Editor’s Desk
Some stars shine all year long
W
hen Hurricane Sandy tore into New York City, NYU’s Tisch Hospital
faced a flooded basement and failed backup generators.
Two hundred people — including more than 20 newborns — were
forced to evacuate. After firefighters carried some of the babies
down nine flights of stairs to waiting ambulances, nurses ensured they were out
of harm’s way. That’s a dynamic scenario, but dynamic is sometimes part of a
nurse’s job.
Sometimes, a NICU nurse like Margaret O’Leary will receive some form of
recognition for a job well done; many times they won’t.
However, as we do in every December issue, O’Leary joins others comprising
the 2012 Travelers of the Year. Part of a class of dedicated practitioners, these
travelers are special, like
Barbara Weixel, an emerAn emergency
gency nurse who each year
travels to South Africa to
reminds us
render nursing care to orphans.
that healthcare
Physical therapist Cheryl
professionals are Reed lives in Ecuador six
month out of the year,
critical assets
where she runs an organic
coffee farm. According
to colleagues, Reed is able to fulfill both of her passions of providing a clinical
medical practice here, and conducting organic farming to assist the indigenous
people of Ecuador.
Sometimes fortitude, dedication, and a strong spirit take various forms, like
Dana Beagle, who works as a cardiovascular operating room technician. Dana is
a mother and the sole provider for her family. She travels with her husband and
three young children, providing home schooling along the way.
Of course, many travelers would struggle if not for the support of a good recruiter. In this issue we also recognize staffing professionals like Kristin Zandee,
who was nominated because of her compassion, empathy, and effort to accommodate the travelers she works with.
Yes, sometimes a national disaster brings out the best in healthcare professionals. Sometimes their best is on display year round.
So, to celebrate the good works that all of these travelers and recruiters accomplished throughout 2012, join us in saying: job well done. HT

Staying organized all the time
Editorial Advisory Board
T
Healthcare Traveler’s Editorial Advisory Board was
established to provide the magazine with input from
industry leaders to help develop editorial content.
Members are chosen by the magazine’s editors to offer
insight into the topics covered by Healthcare Traveler,
and to provide a voice and leadership for the healthcare
traveling industry.
he life of a traveling healthcare
professional can be exciting, but
hectic. Keeping files, schedules,
and professional contacts
organized is
essential for
long-term success. We asked
Cynthia Kinnas, president
of Randstad
Healthcare,
Cynthia Kinnas
to answer our
questions about how travelers can
keep it all together when they’re constantly on the move. Kinnas was recently appointed as the new president
of the National Association of Travel
Healthcare Organizations, starting
Jan. 1.
HT: How challenging can it be for a
traveler to remain organized?
Kinnas: They say it can be overwhelming to keep track of who they’ve
talked to about which assignments,
and that keeping their files in order
so they can act quickly when good
opportunities come along is critical.
Being on top of the details and keeping files current has become even
more important as the demand for
travelers has picked up over this past
year. They have many more choices
of assignments, which means keeping
more information at their fingertips.
HT: What’s the benefit of keeping
detailed notes, regardless of the
system you use?
Kinnas: It’s not uncommon for a traveler who works with multiple agencies
to hear about the same assignment
from several of them at around the
same time. But the pay packages and
benefits being offered may be different, so keeping thorough notes
8

will help you make the best decision.
Good records will also help you avoid
the embarrassing situation of letting
your file be presented by more than
one agency to the same hospital. That
makes everyone look bad and some facilities will reject a candidate based on
that mistake alone. A traveler should
never work with any agency that
submits his or her file without clear
authorization.
HT: How about once a traveler has
accepted an assignment?
Kinnas: I suggest that travelers take
notes during their acceptance and
confirmation calls with recruiters.
Write down everything you need to
do and have ready to start working.
This includes credentialing documents, pre-employment tests, health
records, the works. Some travelers
get delayed in starting an assignment
because they waited too long to get a
drug screen or titer drawn, not realizing results can take several days to
become available. Being proactive and
organized will result in a successful
onboarding process. It also makes a
good first impression on a hospital.
HT: On an assignment, what sort of
organizational tools are needed?
Kinnas: Related to housing, find out
before you’re scheduled to arrive
whom to contact to get keys and get
moved in. If you’re arriving late in the
evening, find out how to work that
out with the apartment manager. Also
find out ahead of time what you need
to bring. Some places provide everything down to linens and dishes; most
do not. I also tell travelers to make
notes or take photos of any damage to
an apartment that they notice when
they move in. That way, when they
move out, there is no question about
responsibility. HT

