The design goal? To engineer the ultimate bowhunting machine. To do this they established 3 design objectives: substantially reduce noise, eliminate vibrational energy, and increase speed. A tall order, especially after shooting the award winning Hoyt bows of the past. But in the end, Hoyt engineers did just that by building a machine, with every part functioning at the highest level of performance ever achieved in a Hoyt bow. Shot noise was reduced by 5 full decibels, vibrational energy was reduced by 15% and an average of over 10 feet per second increase in speed was achieved. The design goals and objectives were not only met, but exceeded making Trykon the ultimate bowhunting machine. Our buck was with a doe and another small buck. The wind was at their backs, so my wife Vicki and I covered some ground. After two hours of crawling and glassing, we watched him turn around, then disappear. We glassed hard but we’d lost sight of all the deer. It was time to get serious. Unfortunately, we didn’t know the location of our buck, so we removed our boots and circled through the sage. Suddenly, Vicki spotted a shimmer. I raised my binoculars to see his nearly hidden, massive rack. He was bedded down. Trying to control my breathing, I moved forward. Forty yards, thirty-five. . . Something inside told me to go further. Finally at twenty-one yards, I stopped. With my heart pounding through my chest I knew it was now or never to make something happen before I was busted. I came to full draw holding my 20 yard pin where I believed his chest would be when he stood and I snorted, then wheezed. Nothing happened. I snorted again but this time much louder and his head raised towering over the thick sage. As I stood, still at full draw, my arms were growing weak and my stomach was churning with anxiety. Finally, after the longest two minutes of my life, the monster buck rose to his feet and I immediately released the arrow right into the crease. He ran forty yards then tumbled. I collapsed too. The buck ended up grossing 228 1/8 – my largest mule deer ever. It’d been a hard, exhausting yet extremely rewarding day. For me, that’s what bowhunting is all about. It’s the hard work and the reward that keep me coming back. Draw Weight: FPS Axle-to-Axle 7” 33” 316 Brace Height TRYKON™ Ralph Cianciarulo t of Beman’s Archer’s Choice Co-Host TRYKON XL TRYKON 4 POWERTEC™ TECHNOLOGY AND AFFORDABILITY UNITE. 7½” 34” 302 The all-new PowerTec and LazerTec feature Hoyt’s exclusive 3D Ribbing Technology, creating supremely stronger MMT Alloy designs that are lightweight and have little vibration. Tension hung in the air and an eerie feeling possessed the timber. We were photographing Alaskan brown bear and we wondered what dangers lay a few yards from our path, cloaked by vapor. Filled with apprehension, we eased forward. A few minutes later, my guide Sam whispered, “He’s standing on a dead moose.” A colossal bear was directly in front of us and with those words he turned and stared in our direction. Our breathing stopped. After a bone-chilling moment the big creature went back to feeding. Twigs snapped to our left, confirming our suspicion that other bears were present. They wanted the moose too. Cover was sparse, so our cameraman ducked into the last foliage while Sam and I crawled on hands and knees. We inched forward each time he tore at the moose’s flesh until we were just thirty yards away. Suddenly, the bear raised his enormous head and stared. He began to circle the dead moose. Halfway around he lowered his eyes and tilted his head. In an instant, a one thousand pound killing machine came charging toward us! The monster ran right for us and instantly Sam sprang and began screaming at the bear as I came to full draw. The bear stormed by within reach, his run missing us by inches. Then he vanished, at least for the moment into the bush. If Sam hadn’t risked his life like that there’s a good chance none of us would be here to tell this story. His risky gamble also gave us the opportunity to pull together our courage and come back the next day and get that big bruin. As serious bowhunters we take everything into consideration when designing bows… even hands. We’d just observed two huge bucks on the Wildlife Eye at camp. One giant walked past the scrape we’d been monitoring around 3:00 in the afternoon and the other visited under the cover of darkness. Both bucks were incredible trophies. Like schoolboys playing hooky, we scurried away to hang our video set in a tree just twenty yards from where the Wildlife Eye was guarding the scrape. The next afternoon we practically ran to our set. It was a cold damp day and Mark knew first-hand the importance of getting there early. Last year, on a day with similar conditions he’d arrowed a giant, so our anticipation was burning. It seemed as though our dedication to the sport of bowhunting and our development of hunting gear over the years was finally paying off. We’d gone to extremes and never before had we been armed with such information or confidence going to a stand. I had my Hoyt in hand and release aid on my wrist. We started the wait, but not for long. It was 2:30 and by 4:10 I shot the largest deer of my life – 178” and change. By the way, it wasn’t either of the two giants we’d been after. I was ready for home. I hadn’t stalked any rams and my shoulders were raw, my feet battered and I smelled bad. I was miraculously revived though, when I scoped a