It is a social occasion where acquaintances meet and catch up and where strangers chat in the queues. After making their mark, voters buy coffee and boerie rolls from the Lions and the party continues. This year was no exception. They won Best Stall at the launch held this year at the The Bon Hotel Riviera where, because of the cramped conditions, it was difficult to be very creative. Here the team holds their trophy aloft. The Merchant Hotel in Springbok road, just opposite the Henley Station, was another new comer to the Vaal Wine Route. Here Quinton Petterson serves some wine to Diederick Rosslee who is the owner of the hotel and of Hebron which abuts the hotel. The manner and spirit in which the residents of ward 15 came out to vote and the fact that you all cared enough to come out to vote made me very, very proud to be the councillor for this ward. To the representatives of the other parties who stood in this ward, I also want to say a big thank you for the manner in which you fought this campaign and the manner in which you congratulated me on my win. You made me very, very proud to be a South African. I would also like to say thank you to the two lady members of the much maligned SAPS, who sat outside the voting station from early in the morning until the last IEC official had been transported home. They sat in the freezing cold of that night with great good will and humour. I totally salute you both. A final thank you to all the activists who helped during registration and voting. I will admit that after the protests in the run-up to August 3, I was indeed worried and the omens did not augur well. The true triumph of these elections is the manner in which they were conducted. We have proved once again that we are most definitely NOT a banana republic but a democracy of remarkable maturity. This is a watershed moment because it means South Africa is no longer a country dominated by one party. For long, we have been slowly edging towards being a proper, lively, multi-party system that holds power to account. We are now almost at that point. South Africans are using the ballot box to speak to their leaders and that can only be a good thing. It is an exciting and exhilarating time to be a South African. I will be continuing to work on behalf of ward 15 in council and I am always available to listen to you. If I am teaching, my phone may be switched off but leave me a message and I will get back to – Councillor Parsonson you. At the Total Garage stop street, Cllr Parsonson and DA activist Phumi Nebe (of the AOG Conference Centre) handed out copies of the mayor's letter explaining the background of the unrest and protests in Sicelo just days before the election 083 969 1430 Dr Brenda Schlachter (B.Sc., B.V.Sc.) Streekleier: DA Vaal Streek The election numbers The table below shows the seat allocation in the four municipalities comprising Sedibeng district. The total number of votes cast in Midvaal was 71643. (Continued from Page 1) returned from Texas, stood for the VF+. Incumbent councillor Lynda Parsonson (seen in conversation with the EFF representative in the pic on page 1) increased her majority from 74% to more than 80%. – Ed J In a democracy it's your vote that counts. If you ask anyone in Henley who isn't an active member of Henley Watch, they will probably tell you something like: “Oh, it's just a local neighborhood watch group” or, “It's just a bunch of local residents who chase after member's alarms when activated.” FACT: Henley Watch has been operating for 25 years and while it may have started out as a typical neighborhood watch group, it has transformed into a very sophisticated and effective security organisation that offers a service that equals or betters that of any professional security company but is controlled and operated entirely by the residents of Henley. It offers 24/7 radio alarm monitoring with armed response as well as a dedicated emergency phone number that is linked to the control centre for community members who don't have alarm systems or simply require assistance in and around the Village. In addition to the dedicated armed response vehicle that never leaves the village, HW has a dedicated group of volunteer patrol personnel who constantly monitor the Village and respond to any suspicious activities that may be seen or reported. The Watch, as its affectionately known, is a nonprofit, community driven organisation that is funded by its members and offers a range of services to its community members. One example is its Escort me home service that operates throughout the Village. 'The Watch' is able to assist its members with First aid, dog poisoning, emergency services and has strong links with other community service providers such as CPF, doctors, vets, clergymen, Henley Pet Network, to name a few. No! Henley Watch is not just another neighborhood watch. It is actually one of the most successful and effective community service and anti-crime groups in the country and will continue to be so as long as it retains the support of the Henley community. We salute our members and thank you all for making HW what it is. You are 'The Watch'. Become a true Henleyite and join “The Watch” Do you want to make a Difference? On Saturday 23 July Henleyites lit up the braais and cooked dozens of wors rolls to help feed and support our local law enforcement personnel. With most of Midvaal's Police, CPF