NURSING NEWS
New survey reveals
nursing job satisfaction
According to new survey, 91 percent
of RNs are satisfied with their careers,
up significantly in 2012, while 44 percent would not select or are not sure
they would select nursing as a career if
given the opportunity to start again.
AMN Healthcare last month revealed results of their 2012 Survey of
Registered Nurses.
Close to one-third of the respondents report that they plan to take
steps in the next one-to-three years to
reduce their current workload. They
specifically cited changes such as
shifting to part-time or less demanding roles, as well as transitioning out
of nursing altogether, by retiring or
seeking non-nursing jobs.
In addition, 40 percent of respondents plan to pursue further education in nursing during the next one
to three years. AMN says the data also
suggest how nurses currently view the
quality of nursing care, and whether
healthcare reform will help address
the predicted nursing shortage.
ANA releases draft
The American Nurses Association
(ANA) has released the Safe Patient
Handling and Mobility National
Standards to help establish a uniform, national foundation for programs to improve safety for patients
and healthcare workers by 2013.
The standards outline eight broad
areas considered essential to implementing an effective program to
safely transfer patients. The criteria
apply to settings and different intensity levels of patient care. HT

Georgia law hinders
licensure
Hundreds of healthcare workers in
Georgia are losing their licenses to
practice because of a problem created
by a new immigration law in the state,
according to a recent news report.
The law requires everyone no matter where they were born to prove
their citizenship or legal residency to
renew their professional licenses.
With too few state workers to process the extra paperwork, licenses
for doctors, nurses, pharmacists
and other health professionals are
expiring.
Enactment of the law coincided
with budget cuts that reduced the office staff by 40 percent.
According to GPB News, Kelly
Farr, Georgia’s deputy secretary of
state, says 600 nurses alone have
fallen through the cracks. “There’s
nothing more frustrating than getting that call from the desperate
nurse, knowing ... she’s being slowed
down because we literally don’t have
enough people to click the approve
button,” Farr says.
Director LaSharn Hughes says
she sent 41,000 letters of notification out on a recent Thursday. “And
by Monday, we’d burned up a fax
machine,” Hughes says. “We didn’t
have the staff. We didn’t have the
equipment.”
Hughes estimates about 1,300
doctors and other medical practitioners have lost their legal ability
to work. Some didn’t submit the
required paperwork. Others are stuck
in the backlog of applications that

Emergency preparedness for pets
Kim Kilmer
A
s I sit here in my office on
the east coast of Maryland,
my thoughts keep circling
around the fact that my dog,
my property and myself recently made
it through four days following Hurricane Sandy.
I was able to stay in my home, but
took the time to block access to doors.
For those of us who travel in pursuit of careers, we often find ourselves
in areas of the country where weather
or natural phenomena are common.
We hear tips and advice about how
to best prepare, but until you’ve lived
through a taste of Mother Nature,
you can’t fully comprehend how she’ll
affect you and your pets. Just ask the
coastline residents of New York and
New Jersey.

