Cerebral Palsy of Virginia Picture placeholder 2014 Impact Report How would I describe Cerebral Palsy of Virginia’s 2014? Fruitful. Impactful. Exceptional. Just like the reward of a rainbow after a storm, triumph awaits on the other side of trying times. The people we serve and their families face many challenges, and Cerebral Palsy of Virginia is there to help every step of the way. Together we combine strengths to overcome obstacles, and together we celebrate our victories. 2014 was a year of numerous achievements. We welcomed new people to our programs, leveraged record volunteer contributions, expanded service offerings, secured new adaptive equipment, and addressed much needed facility improvements. I’m excited to share more about each of these accomplishments in this Impact Report. We provide programs that allow the people we serve to participate in their community; we take care of the caregivers; and we advocate. At Cerebral Palsy of Virginia no one is ever turned away due to inability to pay. Philanthropy makes our commitment to this principle possible, and to our donors we extend our utmost gratitude. I invite you to join us in another year of improving the quality of life for people in Virginia with intellectual and developmental disabilities. How would I describe our outlook for 2015? Inspired. Determined. Ready. Sincerely, Michelle Majority Executive Director I believe we will look back at 2014 as a year in which CP of VA began a critical transformation. Michelle and her team have managed to squeeze every drop out of the proverbial CP turnip and somehow still find a way to give just a little more. Due to the level, content and inclusiveness of the services being offered by the organization, the demand from the community has been overwhelming. Our organization’s name, Cerebral Palsy of Virginia, only touches the surface of the valuable assistance we are providing. Today, CP of VA is assisting a diversified mix of intellectual and developmental disabilities within its facilities and extending out into OUR community. Our ability to meet these needs is highly dependent on our wonderful donors, volunteers and leadership. This is truly a collection of people with great passion for both their community and our members. This commitment was self evident in 2014 with record dollars raised from donors, pledges, grants and programs. We are incredibly proud of the impact this has made. The greatest of all is that CP of VA continues to be a “boots on the ground effort” with almost every dollar raised going directly back to the program. I believe 2015 will be a year in which we will continue to see unwavering commitment and vision to take CP of VA to the next level. There is important work to be done and challenges to be met: to better represent the members we serve while developing an action plan that will NEVER have to decline another member in need due to a lack of infrastructure or resources. We will do this by empowering our partners, donors, board and stakeholders to participate in these efforts. Together we will paint the future vision for CP of VA. We have much to do in 2015 and I invite you to join our team. WE can do this. WE have to do this; our incredible members need us today and tomorrow. Grab a brush, lets go paint a future, Dave Kilby President 2014 Highlights 520 PEOPLE SERVED Celebrating 30 years 89 Summer Campers Ages 7-76 VOLUNTEER HOURS Launch of ArtWorks, an art therapy program IMPACT 3,500 55 family caregivers given a night off 847 tickets to community engagements 22nd Annual 5K Run & Walk-A-Thon 1ST ANNUAL BREWS, BANDS and BBQ (& OYSTERS TOO!) EVENTS 21st Annual Golf Tournament RUN FOR THE ROSES Summer Camp Enrichment While children celebrate the end of the school year, many parents know the final dismissal is their call to play part-time chauffer for the summer, and scramble to get kids from one camp to the next. Parents of children with disabilities face this same dilemma, but have limited options for summer enrichment activities. Adults with disabilities who engage in seasonal day programs often have a summer gap as well. To avoid a home-bound summer, CP of VA’s Summer Camp Enrichment Program provides the opportunity for youth and adults with disabilities to develop skills, interact with peer volunteers with or without disabilities, and engage in community outings. Camp activities range from entertainment such as bowling, to educational adventures such as a exploring the museum; all are fun and memorable. Perhaps one of the greatest takeaways is the friendships cultivated. Experiencing all the Hampton Roads community has to offer is one of the most exciting components of camp. Due to financial limitations of many of the families served, these excursions are exclusive to their camp experience. All campers attending Summer Camp need financial assistance. Volunteering at Summer Camp was an unforgettable experience and a privilege. My favorite part was the friendships that I made with campers. Volunteering at CP of VA’s Summer Camp is a great way to give back to the community and support a wonderful organization. ~ Clara Daulton We collaborate with local nonprofits and corporate partners to secure reduced-fee or in-kind venues, presenters and materials. Volunteers are also cornerstones, and the benefits