The four Sundays in the program have helped us see the importance of giving to God in all areas of our lives. To date, our personal financial commitments to our shared ministry have exceeded $93,000. The Stewardship & Finance Ministry is pleased that these generous gifts can be used to carry out the many programs currently underway as part of our shared ministry at FCC Harrisonville. Our financial commitments represent our personal commitment to respond to God’s overflowing generosity, and also allow our church to bring our hopes and dreams of ministering to our local and extended community to fruition. Commitment cards are still available at the back of the sanctuary if you were not able to complete a card last Sunday. You are also welcome to contact the church office or our Financial Secretary Sophia Smither if you would like a card mailed to you. We are grateful to be a part of such a generous church family, and together seek God’s guidance to live out the ministry entrusted to us. Thank you. In March Tiffany and I had the pleasure of taking Michael and some of his friends out to see a movie for Michaels Birthday. We took them to see the animated movie “The Croods,” a story a of a prehistoric cave family discovering the world and learning a great deal about each other along the way. This was a great movie and it had a really great message. Here is one of the quotes from the movie that really intrigued me. Grug (the dad): Tonight we'll hear the story of Crispy Bear. A long time ago this little bear was alive because she listened to her father. So she was happy, but Crispy had one terrible problem. She was filled with curiosity. Yes, and one day she saw something new and died! Thunk (the son): Just like that? Grug: Yes! Gran (the grandmother): Same ending as everyday Thunk: I get it, dad. I will never do anything new or different. Grug: Good man, Thunk" Grug, the father of this family, believed that the only way to keep his family safe was to keep them far away from anything that was new. That is what the cave was for, to keep everyone safe and away from anything new because if they tried something new they would surely die. What does it mean for us as Christians to believe in New Life as Easter people? This is an important question as we continue to remember this time of New Life and Resurrection. I am reminded of the reaction of many of the disciples in the Easter accounts found in the Gospels. Disciples were fearful, disbelieving, scared, doubting, and even locking themselves in a room away from whatever was outside. Certainly there were dangers for the followers of Jesus; after all they were seen as being followers of a revolutionary by the Roman Empire. As we continue to live into Eastertide we celebrate a time of New Life and Resurrection. And if we can get past the commercialization of candy and Easter baskets we might be able to admit to ourselves that New Life is indeed scary; anytime we experience something new there is always the chance that things might not go well or how we expected. New Life in Christ is scary and even fearful; for if we are believers in the Resurrection of Christ, our lives can’t help but be changed in a dramatic way. I encourage you this week, month, and year to explore what New Life means to you, come out of your cave, and experience the newness of the Risen Christ! Shalom, Adam I think it is time that we continue our journey to the great BBQ restaurants around KC. This time we will be partaking of the wonderful BBQ at Jack Stack in Martin City. Mark your calendars for June 15 to attend the New Theatre Restaurant with a group from church to see "Weekend Comedy," starring Cindy Williams from Laverne & Shirley! A bus will leave the church at 10:00am to go to the theater, be seated, and eat lunch. The show begins at 1:15pm. Tickets are $32.00, and the cost for the bus will be divided among those riding it. The more people who go, the smaller the cost for transportation! If you are interested, please sign up in the back of the church. Thanks to all volunteers. Our next Food Pantry day is scheduled for July 5. Current collecting cleaning kits for Hope Haven. “Bucket of Bubbles” on bulletin board in narthex. Bubbles have individual items listed that are needed. The 28 is last day for this. Pentecost “Moments for Missions” will be May 12, as Pastor Adam wanted to share at both services with the special offering on the 26. Ps.118:24 So...have a great day! Woodhaven places a great value on its association with the church, as it provides roots and a context in Christian love for Woodhaven's mission. Churches throughout the Mid-America Region and the nation support Woodhaven through the Disciples Mission Fund, direct outreach gifts, CWF/DWM projects, clipping Campbell's and Best Choice barcodes, mission trips and prayer. Through its connection with the church, Woodhaven is a national leader in services for individuals with disabilities, consistently receiving the highest level of accreditation for its programs and winning awards like the Jackie Davenport-Orton Outstanding Provider Award, which it won in 2007 from the Central Missouri Regional Office of the Department of Mental Health HFCC is collecting the UPC Bar Code from Campbell's products to help supply Woodhaven with education programs and materials. Bring you UPC Bar code to the church in place