THE GOOD NEWS Catholic College Bendigo Live the Good News The spirit of our school Friday 21 February marked the very special occasion of our Opening Mass, which was a beautiful celebration to start our school year. During the Mass our College Captains, Hannah Gundry (MY12) and Abe Watson (VT9), launched our 2014 theme shine the light of mercy and our student leaders were commissioned. They are to be congratulated on their commitment to these positions and on their efforts in preparing for this celebration in such a respectful manner. Thank you to the clergy who celebrated with us, we sincerely appreciate them giving their time to be with us on this significant occasion. Also, thank you to the parents who attended Mass and joined us for morning tea. Our Faith Captain, Matthew Killick (VT8), has provided the following reflection on our celebration. Mrs Trish Schofield, Director of Catholic Identity Our Opening Mass beautifully expressed the nature and spirit of our school. As hundreds of students filled the pews of the Cathedral, I was struck by the incredible reality of the situation - over two thousand students, clergy, parents, friends and teachers, gathered in one place for one cause. It’s no small feat, and it is a strong indication of the great way in which we operate - not just as a school, but also as a community. Leading the procession of Year 7 and Year 12 students was our new Catholic College Bendigo banner, which is sure to become central to all our college gatherings. As the colourful house banners moved forward down the Cathedral, surrounded by the youngest and oldest students, I thought back to my first Opening Mass six years ago; fresh, even slightly daunting - but at the same time, exciting. It was the beginning of my high school education and, this year, it is the beginning for a new group of students. A unique experience this year was when the banner and students of our new Marist House entered the Cathedral. Overall, the Mass was a strong symbol of the beginning of our year; a ceremonial ‘match’ to the ‘candle’ that is 2014. May its flame allow us, this year, to shine the light of mercy. Matthew Killick, Faith Captain shine the light of mercy Autumn 2014 Leadership shine the light of mercy From our Principal It is my pleasure to contribute this article as I commence as principal of Catholic College Bendigo. As you read through this publication, I am sure you will be impressed by the range of activities that have already taken place this year. 2014 will go down as a unique year for our College and an exciting time for catholic education in Bendigo. Marist College Bendigo is on the horizon and there are around 100 students in Year 7 who will become the first students to take up a position at Marist College Bendigo when it opens in 2015. These students are already wearing the Marist College Bendigo uniform, as you will have seen on the front page. At our Opening Mass we launched our theme for the year, shine the light of mercy. As we continue to explore what it is to be a Mercy College and embrace the values of Mercy, we hope our theme will allow everyone within our community to shine. In the readings at our Opening Mass we heard “that faith without good deeds is useless”. As we journey through this season of Lent and head towards Easter, I am inspired by the endeavour of our students to support the work of Caritas through Project Compassion. This year is the fiftieth year of Caritas Australia and our student leaders have thrown us the challenge to raise $50,000 for Project Compassion. It is heartening to see that there is a growing understanding amongst our students that we live in a privileged place and we are called to share whatever we can. So as you read through this Autumn edition of The Good News you will discover the vast array of opportunities which have already allowed our students to shine. Throughout the year we look forward to sharing our own talents and enabling others to develop theirs. On 12 December 1831, Catherine began the Religious Institute of the Sisters of Mercy. They were often seen walking the streets in service of the sick and the poor. The ‘walking nuns’, as they were known, inspired many women to dedicate themselves to Christ and the church. Last year’s theme, grow in mercy, celebrated Catholic College Bendigo’s first year as a fullyMercy school. We started to learn about what mercy is - how it is witnessed and found in the world, our school and in every individual. This year, we are called to shine the light of mercy, but what does this mean? Our interpretation is to be kind to those around us; to act with compassion and justice. This could be within your own friendship group, standing up for those who feel like they don’t have a voice, or through participation in social justice activities. Shining the light of mercy is acting with respect and courage; having the courage to step outside your comfort zone, to take a ‘leap of faith’ - as we saw the Year 12s take