Now that Kris Kringle and Auld Lang Syne are behind us, it is time to become excited about 2014. At the Detroit Auto Show, January 18 - 26, 2014, there will be exciting news regarding the 2015 Z06. There is loads of speculation just like last year’s introduction to the 2014 Corvette Stingray. I guess we will have to wait until the unveiling of the Z06 to see the actual car and read the specifications. From all the speculation, it appears as though it will be somewhere north of 600 HP? Will it be turboor super-charged? Stay tuned, in a few weeks we will all know! Reading through car websites, I came across an article that caught my eye; this was posted on MotorAuthority.com: Ward’s Auto 10 Best Engines for 2014, with the staff limiting to vehicles costing less than $60,000 and available in the U.S. market. They tested 44 different powertrains and the 6.2(L) ONV V-8 engine in the Corvette Stingray was awarded a top ten engine award. Despite Chevy’s small block pushrod design, this engine features advanced technologies such as direct injection and cylinder deactivation and can get up to 29 mpg on the highway. Very impressive for a large V-8 delivering 455 HP. Page 5 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 21, Iss. 1 | January 2014 Let It Snow (the AACC Holiday Party) Sat., Dec 14 — “Oh the weather outside is frightful. But the fire is so delightful. And since we've no place to go. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” The song may have played inside the Barn House Village Restaurant, but it was almost like a weather forecast for the evening. The afternoon snowfall and threatening overnight forecast kept away nearly a third of the AACC members and their guests...but that didn’t stop the partying!! Those who made the trek through the snow found cold drinks, hot food, and warm hearts inside — and a good time was had by all. There were even plates of home-made cookies on every table which were lovingly prepared and beautifully wrapped by our own “Cookie Auxiliary” group. Following the meal, President Jeff Mohring presented his officers and committee leaders with gifts of thanks. Len Feinberg didn’t miss his chance to present Marty and Laura with what he called the "Laura Miranda Award.” The snow kept most from making a late night of it on the dance floor or at the bar — after all, we are a responsible group. Thanks go out to the event planners, John Kostick and Laura & Marty Hegyi, along with our “Cookie Auxiliary!” Gary & Judy George Jeff Mohring Ike Eisenhart Len Feinberg Tom Schneck & Dennis Corona ImagePhotos by by Len &David Joanne Kimble Feinberg Alison Lileck & Donna Deleon Page 6 Allentown Area Corvette Club ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 21, Iss. 1 | January 2014 Holiday Party Continued... Laura (Carmen) Miranda Get Your Bidding Paddle Ready Sun.-Sun., Jan 12-19 — The Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale will take place over eight days incorporating special events, displays and activities. The auction will feature more than 1,000 collector and special interest automobiles from all years being auctioned off at No Reserve, as well as daily "automobilia" auctions. As always, the auction features a heavy inventory of muscle and collector cars, including our beloved Corvettes. Throughout the eight-day auction, there will be 126 Corvettes or Corvette-powered vehicles crossing the block. 17 are Corvette-powered cars and trucks, the obligatory Corvette boat, a 1964 Fuel Injected 327 engine that comes out of the Floyd Garrett Muscle Car Museum, and the 1963 “Asteriod” Corvette designed by George Barris, which was on display as a Chip’s Choice car at Carlisle in 2013. Speaking of Chip, there are a pair of ‘Vettes on the block from his collection — the most original and unmolested '53 Corvette in ‘63 Barris “Asteroid” existence with under 10,000 original miles and a 2003 with matching VIN (#181). These beauties will be sold as a pair. Visit www.Barrett-Jackson.com for the complicated broadcast schedule on the Fox networks/NatGeo, then grab a drink and some snacks, slide in your La-Z-Boy, and let the bidding begin! ’53/’03 Chip Miller Duo Page 7 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 21, Iss. 1 | January 2014 2015 Z06 www.CorvetteMuseum.com Fri., Dec. 06 – Chevrolet will introduce the 2015 Corvette Z06 next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It will be the most trackcapable Corvette ever, designed to deliver supercar levels of performance through unique powertrain, chassis and aerodynamic features. Corvette outsold its closest competitor, the Porsche 911, for the first 11 months of 2013. This is all the more remarkable given Corvette production was halted for six months as the Bowling Green, Ky., assembly plant prepared to build the 2014 Corvette Stingray. In November, Corvette sales jumped 229 percent year-over-year, as demand for the new Stingray continues to outstrip supply. Corvette Generations John Kirsh (www.CorvetteOnline.com) Fri., Dec. 06 – We know we’ve posted about a Corvette C7 with the R8C Corvette Museum delivery before, but why is this delivery so special? This Laguna Blue C7 Corvette belongs to Mat Juechter, who’s son is Tadge Juechter, Chief Engineer of the C7. “A long time ago, when I was young, he drove Porsches; he doesn’t anymore,” stated Tadge Juechter with a smile on his face. For the past six years, his father has been driving a C6 Corvette as his daily driver, but once Juechter Sr. laid eyes on the Stingray, he had to have one – we don’t blame him. “His interest in mechanics and his interest in invention has been with him since he was eight years old, so it’s no