Travel and shelter
As discussed in the September 2012
Paws for Thought, you should invest
in a crate or have a seat belt already
in place and ready for travel. Make an
evacuation plan before you leave. This
is especially important for healthcare
travelers new to a particular area.
Look at packing these items:
• fully-charged cell phones, chargers, blankets, flashlights, weather radio with batteries, food,
water, and essential supplies that
you will use;
• a list of local emergency shelters,
including which shelters accept
crated pets that are current on
vaccines;
• phone numbers for hotels that
accept pets.
Returning home
Do a complete inspection of your
home, rental property, and any outdoor areas around your home prior to
bringing your pet back inside.

preparedness for your pet, try the following links:

Keeping a cool head and thinking
ahead will ensure that you and your
pet make it safely through whatever
Mother Nature may toss in your way.
As Sandy survivors will tell you, there
is no such thing as being overly prepared. HT

Just as it is wise to have necessities in
case of an emergency, the same level
of preparation is needed to ensure the
welfare of your pet.
You can make a pet to-go bag to
have at the ready. Update the bag’s
contents monthly to update contact
information, check the status of batteries, and change supplies of any pet
medications, food, and water.
Obviously the contents will change
slightly based on the type of pet that
travels with you. Consider:
• emergency contact card with
updated phone numbers and
names, including the name of
your veterinarian;
• pet first-aid kit;
• copy of current vaccines, rabies
information, and microchip
numbers;
• secure, engraved ID tags that
contain contact info and microchip registry phone numbers;
• supply of medications and
monthly preventatives;
• one gallon of bottled water, per
pet, per day;
• enough pet food to last for two
weeks (more if you purchase
food not readily available from
local retail outlets);
• travel bowls with secure lids;
• a folding travel crate large
enough to comfortably fit your
pet;
• battery-operated heat lamps to
provide warmth for young, senior, or exotic pets;
• portable litter pans and a supply
of kitty litter;
• properly fitting life jackets in the
event of flooding.

t. Petersburg’s rich history can be
traced back to John C. Williams’
purchase of 2,500 acres of land
in 1876 and Peter Demens, a Russian
aristocrat who decided to extend his
railway onto Williams’ land. The city
was named in honor of Demens birthplace, St. Petersburg, Russia.
Its seaside location and ability to
market itself as a tourist destination
helped put St. Petersburg on the map.
Because the city’s natural and recreational amenities were crucial to its
tourism industry, development of the
waterfront became a high priority.
The early 20th century brought an
influx of land speculators and tourists
who poured capital into the city. This
cash flow enabled extensive public
improvements and new construction
that left behind a legacy of architectural style, which still inspires today’s
architectural design.
Today, St. Petersburg continues to
remain a popular vacation destination
hosting more than ten million visitors each year. While the city, which
celebrated its centennial in 2003, has
undergone many changes throughout
the years, its aesthetics, livability, and
appeal remain unchanged for visitors.

Founded by Margaret Acheson
Stuart, the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA)
opened to the public in 1965. Presenting an exceptional collection of art,
the museum continues its mission
to pursue excellence in art through
exhibitions and education. Its permanent collections include photography;
Greek and Roman antiquities; and
European, Asian, Pre-Columbian, and
American art. Current exhibitions include: Contemporary Prints by American Women: A Selection from the Gift
of Martha and Jim Sweeny; The Art of
Golf; Philip Pearlstein’s People, Places,
Things; and Forever in a Moment:
Nineteenth Century Photographs of
Egypt. Now open every day, MFA offers three different touring options
— group, docent-led, and school — a
museum store, and a café.