at our swimming carnival. Shining the light of mercy is using your talents to help the people around you. Catherine challenges us to fully develop our own God-given talents. We all have talents and we need to learn how to shine for other people. Shining the light of mercy is to treat everyone in our college, and our lives, with respect, care and support, irrespective of their differences. We are all equal in God’s eyes; this is the key to enacting our Mercy values. Shining the light of mercy is forgiving those who have made a mistake, even when it is extremely hard to. Shining the light of mercy is not something you do just once. It is something that we hope you can do every day - to act with mercy towards other people. We challenge everyone to consider what our College’s theme for 2014 means to you. How will you shine the light of mercy, and how will you help others shine the light of mercy? Light the path for others to follow. Even when you’re in the dark, there will always be the light of mercy. On Friday 7 March, Backhaus staff and students at La Valla gathered in the library for a special ‘Beginning of Year’ morning tea. Thanks to Lillian Maher (BK6) who had the idea and Emily Patterson (BK5) who assisted Lillian with initial plans. Over 120 students and staff attended and received the special treat of a Calippo icy pole. Once they arrived at the library, the students divided into mixed age groups and completed a ‘Getting to Know You’ activity facilitated by our Year 9 leaders who were excellent role models on the day and helped organise the event. It was wonderful to hear the buzz of talk in the library as the students introduced themselves and some wonderful conversations resulted from this activity. All too soon, recess was over, but hopefully the connections made will continue into the future and enhance the feeling of belonging shared by the students and staff of Backhaus House. Mrs Andrea Brooks & Mrs Kaye Graham, Backhaus staff shine the light of mercy Marist House - a new era A seventh house has been established at Catholic College Bendigo for 2014. The inclusion of Marist House means that Catholic College Bendigo has enrolled the largest number of students in its history. For one year Marist House will exist at Catholic College Bendigo, then Marist students and staff will move to the new Marist College Bendigo at Maiden Gully for the 2015 school year. This unique situation has come about through the collaboration of both colleges from the very early stages of planning and commences an exciting new era of growth for Catholic secondary education in Bendigo. Marist House has four housegroups with 104 students in total. Marist House students follow the Catholic College Bendigo Year 7 curriculum and attend the same co-curricular activities - the only difference being the students wear their own smart Marist uniform. The year commenced with all students and their families contributing to a wonderful work of art designed by Ms Paula Scoble. The four canvases come together to form one tree which represents houses James Skinner MTA and Ebony Carty MTD placing their blossoms onto the Marist tree. Marist House. Each branch has a leaf with each family’s name and the white blossoms were created by all Marist students and family members placing their fingerprint onto our tree. It was a lovely way to begin our year together. Like all houses at Catholic College Bendigo, Marist House has a motto, Known and Loved. First term has provided our young Marist House students with many opportunities to challenge themselves, extend their friendship groups and make themselves known and loved among us all. We really look forward to the rest of the year and the many more opportunities which will allow us to explore and understand Marcellin’s celebrated words, Known and Loved. AUTUMN 2014 THE GOOD NEWS 3 catholic identity shine the light of mercy Creating a vibrant faith La Valla Leaders help launch Project community Compassion Last year, our first as a fully-sponsored Mercy college, we explored the theme, grow in mercy; how to be Mercy in our contemporary world by reflecting on and living the values of respect, compassion, hospitality, justice, courage and service. May we continue to grow in mercy and act on our Mercy values this year. Our new theme for 2014 is shine the light of mercy and throughout the year we will invite others in our community to reflect on what this may mean. How do we encourage our students to shine and use their gifts and talents? How do we use Catherine McAuley’s guidance and example as a way to shine the light of mercy? She educated young women; she supported, encouraged and empowered others to allow them to shine. On Shrove Tuesday the La Valla Leaders helped Caritas Australia launch its annual fundraising effort, Project Compassion, in Hargreaves Mall. More than 1000 free pancakes were made and eaten to assist in raising awareness of the organisation and Project Compassion. Students from