Two hundred people — including more than 20 newborns — were forced to evacuate. After firefighters carried some of the babies down nine flights of stairs to waiting ambulances, nurses ensured they were out of harm’s way. That’s a dynamic scenario, but dynamic is sometimes part of a nurse’s job. Sometimes, a NICU nurse like Margaret O’Leary will receive some form of recognition for a job well done; many times they won’t. However, as we do in every December issue, O’Leary joins others comprising the 2012 Travelers of the Year. Part of a class of dedicated practitioners, these travelers are special, like Barbara Weixel, an emerAn emergency gency nurse who each year travels to South Africa to reminds us render nursing care to orphans. that healthcare Physical therapist Cheryl professionals are Reed lives in Ecuador six month out of the year, critical assets where she runs an organic coffee farm. According to colleagues, Reed is able to fulfill both of her passions of providing a clinical medical practice here, and conducting organic farming to assist the indigenous people of Ecuador. Sometimes fortitude, dedication, and a strong spirit take various forms, like Dana Beagle, who works as a cardiovascular operating room technician. Dana is a mother and the sole provider for her family. She travels with her husband and three young children, providing home schooling along the way. Of course, many travelers would struggle if not for the support of a good recruiter. In this issue we also recognize staffing professionals like Kristin Zandee, who was nominated because of her compassion, empathy, and effort to accommodate the travelers she works with. Yes, sometimes a national disaster brings out the best in healthcare professionals. Sometimes their best is on display year round. So, to celebrate the good works that all of these travelers and recruiters accomplished throughout 2012, join us in saying: job well done. Keeping files, schedules, and professional contacts organized is essential for long-term success. We asked Cynthia Kinnas, president of Randstad Healthcare, Cynthia Kinnas to answer our questions about how travelers can keep it all together when they’re constantly on the move. Kinnas was recently appointed as the new president of the National Association of Travel Healthcare Organizations, starting Jan. 1. HT: How challenging can it be for a traveler to remain organized? Kinnas: They say it can be overwhelming to keep track of who they’ve talked to about which assignments, and that keeping their files in order so they can act quickly when good opportunities come along is critical. Being on top of the details and keeping files current has become even more important as the demand for travelers has picked up over this past year. They have many more choices of assignments, which means keeping more information at their fingertips. HT: What’s the benefit of keeping detailed notes, regardless of the system you use? Kinnas: It’s not uncommon for a traveler who works with multiple agencies to hear about the same assignment from several of them at around the same time. But the pay packages and benefits being offered may be different, so keeping thorough notes 8 ∣ Healthcare Traveler December 2012 magenta cyan yellow black will help you make the best decision. Good records will also help you avoid the embarrassing situation of letting your file be presented by more than one agency to the same hospital. That makes everyone look bad and some facilities will reject a candidate based on that mistake alone. A traveler should never work with any agency that submits his or her file without clear authorization. HT: How about once a traveler has accepted an assignment? Kinnas: I suggest that travelers take notes during their acceptance and confirmation calls with recruiters. Write down everything you need to do and have ready to start working. This includes credentialing documents, pre-employment tests, health records, the works. Some travelers get delayed in starting an assignment because they waited too long to get a drug screen or titer drawn, not realizing results can take several days to become available. Being proactive and organized will result in a successful onboarding process. It also makes a good first impression on a hospital. HT: On an assignment, what sort of organizational tools are needed? Kinnas: Related to housing, find out before you’re scheduled to arrive whom to contact to get keys and get moved in. If you’re arriving late in the evening, find out how to work that out with the apartment manager. Also find out ahead of time what you need to bring. Some places provide everything down to linens and dishes; most do not. I also tell travelers to make notes or take photos of any damage to an apartment that they notice when they move in. That way, when they move out, there is no question about responsibility. AMN Healthcare last month revealed results of their 2012 Survey of Registered Nurses. Close to one-third of the respondents report that they plan to take steps in the next one-to-three years to reduce their current workload. They specifically cited changes such as shifting to part-time or less demanding roles, as well as transitioning out of nursing altogether, by retiring or seeking non-nursing jobs. In addition, 40 percent of respondents plan to pursue further education in nursing during the next one to three years. AMN says the data also suggest how nurses currently view the quality of nursing care, and whether healthcare reform will help address the predicted nursing shortage. The law requires everyone no matter where they were born to prove their citizenship or legal residency to renew their professional licenses. With too few state workers to process the extra paperwork, licenses for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals are expiring. Enactment of the law coincided with budget cuts that reduced the office staff by 40 percent. According to GPB News, Kelly Farr, Georgia’s deputy secretary of state, says 600 nurses alone have fallen through the cracks. “There’s nothing more frustrating than getting that call from the desperate nurse, knowing ... she’s being slowed down because we literally don’t have enough people to click the approve button,” Farr says. Director LaSharn Hughes says she sent 41,000 letters of notification out on a recent Thursday. “And by Monday, we’d burned up a fax machine,” Hughes says. “We didn’t have the staff. We didn’t have the equipment.” Hughes estimates about 1,300 doctors and other medical practitioners have lost their legal ability to work. Some didn’t submit the required paperwork. Others are stuck in the backlog of applications that haven’t been processed yet. At the ready 12 ∣ magenta cyan yellow black Healthcare Traveler December 2012 Travel and shelter As discussed in the September 2012 Paws for Thought, you should invest in a crate or have a seat belt already in