Future Freshman Day 2015! New POPCS Event Shows What High School is All About!
On Tuesday, November 10, the High School hosted Future Freshman Day! FFD is a new event which allowed the Class
of 2020 (current 8th graders) to experience activities in 6 different areas of the high school. High school students were
released early for the event in order to free up teachers, coaches and administrators for the afternoon. 54 high school
students volunteered their time and spent the afternoon working the event as group leaders or assisting teachers. 79
POPCS 8th graders, along with 7 students from other schools in the area, participated in the event.

Athletics: Students had the opportunity to meet many of the high school coaches and learn about athletics at the high
school level. They got to take a peek at the progress being made on POPCS' new baseball and softball field. Students
20152016 SCHOOL YEAR were shown the weight room, where they saw demonstrations of activities in which our high school athletes participate. They also met our training and medical staff.

Fine Arts: In Fine Arts, students were challenged with activities in band, choir, drama and art. In band, students were
asked to learn a drum beat and perform the beat. In choir, students learned a few measures from the musical The
Addams Family, and were asked to perform the music. In the theatre room, students learned and performed a tongue
twister. Finally, in the art studio, students learned about the color wheel and presented a picture. Students who
completed all 4 activities were awarded a prize.
English & History: Students participated in a simulation, much like you would find when visiting the Bush Library. The
simulation required them to be advisors to the President during World War II. They were presented the facts through a
video that the English and History departments put together. After hearing the facts, students were engaged in
conversation and were required to make a recommendation about whether the US should drop the atomic bomb on
Japan.

Clubs & Organizations: Students visited the high school library where they saw a display of the clubs and
organizations that they can look forward to participating in during high school. Various clubs had information set up. The
ping pong club brought their table in for students to try their hand at a quick game. Each club had props available for a
fun photo booth. Students participated in an Instagram contest using props from the clubs. "You Just Got Served" by Kiree Gove

Student Life: High school volunteers and teachers gave 8th grade students a sampling of high school life. They
introduced them to "Color Groups" and the activities that students participate in at the high school retreat and throughout

Special thanks to Admissions Director Tori Rush, our high school teachers, coaches, and
administrators for putting this event together. A HUGE thanks to the 54 high school students who spent their afternoon off hosting the event!
From Headmaster Chris Hahn:
THANK YOU thank all of you for your leadership, efforts, creativity, flexibility, passion and for sharing more about our
high school. I pray that Future Freshman Day would be a day of JOY, learning, looking forward, and that our mutual
desire to share the Gospel, partnering with families and preparing for the future would permeate all we do and say.

The work of historical fiction, bears witness to the systematic persecution and extermination of the
handicapped by Nazi German through the character of Viktor, a young man who is a reluctant member of the
Hitler Youth. Viktor has a secret; a mentally handicapped sister who is the ward of a state institution. Vicktor
soon finds himself caught between the Nazi ideologies of racial and genetic purity and the love of a sister for
whom he feels shame. As the play unfolds, he must choose whether to continue protecting his secret himself
or to come to the defense of his sister. The play was written specifically for high school and college actors by
Laura Lundgren Smith, a native of Texas who lives in Fort Worth.
Congratulations to this amazing company of young artists as they head to the state competition!