them in the basket located on the back table or give them to Beverly Tinsley. The Save-A-Label program is an extremely successful program, which helps non-profit organizations raise money. Currently, there are over 11,000 non-profit groups in the AWG trade area that participate in the program. These groups earn $.03 for each Best Choice UPC symbol redeemed, with a minimum of 1,000 labels required for redemption. This program represents more than 1.2 million cases of Best Choice products purchased by consumers in one year! So by participant this the Save-A-Label program for 1,000 labels Harrisonville First Christian Church could collect $30.00. And once a year, with a certificate we will receive $60.00. START SAVING THOSE BEST CHOICE LABELS! ~Deborah Group met on April 8, 2013 with five (5) present. We sent three cards and discussed those in need of prayers. The Westline Christian Church Women's Retreat will be held June 8 at 9:00 AM. We will carpool from the church at 8:30 AM for anyone who is interested in attending. Judy Manning read a poem, written by Russell Kelfer, from “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren. Jean Boston gave the lesson on “Heaven”, written by Randy Alcorn. Will we be ourselves in Heaven? The Bible says we will, but we will always be happy and will have no unholy thoughts or desires. Thank you, Ruth Cummins, for the delicious cake! Our next meeting will be May 13th at 1:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Ellen Wray will provide the lesson on “Heaven”. This will be our last “official” meeting until September. Our June 10th meeting will be at Ryan's buffet in Raymore at 11:30 AM for lunch and fellowship. We warmly welcome all ladies to join us. ~Rachel Circle met on April 9 in the fellowship hall at 7:00pm. The meeting was opened with the CWF Prayer. Nancy gave a book report on the flower, the Violet according to the biblical history. Then there was a very short meeting. After that, Sophia Smither presented a program. After playing the game we closed the evening with the CWF Benediction and had refreshments, furnished by Sophia Smither. Thursday, May 9 @ 11:30am Meeting at Branding Iron CHANCEL CHOIR Wednesdays 7:00pm-8:00pm 5 YOUTH Tall Oaks for their Summer Kick-Off. On Sunday, May 5, 2013. Youth are asked to be at the church for the 10:30am worship service and will leave for Tall Oaks following the service. During May, the youth will be furnishing the meals with the help of their leaders. We would like to thank all who have provided such wonderful meals for us this school year. Also, we are proud to announce that Andrea Smither has stepped up to work with the youth. She will add so much to our group. From flooding across a couple of Midwestern states to explosions in Texas and Boston to Friday's report of a devastating earthquake in China, it seemed like one couldn't turn on the news without another report of tragedy. As always, the faithful support of congregations and individuals across North America and the faithful partnership of our partners both here and around the globe have allowed Week of Compassion to respond. Week of Compassion has been in touch with the Northeast Region and several ecumenical partners to see if there are needs emerging as a result of the Boston Marathon explosion. Likewise, we are currently working with the Southwest Region and Central Christian Church, Waco, Texas, to respond to needs emerging from last week's explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas. In addition, we will continue to monitor the situation so that we might support long-term recovery efforts in West. We have also responded to churches and church members affected by flood damage in Indiana and Illinois, and through our partners in Global Ministries, to needs emerging from a devastating earthquake, measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, that rattled the Sichuan region in western China on Friday. If you would like to help bring comfort to communities facing tragedy, be part of relief efforts all over the world, and join our movement of Courageous Compassion, donate to week of compassion. Thank you for all the ways you have expressed concern over the past week. Pastor Adam opened with reading a newsletter about “change”, written by Gary Blakeman in 1992. Communion was served. The March 19, 2013 minutes of the Official Church Board were approved as presented. Pastor’s Report: Pastor Adam reported that he received favorable comments about the Maundy Thursday service. He is very happy about how Holy Week and Easter turned out, and he is thankful for the work done by our Worship Ministry Group. He made 2 hospital calls and 10 pastoral calls. He has been thinking a lot about how we will continue to live into our resolutions for the coming year as a church. A complete report is filed in the office with these minutes. Christian Education: Sherry Krohn reported they met April 2 with 4 present. They met with the Methodist Church on April 10. Vacation Bible School is set for July 22 through 25 at Lord's Park for children 4 years of age through 5 th grade. They are discussing having a nursery area set up at one of the churches for children 3 years of age and under. They also discussed summer Sunday School ideas. Membership: Nancy Emmons reported they met April 2 with 9 present. The “theme baskets” will