and Emergency Services personnel working 24/7 to protect us all from the violent protests, the least we as citizens could do is show our appreciation and support by providing sustenance to our brave and tireless defenders of the lifestyle that we have come to expect and cherish in this unique area that we call home. Like our neighbours in Golf Park and Meyerton, the people of Henley answered the call by donating food, beverages, money and time in a united stand against lawless activities in our region. The generosity of our great community was so good that we had enough wors and rolls to supply a second batch to SAPS & CPF on Monday night. Thank you and well done to all who contributed to this great cause and especially to Danie Mohr whose initiative made it all possible. We remain Proudly Midvaal. – Alan Hunt For 27 years Ginny Mes has been a well-known figure in Henley. Now she has relocated to the Cape (Durbanville) Ginny, and her husband Peter, moved to Henley to their house in Regatta Road. She was active on Henley Watch and the Rate Payers'. She and Gordon Paterson started the Henley Herald in competition with the Henley Chronicle until the Chronicle folded and then theirs was the only newspaper in the village. When Gordon's health started failing, she handed the Herald over to the present editors. Ten years ago, at the urging of Irma Coetzee, she started the Henley Bird Club, Birds of a Feather, (BOAF) although at the time she knew little about birds. The club under her leadership, boundless energy and enthusiasm has grown to be a respected satellite club of Wits Bird Club (WBC). She brought Raymond Hobson's fledgling bird sanctuary under the wing of the club and this has since grown to be part of every birder's To Do list. All these achievements brought her to the attention of the WBS committee and she was persuaded to become programme director there, a job that she executed with flair and efficiency. At a farewell lunch h e l d i n h e r h o n o u r, birders from Denysville, Vanderbijl and Jo'burg heaped praise on her. Here she is seen with the present chairman of BOAF, Dave Ludlow, accepting a memento. – Ed The Henley Herald August 2016 Page 7 From The Editors So the elections are done and dusted and now we can just sit back and moan when they don't deliver/don't listen/don't respond immediately. No! Wrong. Did you read Wynand Engelbrecht's article in last month's Herald. (One of our on-line readers was so impressed, she put it on facebook. If you missed it go to our website) Wynand gently chided us for thinking the election is the end of our involvement, that getting the right party into power will solve all our problems. What this extended election period should also have done is develop in us is an awareness of the importance of our personal involvement in civic or community affairs. This issue is full stories of community coming together to help others (supporting the police) and getting things done themselves. Spring is coming. Let this be a time for you to join a service organisation such as the Lions or Rotary; help with the scouts or the soccer team; become an active member of Henley Watch or CPF, or both; join the River Clean-up Team or Henley at Heart. It needn't all be selfless: Support local businesses by eating at local restaurants and hiring local artisans. No need to rush off to Jo'burg for plants for your spring garden as we have two nurseries right here. Don't forget the pavement garden competition. We have a number of nominations but there must be others worthy of a look by our judges. You can nominate yourself if your friends don't do it. Just the address will do if you see a good pavement. On 9 July, 1st Henley Cubs and Scouts found themselves attending their weekly pack meeting, with a few extra pack members, namely Elma Postma and the production crew from Mooiloop. Elma Postma is one of the presenters of Mooiloop, a travel and lifestyle program broadcast on SABC 2 on Wednesday evenings at 20:30. Henley on Klip was chosen to feature in an episode for season 3. Along with a number of other clips filmed between 8 and 9 July, which covered local businesses and points of interests, 1st Henley Cubs and Scouts were approached to participate in the filming. The 1st Henley Scouts opened the pack meeting with prayer, and the hoisting of the flag. Thereafter, the scouts set out to show Elma and the production crew how a warm up game of cricket is played. Then, it was time for the serious work to start, as the scouts undertook a pioneering activity that involved the construction of A-frames, using only wooden poles and ropes. There were some killer knot-tying skills on show that day The club's Cubs were included, too. They were divided into teams and sent out into the wild to collect the necessary resources for building and lighting fires. The cubs used the open fires to cook wors and braai bread on sticks, proving again that there may yet be a Bear Grylls among them. The cubs ensured that their guests did not leave empty handed, and Elma was provided with her own pad kos in the form of a tasty piece of wors and braai bread. In February this year, an idea sprouted into the formation of the Walkerville Farm Produce Network (WFPN). This collaborative initiative serves as a supportive, inclusive network for growers, producers, informal and established suppliers, clients and consumers of, fresh farm