Bring the past to life with a stroll through St. Petersburg’s historic districts. Aside from presenting some of
Florida’s prime examples of Mediterranean Revival architecture, these districts, including Kenwood, Roser Park,
and Round Lake, are home to dozens of residences listed
on the National Historic Register. Guided walking tours
are offered on Saturdays by St. Petersburg Preservation.
With 361 days of sunshine a year and an average temperature of 74 degrees, it’s not surprising that a great deal
of the city’s top attractions can be found outdoors. St. Petersburg’s beaches are ranked among the best beaches in
the nation and are considered environmentally friendly. Ft.
Desoto Beach, off the city’s southern tip, is one of the most
celebrated beaches in the country because of its beautiful
coastline, assortment of water-related activities, great fishing, and sailing.
Sorts of sports
While some teams play in St. Petersburg proper and others
in Tampa, the area’s four professional sports teams represent the Tampa Bay Metropolitan area. Founded in 1998,
Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays play for the American League Eastern Division. The team’s regular season
runs from March through October, and their home venue
is Tropicana Field.
Members of the North American Soccer League
(NASL), the Tampa Bay Rowdies were founded in 2008.
The team plays locally at the Al Lang Stadium located
on the downtown waterfront. The NASL’s pre-season
starts in March, and the regular season runs from April
through early October.
Calling St. Petersburg home since 1977, the Bay Area
Pelicans Rugby Football Club is a member of the USA

Visit the historic Bob Hope
Theatre. Fully renovated
in the late 1990s and early
2000s, the theater then
changed its name to honor
Bob Hope. Visitors can enjoy rich wood carvings and
murals in the lobby and
main chamber. With more
Bob Hope Theatre
than 2,100 seats, the Bob Hope
boasts three Wurlitzer pipe organs in the loft.
Take in the exhibits at the Haggin Museum. The inspiring
space has an art collection featuring works by noted 19thcentury painters Albert Bierstadt and Rosa Bonheur. The
history displays focus on the area’s past and former residents, including Charles Weber, Stockton’s founder.
Wander the Miracle Mile, an eclectic mix of boutique
shopping; original and locally-owned al fresco and fine
dining restaurants; a lively night life; and varied arts and
entertainment, and services district celebrating its 90th
anniversary in 2011. Miracle Mile is a great place to visit
whether you’re taking a stroll or shopping for something.
Root at Banner Island Ballpark, the home of the Stockton
Ports baseball team. Built in 2005, in Downtown Stockton,
the place where Lawrence Thayer’s famous poem “Casey
at the Bat” supposedly took place. Residents of Stockton,
known for a time as Mudville prior to incorporation in
1850, have laid claim to being the inspiration for the poem.
Explore Little Manila, which once spanned more than four
city blocks, although only three original buildings, the
Iloilo Circle and the Dimasalang House, and the Daguhoy
Lodge remain. Visitors find that the three remaining
structures preserve the Filipino history quite well. The stories, struggles, triumphs, and contributions of the Filipino
culture to Stockton’s growth can be traced back to this
fragment of the city’s history.
Come into contact with the Stockton Constructed Wetlands,
an attraction that allows you to see many of the area’s
creatures living in their natural habitat. The wetlands are
a haven for birdwatchers, so birders will definitely want to
bring along binoculars and cameras to capture glimpses
of the many winged wonders. The man-made wetland and
bird-watching area attracts roughly 55 bird species year
round. HT

Stamped Leather Luggage Tag
Mesa Dreams

“My work is for those
who know what the
whispering voice of
the road sounds like,”
says Brandy Kayzakian-Rowe, proprietor
of Mesa Dreams.
Brandy’s father, a
mobile nurse, passed
the travel bug on to
his daughter when
she was a little girl. “In the ‘70s and ‘80s, my dad had a leatherworking shop. We traveled to amusement parks where he sold custommade belts and jewelry to happy tourists. I was able to go on all the
rides for free and spent time reading books behind the counter of my
parents’ shop. What more could a young girl ask for?”
Three years ago, Brandy opened her own ‘pop-up’ shop in the
form of an etsy store. She creates a beautiful array of leather goods,
including custom pieces, inspired by a love of drawing, design, and
reading. Travel is also a major muse. “I have lived in 32 places in 32
years,” Brandy relates. “I found the West and found myself.”
Her luggage tags are handmade, one-of-a-kind, leather art pieces that
have been hand carved, tooled, stamped, stained, dyed, and painted.
Brandy uses vegetable tanned leather and eco-flo non-toxic paints,
dyes, stains, and glues.