Catholic schools across the Sandhurst Diocese helped launch the fundraiser with many performing on the day, including our Coolock Choir. Regional coordinator Ms Kerry Stone taught us what Caritas stands for and the importance of the organisation. We took on board her words and set out, handing out pancakes and receiving donations from many locals around the Hargreaves Mall. This year’s Project Compassion theme is Have Life and Have It To The Full. Meg Williams CH5, La Valla Leader Catherine was good at recognising gifts in people and allowed time for people to develop these gifts. Her talents for organising and enabling others also assisted people in finding many unexpected talents in themselves. We too, must work together to empower the young people in our care and provide opportunities to both discover and develop their gifts and talents. In Catholic Education we are committed to building communities of faith. Catherine was a builder of community: people were important to her and she let them know it, however, at the same time she challenged them to even greater things. May we too challenge and encourage our young people to shine, giving them permission to be the best that they can be and to utilise the opportunities that Catholic College Bendigo and life provide. Above: Brody McDowell MK5, Mia McConnachie MK5, Darby Graham CH6, Meg Williams CH5. Shrove Tuesday at La Valla In the tradition of ‘Pancake Tuesday’, the Coolock Leaders and House Above: Courtney Gee VT9 and Molly Captains all McLinden CH9. gathered at La Valla to cook pancakes and raise funds for Caritas’ Project Compassion in the process. After a few burnt pancakes and some necessary taste tests, lunchtime brought an onslaught of hungry students practically throwing money at Caritas in order to get some of our brilliant pancakes. Due to some fantastic crowd control by Mrs Moro, and strict maple syrup rationing enforced by Georgina Summers (CH9) and Courtney Gee (VT9), almost everyone was able to get a pancake. A huge thank you to all involved, particularly Mr Darmody and Mr Bier for supervising us and ensuring we didn’t burn down La Valla. Throughout this year, as we explore shine the light of mercy may we reflect on the words of Catherine McAuley, and what it may mean for each of us working together to create a vibrant faith community. “We should be shining lamps, giving light to all around us.” Mrs Trish Schofield, Director of Catholic Identity Jake Twycross wins Bishop Noel Daly Memorial Award At Presentation Night in Sacred Heart Cathedral last December, Monsignor Frank Marriott presented Jake Twycross with our College’s most prestigious Award, the Bishop Noel Daly Memorial Award. The award is named in honour of the Most Reverend Noel Daly, Bishop of Sandhurst for twenty-two years from 1979 -2000. The award was first given in 2001 and became a memorial award after his death in 2004. At Presentation Night, Mr Darren McGregor said: “Jake has been an exemplary young man: quiet, modest and consistently looking out for the needs of others. His friendly and caring nature has been a positive influence among his peers. Jake has been a servant leader and a great ambassador for our College. His deep belief in the goodness of all people has ensured he has been a very popular student and friend.” Ms Felicity Johnson, Editor Right: Jake Twycross, Bishop Noel Daly Memorial Award winner 2013. 4 THE GOOD NEWS AUTUMN 2014 shine the light of mercy catholic identity Student Faith and Justice Team This year we are continuing to focus on a Mercy Education value for each term, and in Term 1 we chose to focus on the value of ‘Justice’ because it has strong ties to the work of Caritas Australia, our charity focus for Lent. Shrove Tuesday at Coolock On Tuesday 4 March, our Personal Development Skills class organised to sell pancakes for Caritas before school. We arrived at school early to prepare the mixture for the pancakes. We cooked them on the barbeque and as more students and staff arrived at school, the pancakes sold quickly. We also had live music to raise money. A total of $140 was raised for the morning which will be donated to Caritas. Each week we looked at a particular social justice issue: Asylum Seekers and Refugees, Indigenous Concerns, Eco Justice and Women and Poverty. These are the four main issues highlighted by the Justice Network of the Sisters of Mercy. Students watched videos, chalked facts onto the ground, heard stories, quotes and prayers and were encouraged to take action on issues they care about. It was great to see so many students interested in creating change and doing what they could to spread awareness. We were proud of all the students at La Valla and Coolock who came to school early to chalk facts onto the ground. Justice is something we can all get involved in, and we really do encourage you to think, judge and act on what you see, hear and read. This significant day was celebrated with liturgies for students and staff. Monsignor