The Duke’s Throne is a two-seater. The western side was for Count Palatine of Gorizia, the eastern side for the Duke of Carinthia. The ceremony of the appointment of the Duke was carried out in three parts: the appointment at the Fürstenstein (Prince’s Stone) in Karnburg, the consecration in Maria Saal Cathedral and the homage and feud provision at the Herzogstuhl on the Zollfeld. In 1834, a lance lattice was placed around it. The Herzogstuhl is known as one of the most important symbols of the independence and history of the province. The Fürstenstein (Prince’s Stone) is the oldest legal monument in Carinthia and is made out of an upside down base piece of a Roman-Ionic column from Virunum, the capital of the Roman province of Noricum. In the Middle Ages, the Carinthian coat of arms was chiselled into it. After its long history it can now be viewed in the Coat of Arms Hall in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. The history of the Tonhof is connected to the artist couple Maja and Gerhard Lampersberg, who came into possession of the building in 1954. Thomas Bernhard, Christine Lavant and H. C. Artmann are mentioned as representatives for many Austrian post-war artists who were guests of the Lampersbergs from the mid 1950s. These days, the Tonhof cultural association primarily tries to establish the Tonhof as a cultural meeting place. 15 Municipalities – excursions and attractions Municipalities – excursions and attractions Maria Saal Cathedral is a Gothic gem.
