The idea and the name came in 2001, but it wasn’t until I arrived at Cal State San Bernardino in 2002 to take the reins of the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship (IECE) that efforts started in earnest to create the Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards program. As I met and talked with students about their aspirations for business ownership, I asked “who is your role model? What entrepreneur do you want to be like?” The answers surprised me – all the students cited people like Bill Gates, Michael Dell and Ray Kroc. None talked about local business owners. When I met and spoke with community leaders about the state of entrepreneurship in the region, many of them couldn’t cite who the best entrepreneurs were in their city. It was then that I KNEW that we needed to create an event that would recognize and celebrate our region’s best entrepreneurs – the folks that our students should aspire to be like and the ones that our local leaders should recognize are the key to economic growth in the Inland Empire. I was told by several people, including some people on campus, that it couldn’t be done. IECE had no money and was a fledgling entity. But I knew we NEEDED to do this. We were inspired and committed. We were willing to take the risk to achieve something we believed in. Just like the entrepreneurs we have recognized through this event over the last 10 years. We are incredibly proud to be celebrating our 10th anniversary, but even more proud that our heroes – the men and women who innovate, take risks and build unique businesses – are getting the recognition they deserve. YOUR ENTERTAINMENT THIS EVENING Performing to critical acclaim, Troy Clarke and his big band orchestra is a virtual who’s-who of musical talent, featuring musicians who’ve played with musical greats like Johnny Mathis, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley, Brian Setzer, Barry Manilow, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra. Critics have praised Clarke’s singing as “sultry,” and say he has a “smooth and silky voice”; his show is “the main source of cool” and “an impressive musical performance” that causes audiences to “almost instantly to dance in their seats.” CONTENTS November 7, 2012 SPIRIT OF THE ENTREPRENEUR AWARDS 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient (Cover Story) 16 Ontario Convention Center Join us on Facebook at /SpiritEntreAwards and /IECE.CSUSB MAGAZINE Editor in Chief Mike Stull Art Direction Stacey Allis Photography Robert A. It was like – wow! It was a special, magical moment. Bill Wilson, Family Business Entrepreneur, 2010 2003 The Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship (IECE) launches the Spirit of the Entrepreneur event. IECE partners with sponsor The Press Enterprise Co. to present the event the Riverside Convention Center. 400+ people attend an event that features emcee Hattie Bryant, host of the nationally broadcast PBS show Small Business School. Hattie brought her unique insight along with passion and energy for championing entrepreneurs to the event. Rose Girard’s moving acceptance speech for the General Entrepreneur Award was a highlight along with presenting the first Lifetime Achievement Award to a humble and gracious Anthony Maglica of Mag Instrument. The evening was capped off with entertainment from multiplatinum classic rock artist Eddie Money, who performed a rousing set featuring his hits “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise.” 8 2006 2004 Word got around quickly that the Spirit Awards was a great event, and attendance in our second year topped 500! Overseeing the proceedings was emcee Rieva Lesonsky, senior vice president and editorial director at Entrepreneur magazine. Joining us for the first of many appearances was Troy Clarke and his big band orchestra, who wowed the crowd with incredible tunes and showmanship. Of course the focus of the event was on the awards – those in attendance won’t forget Chris Carlson’s emotional acceptance of the Social Entrepreneur award or Jose Jara’s fitting tribute to Neal Baker of Baker’s Burgers, one of the people who inspired him to build his restaurant business. 2005 Renowned jazz and R&B guitarist Ray Fuller brought his unique talents to the event, providing incredible entertainment and the musical backdrop to another successful event. Lifetime Achievement recipient Duane Roberts provided a mixture of inspiring, funny and touching stories about his background and experience and noted the influence his parents had on his success. With a newly established Student Fast Pitch Competition at CSUSB, we decide to have the final presentations at the Spirit Awards and let the audience vote for the most promising business startup. The positive comments are overwhelming and lead to the fast pitch becoming a featured segment at all future Spirit events. The first place winner, VaNae Hamilton, receives an investment from an audience