produce, agricultural services and home industries in the Midvaal area of Gauteng, South Africa. Our objectives include supporting and encouraging our community to make efficient, productive and sustainable use of available space on their smallholdings; identifying and sharing business opportunities among small-scale growers and producers, and end user buyers; providing a product and service offering Executivethrough Mayor, which Councillor Bongani are Baloyi, platform consumers able to source directly from hands out blankets at the AGS Kerk in Riversdale the WFPN's members; progressively developing our client base and accessing emerging opportunities; exchanging information of relevance to our members; engaging governmental and private participation in sustainable agricultural projects of benefit to our community and key stakeholders. Page 11 and much more. The result is an offering of fresh, healthy, quality produce at cost-efficient prices for consumers. The availability of and access to our area's fresh farm produce is well received and as awareness shifts, more people are gravitating from other parts of Gauteng and further afield to source locally. With consistency and sustainable growth, we envision dedicated physical channels marrying growers with end users. Current membership of our Facebook group is well over 400 and growing. The group offers a visible platform for members to advertise their product or service offerings and to cross-pollinate on ideas, information, projects and resources. We welcome news and updates of agricultural relevance and benefit to users of the group. Ultimately, the expansion and progressive success of this initiative requires pragmatic support and collective input. We welcome and encourage active participation. Facebook group: Walkerville Farm Produce Network – Gauteng, South Africa – Izetta de Sa Out and about from Henley Inval by Val Just off the R21 to Standerton, 20km beyond Greylingstad, and 100km from Henley, lies the tiny hamlet of Val; just a hotel, tiny church and a police station. The nearby silos indicate that farming is the cornerstone of the economy. The menu at the hotel is very short but worth reading the non-food pages which detail the history of this interesting spot that started as a stage coach post. Then choose the excellent steak. No vegetarian options here. Wait a few months before visiting because there is a lengthy stop/go where they are fixing the road outside Greylingstad. The trip could be combined with seeing the sights of Heidelberg but do not bother going into Balfour or Greylingstad. Those are two depressed little towns. The WFPN cooperative stall, operating since the market's inception on 16 April 2016, offers small-scale growers and producers of fresh farm produce in Midvaal the opportunity to showcase and sell their produce directly to the general public. Produce on offer varies weekly and includes seasonal fresh farm vegetables and fruit, free range chicken, free range eggs, dairy, raw honey, jams, syrups, preserves, mushrooms VinRose Solutions Websites and photography For a free quote contact Vincent Murray 079 600 3517 Blood Donation Dates – O'Connor Hall Diarise the following dates to donate blood. We can all benefit from an exercise programme. This is particularly important for our senior citizens. As we get older we become weaker because of the loss of muscle tissue. This does not only happen because we are getting older, but also because we are living sedentary lives. We need to stimulate our muscle fibres in order to keep them healthy and strong: the term “use it or lose it” comes to mind. When we look at an exercise program for an elderly person, we have to look at current activity levels and health. I would not suggest anyone just to start running around the block. Always seek the advice of your doctor, before you start exercising. As an example: we are working with a healthy 70 year old male or female: We can start off with a walk around the complex where he or she stays, possibly a distance of 400m at a medium pace three times per week. Then some exercises: Roll the arms around forwards and backwards, side to side. Do 10 hip light rotations. This is to get the body used to some activity and getting some movement in the joints. Get a set of light dumbbells (1.5kg) for some resistance training two times per week. Seated shoulder presses (1), seated biceps curls (2), triceps kickbacks (3), dumbbell lateral raises (4), one arm rows (5). These are just some of the exercises you can do with just one set of dumbbells. The above routine of walking and resistance training, may stimulate muscle fibres, slowing the process of muscle breakdown (due to age), improve cardio vascular function and give a sense of wellbeing. Joining your local gymnasium will also have benefits. There is a broad spectrum of machines you can use. Have an instructor show you the correct way of doing exercises, and advise you on increasing the intensity of your exercise plan. – Tiaan van Wyk Manager and personal trainer at Health and Fitness club Midvaal 016 362 1335 WE ARE THE OFFICIAL DISTRIBUTORS OF EPOL PRODUCTS AT WHOLESALE PRICES YOU’VE KNOWN THE BRAND SINCE 1913 NOW AVAILABLE ON YOUR DOORSTEP STOCKISTS OF EPOL PRODUCTS MIXED FOWL FEED, CRUSHED MAIZE etc. MILK REPLACEMENT DOG FOOD GRASS BALES / LUCERNE We are also doing garden compost at very good prices We welcome Windy Corner.
