We serve a delicious range of teas, coffees, and soft drinks, plus a wonderful menu of freshly made sandwiches, paninis, soups, jacket potatoes, scrumptious cakes and more. The large, light and airy Ropetackle foyer is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing coffee, meet with friends for a light lunch, or get some work done with our free wi-fi. We have also expanded our pre-show dining experience and are delighted to be working with Lesley’s Kitchen to offer delicious pre-show suppers before our events taking place on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Lesley Ward, who runs Lesley’s Kitchen, has lived in Shoreham for over 30 years and has lots of experience in catering for local businesses and community events including five years running the Beach Dreams Café. She believes in quality locally sourced ingredients and delicious home cooked food. Our pre-show supper menu includes both meat and vegetarian options including lasagne, chilli, pies, casseroles, and curry, all served with either salad or vegetables, plus a range of desserts including trifles, meringues, brownies and more! Main meals cost just £7, desserts £3, or the 2-course meal for £9.50. No booking necessary, food will be served from 6pm. Ropetackle Café Welcome to our summer programme! Now an award-winning venue* we are delighted to offer another exceptional programme of events with something for everybody to enjoy. Our newly re-opened Ropetackle Café has been a huge success, and we hope you can enjoy its delectable delights, whether a coffee during the day, or one of our delicious pre-show meals (see opposite page for more details). As a charitable trust staffed almost entirely by volunteers, donations make a significant contribution to covering our running costs and programme delivery, and our Friends scheme is a great way to support the Centre alongside other benefits (see page 53 for details). Nothing comes close to the friendly atmosphere, intimate performance space, and first-class programming that has established us as one of the South Coast’s most celebrated arts venues. We believe engagement with the arts is of vital importance to the wellbeing of individuals and the community, and with such an exciting and eclectic programme ahead of us, we’ll let the events speak for themselves. Between May 1st and July 3rd 2015 Richard will pedal up to 100 miles between gigs carrying everything on his bike. He’ll perform a wide selection of virtuoso music highlighting the chameleon like qualities of the guitar. The show includes JS Bach’s mighty D minor Chaconne and will also feature Richard’s own Cycling Music for guitar, sequencers, and pre-recorded bicycle percussion, complete with spectacular projected animations. The cycling minstrel will also find room in his trailer for his favourite ukulele on which he’ll perform additional works by JS Bach. Cycling Music was written for Richard’s successful 2014 album of the same name. It was played during the BBC’s coverage of last year’s Le Tour De France, in the film Bicycle (Blue Hippo Productions), on ITV’s Cycle Show, and on BBC Radio3. Music Film Magic Comedy World Music Theatre After playing together at Ropetackle last November there were so many requests for a return visit that Mike Hatchard and Gordon Webber decided to form an actual band! With Nana Tsiboe on percussion (credits include Sting no less), Mark Ramsden on sax (credits include Loose Tubes and Tom Robinson), Steve Edwards on the bass (brilliant up and coming young bass player) Mike, Gordon, and the wonderful Fransesca Payne share the vocals. Tunes will include songs from their album ‘Everyone Who Loves Is A Little Bit Blind’ as well as material from their latest release. Sunday 3rd May | 11am | £9 BELSHAZZAR’S FEAST ‘Their music is breathtaking and wickedly inventive and the between-tunes interchange as intelligent and hilarious as the music.’ ~ Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2 Start with traditional folk music, add a touch of classical and jazz, throw in a bit of pop and music hall, and top it off with lashings of wry humour – and you have a wonderfully entertaining evening with Belshazzar’s Feast. Paul Sartin (of Bellowhead and Faustus) and Paul Hutchinson (of Hoover The Dog) have together wowed audiences across the UK with their eclectic and eccentric mix of tunes and between songs chat that always sends audiences home with smiles on their faces. And the team are gearing up to face the absurdity of it all with an all singing, all dancing (and possible nudity) satirical spectacular special edition. It’ll be topical tunes and side-splitting sketches galore! Then of course there’s the notorious Brighton Festival too. Is anyone safe from the foppish festival frippery? (Try saying that three times fast.) Rich pickings indeed this May, so get yourselves down for the fun. Because in this election special, no matter which horse you back, you’ll enjoy the ride! On this special election evening the bar will remain open until midnight and suppers will be served after the show. Thursday 7th May | 7.30pm | £14 FROM THE JAM That’s Entertainment Acoustic Tour From The Jam, featuring former The Jam bassist Bruce Foxton and Russell Hastings. Bruce and Russell will be performing a selection of songs from The Jam’s extensive back catalogue and songs from Bruce’s new album Back In The Room as well as handing over the microphone to the audience for a question and answer session. Expect to hear classics such as ‘Down In The Tube Station At Midnight’, ‘Going Underground’, ‘Town Called Malice’, and ‘Strange Town’, as well as new songs from ‘Back In The Room’. Come and join us for what promises to be an electrifying evening of early results and election predictions. Showaddywaddy have long been established as Europe’s most successful ever exponents of retro-inspired rock and roll. Saturday 16th May | 8.30pm | £12.50 Advance, £14 On The Door CHRIS DIFFORD As a member of one of London’s best-loved bands, Squeeze co-founder Chris Difford has made a lasting contribution to English music with hits such as Cool For Cats, Up The Junction, and Tempted. And since his first release back in 1977, he has not stopped writing and performing. Chris recently celebrated his 60th birthday with an astonishing 41 of those years spent writing with Glenn Tilbrook. Over a 13 album career with Squeeze, Chris has established himself as a purveyor of smart, pithy lyricism. His ‘kitchen sink-drama’ style has drawn plaudits from across the globe, with his influence keenly felt today. Chris is the recipient of two Ivor Novello Awards and has written and contributed lyrics for the likes of Elton John, Wet Wet Wet, Lisa Stansfield, and Bryan Ferry. However, it was the short-lived but warmly remembered Fairground Attraction that really brought her into the limelight with chart topping album First Of A Million Kisses and the single ‘Perfect’. BUDAPEST CAFÉ ORCHESTRA ‘The fiery vivacity and awe-inspiring musicianship of the finest purveyors of Eastern European gypsy music this side of a Lada scrap heap will leave you with a grin on your face and rhythm in your feet’ ~ The Times Led by jazz violin superstar Chris Garrick, the Budapest Café Orchestra play traditional folk and gypsy music from across the Balkans and Russia, Klezmer, Romanian Doinas, Hungarian Czadas, and beautiful ballads such as the theme to Schindler’s List. Her band features guitar legend Chris Spedding and the wonderful Mark Bassey on trombone, plus Charlotte’s younger brother Sam Glasson cooking up some fantastic grooves. She is Pete Seeger‘s half-sister, Ruth Crawford Seeger‘s daughter; partner to Ewan MacColl, who wrote First Time Ever I Saw Your Face for her and with whom she had three children. She is known for her evocative renditions of Anglo-American folksongs and for her activist song-writing, especially in the field of feminism. As a singer and multi-instrumentalist, Peggy is widely considered to be one of North America’s finest female folksingers. She will be performing with Neill MacColl and Calum MacMcoll. Mànran are also the only band to host Highland and Uilleann pipes together in one line-up, creating a sound like no other. He’s been on BBC1’s Live At The Apollo and BBC3’s Edinburgh Comedy Fest Live a regular on Channel 4’s Stand-Up For The Week. He’s had three series of his own show on BBC Radio 4. He’s a double Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee. Yet none of that rubbish has brought him any joy. First up is Paul Eshelby, a trumpeter who has worked with the BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra, the BBC Radio Orchestra, and the BBC Big Band, as well as with many of the world’s leading artists from Ella Fitzgerald to Pavarotti, via Freddie Mercury and Queen. NINE BELOW ZERO Nine Below Zero are one of Britain’s most celebrated rhythm and blues bands, famous for their no-frills, punchy and direct approach. With numerous albums under their belt and links to the likes of The Rolling Stones and Squeeze, Nine Below Zero remain a national institution within the UK’s live music scene. Nine Below Zero will be playing with the classic line-up