THE BASICS OF TR AVELING
Homeschooling on the road
H
omeschooling is a flexible
option, allowing healthcare
travelers to determine the best
arrangement for their family if they
choose to pursue this educational alternative.
Homeschooling is traditionally
defined as the art of using one or
several techniques to provide education to your
child. There
are several
approaches
including the
conventional
use of books;
modern
methods,
which are
Epstein LaRue
computerbased; technical, comprising computer and Internet usage; and the more
relaxed method of “unschooling.”
In the last, the student learns
from everyday life. For instance,
he might study math by keeping a
record of what he earns for allowance and subtracting the amount
he spends. Homeschooling parents can also involve children in
everyday math problems, such
calculating the cost of groceries,
their taxes, and the gas needed to
get to the store. Subjects like science and geography are taught by
exploring the world around you.
Before you get started on a
home schooling course, determine your child’s learning
preference. Is he an audio/visual
learner? Does he like to read? Perhaps
he enjoys spending time on the computer. It may be clear from the onset
or you might have to experiment with
a couple of techniques. Initially, I
thought my child would prefer learning on his PC. But, he found it more
44
∣

cyan

difficult and ultimately preferred the
conventional method.
Choosing a curriculum
Several companies—including AlphaOmegas Lifepaks (aoacademy.com),
A Beka Book (abeka.com), and Bob
Jones (bjupress.com) — still produce
textbook-style options. With my son,
I used a combination of the Lifepaks
and A Beka programs.
Computer programs and online
schooling are another option for this
technological age. Through this alternative, you would guide your child
through online classes or courses sent
to you on compact disc. These programs do not require as much instruction by the parent, but they do need
supervision.
I tried “Switched On Schoolhouse”
(aophomeschooling.com/switched-onschoolhouse), Alpha Omega’s classes on
disc. Via a network, the student turns
in his lessons electronically. The teacher gets notifications when the student
completes a lesson that has been
graded and needs review. Monarch
(aophomeschooling.com/monarch) is
Alpha Omega’s new online classroom
where all instructions are completed
on the Internet.
Other online classes include K-12
(k12.com), Time For Learning (time4learning.com), The Grace Academy
(thegraceacademy.org), and the Robinson Curriculum (robinsoncurriculum.
com). Check your state board of education for programs that they might
have.
Graduation is accomplished by
achieving a curriculum that produces a diploma after the child has
completed all the required classes for
general high school, or he or she can
pass the GED test. You can obtain a
file box big enough to handle all of
you records, including your traveling
receipts, travel records, and homeschool records.
State laws
To find out about the laws in my home
state of Arizona, I contacted a local
homeschool association and
discovered all I needed was a
signed affidavit stating I was
taking my child out of the public school system.
As we went from assignment
to assignment, I looked up
the homeschool laws for each
new area. This is easily accomplished by visiting the Homeschool Legal Defense Website
(hslda.org). In Tennessee, we
had to give a copy of the affidavit to the apartment complex
and write a letter to the school
administration. In our experience, the Volunteer State was
the most restrictive because it
also required a homeschooled child’s
parent to have a bachelor’s degree.
The biggest challenge we encountered was when my child turned 15
and wanted to start driving. Every
state has a different law dictating the
age and privileges of a young driver.

Most require at least one parent to be
a resident. But as a traveler, you are a
resident of your home state, which can
complicate matters if you are thousands of miles away from home. In
other states, a minor can be deemed a
resident of a given state if he or she has
a part-time job there.
While on assignment, I enrolled
my son in an online driver’s education
program. It covered the requirements
for all states and can be found at driversed.com. Also, my insurance company gave me a discount for enrolling
my child in the program. You should
check with your insurance agent to
see if a similar benefit is offered or if
he recommends a different program.
Then, after your child completes the
course and you return to your home
state, he or she will be ready to take a
driving exam.
Graduation is accomplished
Extra credit
example, we told a ranger we were
homeschooling our son, and he gave
us a tour of a working lighthouse.
Such diverse, unexpected lessons are
part of the educational adventure.
You can try to plan at least one field
trip every week to keep things interesting.
Like a lot of healthcare professionals, prior to becoming a traveler,
I thought I had to give my child a
“stable environment.” Thankfully,
through homeschooling, I discovered
I could do that and also present him
with opportunities to learn from different locations and cultures throughout the country. HT
One of the greatest added benefits of
homeschooling while you travel: Your
child gets to experience something
new as often as every 13 weeks. During an assignment in California, for