POPCS Volunteer of the Month Nominations Thank Someone
Who Serves Our School!
POPCS Senior Cori Schnell Has Been Selected to Participate in the
Congressional Youth Advisory Council!
The PTF Board would love your help in acknowledging our dedicated
volunteers. Please let us know who you believe has done an outstanding job so
we can award them properly! Throughout the year, each month, parents may nominate volunteers for their
outstanding service. From those nominated, two volunteers will be chosen to
receive the prestigious "POPCS Volunteer of the Month" sign in their yard!
Please email Jenny MurleyGonzalez with your nominations or you may place
your vote in the decorated ballot box located in the Parent Place. Thank you for taking the time to nominate a deserving volunteer!
We are tremendously proud to announce Cori Schnell has been selected to
participate in the Congressional Youth Advisory Council (CYAC) 20152016 class.
The students who are part of the CYAC were selected by a community board to
serve on the council due to their outstanding leadership skills, academic
performance, extracurricular activity participation, and community service.
Congressman Sam Johnson create CYAC in 2004 to gain insight from students in
the 3rd District and to inspire civicminded young adults to achieve their full
potential. CYAC activities include students exploring the role citizens, lawmakers
and experts play in vibrant democracy. Learning Anywhere and at Any Time with Twitter!
By Nick Weiss, POPCS Director of Innovative Teaching
Learning doesn't just happen between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. anymore.
Technology opens doors for students and teachers everywhere and at any time.
Teachers are no longer the only carriers of knowledge. They still serve a HUGE role
in facilitating learning, but there's much more to learn and experience outside the
classroom. Thanks to Twitter, discussions can happen outside of class during key
times, like in the case of Mrs. Weiss having a class discussion right after the GOP
debate in October. Additionally, teachers can enjoy a fun discussion on the couch
when they get home. A variety of twitter chats focused on teacher professional
development occur every day. Twitter chats provide a low stress, relaxed, learning
environment that takes students and teachers deep into a variety of given topics. Furthermore, chats on Twitter grow our
learning networks with people from around the world.
A Twitter chat has a moderator that plans 68 discussion questions. They usually last an hour. If the chat is publicized and
happens on a regular basis (like #edchat 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday or #luthed chat 8:00 p.m. on Mon) participants generally
end up connecting with people from a variety of states and countries. Without expecting to know anyone in chat, I
connected to someone in college that I hadn't spoken with in 8 years! We now collaborate on various teacher related
projects. Connections like this happen weekly. We're learning the power of CONNECTING with learners online.
What does this look like? Check out the following chats:

if he could write parts for Meghan's horn section for an appearance on The Tonight Show, Starring Jimmy
Fallon. Mr. Washington wrote the parts, sent them off and received the call that the arrangement was a go and
would be used for Meghan's Tonight Show performance. The horn arrangement will also be used on her
new album soundtrack. If you would like to hear some of our instrumental music staff talent on display, click here to watch
Meghan Trainor's 'Feels Better When I'm Dancing' on The Tonight Show, Starring Jimmy Fallon.
A little information about Gio:
Gio is an extremely talented multiple woodwinds performer, and talented arranger. He has two Grammy
nominated arranging projects, The Patrick Williams Big Band Aurora Album and Bevan Mason's California
Concierto. Gio has written for numerous groups from the Black Eyed Peas to the Air Force Jazz band
Airmen of Note, and The Syndey Jazz Orchestra. Last year he scored all of the music for the American NBC
comedy awards and also scored the music for a film entitled Irreversible Consequences. Gio has performed
with Three Dog Night, Ricky Martin, Sam Moore, Red Skelton, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and a host of
other performers.
He has also recorded commercials locally for Specs, McDonalds, Six Flags, and Taco Bell. Congratulations, Mr. Washington, for your recent Tonight Show contribution.

POPCS High School students celebrate Mole Day in Very Creative Ways!
A note from Dr. Givens:
Dear Students, Parents, and LoversofAllThingsChemistry,
Eagle Express Submission Information In chemistry, there is a number that is used thousands of times in calculations. Our class has not yet encountered it, but
we will shortly. The number is
602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
which, when written in scientific notation is
6.02 x 1023 and read as "six point 0 two times ten to the twentythird."
The number is used in molecular calculations so it is called a "mole," short for "molecule," but pronounced like the little
critter that crawls around in dark tunnels.
Soooooo, chemistry geeks around the world celebrate "Mole Day" at 6:02 AM on October 23 (10/23). Get it? Well, if not,
you're probably not geeky enough.
Regardless, we celebrated Mole Day Friday, October 23. (I forget the 6:02 AM part and just celebrated fourth period
during our normal class period.) Students were given "Wholly Moley" stickers to wear. They brought refreshments, but not just any refreshment was
welcomed. Refreshments had to be approved by the Mole judges. Approved refreshments includes, but were not limited
to, GuacaMOLE, MOLEasses cookies, MOLEton chocolate, carMOLE apples, and lemMOLEade! Everyone got into the spirit!
Chemistry students wore Mole Day teeshirts. They personally decorated them. There were no fuddyduds in the group.
Being a geek is where it's at!
Dr. Givens!
Mrs. Stuenkel's classes also celebrated Mole Day by presenting projects that showed that they understood what they
were celebrating. Students wrote songs, made videos, and wrote poems all about moles!
Mrs. Stuenkel also had students make a Moleopoly cake and a cute children's book about the mole.
The students enjoyed such Mole foodie favorites like
guacaMOLE and lemMOLEade. The next time you see Mrs. Stuenkel ask her to sing the "Happy Mole Day" song for you or tell you a Mole Day joke!