Marriott presided at Coolock and Father Hayes at La Valla. Our Student Leadership Teams at both La Valla and Coolock also assisted in leading this prayerful liturgy, where the ashes were distributed with the reminder for each of us to “Turn away from sin and Live the Good News”. On 18 March, all of the Year 7s at Catholic College Bendigo participated in an active day of meeting and strengthening relationships. During our eventful day we were accompanied by some Year 12 students to help us out along the way, one for each of our groups. It was a really fun experience and everyone learnt a lot about themselves and everybody else. There was one activity that most people particularly enjoyed - in our groups we had to perform an act about friendships and what would happen if we didn’t have them. It was really fun and every one learnt so much. All Year 7s are looking forward to the rest of our time as Catholic College Bendigo students. Fraser Symons CH2 & Charlie Kabalan CH2 AUTUMN 2014 THE GOOD NEWS 5 catholic identity shine the light of mercy Year 7 Welcome Mass Indigenous News On Thursday 13 March we celebrated our Year 7 Welcome Mass. Families and friends of our Year 7 students gathered together at La Valla to continue building relationships through the celebration of the Eucharist. It was a wonderful occasion, enjoyed by many, and an opportunity to further welcome our Year 7s and their families into the Catholic College Bendigo community. Anniversary of the Apology to the Stolen Generations It was great and I’m pretty sure it made the Year 7s feel very welcome. I enjoyed the chance to meet other people. Baileigh O’Meara CH1 Bree Heiden MY2 13 FEBRUARY: In our Religious Education classes we learnt about the Stolen Generations and why former Prime Minister Mr Kevin Rudd said sorry to the Aboriginal families. Some classes, including ours, wrote messages on pieces of ribbon that were the colours of the Aboriginal flag and we tied them to the school fence. National Close the Gap Day 20 MARCH: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People can expect to live from ten to seventeen years less than non-indigenous Australians. Support of National Close the Gap Day has been central in getting Australian governments to prioritise indigenous health over the last few years. This in turn has led to declines in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infant and child mortality. Awareness-raising activities were held at both La Valla and Coolock. The Year 7 Welcome Mass was a wonderful experience for me as I got to meet the parents of my friends. All the bubbly energy on the night was great. Amber Stephens MTB The Mass was great and it made the Year 7s feel that they are welcome in the school. The choir was really good, especially the actions to the final song, Till the End of Time. Meeting and greeting the Heads of House and Housegroup Teachers was appreciated too. We are proud to be Year 7s at Catholic College Bendigo. Abby McTaggart & Maggie Manning CH1 “A McAuleyian Tale” Year 12 Retreat Once upon a time, in the heat of the Australian summer, the Year 12 McAuley students and eight staff set out on an adventure to the Kingdom of Sunnystones (a camp near Bacchus Marsh). The objective was to reflect on where we have been, where we are at and where we are heading in the future . . . We were challenged to have conversations with people that went further and deeper than light-hearted chat . . . We examined our goals for the year and beyond, not just academic goals but where we would like to be in life . . . The most significant moment in our retreat was when we were presented with letters from our parents. This brought about many emotions and tears were shed by some . . . People then had the opportunity to share their faith journeys and their experiences of God . . . A small group activity, focused on the Beatitudes, identified the admirable qualities within us which were then depicted in meaningful images and symbols through face painting . . . The setting for our McAuley liturgy was outside with the smoky and hazy ranges as a backdrop. After the liturgy we ‘glammed up’ in our 70s and 80s attire for an evening with ‘Fitzy’s Trivia’ and other activities . . . Our last day came all too quickly . . . Although saddened by the shortness of the retreat we were pleased that we had the time to reflect on ourselves and connect with our peers. Excerpts from a story by Samantha Erwin MY12, Henry McCullough MY9 & Hannah Gundry MY12 6 THE GOOD NEWS AUTUMN 2014 Caritas in South Sudan Five Coolock classes were given the special opportunity to listen to Ms Mary Wachira from South Sudan speak about exactly what our Project Compassion fundraising efforts do. We heard first-hand where more assistance is needed. South Sudan is the world’s newest nation, and Ms Wachira works in the country as Caritas Australia’s Program Coordinator. They work with the most vulnerable households and communities, establish food security