June - The List Frome
3 CHEESE & GRAIN HELLO Rose Langley, Editor THE DAMNED FRIDAY 5TH JUNE In May Frome chose a new Mayor. We wave goodbye to Peter MacFadyen and thank him for all his hard work and varied mayoral chains, and welcome in Kate Bielby. We can’t wait to see what Kate has up her sleeve for the year ahead and wish her all the best! Putting together this issue has been really exciting because there is just so much to tell you about. We have the lowdown on five fantastic local festivals: Iford Arts Festival, The Village Pump, Farmfest, The Larmer Tree and, of course, our cover star the utterly smashing Frome Festival. I’d love to know if there are any other small towns whose annual festival boasts such a varied array of acts and activities. This year you can see hip-hop pioneers The Sugar Hill Gang one day, a stonking performance of Mozart’s opera Cosi fan Tutti the next. Satisfy a curious and creative mind with visits to the Open Gardens and Open Studios and then pop off to learn Indian Head Massage. For me the Frome Festival is perfect because it is inclusive – there is something for everyone, just like Frome! A SUMMER OF SHAKESPEARE pre-show suppers • NOW AT The Merlin Theatre merlintheatre 40 England’s greatest ever playwright has found a new home in Frome’s Bringing you a new series of live broadcasts from Shakespeare’s home town WED 22 JULY WED 26 AUG Merlin Theatre with a new series of WED 21 OCT Royal Shakespeare Company plays streamed direct from Stratford-onAvon. These new live screenings are an exciting new venture for us and we’re hoping they’ll be as enthusiastically received as the National Theatre Live screenings we launched last year. This summer we kick off the RSC series with two of Shakespeare’s most provocative plays, The Merchant of Venice on 22 July and Othello on 26 August. Then in October there’s a screening of Henry V starring Alex Hassell In the melting pot of Venice, trade is God. With its ships plying the globe, the city opens its arms to all, as long as they come prepared to do business and there is profit to be made. Othello is the greatest general of his age – a fearsome warrior and defender of Venice against its enemies. But he is also an outsider whose victories have created enemies of his own. Henry IV is dead and Hal is King. With England in a state of unrest, he must leave his rebellious youth behind, striving to gain the respect of his nobility and people. It’s a great way to see the best of British theatre without having to leave Frome, and the Merlin has the benefit of being a real theatre with all the trimmings – bar, comfortable seats with plenty of legroom, pre-show suppers and even free parking – making the experience a truly theatrical one. Our National Theatre Live series continues in the autumn with Tom Hiddleston’s Coriolanus in September, then Benedict Cumberbatch fans may find it difficult to resist his Hamlet – sold out in record time when it launched in London – in October. If all this heavyweight drama is too much there are the comedies too: A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Taming of the Shrew, performed live Live in the ECOS amphitheatre by touring companies Quantum and Illyria. For details on all these productions go to www.merlintheatre.co.uk. Jewellery making workshop with Christina Oswin 12 THE COVER STORY FROME FESTIVAL 2015 F R I DAY 3 R D - S U N DAY 12T H THE Frome Festival returns on Friday July 3rd with a ten-day programme packed with more events and activities than ever. Miracle Theatre will return to the Merlin, or hopefully the ECOS Amphitheatre next door if weather permits, with their wonderful staging of The Magnificent Three on Tuesday 7th July. Fans of the band Squeeze will be delighted to get the chance to hear the hugely entertaining singer songwriter Glenn Tilbrook in the Merlin’s intimate setting. His solo versions of Up the Junction; Black Coffee in Bed; Tempted and Pulling Mussels from a Shell are reminders of song writing at its best. Rook Lane Arts hosts a programme of outstanding talks and literary events, including, on Sunday 12th July, a presentation by folk singer Shirley Collins, who discusses her work as a writer and “song-hunter”, which led to her book America Over the Water, charting her musical odyssey into the Deep South. Cooper Hall at Selwood Manor has rapidly become a favourite place for Frome Festival goers in the last few years. As part of a terrific programme, renowned opera singer Morag McLaren, Patron of the Frome Festival, will once again direct a fully professional opera in this idyllic setting. This year it will be Mozart’s highly popular Cosi fan Tutti on Friday 3rd and Sunday 5th July, featuring the Bath Phil Orchestra. Among the big names appearing in this year’s newly designed brochure, there are three music events at the Cheese and Grain that look set to be immensely popular. On Friday 3rd July, nationally renowned DJ Mr. Scruff, will headline an opening night party extending until 2.00am. The following Friday, the 10th, the Hoosiers will present a set comprising their hit singles and songs from their memorable