Students may start the RN to BSN
program in either the spring or fall
semesters and can participate on a fulltime or part-time basis.
Graduation requires the completion
of 120 credits. Students entering the
program must have completed a minimum of 59 undergraduate credits in
behavioral and social sciences, physical
and natural sciences, and the arts and
humanities.
Thirty additional credits will be
given to RNs for having a valid nursing
license. The remaining 31 credits must
be earned through UMSON. Offered
completely online, the program does
not require any campus visits and the
clinical component can be completed
in their own geographic area.
Applicants for the BSN program
must be graduates of a nationally accredited nursing program, hold an
unencumbered RN license, and have
a Science GPA of 3.0 (Chemistry,
Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Microbiology).
Technical requirements
Students taking part in online programs need to meet minimum hardware and software requirements and
must have Internet access (minimum
of 56K modem but cable broadband or
DSL is recommended).
UMSON recommends the use of
Windows/Intel based computers to
guarantee compatibility with all applications and internal systems.
PC users should have a Microsoft
Windows operating system (Windows
XP or Windows 7), a minimum Intel

In the Bag
MUST- PACK IT EMS FOR H A PPY T R AV EL S
#1 TRAVEL ESSENTIAL: The trailer I
pull behind my car. I load it up with
everything I need and use it to pick up
extra furnishings, which, at the end of an
assignment, I donate to St. Vincent de
Paul or another charitable organization.
Kathy Warren, RN
A
mobile nurse for the past six years, Kathy has accepted assignments with California-based Rise Medical Staffing (formerly
HealthOne Staffing) since 2008. During the fall and winter
months, she looks for contracts in California; in the spring and
summer, she seeks travel opportunities in the Midwest to be closer to her
husband, Bill, who is retired and remains at the couple’s home in Iowa.
Some of the places she has traveled to thus far include Menominee,
Wis.; Stockton, Calif.; and Boone, Iowa. Kathy, a labor and delivery
nurse, is currently in the Golden State, on assignment at Mercy
Medical Center in Merced, where she’ll be working through January.
PERSONAL TOUCHES: A down comforter
and my own pillow.
CREATURE COMFORT: My cat, Harriett.
FAVORITE ASSIGNMENT DESTINATION:
There are so many great places, but
one I really enjoy is Santa Rosa here in
California. It’s “wine country.” I like to
drive up there to visit friends, but I also
belong to a couple of the area’s wine
clubs.
NIGHTSTAND
READS: You’ll find
mysteries on both
my Kindle and
iPad. I really enjoy
Janet Evanovich’s
Stephanie Plum
series. These novels
are “whodunits,” but
also laugh-out-loud
funny.
DREAM TRAVEL
COMPANION:
Julia Child. I still
watch reruns of her
programs on public
television. She got me
interested in cooking
and baking; I just love
her.
CHERISHED KEEPSAKES:
Annual family photos. Every
year, we have professional
pictures taken with our
children, their spouses, and
our grandchildren. So I bring
an assortment of photos to
warm up my bedroom and
living room.
MUST-HAVE HOUSEWARES: I have a set of kitchen
equipment that includes everything from baking
sheets and a full set of dishes to a Kitchen Aid
mixer and slower cooker. This stuff comes with me
wherever I go.
MOBILE TUNES: Country music — particularly
TASTE OF HOME: Almond
paste by Solo. I need it for the
filling in Dutch Letters, a puff
pastry popular in Iowa, which
is hard to find in other parts
of the country.