and rehabilitation programs and work directly with people to rebuild their lives. Ms Wachira described the horrible conditions in which children and adults are living, and the struggles they are enduring to survive and provide for their families. But, she also told us about how they still have a smile on their face every day, and make the best out of the resources they have. Founders’ Day Award Winners Congratulations to all the 2013 award recipients at Catholic College Bendigo. Most of our 2013 Awards were announced and given out on Presentation Night held on Wednesday 18 December 2013 in Sacred Heart Cathedral. Some Scholarships and Awards were presented throughout the year at assemblies and special celebrations. College Dux Congratulations to Neil Dowling, our College Dux for 2013, who achieved an ATAR of 99.45. It is noteworthy that Neil received individual subject dux awards in all five of his subjects - Maths Methods, Physics, English Language, Chemistry and Specialist Maths. He achieved the perfect study score of 50 in both Maths Methods and Physics. Speaking about Neil’s achievement, Mr Darren McGregor said “Neil has an extremely strong work ethic and a humble approach to his achievements; he’s definitely a quiet achiever. Outside his academic studies, Neil has shown a commitment to social justice, attending the Samoan Immersion trip in 2012. Neil is a collaborative learner, well-liked by his fellow students and always willing to share his knowledge and help others to achieve their best.” Presentation Night Presentation Night, held on 18 December, ensured that 2013 finished on a high note with close to 1500 people filling Sacred Heart Cathedral for this prestigious event. Students from Years 7 to Year 12 received awards for Academic Achievement and College Life. The evening opened with the presentation of the College’s two most prestigious awards announced by Mr Darren McGregor and presented by Monsignor Frank Marriott: College Dux to Neil Dowling, and the Bishop Noel Daly Memorial Award to Jake Twycross. Photo courtesy of the Bendigo Weekly - Andrew Perryman. In December our College celebrated the excellent and well-deserved results of the class of 2013 who achieved a 100% pass rate for their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) studies. We are delighted to announce that 13% received an ATAR over 90, 28% over 80 and 48% over 70. Congratulations to the College Dux for 2013, Neil Dowling, who achieved an ATAR of 99.45 and also to Kate Hodder on her excellent ATAR of 96.0 and Hanna Froehlich who achieved an impressive 95.0. It was also pleasing that a number of Year 11 students were named subject dux for their Unit 3/4 VCE subject. Over half our Year 11 students have made a successful beginning towards their 2014 ATAR. Learning and Teaching From the Director of Learning and Teaching Our students have quickly put into action our 2014 theme, shine the light of mercy. Our ongoing involvement in Caritas strongly reflects our commitment to mercy and our students’ individual efforts shine with the gifts of compassion and empathy for others. A real highlight for me so far this year has been seeing the work of our Business Management teaching staff and students who organised the ‘Caritas Fun Run’, incorporating our Caritas fundraising focus directly into their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Business Management program. Students formed partnerships, developed plans in class and implemented this justice-based fundraising, drawing on their classroom learning. This inaugural ‘Caritas Fun Run’ was a wonderful example of combining our desire to ‘shine the light of mercy’ with powerful and practical real-life learning. Congratulations to the students and staff involved. Ms Felicity Johnson, Editor Top: Nicole Wilson VT10, Rachel Harper BK1 and Courtney Gee VT9. Above: Caritas Fun Run. At the commencement of each new school year, we enjoy hearing about the many pathways taken by the previous year’s graduates. A significant number of our students had already secured their desired pathway prior to the end of Year 12, particularly many of our students in the trade-related Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) stream who successfully gained apprenticeships. Of those students seeking a place at university or TAFE colleges, 95% obtained first round offers with the majority gaining their first preference, while a smaller number accepted a place in a second or third preference course. We have a significant number of students moving into health-related courses, however overall our students are choosing further study and training from an increasingly diverse range of employment areas. We continue to have many students who appreciate the opportunities available in Bendigo to undertake further study, at La Trobe University or Bendigo TAFE, while other students have moved beyond Bendigo to one of eighteen other university or TAFE options. May these young adults carry with them