A Beautiful Season Awaits
“Oh, the days dwindle down
to a precious few
September, November”
The famous “September Song” always invokes special memories
pat renaud
in us of the wonderful summer just past and the beautiful season
of fall awaiting us.
In the spirit of the seasonal change we look to improve our track record of
accomplishments as we move forward throughout this year.
This year, in cooperation with Worcester County, we will address our bridges for
immediate repairs and possible replacements. We will also deliver an overview for
maintenance and drainage work to be done. We will collect the information needed
to develop comprehensive IT plans to be
implemented in the following year. The issue of the

Manager for follow-up. Anxiously, we await the
results of the Reserve Study to blend it in with our
CIP and Comprehensive Plan results to plan for the present and future of OPA.
As you can see, we have a plateful of issues that need to be addressed in the coming
year, and I hope that I can report positive progress on each of them as the year
progresses.
Finally, I would like to thank all of our unnamed volunteers who serve in many
capacities on our advisory committees throughout the year. Without their efforts our
job as Directors would not be done very well. And to all of you reading this report who
are not volunteering your precious time, please get on board to help make Ocean Pines
a better community.

As the summer season comes to a close and the fall season
begins, it is always interesting to look back at the success we
had over the summer. I also can’t help but be excited for what’s
in store for the fall. I would like to share highlights of both with
you.
Bob Thompson
First, I would like to send a big THANK YOU to Sharyn
O’Hare and Marty Clarke, our outgoing Board Members.
Their attention to detail and diverse approach to issues will be missed. Sharyn’s
background in real estate, specifically Ocean Pines, and her willingness to volunteer and
participate in many of our activities make her an invaluable resource to the Association.
Her assistance with the Emergency Operations Center during Hurricane Sandy, the
Jersey Shore relief effort and the transition to the new Yacht Club are just some
examples of her pure dedication to this community. Mr. Clarke’s persistence and unique
perspective on issues often led to vigorous debate and out-of-the-box thinking on
matters facing our Association. Much more can be said about these two volunteers who
each have spent countless hours at Board meetings, one-on-one time with many of you,
reading through paperwork and somehow trying to manage their own lives, all while
working so hard for you. Their time,
dedication and effort on behalf of all of us
are appreciated.
YACHT CLUB
The Yacht Club had its largest net
operating profit for the summer months in
the history of our organization. Not only are
more people using the facility, our new
management team is taking great pride in
making things better at the club, including
managing the expenses. Year-to-date
performance reflects profits of $209,004, which is an improvement of $138,425 over
this time last year. Our banquet/events have been extremely successful and our a la carte
business did very well. In addition, we are very excited that The Clubs of Ocean Pines
has received a “BEST OF 2015” award, being voted by readers of The Metropolitan
Magazine as the “Best Wedding and Banquet Facility Berlin to Ocean City.”
This fall we have modified our schedule from 7 days a week to 4. We will be open
Thursday through Sunday and closed Monday through Wednesday for regular dining.
The team has many special events planned to keep our customers engaged this season
such as “Corked” wine pairings, pub trivia nights, “Char” steakhouse dinners, paint
nites, a Bryan Clark performance and our annual Thanksgiving buffet, seated dinner
and take-out feast just to name a few. We are still very excited with the progress we
have been able to make and the success we had this summer. We have no plans to stop
pushing forward as there is still a lot to be accomplished.
AQUATICS
Another amenity showing significant improvement is Aquatics. Our revenues
continue to exceed budget and expenses are below what is budgeted. The department
has realized a year-to-date $92,796 improvement over last year’s number for the same
time period. Swim lessons and fitness classes continue to thrive, daily user fees are ahead
of budget, and our new snack bar at the Swim and Racquet Club exceeded our revenue
expectations for its first season. Another outstanding fact that I want to point out is the
additional visits to our pools. From Memorial Day to September 20, (continued pg. 6)