ram 4 miles up a glacial chasm. I packed up and was off. My sour guide reluctantly followed. We crawled for six hours, clawing and clutching our way up the mountain. At night, we hunkered under a truck-sized boulder, water dripping down our backs. At first light I scrambled up and up through the cliffs. I found the ram high above, near the summit of a monster ridge. Another three hours of scrambling and all that separated us was a narrow gorge and lots of wind. I made the shot of a lifetime but my heart sank as the ram staggered to the summit, then plunged off a 500 foot cliff into a canyon that was inaccessible from our location. Twenty-four brutal hours later, we entered the canyon from below and stared up at the cliff. My guide declared he couldn’t see the sheep and my hunt was officially over. My time was up. He headed down with our survival gear. I had no other choice but to make the twelve-hour pack out, only to re-supply, sleep and head back into the same canyon. I finally found my sheep at the base of the cliff with a bear standing over it. Armed with only a knife and determination, I screamed and threw rocks. The bear sensed that I wanted the sheep more than he did and finally relented. The next day I made the long pack out with my sheep and some serious satisfaction. Because let’s face it, as a serious bowhunter, you find yourself hunting in some of the most severe conditions, and you need equipment to match your tenacity. The pre-contoured, prestressed design uses Hoyt’s Uniform Stress Distribution technology. As the limb bends, energy is distributed evenly throughout the limb improving efficiency and eliminating “hot spots”, which are found on most solid limbs. The design also harnesses more power producing more speed with lower stress levels. www.hoyt.com *Based on XT 2000 and Cam & 1/2. See back cover for additional limb/cam options and I.B.O. speed configurations. From the start it was obvi obvious we were far from home. A rough plane ride and grueling thirty-mile march in ugly conditions led to spike camp in the Wrangell Mountains. This was my first Alaskan moose hunt and I was determined to overcome the harsh weather. Nine days later, I was having doubts. Temperatures hovered near twenty and my muscles ached from non-stop hiking. My Hoyt seemed frozen in my hands and my eyes were strained from glassing. The next day we spotted a distant bull. The chase was on and I slipped within twenty yards. To get so close and come to full draw on an animal that size was awesome. I’d rehearsed what it would be like but nothing prepares you for the real deal. You have to hope your instincts overpower adrenaline and nerves. Mine did, and that old bruiser crumpled a hundred yards away. Seventeen days in Alaska. Our bodies and bows took a pounding. But that’s why they call it hunting – I didn’t sign up for a cakewalk, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Through it all my Hoyt held tough and in the end, we witnessed one of the most beautiful places God created. Michael Waddell Host Realtree ree Roadtrips As a serious bowhunter, you and your bow take a lot of physical abuse while in the field. When that finally happened after all the miscues and missteps, that boyish interest flamed to a burning passion. All these years later, it’s no different. This obsession has taken me to a variety of states and foreign countries. I’ve seen places and game animals that I only imagined as a boy. There have been adventures and disappointments, yet in every case my passion for bowhunting and the flight of an arrow has been solidly maintained. Hoyt’s introduction of the Cam & 1/2 Performance System in 2003 rocked the archery world. And once again, for the third straight year, more tournament high scores were shot with the Cam & 1/2 System than any other cam system in the world. For 2006, Hoyt introduces another revolutionary breakthrough in Cam & 1/2 Technology with the introduction of Zephyr Cam & 1/2, which combines the blistering performance of the Spiral Cam & 1/2 with the smoothness and accuracy of the original Cam & 1/2 resulting in the ultimate cam system for serious bowhunters! ZEPHYR CAM & 1/2 SYSTEM DRAW LENGTH (IN.) ZEPHYR CAM & 1/2 SYSTEM The Zephyr Cam & 1/2 builds energy quickly while maintaining a moderate time at peak weight making it the perfect blend of Spiral Cam’s extreme speed, with the original Cam & 1/2’s silky smoothness. CAM & 1/2 SYSTEM Hoyt engineers have blended the extreme speed of the Spiral Cam & 1/2, with the easy to draw and smoothness of the Cam & 1/2, to create the all-new Zephyr Cam & 1/2 System. These qualities have been combined with Hoyt’s exclusive new Adjustable Valley Technology, which allows for three different valley options: hard, medium and soft without affecting the let-off. This means you can now get the exact wall you are looking for in a cam that is blistering fast yet silky smooth! (Available in 65% and 80% let-off and ½” draw increments) LAMINATED SPLIT-LIMB PERFORMANCE XT 500 The XT 500 is 12 inches in length and comes standard on the Trykon and Trykon XL. 2. The limb becomes straighter as more load is applied. XT 1000 The XT 1000 is 13 inches in length and available on the PowerTec and VTEC. The XT 2000 is 14 inches in length and available on the ProElite, ProTec, TurboTec, UltraElite and UltraTec. The XT 3000 is 15 1/2 inches in length and available on the ProElite, ProTec, UltraElite and UltraTec. This chart is for