the light of mercy as they move on from Catholic College Bendigo. We wish them well in the pathways they have chosen. Mr John Geary, Director of Learning and Teaching AUTUMN 2014 THE GOOD NEWS 7 Learning and Teaching shine the light of mercy Outdoor and Environmental Studies (OES) Summer Camp During the first term of 2014, Unit 1 OES students have been studying a variety of different environments that humans access and use, including nature, wilderness, managed parks and urban environments. The Term 1 camp, to the Mt Howitt region in the Alpine National Park, allowed students to see firsthand all of these environments and the different activities that happen within each area. By the end of the trip over thirty kilometres had been walked, up and down steep rocky terrain, beside rivers and above the tree line in the alpine zone. Most of this walking occurred in a large group, however a 2.5-kilometre solo walk allowed students to reflect on their first camp for the year. The camp was really awesome and lots of fun. We got Monash jumpers and luckily the weather got colder so we could wear them. We went to the aboriginal part of the Melbourne Museum and we also went bowling and played laser tag which was lots of fun. We put our hand prints on a canvas with all our names. Bree Mallia CH7 Unit 1: Mt Howitt camp Top: Reaching the Summit of Mt Howitt after 9km of uphill walking. Above: Leaving Vallejo Gantner hut for our day 2 walk. Left: Trekking towards the Summit of Mt Howitt. Unit 3: Melbourne Experience The two Unit 3 OES classes participated in a Melbourne experience looking at how human relationships have changed with Australian outdoor environments throughout history. Students walked around the Warrandyte goldfields looking at the impact of the gold rush and spent half a day floating down the Yarra on river sleds. They discussed the lifestyle of the indigenous Wurrundjeri people and paddled through Pound Bend Tunnel. The next two days included planting trees in the Murundaka wetlands, seeing protected scar trees and cycling along the Main Yarra Trail to the city. A visit to an exhibition at Federation Square depicting relationships with the land throughout time summarised what had been learnt over the 3-day period. Top: Heading towards Melbourne on the Main Yarra Trail. Middle: Pound Bend Tunnel... we made it through! Left: River sledding down the Yarra River. It’s a Boy! Mrs Gay Whitehead, Mrs Teleah Thorne and Miss Danielle Weeks are thrilled to announce the arrival of Duchess’ first calf born on Wednesday 5 March! Both Duchess and her calf are doing well. 8 THE GOOD NEWS AUTUMN 2014 Mr Rohan Bowles & Mr Tim Bailey, Outdoor and Environmental Studies Teachers Bree Mallia (CH7) participated in the ‘Hands on Monash – Indigenous Summer Camp’ from 8-10 December, 2013. The camp provided Bree with an in-depth insight into university life. As well as meeting new people, Bree participated in activities which focused on teambuilding, motivation, culture, confidence building and health and wellbeing. Shearing Shed complete The Shearing Shed for the La Valla Agriculture Department has been completed with the final touches added during Term 1. The shed was started in August 2012 by the inaugural Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Construction Trade Crew of fifteen students under the guidance of Mr Andrew Wild, VCAL Coordinator, and Mr John Houlahan who finished the shed to floor level. Additional support in 2013 was given by Mr Simon Deacon working with a larger group of twenty-five students making the windows and doors. At the end of 2013 the shed was basically complete, with front and rear ramps, pulley gates, louvre windows, sheepchute and wool bins. This term has seen the final touches added - painting, under-shed sheep pen and concrete pads for the ramp ends. This has been a great project for the Year 11 VCAL Trade Group which has been working one day per week, learning many skills which will benefit them in their choice of trade. This year there are two Year 11 Trade Groups and the first Year 12 VCAL Trade Group – making a total of fifty students in our Construction Trade Crew. The construction of the La Valla Chapel will start in the near future. The three VCAL Trade Groups will each work one day per week on the project. Mr Andrew Wild, VCAL Coordinator Right: Mr Michael Chalkley turning the first sod for the La Valla Chapel. Below: The Shearing Shed. shine the light of mercy A taste of politics I was extremely fortunate to be selected to be a delegate, representing Victoria, at the 19th National Schools Constitutional Convention that took place from 12-14 March, at Old Parliament House in Canberra. This allowed me to become better informed about the political affairs of our country and the democratic framework our constitution provides. The convention’s main focus was Australian Federalism: States’ Rights and National Priorities. Through this convention I met so many like-minded youth from