THE GENERAL LEDGER: treaSUrer’S repOrt
Our Community’s First Quarter Report
This newsletter contains the standard
summary financial report of the OPA.
But what do all these numbers mean? At
a high level, the OPA is virtually on
target. The OPA is $35,000 better than
expectations (budget). With a total
planned budget net for this period of
$4,530,000, the actual results are within
tom terry
1% of budget expectations. The actual
overall operating performance of all major segments is well within
the acceptable range.
While the amenities are always a focus of attention, there also
are various operating departments, which provide much needed
services, and their financial performance is also critical to the
overall success of the organization. The Public Works
Department is performing to budget and is slightly ahead by
$2,118, or within 1% of budget. Likewise, Police is ahead of
budget by $5,911, or within 1% of budget. Recreation and Parks
is slightly behind budget by $2,467, but is still within 3% of
budget. These and other departments, which represent a major
portion of our assessments, are financially functioning well and
are on the target organizational budgets.
The “amenities group” net operations are ahead of budget by
$70,000, or 6%. While looking at the expected budget
performance is a critical step in reviewing results, it is not the
only means of evaluating performance. Actual net operations and
year-to-year comparisons can also provide an evaluative view of
performance results.
Aquatics is leading the way with a performance $52,750 ahead
of budget for the quarter. This is a net operations surplus (profit)
of a $196,958 for the quarter. It is also $98,158 ahead of last year’s
performance.
The Yacht Club, which is always a focus of interest, has
achieved financial results for the 1st quarter well ahead of the
prior year. While net operations surplus was $34,258 below
budget, its results of $149,127 were $125,205 ahead of last year’s
performance. Personnel costs were 18% less than last year, while
revenues have increased 4%; a noteworthy achievement.
Golf is $28,949 below budget with a net operating surplus of
$93,513 for the quarter. However, this also is $36,333 ahead of
last year’s performance.
The Marinas are also doing well with a performance $31,598
ahead of budget and a net operating surplus of $190,800. This is
$42,716 ahead of last year.
All the amenities, in the aggregate, had a quarterly net
operational surplus performance, which was not only better than
budget by $70,000, but $296,580 better than last year’s
performance. This is very encouraging and sets the stage for an
even better performance than last year’s $177,000 net operational
surplus for the amenity group.
So, while the “amenity group” is performing very well overall,
and ahead of last year’s positive performance, attention will still
need to be paid to those segments which are short of expectations.
Actions underway, as I write this article, include the Budget and
Finance Committee working on its proposed recommendations
for inclusion in the Board’s yearly guidance it provides to the GM
for the overall budget development process. The investment
policy of the OPA is in review to assure the OPA has a clear
direction in its investments in today’s world, while protecting the
initial base of investment dollars. Finally, the reserve study
commissioned by the Board is beginning its effort to provide the
OPA with a clearer picture of its true levels of required reserves
to meet current and future needs.

(cont’d from page 3) our pools have seen a significant increase in
use. In 2013, we had 68,169 visits to our pools, 2014 we had
79,162 visits, in 2015 we had an 88,359 visits to our pools. We
have realized an increase of over 20,000 additional visits to our
pools over the last two years. The Aquatics Department has
really been stepping it up and it shows!
PUBLIC WORKS
Public Works continues to work hard at keeping our
community in great shape and our facilities maintained. I want
to take the opportunity to highlight the activity by the drainage
crew and new equipment we purchased this season. This crew’s
primary duty assignment is to focus on our storm water system
here in our community. They work each and every day to keep
the ditches, swales and drainage pipes clear of debris. The new
equipment we purchased to keep our drainage pipes open and
flowing is working well. Recent weather events have certainly put
their summer work to the test. I am happy to report their efforts
have paid off. The water flowed as intended and unfortunate
flooding that has previously occurred was very limited. We were
able to address the pipes that did back up during the weather
event much quicker than we previously could. This led to much
more favorable outcomes for everyone. The two biggest
challenges we faced were
tidal flooding due to the
tidal surge and fallen
trees due to the wet
conditions and high
winds. The Public Works
team worked late into the
night and very early in
the morning to cut up
and remove trees that
had fallen across our
roadways. As a waterfront community, we have large parts
affected by tidal flow. The surge brought more water in and was
very slow at letting it back out. During those times the drainage
ditches held the water as there was no place for it to go out to.
Once the tides cycled the water went out as intended.
Leaves have started falling, which means it is soon time for
the leaf collection program to begin. Remember, Republic
Services will pick up 4 bags of leaves with each regular weekly