place and ready for travel. Make an evacuation plan before you leave. This is especially important for healthcare travelers new to a particular area. Look at packing these items: • fully-charged cell phones, chargers, blankets, flashlights, weather radio with batteries, food, water, and essential supplies that you will use; • a list of local emergency shelters, including which shelters accept crated pets that are current on vaccines; • phone numbers for hotels that accept pets. The city was named in honor of Demens birthplace, St. Petersburg, Russia. Its seaside location and ability to market itself as a tourist destination helped put St. Petersburg on the map. Because the city’s natural and recreational amenities were crucial to its tourism industry, development of the waterfront became a high priority. The early 20th century brought an influx of land speculators and tourists who poured capital into the city. Brandy’s father, a mobile nurse, passed the travel bug on to his daughter when she was a little girl. “In the ‘70s and ‘80s, my dad had a leatherworking shop. We traveled to amusement parks where he sold custommade belts and jewelry to happy tourists. I was able to go on all the rides for free and spent time reading books behind the counter of my parents’ shop. What more could a young girl ask for?” Three years ago, Brandy opened her own ‘pop-up’ shop in the form of an etsy store. She creates a beautiful array of leather goods, including custom pieces, inspired by a love of drawing, design, and reading. Travel is also a major muse. “I have lived in 32 places in 32 years,” Brandy relates. “I found the West and found myself.” Her luggage tags are handmade, one-of-a-kind, leather art pieces that have been hand carved, tooled, stamped, stained, dyed, and painted. Homeschooling is traditionally defined as the art of using one or several techniques to provide education to your child. There are several approaches including the conventional use of books; modern methods, which are Epstein LaRue computerbased; technical, comprising computer and Internet usage; and the more relaxed method of “unschooling.” In the last, the student learns from everyday life. For instance, he might study math by keeping a record of what he earns for allowance and subtracting the amount he spends. Homeschooling parents can also involve children in everyday math problems, such calculating the cost of groceries, their taxes, and the gas needed to get to the store. Subjects like science and geography are taught by exploring the world around you. Before you get started on a home schooling course, determine your child’s learning preference. Is he an audio/visual learner? Does he like to read? Perhaps he enjoys spending time on the computer. It may be clear from the onset or you might have to experiment with a couple of techniques. Initially, I thought my child would prefer learning on his PC. But, he found it more 44 ∣ magenta cyan yellow black Healthcare Traveler December 2012 difficult and ultimately preferred the conventional method. Choosing a curriculum Several companies—including AlphaOmegas Lifepaks (aoacademy.com), A Beka Book (abeka.com), and Bob Jones (bjupress.com) — still produce textbook-style options. With my son, I used a combination of the Lifepaks and A Beka programs. Computer programs and online schooling are another option for this technological age. Through this alternative, you would guide your child through online classes or courses sent to you on compact disc. These programs do not require as much instruction by the parent, but they do need supervision. I tried “Switched On Schoolhouse” (aophomeschooling.com/switched-onschoolhouse), Alpha Omega’s classes on disc. Via a network, the student turns in his lessons electronically. The teacher gets notifications when the student completes a lesson that has been graded and needs review. Monarch (aophomeschooling.com/monarch) is Alpha Omega’s new online classroom where all instructions are completed on the Internet. Other online classes include K-12 (k12.com), Time For Learning (time4learning.com), The Grace Academy (thegraceacademy.org), and the Robinson Curriculum (robinsoncurriculum. com). Check your state board of education for programs that they might have. Graduation is accomplished by achieving a curriculum that produces a diploma after the child has completed all the required classes for general high school, or he or she can pass the GED test. You can obtain a file box big enough to handle all of you records, including your traveling receipts, travel records, and homeschool records. State laws To find out about the laws in my home state of Arizona, I contacted a local homeschool association and discovered all I needed was a signed affidavit stating I was taking my child out of the public school system. As we went from assignment to assignment, I looked up the homeschool laws for each new area. This is easily accomplished by visiting the Homeschool Legal Defense Website (hslda.org). In Tennessee, we had to give a copy of the affidavit to the apartment complex and write a letter to the school administration. In our experience, the Volunteer State was the most restrictive because it also required a homeschooled child’s parent to have a bachelor’s degree. The biggest challenge we encountered was when my child turned 15 and wanted to start driving. Every state has a different law dictating the age and privileges of a young driver. But as a traveler, you are a resident of your home state, which can complicate matters if you are thousands of miles away from home. In other states, a minor can be deemed a resident of a given state if he or she has a part-time job there. While on assignment, I enrolled my son in an online driver’s education program. It covered the requirements for all states and can be found at driversed.com. Also, my insurance company gave me a discount for enrolling my child in the program. You should check with your insurance agent to see if a similar benefit is offered or if he recommends a different program. Then, after your child completes the course and you return to your home state, he or she will be ready to take a driving exam. Graduation is accomplished Extra credit example, we told a ranger we were homeschooling our son, and he gave us a tour of a working lighthouse. Such diverse, unexpected lessons are part of the educational adventure. You can try to plan at least one field trip every week to keep things interesting. Like a lot of healthcare professionals, prior to becoming a traveler, I thought I had to give my child a “stable environment.” Thankfully, through homeschooling, I discovered I could do that and also present him with opportunities to learn from different locations and cultures throughout the country. HT One of the greatest added benefits of homeschooling while you travel: Your child gets to experience something new as often as every 13 weeks.