cam performance comparison only. The example shown is a 70 lb. bow drawn to 30”. Your individual cam performance will vary. CAM & 1/2 SYSTEM The Cam & 1/2 is loaded. It’s fast, forgiving, accurate, smooth and whisper quiet. It features sealed ball bearings that never require lubrication and maintain ultimate consistency in all-weather conditions. Draw length adjustments are made easily without the use of a bow press and is available in 65% or 75% let-off option. SPIRAL CAM & 1/2 SYSTEM The Spiral Cam & 1/2 is an aggressive cam designed for advanced archers and bowhunters looking for increased arrow speeds. Look at it as the super-charged version of the Cam & 1/2 Performance System. Draw lengths are available in 1/2” increments with an adjustable letoff of 55% to 65%. Ask a dealer if this cam is right for you. 1 4. At full draw, the limb harnesses more power and produces more speed with reduced stress on the limbs. 2 SPIRAL CAM & 1/2 SYSTEM The Wheel & 1/2 features a smooth initial pull and a gradual descent in the back end of the wheel with a larger valley for those shooters who prefer a more “spongy” feel at full draw. 3. The more load (bend), the more energy is stored throughout the entire length of the limb. XT 2000 XT 3000 WHEEL & 1/2 SYSTEM The XT Series limbs are built with Hoyt’s exclusive 5 Layer Lamination Design. The limbs are contoured or pre-stressed and engineered with Uniform Stress Distribution (USD) Technology. So, as the limbs are loaded (bend), energy is distributed evenly over the entire length of the limb eliminating the normal “hot spots” found on traditional solid limbs. 1. Initially, the limb begins as a pre-stressed, contoured limb. The Cam & 1/2 has the perfect blend of speed, forgiveness and an ultra smooth draw. A gradual build up of bow poundage and moderate time at peak weight makes this cam silky smooth and easy to shoot. The aggressive force draw curve of the Spiral Cam & 1/2 builds energy quickly and has a longer duration at peak weight. This is an exceptionally fast cam for the advanced archer. www.hoyt.com XT 4000 The XT 4000 is 17 inches in length and available on the ProTec. 3 4 3/4” SPLIT LIMB TECHNOLOGY Hoyt’s patented 3/4” Split Limb Technology provides for an effective overall width of 2 ¼ inches, creating much more lateral and torsional stability than that of a traditional 1 ½ inch solid limb design. The 3/4” Split Limb design also eliminates the vulnerable v-groove and limb bolt groove or hole where failure most often occurs on traditional solid limbs. 3/4” Split Limbs are lighter, more efficient and provide increased arrow speeds, durability and accuracy. GTX The GTX is 14 inches in length and comes standard on the Selena and LazerTec. TRIAX AND DUAL LOCKING POCKET SYSTEM VERSA CAM & 1/2 SYSTEM WHEEL & 1/2 SYSTEM The Versa Cam & 1/2 provides young archers with proven Cam & 1/2 technology and performance along with 8 full inches of draw length adjustment. So, as they grow, so will their bow. Cam & 1/2 Technology will also help them shoot their best, which means they will be happier and more confident. (Available in 65% let-off) At Hoyt, we engineer something for everyone. The Wheel & 1/2 Performance System is proof. It offers Cam & 1/2 technology for finger shooters and archers preferring an ultra soft wheel. It is available in 1/2” increments and comes with a removable draw stop for a hard wall feel. (Available in 65% let-off) AlphaShox fit strategically between Hoyt’s 3/4” Split Limbs, delivering highly effective vibration dampening and noise elimination. Designed by Hoyt and LimbSaver®, each AlphaShox segment is designed for full-spectrum noise and vibration elimination. AlphaShox offer ten linear inches of durable Navcom™ dampening material contributing to a whisper quiet shot. Hoyt’s Triax Pocket Stabilization System is just one of the many features that set Hoyt bows apart from everything else. Hoyt’s dual locking pockets integrate with the exclusive Triax forks, which are machined directly into the riser. This connection increases contact area between the pivot dowel and riser, ensuring optimal alignment and creating exceptional pocket strength and stability, which are critical to consistency and accuracy. 26 HOYT CUSTOM ACCESSORIES www.hoyt.com RESTS SIGHTS OVERDRAWS QUIVERS GRIPS STABILIZERS My love of bowhunting began when I was six and I let an arrow fly across a football field. I was immediately enamored. Since then, I’ve had the great fortune to visit fifteen countries and hunt over 45 species. I’ve stalked Columbian blacktail deer under a 113 degrees sun in Northern California and endured 45 degrees below zero in the Arctic Circle for Polar Bear. From the dangerous mountains of Kyrgyzstan hunting Marco Polo Sheep to sea level in Argentina, I have been in pursuit of big game bowhunting adventures with my Hoyt. In 1983 I arrowed my first Pope & Young animal – an Alaskan brown bear. That’s when I realized how effective a bow and arrow could be on a large and dangerous animal. Over the years, I’ve added the 28 North American Super Slam species to the Pope & Young record book. In order to accomplish this feat, the last animal required more than 50 days of hunting to finally shoot a 20 14/16” black bear in Arizona. One of my favorite quotes is from Winston Churchill who said, “Success is not final; failure is not fatal, but it is the courage to continue.” That’s the attitude that keeps me going, time and time again.
