical
profession, placing their faith in his ancient wisdom, based on results. The wonderful
alchemy of these precious methods brings healing and happiness in their wake.”
Tibetan medicine aims to restore homeostasis, the balance between the inner
and outer environment. Tsetan combines his knowledge with compassion,
intuition and perception, pulse diagnosis and gentle questioning, to ascertain
any imbalance which may influence our mental, emotional and physical state.

Angela explains, “Dr Tsetan offers nutritional advice and a unique insight into each
individual situation with profound results. Using an excellent pharmacopeia sourced
in the pure unpolluted Himalayan region, he prescribes unique combinations of
medicinal herbs, semi precious stones, purified metals and minerals according to
patients individual needs. The medicines contain no animal matter.”

Market Yard Frome BA11 1BE 01373 455420
Hark! Round the curve chuffs the Frome Festival
express, whistle blowing and pistons flashing, steam and
eccentricity hissing from every orifice. And hallelujah! - for
the first time in years the festival features jazz from two
of the town’s most cherishable citizens, playing together
on the same stage. Loose Tubes saxophonist Iain Ballamy
and pianist John Law are notable composers and both
are world class performers. So snap up tickets for their
Cooper Hall concert while you still can.
But don’t despair if you can’t. At present, Frome and district heaves with
jazz talent. You are barely able to cross the road without bumping into some
major or minor improviser, from the bloke who doodles on the clarinet
in Cheap Street to the undeniably great Pee Wee Ellis, late of Bradenton,
Florida, and now a local resident. He learned sax with Sonny Rollins, played
with James Brown and Van Morrison, and still blasts it out titanically. As one
colleague said, Pee Wee makes “funk sound jazzy and jazz sound funky”.
That’s now. But what about the past? If you shut your eyes and think hard
enough, you may imagine the shades of jazz legends flitting through our
streets in the Thirties and Forties, forgotten and unsuspected. Did Fats
Waller demolish two entire chickens at one sitting in the George Hotel?
Was Duke Ellington, passing through on the band bus at midnight, moved to
compose an Orchardleigh Suite? Did Bill Evans spend a lost weekend here,
seduced by the cider at the Lamb and Fountain? Is there in some vault a
never-issued recording of Milk Street Blues by Louis Armstrong and his Hot
Five? Did Billie Holiday find strange fruit in the Saturday market?
A cold realist would say certainly not, don’t be ridiculous: until recent
years the only music stars seen in Frome would have been Craig Douglas,
Les Golledge, the Wombles and the Wurzels (unless you count all those
unspeakable tribute bands). But I like to think differently, because Frome
is just the sort of place where myth defies reality. As someone else said in
1955: “They told me Charlie Parker died, but I don’t have to believe it if I don’t want to”.