OTHER AMENITIES
Other areas finishing the summer strong include the Marinas,
Beach Club Parking and the Beach Club. All these amenities
ended ahead of budget through the month of August. Also worth
noting that our Recreation and Parks Department team had
another phenomenal year with our summer camp program, which
added to the strong bottom line performance of the Association.

trash pickup. We will have crews running the leaf vacuum for
the swales and ditches along with the crew picking up bagged
leaves in each section on the opposite days Republic Service is
operating. Bagged leaves must be in paper bags in order for our
crew to pick them up. Since the price of disposal is more than
double if they are in plastic bags, we will not pick up plastic bags.
The Public Works yard will be open for leaves and yard debris
Monday through Saturdays November 16 through December 18
for residents. Please use paper bags. If you prefer to use plastic
bags, you will need to dump them out and take the plastic bags
with you. Please do not leave anything stacked outside the gate.
This is a practice for some over the last few years and it creates
unnecessary work that slows down the team. Please be courteous
and follow the rules as it truly does impact all of us. Check out
the article later in this issue for dates and times the collection
program will run and when the yard will be open. Thank you in
advance for your cooperation.
NOR’EASTER RECAP
During the most recent
nor’easter storm over the first
weekend in October, Ocean
Pines had a total of 2.8”
rainfall over several days, 6
trees across or on the roads,
no drainage complaints and
some tidal flooding which
was the biggest issue.
PROJECTS
As the fall is upon us, keep
your eyes out for upcoming
projects. One of our projects
will be at the Manklin
Meadows Racquet Complex where we are in the
final stages of the process to begin construction of 8 pickleball
courts and 4 platform tennis courts. In addition, we will be
moving the playground closer to the Community Gardens to
accommodate the spacing and parking needs the expansion will
require. We will take advantage of this move and will be making
repairs to the playground equipment.
Another project on the horizon is bridge work. We are taking
a proactive, parallel approach to repairing and/or replacing two
of the four bridges in Ocean Pines. One of the two is on Ocean
Parkway near the Borderlinks section and the other is on
Clubhouse Drive leading to our golf course and Country Club.
We are working with the County and State to address the
immediate needs as well as development of a longer-term strategy
for bridge replacement. Our strategy for replacement will include
timing, design and funding.

As usual we are moving forward on a lot of
different fronts. With an Association of our

going on. While we are only one-third of the way through our
fiscal year, I am very pleased with all the work the OPA team has
accomplished so far. If you want to be more informed about

hesitate to share your input, ask
questions or provide feedback on
areas here in our community.

Official OPA-Approved
House Number Signs for Safety
The Ocean Pines Fire Department and the Ocean Pines Police
Department would like to encourage homeowners to purchase
official Ocean Pines Association-approved house number signs.
For many years, the Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines-Ocean
City has been the maker, seller and repainter of the
OPA-approved house number
signs. These signs are considered a
real safety assistance for emergency
service providers, allowing the fire
department and police department
to easily find the correct house
when responding to a call for help.
To get one of these signs or to have
an existing sign repainted, visit the
Ocean Pines Administration
Building and look to the left inside
of the entrance. You will find a
display with the order forms. The
cost of a sign is $15 and includes
installation at the house, out front at the street for best visibility.
Repainting, when the signs become faded, is done at the house
for $10, and is completed in the official OPA-approved brown
with orange numbers.
Blood Pressure Checks
As an important service to our
community, the Ocean Pines
Volunteer Fire Department
continues to offer complimentary
blood pressure checks on the first
Wednesdays from 10:00am to 11:00am in the lobby of the
Community Center. Please understand that when an emergency
situation arises within the community, the OPVFD is obligated
to respond. You can always go to the OPVFD South Station at
any other time for a blood pressure check.