number one album The Trick to Life. On Saturday 11th July, true legends visit Frome. The Sugarhill Gang were hip hop’s first superstars and pioneers. Rapper’s Delight was a massive international success for the New Yorkers, who will be appearing at the Frome Festival as part of a UK-wide tour. The Merlin Theatre will host a varied and high quality programme throughout the Festival that includes Olivier award winner Sara Kestelman appearing with poet Leo Aylen in the delightfully entertaining The Trouble with Women is Men on Sunday 5th July. Shakespeare is the theme of the Swan Theatre’s touring presentation The Second Best Bed, appearing at the Merlin on Thursday 9th July, and featuring Liz Grand as Anne Hathaway. This makes an excellent companion piece to Frome Drama Club’s threenight run of the play Mrs. Shakespeare from 2nd July at the Silk Mill. The comedy headline act at the Merlin is Romesh Ranganathan on Friday 3rd July. Instantly recognizable, Romesh has come a long way since winning the Leicester Mercury New Act Award 2013. His achievements culminated in a debut appearance on BBC2’s Mock the Week, BBC1’s Live at the Apollo and many other popular shows. The Silk Mill has also got a packed programme, including two daytime puppet shows by Noisy Oyster on Saturday 11th July. Top of the list for free events has to be the Frome Food Feast in the Market Yard on Saturday 4th July, with more food stalls than ever for the thousands of visitors who flock to the town. Workshops will run throughout the Festival, ranging from music tuition and poetry writing to Indian head massage and lip balm making. Walks and talks return with some familiar and popular themes including, of course, the Frome Tunnels. Hidden gardens, open studios and exhibitions at Black Swan Arts, Rook Lane, the Silk Mill and the Museum, amongst others, serve as a reminder that the Frome Festival celebrates every art form in style. A new website and app are now live, and brochures are now also available. Tickets are currently available for events at the Cheese & Grain and the Merlin. 14 15 LARMER TREE FESTIVAL 25 YEARS ON AND IT’S B E T T ER T H A N E V ER ! Bringing opera at an affordable price to Frome has always been an ambition of Morags, who is also the Founder and Creative Director of Cooper Hall. “Opera is often viewed as elitist, and part of what we are aiming to achieve with our programming here is to make high quality performance as accessible as possible. This is our third year of presenting opera in our intimate space and this year we will be performing Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte with an exceptional young, professional cast and Bath Phil. Mozart’s much loved comic masterpiece, encompasses sublime music, love, lust, desire, and deception. The story still resonates very strongly today reflected in the way young people portray themselves and meet via social media, so our production will be played out in a modern setting - blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. The production is sung in English and the audience can expect a very contemporary take on a classic operatic romp!” explains Morag. We played it at The Frome Independent last May, and old Tezzer’s sonorous tones sent Lucy (Russ’s better half) into labour! The summer of 2015 will see Farmfest turn the ripe old age of 10 and as you would expect they will be going big on the celebrations – expect giant party games, overblown site decorations, enormous cake and massive fancy dress. The celebrations will see plenty of special events, new stages and one or two surprises which are being kept firmly under the Farmfest hat. Further additions to Farmfest’s big birthday party include Wah Wah 45s’ The Gene Dudley Group bringing their deep soul and funk flavour, orchestral indie-folk courtesy of Moulettes, Scottish spoken word electronics maestro Jonnie Common, talented songstresses Toyface and Rozi Plain plus Glasgow’s latest prodigy C Duncan. FREE PEA, BROAD BEAN & TARRAGON SOUP with Jo & Clare from Kitchen Table Cookery The crunch and snap and green smell of freshly podded peas, popped straight into the mouth, is a true mid-summer pleasure. The delicate yet tasty shoots and tendrils are a pretty addition to salads. In fact we regularly plant a packet of seeds in a large pot, and simply pull up the whole young plant wash and add to a salad, a great thing to do with kids. Annual 2015/16 Peas seem to be happy partners with almost everything - hot with butter and mint, warm with a squeeze of lemon and a glug of good olive oil then piled on toast with crumbled feta, and one of our favourites, cooked for a couple of minutes, refreshed in cold water and thrown bright green into a salad with hot bacon and lettuce. 