member as a result of her outstanding pitch. The incredible story of teamwork is featured in the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement award to William Young, Donald Fithian, and Luis Theisen of Columbia Steel. Antha Ward, a former CSUSB student that attended the inaugural event in 2003, achieves her goal of winning the Spirit Award. The award is a reassurance from the community – a thumbs-up that you are doing something right. Kusum Kavia, Technology Entrepreneur, 2010 Winning the award helped legitimize our business. Ben Cook, Emerging Entrepreneur, 2009 2007 We experimented with a new room configuration for the event. The verdict – it was nice but our old setup was better! Another great batch of finalists and award recipients, highlighted by the incredible story behind our Lifetime Achievement award recipients the Matich Family, Matich Foundation and Matich Corporation. The Press Enterprise Co. decides to focus on other business initiatives, leaving IECE as the sole presenter of the Spirit Awards. 2008 This year saw the introduction of the Master Entrepreneur award, given to an entrepreneur that has established and successfully grown multiple companies during his/her career or built a company or companies into clear industry leaders with sales volume in excess of $100 million. Neale Perkins was recognized for his work with Safariland and later BAE Systems. Event emcee Randal Pinkett, winner of NBC’s “The Apprentice” with Donald Trump and Chairman of BCT Partners, kept the energy high and shared a number of funny and inspiring stories. Motorcycle racing legend Malcolm Smith and wife Joyce took home the Lifetime Achievement award. TapouT founder Charles “Mask” Lewis, Jr. was recognized with the Innovator award and he and the TapouT crew of Punkass and Skyscrape were the hit of the evening. W W W.I N LAN D S PI R ITAWAR D S.C O M 9 2011 2009 In a throwback to the glamorous Hollywood events of yesteryear, the event was “broadcast” live on radio and featured intrepid radio reporter Mike Napoli as the host/ emcee of the event. Keeping with the theme, Troy Clarke and his Orchestra returned to the event to entertain with big band music. In what has now become tradition, this year’s event featured the first champagne toast to all the finalists and award recipients at the end of the evening. Due to the increasing number of nominations received, a new award category is created to recognize businesses in the service industry. Allison Mackenzie of E.S. Babcock & Sons, Inc. takes home the award in this new category. A new custom award design was unveiled - a very cool blend of granite, glass and gold and silver metal! 10 2010 In May 2010 we unveiled a tribute to past award recipients with the Spirit Awards Wall of Fame, located at CSUSB. The Wall of Fame serves as a focal point of interest and inspiration for business and entrepreneurship students at CSUSB by highlighting all past award recipients and presenting them as entrepreneurial role models. At the awards event, emcee Matt Marcy kept the crowd entertained with his unique blend of comedy and magic throughout the evening (he did not saw any of our award recipients in half!). Award recipient Mike Napoli conspired with Karen Bowerman and Al Karnig from CSUSB to surprise event founder Mike Stull with a special recognition award for his efforts in building the awards program. The incredible Bourns Family of Riverside takes home the Lifetime Achievement award. Our biggest event ever! Steven Schussler, creator of the Rainforest Cafe restaurant chain served as emcee and kept the audience captivated with inspiring and entertaining stories of how he came to launch and grow the unique theme restaurant business. Spirit graphic designer Stacey Allis created a unique painting titled “The Dreamcaster” that drew inspiration from attending and working on the event since 2007. A limited edition print of the painting was given to each of the finalists as a commemorative of the event. The Spirit of the Entrepreneur scholarship fund breaks $100,000 raised over the last nine years. Several new categories of awards are introduced to recognize entrepreneurs in manufacturing, consulting and small enterprises. Local legend Jack H. Brown of Stater Bros. Markets is recognized for his unique contributions to the grocery industry and the Inland Empire business community. 