Ocean Pines Officer Receives
“Superintendent’s Salute” for Saving a Life
Ocean Pines Patrolman First Class James D. Minton was
presented the Maryland State Police’s “Superintendent’s Salute”
for his actions on October 26, 2014. It was reported Troopers of
the Maryland State Police Berlin
“V” Barrack were dispatched to an
Ocean Pines residence for a suicidal
subject. Upon arriving, Ocean Pines
Patrolman First Class Minton met
Trooper Andrew Broadwater and
attempted to contact the suicidal
subject at the residence. After no
response, both Broadwater and
Minton made entrance to the
residence only to find the victim
hanging from an attic rafter.
Patrolman First Class Minton and
Trooper Broadwater
released the subject and administered CPR
until the victim began to breathe. Minton
and Broadwater continued with lifesaving
efforts, along with other arriving Troopers,
until emergency medical services arrived and
assumed medical care. The swift actions taken
by Patrolman First Class Minton and Trooper
Broadwater saved the victim’s life. The
certificate was presented to Patrolman First Class
Minton at the Maryland State Police, Berlin “V”
Barrack by Assistant Barrack Commander, First
Sergeant Christopher Davala, accompanied by Ocean
Pines Chief of Police, David Massey. Patrolman First Class
Minton is commended for his outstanding contributions to the
citizens of Maryland and the Maryland State Police.
Neighborhood Watch Crime Bulletin #56
Heroin Addiction: The problem of heroin addiction is a national
problem. Every community now faces the consequences of cheap
heroin, and the resulting pain and suffering caused by this most
serious and dangerous addiction. Police and emergency medical
workers are now responding to overdose cases, which all too often
result in accidental death. Our community is not immune to this
problem as a recent overdose death in our community indicates.
There are other criminal consequences of this addiction. Addicts,
in desperation, often resort to criminal activity to raise money for
a fix. They may break into a residence to steal jewelry or other
goods to sell. Recently, we arrested a 17-year-old who had
burglarized several residences. He was a heroin addict with a
substantial habit. Our State government has formed a task force
to analyze and address the growing problem of heroin addiction.
The OP Police Department has applied for a federal grant to
fund an additional police officer position, which shall enable us
to place an officer in the county-wide Criminal Enforcement
Team (CET). This unit, under the direction of our Sheriff, is
specifically addressing narcotics trafficking. We work closely with
this unit, but having our own officer in the unit will provide an
additional level of enforcement in Ocean Pines.
UBER DRIVER ASSAULT: A 25-year-old Pocomoke man was charged
with Second Degree Assault after assaulting an Uber taxi driver
in Ocean Pines.
JET SkI THEfT ARREST: While on patrol, an officer noticed
suspicious activity at an OP residence. Two individuals were
hooking up a trailer carrying 2 jet skis in the early morning hours.
Upon seeing the officer, the suspects attempted to flee the scene,
towing the stolen jet skis. A high-speed pursuit into Delaware
then occurred, with the suspects apprehended in Delaware. The
jet skis were recovered and the owners notified. The 2 suspects
are awaiting charges in Delaware and then face extradition to
Maryland. Evidence obtained through Search and Seizure
warrants in this case resulted in several other case clearances,
including another stolen jet ski in Wicomico County. It is
believed the suspects may have a heroin addiction.
DRUNk DRIVING ARRESTS: 6
DOmESTIC ASSAULT ARRESTS: 2
PHONE & INTERNET SCAmS: Below are recent
phone scams our residents have reported to us.
The best advice is NEVER to give sensitive
information over the phone, unless you have
INITIATED the call, to a trusted site.
Improved Credit Card Scam: In this scam, the
criminal states that he/she is from the credit card
company and can give you an improved or lower
rate. Once they get your credit card information,
they empty your account. Family Hostage Scam: The
victim receives a call saying a family member (usually a
grandchild) is being held hostage or under arrest and
needs bail or hostage release money. Money is then wired to
the scammer, usually out of country. Computer Money Gram Scam:
The victim answers an email that promises to make him/her
money through an investment. A fake check is sent the victim,
who cashes the check then wires the money to the website in the
hope of making a profit. The check then bounces at the victim’s
bank. Internal Revenue Scam: A call, allegedly from the IRS,
demands payment of “back taxes.” Money is then wired to
scammers, who vanish. Craigslist Scam: Victim advertises an item
on Craigslist, and responds to a potential “buyer” who sends a
bogus PayPal confirmation of payment. The victim then sends
the item to the scammer, without payment.
SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY: When you suspect suspicious activity, please
call the police! There are times, after a crime has occurred, when
a neighborhood check reveals a resident who saw the suspect, but
being unsure of what was happening, failed to call the police. We
often hear, “I didn’t want to bother the police” or “I didn’t want
to get involved!” It is the job of your police department to
investigate suspicious activity. There are times when it turns out
that the individual we investigate was not committing a crime,
but all too often there was criminal activity afoot. If you wish to
call us, but remain anonymous, we will accept the call. Your
phone call could be the difference in solving a serious crime.