D1 Volleyball District CHAMPS Final Update
Woohoo! We are the champions! Congratulations to the team for an awesome, successful season with two big
championship trophies!
The middle school TAPS Division 1 Volleyball team finished their 2015 season with two huge championship wins!
The team attended the Lutheran Volleyball Championship of Texas in Tomball October 1617. The ladies dominated the
court with a quick win versus Our SaviorHouston, then defeated TrinityKlein in two games to earn a bid to the
championship. In the championship game, the Eagles defeated the host team and defending state champions, Salem
Tomball, in two games, winning 2515 and 259. The D1 Eagles are the 2015 Lutheran Volleyball State Champions!
On Thursday, October 22, the D1 and D2 teams each played in the district championship games at St. Alcuin. Both
teams played Parish Episcopal School. The D2 team fought hard, but they lost to Parish in three tough games. The D1
team stepped on the court, ready to defend their 2014 district title; in two games, the D1 Eagles earned the the 2015
TAPS District Championship!
The team worked so cohesively as a unit in both championships, and we are so proud of their successes this season.
Congratulations, Eagles!

Football Updates
JV Football vs. Brook Hill JV
Blame it on Halloween Week Weirdness!!!
Consider these occurrences in the JV game on the eve (Thursday night) of Halloween eve (Friday night)
that strangely and ominously foreshadowed eerily similar events in the Varsity game. Sophomore safety Jackson Garrett intercepted a Brook Hill JV pass and returned it 56 yards to set up an
Eagle JV TD. On Friday night in the Varsity game, Garrett intercepted a BH pass and returned it 29 yards
to thwart a BH scoring opportunity. The Eagles JV Running Back position accounted for 2 TDs Thursday night while on Friday night, the
Varsity Running Back scored 2 TDs. Freshman Jackson Fowler (a 2 yard run) and Sophomore Taylor
Kolle (an 8 yard run) scored for the JV while Varsity Senior/CoCaptain RB John Bloom scored on runs
of 23 & 13 yards.
Sophomore Dawson Madlena returned a kickoff by BH 75 yards for a Eagles JV TD. On Friday night,
Madlena had a nice 20 yard KO return for the Varsity. JV Eagle turnovers on Thursday night led to 22 points for the BH JV while Varsity Eagle turnovers led to
10 points for BH on Friday night. The JV Eagles lost a winnable game Thursday night by a score of 3820 foreshadowing the Varsity's loss
of a winnable game by the eerily similar score of 3820.
Varsity Football vs. Dallas Christian Recap
The POP Eagles football team closed out the 2015 season with a 426 loss to district champion Dallas
Christian at Eagles Stadium. Senior QB Alex Cantu scored the Eagles TD in the third quarter on a 2yard run. It marked the first time in
four years that POP has scored on the perennially strong Chargers team. Sr. RB John Bloom bulled for 148 yards on 24 carries to surpass the 1,000 yard mark (1,097) for the
second consecutive season and to become the alltime rushing leader in POP football history. Defensively, Fr. Logan Blum, Jr. Andrew Biggers, and Sr. Jeremiah Robinson joined Bloom in making
jarring tackles against the Chargers potent offense. While a 46 season record and a 25 district mark are not at winning levels, the 2015 Eagles football team
made tremendous strides in improving as a program by playing harder & better, gaining respect from their
opponents, and earning strong & enduring support from their families and fans. With only 3 Seniors on this
year's team, the returning players form the nucleus for an increasingly successful football program in the