all over Australia who had an immense passion for politics. Year 7 Our Year 7 Camp took place at Camp Weekaway, and we stayed there for two nights. Each day we had a set of different activities such as hut building, canoeing, swimming, mountain bike riding, flying fox, photo-regaining, bush recue, night walk and yabby person. All the activities were so much fun, but the flying fox and yabby person were probably my favourites. Gabrielle Byrne MY1 Year 7 Camp was a great experience, getting to know people and making new friends. Xavier Khoo VT2 Neerja Thirunavukarasu VT7 Speed! Twenty students made the trip to Albert Park for the official start of the Formula 1 season. Arriving at the track, we quickly discovered that there was something to interest everyone, classic cars, new Ferraris, prototypes and being able to talk to all the engineers. Not everyone was looking forward to the lectures, but they were “awesome as well” - especially the one with two engineers talking about the new F1 engines. The highlight for the day was watching the F1 cars hit the track; seeing what the collaborative development of all the new technology had achieved: SPEED! Jontee Brown MY10, Nathan Donegan JR12, Dan Simons MK5 & Mo Tanida MY12 We got to go to the MCG, went on a ferry ride and visited the Vic Market. I liked that we got to experience Melbourne and look around. Ashlee Vermeer VT12 The camp was a great chance to get acquainted with the city and travel around. We had a glimpse of what it will be like if we choose to live in Melbourne. Caleb Wellard MY12 camps It was a wonderful experience for people who don’t go to the bush a lot. The activities were great fun. They were different from anything I had ever done. It was a good opportunity to meet different people. Annie Hockey MTC My favourite activity was the flying fox because you got to fly through the air like a bird and jump off the edge of a cliff! Siahna Newland MY1 Towards the end of camp, the teachers gave out some awards, and I was lucky to receive the ‘Quiet Encourager’ Award. Maybe I should have got the ‘Great Attitude’ Award! Declan Hovenden MTC My friends and I did an act in CCB Idol called ‘Vegemite’, which was really fun. Overall camp was awesome, I had a great time, and I made lots of new friends. Aaron Gundry MY1 There were some amazing activities and lots of good initiatives and ‘get to know you tasks’. Gemmi Murrell VT2 Thy Thy was an amazing Vietnamese Restaurant. The Vic Market allowed us to see the cultural diversity that exists in Melbourne. Thomas Williams MY7 We got to experience Melbourne at night, with all the lights. The atmosphere was so different to a country town. Isaac Watson VT7 The ‘Snap Melbourne’ activity was good as it gave us a chance to see different sites around the city. The ferry ride from Williamstown to Melbourne was also a highlight. Rebecca Pedersen MY12 Year 10 My favourite part of the Year 10 Camp was the fact that we were able to go out on our own for the first three hours of the camp. We were given a level of freedom and trust that I have never been given at any other school camp before. Charmaine Pisevski VT12 AUTUMN 2014 THE GOOD NEWS 9 ouR history shine the light of mercy SNIPPETS FROM THE ARCHIVES Archives can sometimes be underestimated as just a place to file documents that no one wants anymore. However, sometimes they hold missing pieces to a puzzle or can be bring great delight - at reunions for example. Photographs and memorabilia are very popular as alumni reminisce about their school experiences. Recently I had the pleasure of receiving a signed copy of a book written by Richard Patterson Beechworth at War: A country town through three conflicts, which had a special acknowledgement of the Catholic College Bendigo Archives for our invaluable contribution to the preparation of his book. Our college provided transcripts of World War I diaries and correspondence to the author and the Robert O’Hara Burke Memorial Museum in Beechworth, where they will be made available for researchers. These transcripts had been housed for many years in archival boxes without seeing the light of day, however when this opportunity arose to use them for research purposes it was very satisfying to see them put to good use, with the permission of the family. Some other interesting archival items we hold relating to war time: (a) An Air Raid Precautions – Final Warning (1942) which was given to anyone in breach of the Lighting Restriction Order made under the Commonwealth National Security Regulations. “No person shall, at any time after sunset and before sunrise, allow direct light to be shown outside the building.” A penalty of £100 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both could be inflicted. (b) Certificate from State Emergency Services certifying the appointment of one of the Sisters of Mercy as an Air Raid Warden (1942). (c) A two hour examination paper from State Emergency Services. Catholic College Bendigo Alumni