was born on May 5, 1953 at North Sound, Virgin Gorda to the late
Waiter and Iva Rymer. He was the second of six children. Joel moved with his parents to live at Towers,
West End at the young age of two and completed his school at the then West End Methodist School. As a
young boy Joel spent much of his spare time fishing with his brother Frankie on the Towers wharf.
As a young adult Joel found employment in many areas. He worked as a jewelry sales persons for Kaunda and
later as a chef at Peter Island Hotel. In 1980, he moved to St. Thomas and continued to showcase his culinary
skills at the Sheraton Hotel.
While in St. Thomas he married Yvonne "Netty" Tumbull and from that union had two children, Janelle and
Jarrel. Joel was also the father of sons, Joel Jr., Jasin and Vemard.
Joel returned back to Tortola in 1983 and moved to Cane Garden Bay to live with his wife. He took up employment at the Moorings where he stayed until his retirement in 2008. Joel loved his days at the Moorings
and would often be heard singing only hymns before going on yacht pick-up trips to St. Marten. During those
years, Joel also continued the showcasing of his culinary skills as he worked part time at Quito's, Paradise
Club, and De Wedding in Cane Garden Bay. Netty opened Netty's Diner in 1997 and you did not have to
wonder where to find Joel when he was not at the Moorings. Netty's Diner was just one way in which Joel
was able to showcase himself as a culinary ambassador.
"Late Man", as he affectionately called by many, was a man of few words and his mother would always call
him when the nieces and nephews needed a little "straightening out". Joel's authoritative look on his face said
it all and even if he did not pull the belt they knew it was time to get "in-line". He also did his part in straightening out many of the young boys in Cane Garden Bay with whom he developed a strong bond.
In 2012 Joel was recommended for dialysis due to illness. This illness took a toll on his life as he was unable
to do most of the things he liked best. His family along with the "Bay Boys" rallied around him to make sure
that he received the care and attention he needed. Joel fought through many trying days and hospital stays
with God being his helper.
On August 10, 2014, he took ill and was hospitalized at Peebles Hospital. The doctors and nurses worked feverishly to try and restore his health but on August 21, 2014 he succumbed to his illness and died peacefully.
A peace which left a glow on his face that has caused those present at the time to continuously speak about. A
peace which it seems only God could grant. He will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved
him.
Daddy, Joel, My brother, Mandril, Lateman, Manu has come to the end of his earthly journey. May his soul
rest in peace.