2012 It’s time to celebrate 10 years of Spirit! SPIRIT OF THE ENTREPRENEUR AND BEST BEST & KRIEGER LLP ANNOUNCE NEW AWARD TO RECOGNIZE THE REGION’S TOP ENTREPRENEUR This year’s Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards event will feature a unique new award - The “Best of the Best.” Conceived by event sponsor Best Best & Krieger LLP (BB&K) and the Spirit Awards presenter the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship (IECE) at Cal State San Bernardino, the award is deigned to recognize the “best” entrepreneur from among the 2012 award recipients. This year 25 finalists are competing to receive awards in eight (8) different categories. The Best of the Best will be the person from among those eight award recipients that best exemplifies what it means to be an entrepreneur,” said Glen Price, partner in BB&K’s Riverside office and an advisory board member of the Center for Entrepreneurship. “We wanted to look at each award recipient in terms of taking risks and building a successful enterprise that creates jobs and value where none existed before.” The Best of the Best Award will be presented at the conclusion of the Spirit of the Entrepreneur event. The award was selected by a special group of judges that included Glen Price from BB&K, Al Lewis (chairman of the Spirit Awards judging group) and past Spirit award recipients Rose Girard (2003), Ben Cook (2009) and Allison Mackenzie (2009). In making the decision for the award, the judges evaluated a variety of attributes of the 2012 award recipients including: • RISK-TAKING – has the entrepreneur taken a personal and financial risk to create a new business? • PERSEVERANCE – has the entrepreneur persevered in the face of adversity to create a successful enterprise? • INNOVATION – has the entrepreneur innovated to create a new opportunity or product? • VALUE CREATION – has the entrepreneur created new value where none existed before? • COMMUNICATION – has the entrepreneur been a leader that effectively and passionately communicates his/her vision? “We are very excited to add this new award to the Spirit Awards program,” said Mike Stull, director of the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship and founder of the Spirit of the Entrepreneur. “It adds another unique aspect to the event and is a tribute to the level of support and commitment that Best Best & Krieger is making to entrepreneurs in the Inland Empire.” Best Best & Krieger, a full-service law firm with more than 200 attorneys in nine offices across California and in Washington, D.C., has been a sponsor of the Spirit of the Entrepreneur since 2008. The firm delivers effective, timely and service-oriented solutions to complex legal issues facing public agencies, businesses and individuals. YOUR 2012 JUDGES: In order to select the top entrepreneurial success stories of the Inland Empire, the Spirit Awards convenes an elite judging panel of past award recipients and business professionals. The judges began the process this year by reviewing comprehensive background information submitted by the nominees. They then met with each of the nominees at a special reception, allowing them to learn firsthand about the nominee’s background and business. Following the reception, the judges narrowed the field down to 25 finalists. The judges based their decisions not only on financial success, but gave equal weight Amro Albanna Ben Cook Ruben Estrada Rose Girard Amro Albanna is founder and CEO of Innovation Economy Corporation, a collection of businesses designed to accelerate the creation and monetization of entrepreneurship. W W W.I N LAN D S PI R ITAWAR D S.C O M to the nominees’ accomplishments, innovative approaches, and their entrepreneurial spirit. While not an easy assignment, the 2012 Spirit of the Entrepreneur judging panel did a remarkable job in evaluating and selecting the entrepreneurial stars of the Inland Empire business community! Jon Gordon Garner Holt Kim Jones Alan H. Lewis Clemmy’s Ice Cream came to be when founder Jon Gordon was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and his doctors told him to cut sugar from his diet. Besides being a lifelong athlete, Jon was also an ice cream fanatic and he wanted to make sure no more sugar didn’t mean no more ice cream. Jon searched all over and he simply couldn’t find a decent, truly sugar-free ice cream. And so Clemmy’s was born. In January 2007 he took it upon himself to create the product he and many others needed (including diabetics) – sugar free ice cream – buying a commercial ice cream maker and experimenting with recipes. Gordon finally created the right mix of ingredients resulting in an all-natural, sugar-free, lactose-free and gluten-free ice cream that is indistinguishable from regular ice cream. Garner Holt is President and CEO of Garner Holt Productions, Inc., which he founded in 1977 while a Junior at Pacific High School in San Bernardino. At the age of twelve Garner’s parents took him to Disneyland in Anaheim. On the way home Garner told his parents, “I want to build things like Walt Disney builds.” The next day he took over his father’s garage and began to tinker with mechanical things and learn how to build animatronics figures and robots. Since that time his firm has become the recognized leader in the industry, working with clients such as Disney, Universal, MGM, NASA, Chuck E. Cheese and FAO Schwarz. Kim Ozias Jones, PT, is the President and Owner of The RehabAbilities Family of Healthcare Staffing Companies, headquartered in Rancho Cucamonga. Ms. Jones trained as a Physical Therapist, but was a stay-at-home mom when her toddler son, Matthew, was diagnosed with a serious eye disorder. Wanting to maintain a balance between work and home life, she offered her skills on an “as needed” basis to local Physical Therapy clinics. 