250g shelled broad beans or (frozen baby ones are fine) knob ghee or coconut oil (or butter) 2 medium onions chopped fine sea salt 3 garlic cloves, chopped SERVES 4 670ml chicken stock 250g shelled peas (frozen are fine) 1 small bunch of tarragon 1 tbls freshly squeezed lemon juice grated zest of 1/2 organic lemon Heat the ghee in a medium saucepan, add the onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for 5 minutes until beginning to soften and add the garlic. After a couple of minutes add the broad beans and the stock. Bring to a simmer until beans are cooked, about 10 minutes. Add the peas and cook for about 2 to 3 minutes until bright green. Blend. Add 1/2 the tarragon plus lemon juice and zest and blend till completely smooth. Check the seasoning and add more salt if needed. Serve straight away, decorated with a few shelled broad beans, some tarragon leaves and pea shoots. The UK’s first ‘sharing’ shop has recently opened on the bridge in Frome, attracting national media attention (including The Guardian, The Week and a potential BBC documentary). The shop offers a wide range of items, from tools to toys to cooking equipment, instruments and even a chocolate fountain! The items are lent or donated to the shop by local residents and can be borrowed for a donation. THE H E A LT H & W E L L B E I N G 25 ARE YOU READING THIS? So are thousands of others! To reach them, you might want to advertise your business with The List Frome - We are the only magazine in Frome to print 5,000 issues every month - get in touch and see how we can help your business get seen. [email protected] Anna Francis, Energy and Recycling Officer at Frome Town Council, said, ‘The average electric drill is used for just 13 minutes in its lifetime and produces 45 kgs of carbon in its production. By sharing items, we hope to reduce waste and carbon, as well as saving people money and storage space. We really want the shop to be as useful as possible so do bring us any items you think might be shareable and do pop in to see what we’ve got. We also need volunteers, even an hour or so every now and again would be brilliant. The shop even has a kids’ space and reading / tea area, so it’s a great place to hang out.’ Frome Mayor Peter Macfadyen, who officially opened the shop, said, ‘Frome is becoming a sharing town: from sharing electric cars via the car club, to sharing land at Whatcombe Fields to this amazing Share Shop. It’s fantastic to see more and more people getting involved. A sharing community will be more resilient in the face of ongoing cuts.’ A team of eight apprentices from Edventure have worked tirelessly to set up the shop from scratch in just 6 weeks, with funding and support from Frome Town Council. The shop is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from midday until 6pm, and on Saturdays from 10am until 4pm. Our first project aims to pay investors 6% return, 30% tax break through EIS, it will save 2,000 tonnes of carbon and generate income for the community fund, so it’s good for the planet and your pocket.’ FRECo has ambitious plans to enable Frome to become zero carbon in electricity over the next 10-15 years. Peter Andrews, who is a director of FRECo and Bath and West Community Energy said, ‘We aim to raise another £10m for renewable projects in and around Frome in the next five years or so. We’ve done this in Bath now and know that Frome can do it, too. As well as all the financial benefits, this will generate around £150,000 a year to invest in local environmental projects. In the Pyrenees, he got headaches and nosebleeds. In the Sierra Nevada, he had dizzy spells. In the Slovenian Alps, he threw a fit and had to be winched off the mountainside by helicopter and flown to hospital. They examined him physically and mentally and found nothing wrong with him. He blamed it all on the psychological trauma of walking higher than 2,000 metres, or maybe an allergy to brazil nuts. His nerve at altitude was never quite the same again. Nevertheless last month he came with us to hike amid the pointy peaks of Catalunya. Proudly, he showed off his latest piece of walking kit – a water bottle which, he boasted, could not leak or break, and which had cost a lot of money. And so we set off, nursing him up the slopes in searing heat towards a summit which was barely 1,500 metres above sea level. Orchids and gentians edged the pathway. An ibex peered down at us insouciantly from an unclimbable rock. Far below, a nightingale sang. Far above, a golden eagle floated, the fierce sun glinting off its back. It was all very pleasant. Then came the path back to the bottom. To our surprise (we’re not climbers) this included inching down a vertical cleft onto a series of narrow platforms, the abyss yawning beneath. The two most experienced walkers went ahead to guide the rest of us down into suitable foot- and hand-holds. Soon it was Diggle’s turn. He took a good swig at his unleakable water bottle, shoved it in his pack and bent over to begin his trembling descent. Immediately the expensive bottle fell out, pinged off the rock face and spun away into the void. This was not a good start. We watched Diggle closely for signs of his usual panic, but he kept on crabbing his way downwards without protest to the first platform, then the second, then the third. At last he was on less vertiginous ground, waterless and pale but resolute. We all cheered inwardly. This would be remembered as the day when Diggle lost his bottle – but not his bottle.