be auctioned following the 10:30 AM service on April 28 with proceeds going to the pastor's discretionary fund. There will be a special basket available for people to donate gift cards or money directly to the discretionary fund. Membership is providing ham, scalloped potatoes, applesauce, and rolls for the lunch. Please bring a salad, vegetable, or dessert if attending. Membership made up baskets for members who are sick, in nursing homes, etc. They discussed projects for May through August. They planned a trip to the New Theater to see “Weekend Comedy” starring Cindy Williams on June 15. Membership and Property are coordinating a project to landscape the southeast side of the church. Outreach: Joyce Hawley reported they met April 2 with 8 members present. KFC Sunday is May 5 th. They were pleased to work with Worship Ministry on the “New Life Baskets” for Hope Haven women and children. This is a great ministry, and there was wonderful participation. Thanks to Lynnette Pugh for being the contact and delivery person. They are working on Cleaning Kits for Hope Haven. The “Bucket of Bubbles” is on the bulletin board in the narthex. The bubbles list items needed. April 28 is the deadline for this project. Volunteers are needed for our April 19 food pantry day. Sign-up sheet is in the sanctuary. Bright Futures bin in the Fellowship Hall is collecting new or gently used books for summer reading to keep up reading skills for grades K-12. Pick-up dates are April 17th and 24th. They would appreciate having items boxed or bagged for easy transport. Normally, items are picked up the first Wednesday of the month. Pentecost Moments for Mission will be May 12. The Pentecost special offering is Sunday May 26. Property: Lyle Krohn reported they met April 2 with 4 present. Lyle advised the Board that the broken parking blocks have been replaced. The security camera entry system has been installed on the middle east door by the office. A list of jobs has been created for the work day on April 27. A new thermostat was installed in the sanctuary by the choir loft. The Baptistery leak is being repaired. Potential concrete repairs near the office have been assessed. Landscaping options were discussed and coordinated with Membership. Plans are being developed for painting the Education wing hallway. 10 Stewardship & Finance: Cheryl Tinsley reported they met April 2 with 6 present. We reviewed the report from the Financial Review Committee (attached to Cheryl's report). There were no discrepancies found, and recommendations are being implemented as possible. Stewardship & Finance will host the fellowship time after the 8:00 AM service and have a reception after the 10:30 AM service on April 21 to celebrate the success of the stewardship emphasis. Pledge cards will be distributed and received at the April 21 services. The credit card policy is being reviewed and updated as needed. Worship: Jamie Matthews reported that following the busy Easter season they did not meet. Jamie advised the Board that the New Life baskets for Hope Haven women and children went over beautifully. Elders: The elders will be back to meeting on schedule the end of April. Unfinished Business: Lyle Krohn reported the security camera is functioning and wiring has been secured in the office. New Business: Lyle Krohn moved we not have a May Board meeting. Motion carried. Business needing attention will be addressed if necessary. Cheryl Tinsley gave a report on the Permanent Fund, which currently has a balance of $10,794.38. The annual distribution was received in the amount of $223.93, which appears to be a 2% distribution rather than the 4% distribution expected and no explanation was provided. Cheryl will call the Christian Church Foundation for clarification. Distribution percentages are to be dispersed as follows: 10% to General Fund; 30% to Outreach; 30% to Capitol Improvement; 15% to Area/Region; and 15% to the Sabbatical Fund. Cheryl will coordinate with Treasurer Mary Parker to figure out a way to list Form 941 tax amounts on the Treasurer’s report quarterly as recommended by the Financial Audit Committee. Lyle Krohn moved that Cheryl Tinsley, Beverly Tinsley, and Pastor Adam be our voting delegates to the Orlando General Assembly in July. Motion carried. Mary Parker moved to allow the Clay Potters Garden Club to have a flower show during the Burnt District Festival. Motion carried. Cheryl Tinsley moved to take $175.00 from the funnel cake fund to pay for the funnel cake booth at the Burnt District Festival. Motion carried. Pastor Adam sent the registration for the funnel cake booth at the Burnt District Festival to the Harrisonville Chamber of Commerce. Treasurer’s Report: Mary Parker presented the financial report. Mary noted that the first insurance payment (50% of the total insurance cost) was paid late. Spending should be at 25%. Giving is at 19.71%. The report was accepted and filed for audit. Committee meetings will be held as scheduled on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 7:00 PM and on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 7:00 PM. Chairpersons meet at 6:30 PM on both dates. The Board will not meet in May. The next Board meeting is Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 7:00 PM. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned, and Butch closed with prayer.