6 weeks later, she had more job offers than she alone could handle. She and her husband Mike decided to say “yes to the possibilities” and offer therapy professionals a chance at this alternate career ladder, offering others the chance to balance work and personal commitments. Now the longest tenured Spirit Awards judge with 10 years of service, Al Lewis enjoyed a successful career at organizations such as WarnerLambert, Hunt-Wesson Foods, and the Knudsen Corporation before successfully launching and growing firms in the advertising and information technology fields. Lewis then served as Assistant Dean for External Affairs and as an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship at the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management, at the University of California, Riverside. While a faculty member, Mr. Lewis was voted “Outstanding Faculty of the Year” by the Anderson School student body for six of the eight years of his tenure at UCR. Yen decided to make disposable wipes for restaurants and launched Diamond Wipes International. From its humble beginnings in a garage-sized facility, the company now operates from major facilities in Chino and Ohio, employing more than 100 people. A great example of the American dream, Yen believes strongly that products sold in America should be made here – keeping the manufacturing process here on US soil. 15 CORNER JUDGES A Lifetime of SPIRIT Jerry Mall ~ LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD The man in the lobby of K&N Engineering looks relaxed and is dressed in business casual attire. He is soft-spoken and doesn’t fit the typical stereotype of the Chairman of the Board of a company that achieves revenues in the hundreds of millions each year. And perhaps that is why Riverside-based K&N Engineering, Inc. the world leader in air filter technology that meets the needs of the automotive, motorcycle, marine, industrial and military markets, has been so successful over the years. Founded in 1969 by motorcycle enthusiasts Ken Johnson and Norm McDonald, K&N contracted with Mall’s firm, Bloomington Tool and Die, to develop tooling for K&N’s line of innovative motorcycle air filters. Jerry Mall, a part of the K&N story from the very beginning, spent more than two decades performing every task imaginable at K&N as a hands-on executive. His keen interest in manufacturing and learning every facet of the business operation helped the company grow from a small business to a worldwide operation employing more than 700 people. He was never afraid to be on the shop floor, working side by side with employees to solve problems. In fact, that is how he started with K&N. When McDonald left K&N in 1971 to pursue a career in motorcycle racing, Mall joined Johnson as a principal owner of the company, and moved his machine shop into K&N. This brought much needed experience in mold making and tooling to the company. During his 40+ years in the business Mall has guided the dramatic expansion and growth of the company, which has locations in the US, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The company has one of the most advanced research and development facilities in the W W W.I N LAN D S PI R ITAWAR D S.C O M performance aftermarket and has incredibly advanced manufacturing and automation systems that help it offer over 6,000 models of filters. But as Mall notes, it wasn’t always easy. “We were growing all those years but it was never easy. Cash flow was always an issue. For the first 25 years of the business I hocked everything I owned to keep the company going, even my house.” Mall took over as sole owner in 1998, and has built an incredible management team that he feels mirrors his own philosophy. “They are all hands on executives and they listen to employees – they don’t think they know it all,” he noted. “When we got involved in automation of the company, they were on the floor working side by side with the employees to make sure the system worked perfectly, troubleshooting problems. You can’t be successful if you stay in your office.” Mall now serves as Chairman of the Board, and with his guidance the management team continues to grow the firm, despite the economic conditions. While his accomplishments are many, Mall is most proud that K&N is has a great team that has grown an incredible business. “I am really proud of all the great people at K&N – we hire good people and give them the reins to do the job. It is amazing that we went from nothing to the number one aftermarket air filter company in the world 42 years later,” said Mall. “In my wildest dreams I would have never imagined it. Even with that, there are still things we can do – we haven’t