of all four original band members; Dennis Greaves (guitar/vocals), Mark Feltham (harmonica), Mickey ‘Stix’ Burkey (drums), and Brian Bethell (bass). Named after a song by legendary blues artist Sonny Boy Williamson, Nine Below Zero have performed and recorded alongside many great artists and also appeared on the first ever episode of BBC TV’s anarchic comedy hit The Young Ones! In 1994 they supported Eric Clapton at The Royal Albert Hall, and in 1995 Hollywood star Bruce Willis even invited Nine Below Zero to play with him in London after the première of his film 12 Monkeys! Saturday 6th June | 8pm | £15 Advance, £17 On The Door 19 Music Film Magic Comedy World Music Theatre Second, Ollie Boorman is one of the new generation of star drummers, constantly in demand for live and session work in a vast array of musical genres. Equally at home in an orchestra pit for a theatre show, at a jazz club, or on stage with a pop act, Ollie has a reputation for sensitive accompaniment and blistering powerhouse grooves! Thirdly, saxophonist Greg Heath. Originally from New Zealand, Greg has toured and recorded with a diverse range of artists both in the jazz and pop idioms including prominent UK and international artists including Mike Manieri, Rachael Z, Jim Mullen, The Hot Orange Big Band, Van Morrison, Alexander O’Neal, Marianne Faithful, Hamish Stewart, Geno Washington, and many, many more. With so much talent coming together, you can rest assured this will be another great Sunday morning jazz breakfast, a true June jazz treat. Sunday 7th June | 11am | £9 Opera Rock Folk Family Blues Spoken Word Jazz 20 ropetacklecentre.co.uk JUNE 2015 RUBY TURNER BOX OFFICE: 01273 464440 JUNE 2015 Ropetackle Film Club Presents: THE LAST PICTURE SHOW “Soul, gospel, and RNB – Ruby Turner is truly the genuine article, blessed with a voice that can breathe life and meaning into any song” ~ The Guardian Widely regarded as one of the UK’s finest soul singers, Ruby Turner’s career has had many unexpected twists and turns with major tours, theatre and TV appearances, as well as touring with Jools Holland. She performed at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert, was a guest judge on BBC show The Choir: Sing While You Work with choirmaster Gareth Malone, and in 2013 was a guest judge on BBC Songs Of Praise gospel choirs competition. Her major break came in the mid-1980s, when she was asked to join Culture Club at the height of their stardom. Several critically acclaimed albums later, and Ruby has become a household name with many hits including I’d Rather Go Blind, If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me), and It’s Gonna Be Alright. 1971 American drama film about the coming of age of Sonny Crawford (Timothy Bottoms) and his friend Duane Jackson (Jeff Bridges). Directed by Peter Bogdanovitch. For aesthetic and technical reasons, the film was shot in black and white which was unusual for the time. Open to Film Club members and guests. Duration 118 mins. With Rough Chowder ‘Cajun On The Coast’ present an evening of Cajun music and dancing with Rough Chowder, including a pre-show dance workshop and Cajun food to complete that South Louisiana experience. Fronted by husband and wife, Ian and Cheryl McIlroy, Rough Chowder have been honing their Cajun sound at folk clubs and festivals, whilst amassing a following within the UK and European scene. Sam has collaborated with story-teller Hugh Lupton, fellow Bellowhead band mate Paul Sartin and concertina player Rob Harbron to create a performance based on this story, featuring on stage the actual fiddle made by Richard Howard. Sunday 6th September | 8pm | £15 Advance, £18 On The Door 47 Music Film Magic Comedy World Music BENDRIX: BENJI KIRKPATRICK’S HENDRIX PROJECT A well-known performer on the UK folk scene and member of the mighty Bellowhead, Benji Kirkpatrick embarks on a new solo project, reinterpreting the songs of Jimi Hendrix; stripping back the layers of guitar, the psychedelia, and the era, revealing the songs in their pure form. Remembered for his pioneering, exceptional ability as a guitarist, on (and off) stage antics, Hendrix’s legacy extends to a wealth of great songs. Leaving behind the guitar altogether (Hendrix did that rather well…), Benji tackles his material on bouzouki, banjo and mandolin, and will perform the songs of Hendrix like you’ve never heard them before. Benji Kirkpatrick is a musician and songwriter; a founding member of both folk big band Bellowhead, and acclaimed folk trio Faustus, and has toured extensively with Maddy Prior and Seth Lakeman.