Retiring Old Glory – flag Retirement Ceremony
at Worcester County Veterans memorial
Saturday, November 14 at 2pm
When the United States flag (Old Glory) becomes worn, torn,
faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and
the old flag should be “retired” with all the dignity and respect
befitting our nation’s flag. The traditional method of retirement
is to incinerate the flag, but this does not mean that one should
simply drop the entire flag (intact) into a fire. Bring your old flags
to be retired or drop them off at the Ocean Pines Community
Center any time and our flagmasters will take care of it. You can
drop off flags year-round at the Ocean Pines Community Center
Front Desk.

“I Think That I Shall Never See...”
The Environment and Natural Assets Advisory Committee
has spent considerable time and effort in acquiring grants,
soliciting volunteers and actually planting native trees in the
community. Results of our efforts can be seen at the South Pond,
the North Pond and the Swim and Racquet Club. At the same
time it seems that homeowners are removing trees in increasing
numbers. Now that the Pines community is nearly 50
years old it is understandable that some of these trees
have exceeded their healthy life span and others have
suffered from disease and development. We hope that
homeowners, having gone through the process of
getting OP approval to remove the trees and ensuring
that they are not violating utilities’ rights-of-way, will
replace the discarded trees with native trees. Trees are
crucial to our air and water quality and they enhance
our visual spaces.
• Landscaping, especially with trees, can increase property
values as much as 20%.
• One acre of forest absorbs 6 tons of carbon dioxide and
produces 4 tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the
annual needs of 18 people. (USDA Forest Service)
• For every 10,000 miles driven in a vehicle that gets 20 mpg
plant 15 trees to offset the CO2 production.
• Tree loss has a financial cost. Tree loss in the Baltimore-
Washington region since 1973 has resulted in a 19% increase
in stormwater runoff (540 million cubic feet) at a cost of
$1.08 billion. (American Forests)
• Trees improve water quality, resulting in less runoff and
erosion. This allows for more recharging of the ground water
supply.
• Wooded areas help prevent the transport of sediment and
chemicals into streams. (USDA Forest Service)
• Trees provide shade for us and food for wildlife.
Because of its location, Maryland is a common
meeting ground for several species from both
northern and southern climates. It is generally
recognized that over 160 native or naturalized
tree species can be found in Maryland, so it’s not
difficult to find trees suitable for your site. A list of
these trees and their descriptions
can be found on the md.gov
website. Just type Maryland native
trees in the search box.
With so many reasons to plant
and so many species to choose from,
we should have no problem with
tree replacement. Select, plant, feed
and water and watch it grow!

Junior Golf Programs End Successful Season
Ocean Pines Golf & Country Club is wrapping up the golf
season having had more junior golfers participate in its programs
than in any other season in recent history. Approximately 120
young golfers participated in the course’s clinics and summer
camps. These numbers represent a marked change in
participation. Three years ago, the junior golf program here was
practically nonexistent. The camps have proven especially
popular. This past summer, we offered 4 separate camps, 2 of
which had waiting lists. Head Golf Pro Malinowski said, “The
professional staff tried to show
kids how much fun it can be to
play a difficult game. We offered
games and contests and tried to
get them on the course to play as
much as possible during the
week. The dedication and
attitudes of the staff have really
helped to grow the program.” Participants are also eager to return
to the course after the programs are over. “It’s been fun to see a
shift in the usage of the practice facilities at the golf course after
the camps. The kids are coming back to practice and sometimes
play with their parents. I feel like they get a sense that they belong
here and that’s good for the growth of the game and securing the
future of golf,” Malinowski said. Ocean Pines Golf & Country
Club offers special junior golf memberships and Malinowski gives
private junior lessons at discounted rates.