are symbiotic. A dynamic youth volunteer program provides education, and in turn acceptance, understanding and advocacy, about those with disabilities. In 2014, forty-eight volunteers contributed 1,745 hours to Summer Camp. Adult Day Social and Recreation Our day program is a conduit to community participation, and personal growth. On-site activities include current events discussions, therapeutic arts and crafts, music and dance, and games. Our goal is to promote an independent living environment, and develop skills for self-determination. Most days include a community-based activity to promote civic inclusion. By participating in activities outside the home, the people we serve engage in their community as involved citizens. In 2014, CP of VA invested in much-needed facility improvements and equipment acquisition to allow for enhanced accommodation and increase in participants. A renovated fully-accessible restroom ensures safety and comfort; new ergonomic tables and chairs allow for expanded activity options and comfort. CP of VA’s Adult Day Program gives Cary a since of belonging – somewhere to spend time with others who are just as individual and special as he is. CP of VA feels like our extended family and we are thankful for them in every way. ~ Tracey Rascoe, sister of Cary Boothe I feel that I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to give back by volunteering with Cerebral Palsy of Virginia. It allows me to help others to succeed in achieving more of their life's goals, and also to help provide their family members with much needed assistance. Volunteering gives me the opportunity to learn about myself and those around me as well as help me to build new relationships. ~ Lisa Lawson, volunteer Weekend Social & Recreation PROM 2014 The tickets have allowed us to bring my daughter to Broadway shows, the circus, sporting events and other performances. Most shows are discounted enough so the whole family can go together. ~ Kim Fiedorczyk 2014 Activities: Norfolk Admirals · Chicago on Broadway at Chrysler Hall · Harlem Globetrotters · Ringling Brothers · Barnum & Bailey Circus · Disney Frozen on Ice · Bowling · Marvel Universe Live · Wicked on Broadway · 2nd Annual Prom · Holiday Party One in five Americans has a disability, whether it be intellectual, physical, or the result of aging. And 65% of people with disabilities don’t have social interaction outside of their home. Often families lack the financial resources to go to the movies or bowling alley, visit a museum, or mingle with other families. The Weekend Social and Recreation Program provides families of children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to participate in community activities that are often difficult due to accommodation, finances or physical support. These outings are made possible through advance planning and communication to venues, transportation, financial assistance, and staff/volunteer support. These outings allow those we serve and their caregivers to connect in a fun atmosphere, while relieving the financial burden that often restricts families from being able to participate in such events. Respitality One way of improving the quality of life for people with disabilities is to ensure caregivers are taken care of as well. The Respitality program offers caregivers a break from a rigorous schedule compounded by the stresses of medical and financial challenges. Because finding a qualified and trusted caregiver can be expensive and difficult, many families have never left their loved one for a weekend. This is where we come in. We offer care providers, secure accommodations, remove financial barriers and ensure a comfortable experience for the entire family. Through the Respitality program, families who take care of a child or adult family member are given a night off. We connect them to a qualified substitute caregiver, and then we treat them to a night on the town. The package includes dinner, entertainment, overnight stay in a local hotel, and breakfast (in bed if so desired!). Respitality is our most popularly requested program. As a grandparent and caregiver of a special needs child I would like to thank CP of VA for allowing me to participate in the Respitality Program. It’s amazing the recognition that we caregivers receive from the organization and individual businesses that make this weekend possible. Not only does it allow us to relax but it also gives us a chance to refuel and continue our busy schedules as we know it. ~ Renae Davis “ “ Thank You to Our Respitality Program Contributors Abbey Road Pub & Restaurant Baker’s Crust Bakery Captain George’s Seafood Restaurant Clarion Hotel Williamsburg Colonies at Williamsburg Doc Taylors Double Tree by Hilton Virginia Beach Fellini’s Ferguson Center for The Arts Gary Allen Hair & Spa Hampton Inn Harmony Hospitality Inn at Corolla Light NAWAB Indian Cuisine OBICI Healthcare Foundation Ocean Key Resort & Spa Opus 9 Steakhouse P. Activities are highly customized and adaptive techniques are used. Completed works are showcased at our annual auction and other gallery events. We also lend our talents to create notecard stationary, and more. It's the people. The ability of the family to meet these challenges is determined, in large part, by the support that is available.