reached the top yet.” What started off as a highperformance accessory business for a couple of off-road motorcycle racers has turned into an innovative global company that manufacturers an improved version of the original highflow air filter for just about every car, truck, & motorcycle available today around the globe. And a big part of that success is because of a quiet, unassuming owner that understands the business from the ground up. 17 Master MEET THE BOB BURLINGAME ~ MASTER ENTREPRENEUR Bob Burlingame believes that entrepreneurship is a mindset, and successful entrepreneurs are adept at spotting opportunities and taking advantage of them. He should know – since launching Burlingame Industries in 1969, he has seen and taken advantage of many business opportunities. Burlingame, 77, learned the fundamentals of business at a young age. Growing up on a farm, he saw firsthand the importance of initiative, hard work and responsibility. A friend’s mother encouraged him to seek a college education and while in school he joined the US Navy, becoming a fighter pilot flying the F-8 Crusader jet and serving as an advanced fighter and tacticalflying instructor. While serving as a pilot he came in contact with a number of successful business people and decided that business was where he wanted to make his mark. While working for a roofing tile business, Burlingame built a machine to stack roof tiles and struck out on his own. After successfully building the business, he sold out in 1981 and retired to his Flying B Ranch in Idaho. A short eight years later he was lured back to the tile business by suppliers and customers that felt the industry needed his talent and integrity. “One piece of advice I would give aspiring entrepreneurs is that you must build and maintain relationships. Both inside the organization and outside with your customers, suppliers and industry peers, it is important to develop and sustain your relationships. You can’t do everything yourself. You need those solid relationships as well as a great team to build a successful business.” W W W.I N LAN D S PI R ITAWAR D S.C O M He hasn’t looked back since. True to his philosophy, he has stayed alert for new opportunities and has taken action to create new firms. Burlingame now has numerous businesses including Eagle Roofing Products, a manufacturer of roof tiles; Innovacyn, a manufacturer of human and animal healthcare products; Mountain Lakes Resort, a camping resort in Lytle Creek; Diamondback Express, a cargo and freight transportation firm; and the Flying B Ranch, a 4,200 acre hunting and fishing lodge. With nearly 500 employees and operations in the United States and China, the company is a unique success story. But Burlingame notes that it is more than opportunity recognition that entrepreneurs must be mindful of. “One piece of advice I would give aspiring entrepreneurs is that you must build and maintain relationships. Both inside the organization and outside with your customers, suppliers and industry peers, it is important to develop and sustain your relationships,” said Burlingame. “You can’t do everything yourself. You need those solid relationships as well as a great team to build a successful business.” Despite his company’s incredible success, Burlingame has a straightforward approach to keep the company from losing sight of what is important. “We always try to do better tomorrow than we did today, using continuous improvement,” he noted. “We have long term goals but not five-year plans. W W W.I N LAN D S PI R ITAWAR D S.C O M 25 2012 ENTREPRENEURSHIP 26 Drawing Spirit The Organization Behind The Awards After the very first Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards in 2003, a student shared how exciting and motivating it was to attend. Learning about entrepreneurship through his coursework at Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) and hearing the stories of successful local entrepreneurs at the Spirit Awards event had inspired him. It is one of Mike Stull’s favorite stories. The director of the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship (IECE) at CSUSB especially likes the final part of the story. “A year later the student called to let me know he had just started his first business,” said Stull. “He wanted to thank us for helping him find his calling. That was the moment I knew I had done the right thing taking the reins at IECE and starting the Spirit Awards.” It is just one of the many stories that Mike Stull and IECE assistant director Monica Brulé can tell about their experiences working with students and the business community. Since is humble beginnings in 1999, IECE has grown dramatically and become one of the leading entrepreneurship programs in the United States. It has been recognized multiple times by The Princeton Review, Entrepreneur magazine and EntrePoint for its achievements in entrepreneurship education and community outreach, ranking as high as #4 in the US