team so admirably with their outstanding character and unceasing efforts, we offer each of you this
blessing found in Matthew 25:23 "... Well done, good and faithful servant!"
Varsity Football vs. Brook Hill Recap
The Prince of Peace Christian Eagles (45, 24) loss to the Brook Hill Guard (36, 24) by a score of 3820
at Herrington Stadium in Bullard. POP scored first on Alex Cantu's 44yard TD run and 2point conversion. Brook Hill responded by
covering 50 yards in only 4 plays to tie the score. The teams traded scores throughout the first half with
the Eagles taking a 2017 lead at the 4:09 mark of the 2nd quarter on the second of John Bloom's two
TD runs. However, Brook Hill pulled ahead for good 2420 with only 1:42 left in the half.
Brook Hill played ball control in the second half when they ran off 10:27 in the 3rd & 4th quarters on an 18
play scoring drive for their second TD of the half to bring the final score to 3420. Despite drives of 9 plays
and 11 plays by the Eagles offense, Brook Hill held POP scoreless the final 24 minutes. Cantu and Bloom each rushed 18 times for 167 and 124 yards, respectively, to lead the Eagles offense.
Jack Garrett was a key defensive performer with his interception and return of 29 yards from the 2 yard
line to thwart a Brook Hill drive on the 2nd quarter. The Eagles closed out the 2015 football season with Senior Night.
Varsity Football vs. Tyler Grace Community
In a TAPPS District 2II rainsoaked contest at Eagles Stadium, the Tyler Grace Community Cougars (71,
41) remained in contention for the district title by taking a 286 victory over Prince of Peace Christian (44,
23).
After a 49 minute weather delay in the 2nd quarter, Grace scored twice in an 80 second span to take a 14
0 lead into halftime. Following another lightning delay of 55 minutes in the 3rd quarter, Grace sandwiched
TD runs around an Alex Cantu 65yard TD run for POP.
Jeremiah Robinson, Alex Cantu, Logan Blum, and Ryan Franckhauser were standouts on defense for
the Eagles, while Cantu led the offense with his TD and 121 yards on 25 carries. John Bloom added 111
yards on his 14 carries.
Swimming Update
In middle school, Aditi set a new school record in the 50
breaststroke. She lowered the previous record by almost 3
seconds!
The high school girls medley relay also lowered their 200 medley
relay record set last year at the state meet. They lowered their
previous mark by almost half a second. Kaiden Gonser, in his
first 100 backstroke event, finished fourth overall in high school.
Middle school girls Sarah Schrier and Natalie Warneke
competed in their very first swim meet and did very well. The swimming coaches believe that this is going to be a great
season!

Some of our POPCS teachers and administrators in their
H.E.A.R.T. of an Eagle tshirts!
Proverbs 4:23 "Above all else, guard your heart for everything you do flows from it."
We believe that a positive, collaborative and constructive relationship between the school, the teacher, the
students and parents is critical and is required for the fulfillment of the school's mission. The core of this
relationship is the HEART of an EAGLE Respect is the fourth section of this core.
I Thessalonians 5:1213 "Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work among
you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in highest regard and love because
of their work. Live in peace with each other."
Our faculty and staff have committed themselves to partner with parents to help each child grow in all
areas of their life including spiritually, emotionally and academically. They expect that parents and
students will recognize and accept teachers and administrators as professionally trained educators whose
aim is in the best interest of each student.
As children we were taught to respect God, respect our elders, people in authority, our parents, our
siblings and our neighbors. It's not a secret that respect, while a Biblical principle, is becoming
increasingly invisible in today's society. Respect, honor and esteem basically carry the same message.
Let's consider a few of these messages from Holy Scripture;
RESPECT FOR GOD
Deuteronomy 6:45 "The Lord our God is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and
with all your soul and with all your might."
Revelation 4:11 "Worthy are you our Lord and God to receive glory, honor and power, for you created all
things and by your will they existed and were created."
We respect and honor our God when we worship and adore Him and obey His directive for our lives. We
disrespect and dishonor Him when we use His name carelessly or frivolously.
RESPECT FOR ELDERS AND PEOPLE IN AUTHORITY
Romans 13:7 "Pay to all what is owed them; taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is
owed, respect to whom respect is owed and honor to whom honor is due."
Hebrews 13:17 "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as
those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be
of no advantage to you."
We are blessed when we listen to and obey our parents, teachers and leaders.
RESPECT FOR FAMILY MEMBERS
Exodus 20:12 "Honor your father and mother"
Colossians 3:21 "Fathers do not provoke your children lest they become discouraged."
God loves and blesses those who love His children and treat them respectfully.
RESPECT FOR NEIGHBORS
Proverbs 2:3 "Let nothing be done out of strife or vain glory but in lowliness of mind, let each esteem
others better than themselves."
I Peter 2:17 " Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor."
It's easy to see that our Heavenly Father loves and respects each and every one of us. We are His unique
creation. Through the power of His Holy Spirit and the encouragement and support of each other, He
blesses us to share that love and respect with others.