surprise to me that he’s A) a design engineer of cars, and B) very good at it, so I’m very proud of him, as you can probably tell,” explains the elder Juechter. Tadge Juechter’s father also had a personalized license plate made for the car that reads “MYSNSCR.” It’s a really cool plate idea because it’s clever and it gives Juechter Sr. a chance to explain to people why he’s so proud of the car. That’s the part we like most about this video; anyone can own a C7 Corvette, but only Mat Juechter can say that his son was the man who made it happen. How cool is that? Also, Automobile Magazine named the younger Juechter’s Cor- vette Stingray the 2014 Car of the Year and he himself was named 2014 Man of the Year. We know the C7 Corvette is special, but having your father there, showing his support and purchasing one is even more special. Page 8 Allentown Area Corvette Club ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 21, Iss. 1 | January 2014 2014 Callaway Pricing Chris Demoro (CorvetteOnline.com) Tue., Dec 17 — When it comes to Corvette tuners, few names are as well known or revered as Callaway Cars. The Connecticut-based tuner has produced some of the most legendary performance Corvettes on the planet, including the twin-turbo, 250+ MPH “Sledgehammer.” With the all-new 2014 Corvette Stingray arriving at dealerships and in driveways, there are plenty of people eagerly anticipating Callaway’s first performance packages. Well the details are in, and they’re bound to make Corvette enthusiasts happy. Callaway is promising to crank power to 610 ponies and 556 pound-feet of torque thanks to an Eaton supercharger sitting atop the new LT1 engine. That’s nearly as much power as the previous-generation Corvette ZR1, though it was a lot more work than just bolting on a blower. Callaway engineers worked hard to improve the supercharger housing, manifold, and intercooler to increase performance. Callaway also added an integrated underhood heat extractor connecting to a carbon hood surround. As one of the first supercharger packages for the 2014 Corvette, you can bet people will be lined up ready to spend whatever Callaway is asking. The package will set you back $22,995 on top of the cost of a 2014 Corvette. Hennessey’s 200 MPH C7 Chris Demoro (CorvetteOnline.com) Tue., Dec 17 — Everything is biggest in Texas, or so the saying goes, and recently the Lone Star State became the state with the country’s highest legal speed limit, 85 MPH. Of course people are going to push that limit all they can, and so Texas saw fit to install a state-of-the-art toll system that can track cars even at the highest of speeds. Such a system warrants extensive testing though, and despite having taken 1,200 horsepower Cadillac to over 220 MPH earlier this year, Hennessey Performance Engineering was asked to come back and test the toll system again… this time though, with its 2014 Corvette HPE600 . Hennessey was among the first aftermarket shops to get their hands on the 2014 Corvette Stingray, and they wasted no time in adding a host of upgrades to the already-potent Chevy. Among the upgrades are high-flow cylinder heads, long tube headers, a custom HPE camshaft, and of course new tuning software to take advantage of the added performance potential. Getting the Texas Highway Patrol to shut down part of the new, 85 MPH section of the Guard Parkway toll road was the next step. This gave John Hennessey himself ample room to get the 2014 Corvette up to speed, though a small nitrous kit was used to help the ‘Vette get over the 200 mile an hour hump. Sure, it seems like it might be a questionable use of taxpayer funding, shutting down the road for a private stunt like this – but you won’t hear us complaining. We are pleased to announce the slate of inductees for 2014! Jerry Burton served as Founding Editor and Editorial Director of Corvette Quarterly magazine; Motorsports Editor for AutoWeek and editor and contributor to numerous other automotive publications. As a historian, he authored "Zora Arkus-Duntov: The Legend Behind Corvette," and "Corvette: America's Sports Car: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow." He is the author of the award-winning "Heartbeat of America" themeline for Chevrolet and served as a Member of the NCM's Board of Directors. John Heinricy's likeness is a permanent fixture of the Museum as a statue with the 1989 Corvette ZR-1 "Record Run" display, an exhibit that pays homage to the team that set 12 international world time/distance speed records averaging as high as 175mph over a 24-hour period. He has won 11 SCCA national championships driving a Corvette and as Corvette Assistant Chief Engineer was responsible for the C4 through 1996, including the 1995 Pace Car, 1996 Grand Sport and Collector's Edition. Dave MacDonald was a rising star on the race scene, trading driving duties with Dick Thompson in the "Biography of a Sports Car" national ad campaign for the 1963 Stingray and recognized as one of the top two Corvette drivers by Zora Duntov. As a driver during the glory days of Corvette Racing, MacDonald had a better win percentage than any other Corvette racer with 47 victories and 69 top three finishes in 110 career starts. Unfortunately General Motors pulled out of the factory-supported racing, and MacDonald went to drive professionally for Cobra - but he continued to drive his beloved 1963 Stingray personally. Though he finised 10th at the Daytona 500, his life was cut short at the Indy 500. Read more about each of our inductees online. Join us for our Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Thursday, August 28 during the Museum's 20th Anniversary Celebration.