in 2006. In 2010, the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) recognized IECE with a National Excellence in Entrepreneurship Education Award (an award won by universities such as Stanford and Penn State). W W W.I N LAN D S PI R ITAWAR D S.C O M While many people know IECE from its role in presenting the Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards each year, the program plays a unique role both on and off campus. “Many of the people that get to know us through the Spirit Awards are amazed at all the things we are doing,” said Brulé, who co-produces the Spirit Awards. “We have so many facets – everything from the academic programs in entrepreneurship to the fast pitch competition and our business assistance programs in the community.” Indeed, IECE offers a number of resources that help it support and promote entrepreneurship throughout the region. Students at CSUSB can focus their studies on how to create new ventures and learn what it takes to be an entrepreneur at both the undergraduate and graduate levels through coursework and experiential programs such as the fast pitch competition. Students with innovative startups can receive seed capital and funding through the Catalyst Venture Fund. Many students have received support from the Spirit of the Entrepreneurship Scholarship, which has funded $112,000 tuition costs over the last nine years. Aspiring and existing business owners in the community can take advantage of programs like the Women’s Business Center, Small Business Development Center and Family Business Partnership. Those programs provide no-cost business counseling and a wide variety of workshops and seminars from five (5) full-time and nine (9) part time offices strategically located throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The result: since 2003 these and other IECE business assistance programs have counseled more than 5,000 businesses, trained over 28,000 individuals and helped create 247 businesses and 981 local jobs. IECE continues to grow, with many new initiatives in process that enhance its role as the region’s leading supporter of entrepreneurship. And now that the Spirit of the Entrepreneur Awards has reached its 10th year, what is next? “We have started the process of expanding the program nationally. The plan is that in the next five years there will be Spirit of the Entrepreneur Award events around the country, coordinated by IECE but delivered on the local level by entrepreneurship centers, colleges, chambers of commerce or economic development organizations,” said Stull. “We feel we have a great model that others can leverage to support and promote entrepreneurship in their region.” 27 SPIRIT SCHOLARSHIPS Supporting the Future Generation of Entrepreneurial Spirit! In an effort to support the entrepreneurial spirit at the collegiate level and contribute to the growth and development of future entrepreneurs of the region, the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship (IECE) at California State University San Bernardino and The Press-Enterprise Co. created the Spirit of the Entrepreneur Scholarship Fund in 2003. Each year, the fund, which is generated by the proceeds of the Spirit Awards event, provides scholarships to selected undergraduate or MBA students enrolled (or planning to enroll) in the study of entrepreneurship at Cal State San Bernardino. Since 2004, over $100,000 in scholarships have been awarded to a diverse group of students, helping them to further support their education during times of increased tuition costs. IECE anticipates that recipients of the Spirit of the Entrepreneur Scholarship will launch successful entrepreneurial ventures in the Inland Empire after leaving Cal State San Bernardino and in the future may grace the stage of the Spirit Awards as a finalist or award recipient. The Spirit of the Entrepreneur Scholarship is truly seeking to plant seeds that may one day grow into successful entrepreneurs! 28 2004-2005 2009-2010 2005-2006 2010-2011 Greg Alkire Ezekiel Bonillas Jordan Holland Jennifer Simmons Ezekiel Bonillas Angela Boyd Michael Capps Brandon Carter Casey Castillo Melanie Hendricks Todd Jorgenson Xuling Wu 2006-2007 Michael Capps Jacquilyn Deniston Jill Ennis Marjorie Geiser Anil Kapoor Terence Madsen 2007-2008 Jesse Cancel Marjorie Geiser Paul Jordon Nate Kasper Ashley Sharkey Nathan Statham 2008-2009 Krystle Barnett Mostapha Elhams Marjorie Geiser Jizi Gu Kevin Johnson Yen Ma Krystle Reaser Jeremy Salvador Mostapha Elhams Barndon Gleason Ashley Patnode Prakit Sukkee Benjamin Becerra Tara Bender Alan Bigdelou Josh Franklin Daniel Millett Ashley Patnode Jacob Reece Edwin Stone Stephanie Vazquez Rachel Wolfinbarger 2011-2012 Alfonso Anaya Sandy Montoya Ashley Patnode Gareth Pronovost Edwin Stone 2012-2013 Alfonso Anaya Samantha Asi Brittany Choate Pamela Nilupuli Nayanathara Jayasinghe Ashley Patnode Carlos Salvador Yukasa Shida Edwin Stone IS YOUR BUSINESS ADA COMPLIANT?