Newsletter Welcome It is my pleasure to welcome you to the first edition of Alumni News for 2014. Our College continues to embrace the changes of the past year as we became a fully Mercy School. In addition to this, construction of the new Marist College Bendigo at Maiden Gully has commenced. This year there are an extra 100 Year 7 students who are at Catholic College Bendigo and next year they will move to be the first students enrolled at Marist College Bendigo. These students are already wearing the Marist College Bendigo uniform. This is an exciting time for Catholic education in Bendigo and we look forward to the opportunities this will present. From an Alumni point of view we want to continue to honour our heritage and our history and so we will continue to encourage former students from all of the colleges to make use of our services and continue to celebrate reunions and social events as they occur. Wolf Creek 2 Greg McLean MBC 1983-1986 Greg McLean’s horror film Wolf Creek 2 opened in Australia in February as the highest grossing movie of the weekend. Greg is an independent writer, director and producer who had a hit with his first feature film, Wolf Creek in 2005. That film, which also starred John Jarratt, played both Sundance and Cannes film festivals and holds the record for Australia’s highest grossing ‘R’ rated film. Greg followed the film with the Weinstein Company-financed thriller Rogue, starring Sam Worthington, Radha Mitchell and Mia Wasikowska which he also wrote, directed and produced. Since then, Greg established Wolf Creek Pictures to executive produce genre features by exciting new directors; Red Hill and Crawlspace are the two first movies from the company. Recently he launched a graphic novel publishing company called Diezelpunk, focusing on creating transmedia entertainment properties and telling stories through the visual medium. In 2013 he co-wrote two Wolf Creek prequel novels (Wolf Creek; Origin and Wolf Creek; Desolation Game) that have been published through Penguin and draw on his experience of growing up on a farm near Strathfieldsaye and around Emu Creek. The sequel Wolf Creek 2, which was written, directed and produced by Greg, was selected for Venice, Sitges and the Paris International Fantastic Film Festival where it played to glowing reviews. Greg is currently in Los Angeles shooting his fourth feature film; a supernatural thriller called 6 Miranda Drive starring Kevin Bacon and Rahda Mitchell. shine the light of mercy Inspired by the Arts the arts Seasons of Excellence: Top Class It is with pleasure that we congratulate two of our students who were selected to participate in the Victorian Curriculum & Assessment Authority (VCAA) Seasons of Excellence for outstanding Victorian performing arts students from 2013. Our media students are enhancing their projects with a digital vision mixer to combine sound, vision and computer graphics in a studio setting. Designated display areas give students at La Valla the opportunity to show their work and view that of fellow students. Displays are constantly changing to encourage appreciation of the Arts. Connecting with local artists Local ceramic artist Ms Sarah Ormonde visited the Year 9 Ceramics Studio on 31 March. Her workshop gave students an overview of her techniques and approach to art-making. It is pleasing to be able to connect our students with local professionals of this calibre. Students were very inspired and completed a series of studies based on this experience. AUTUMN 2014 THE GOOD NEWS 11 sport news shine the light of mercy College Swimming Carnival Super weather, vibrant colours, music, atmosphere, loads of excitement and an absolutely fantastic afternoon - this was our annual Swimming Carnival. From the first enthusiastic renditions of the house chants to the courageous Year 12s taking the ‘Leap of Faith’ we saw students giving their best to earn points for their house. The novelty events - Noodle Relays, Fashions on the Pool Deck, Bombs Away, Cork Scramble and the Tug of War - attracted many participants and were keenly contested. A Staff vs Staff across the pool baton relay was a new event introduced this year, with a wide range of ‘swimming’ techniques on display. In the main pool, although races were not timed this year, we saw some excellent performances (and interesting swimming aids). The Relays were a real highlight congratulations to everyone for your eagerness to stay competitive right until the end. It was a fun-filled day with the emphasis on participation, and I am pleased to say that all students participated in one or more events. Staff got into the spirit by competing in a race against the best in Year 7 and, whilst it was a close race, the staff touched down first. I’m not sure this will be the case in 2015! It was a lovely celebration of the talents of all our young Marist House students with a tight finish in the final housegroup points tally. First place and congratulations go to Marist A.