match Play Golfer of the Year
The Ocean Pines Men’s Golf
Association recently completed its
Match Play Tournament with Jim Phipps crowned Match Play
Golfer of the Year. Play began in early May and concluded this
month after ten rounds of double elimination play.
Each player started play in the “Upper” bracket and moved to
the “Lower” bracket upon losing their first match. Those in the
“Lower” bracket suffering a second loss were then out of the
competition. After 6 rounds of play, Richard Dalton was the only
golfer to remain undefeated in the “Upper” Bracket while Bob
Long, Jim Phipps, Neil White, and Mike Bahr were still alive in
the “Lower” Bracket with one loss each. In the seventh round,
Phipps beat Long on the first extra hole while Neil White
eliminated Mike Bahr.
In round eight, Phipps beat White for the second time to gain
the opportunity to face the undefeated Richard Dalton; becoming
champion would require dealing Dalton two consecutive defeats
which Phipps was able to do in rounds nine and ten.
At the conclusion of this season-long event, Tournament
Manager Woody Gross presented the top five contestants with
vintage trophies; match play winner Jim Phipps received a nearly
new golf ball-filled Sorta crystal vase; runner up Richard Dalton
was presented with a solid gold-colored bowl; third place winner
Neil White won a solid gold-colored plate and fourth place
winners, Bob Long and Mike Bahr, each received a new attaboy.
Nostrovia! Another Success
for Our Popular Bavarian Hops match
The tenth annual Bavarian Hops was held Friday,
September 11 with a full field of 72 players. As in the past several
years, the charities for this event were Diakonia and the
Worcester County Humane Society. Although it rained hard
Thursday, making it cart-path-only, Friday night was a
perfect fall evening. The “seventh-hole party” held for people who
do not wish to play, was bigger than ever. Frank Ruggiere won
the closest to the pin on seven and won the right to wear the
“Bavarian Hops Hat.” Jim and Connie Phipps were the only
“skins” winners this year. Ernie Stiles, chairperson and founder
of this fabulous event, wishes to thank all who helped out, all who
donated door prizes and the Yacht Club for a wonderful dinner
following golf. Donations to the 2 charities totaled $2905. Thank
you to everyone who donated
to the charities. A special
thanks to Judi Galuardi of
Berlin Interventional Pain
Management who donated
$1000. She and Dr. Galuardi
are always generous, donating
thousands over the years.

Need Your Help
“As you may or may not know, my wife Caryn had some
serious health issues in 2010. A small infection on her toe led to
MRSA and seemingly overnight went to sepsis and septic shock.
During her long treatment period I was told several times that
Caryn wouldn’t last to the morning, but being the fighter she is
Caryn pulled through. It took several months of hospitalization,
great care by some very dedicated and skilled people and the
grace of God. However, Caryn has been suffering one lasting
health issue. During the bout of septic shock many organs shut
down, including her kidneys, it’s been her kidneys that have failed
to fully come back. Although Caryn is not on dialysis at this
point, we and her doctors know it is only a matter of time before
she goes on dialysis and needs a kidney transplant. And that is
the reason for this mailing. A live organ donor would give Caryn
the best chance for true survival for the longest time. If you, a
family member, or a friend would be interested in further
information, do not hesitate to get in touch. I can answer most
questions. For those more difficult questions, I can be touch with
our transplant team and get you answers very quickly. Most
importantly, please share this message. I would have donated
myself but because of my diabetes I have been eliminated as a
possible donor. Caryn and I would like see this message travel
around to thousands of people. Remember, location isn’t
important if someone wants to donate. We can overcome any
obstacles. Thank you for reading this. Please get in touch with
me (Arie Klapholz): 410.208.0362, [email protected].”

Sam Wilkinson Volunteer of the Year Award for 2015
is mr. frank Creamer
Frank grew up in Maryland’s Montgomery County on the
Western shore. He and his wife Dee raised their kids and worked
there for thirty years. Going to the beach was always their
destination in the summer and somehow Frank knew they would
end up here. In 1999, they discovered Ocean Pines and bought a
weekend getaway house. It did not take them long to figure out
which side of the bridge they wanted to be on. In 2005,
everything fell into place and Frank and Dee moved to Ocean
Pines permanently, and never looked back.
In Ocean Pines, Frank discovered what we had to offer, was
just what he was looking for. He joined the OP Tennis Club, the
OP Platform Tennis Club, and
OP Ping Pong Club and became
co-founder of the OP Pickleball
Club.
Frank introduced himself to
Sonya Bounds, Director of
Recreation & Parks and the
Recreation Staff. Once he saw
what they did he knew he
wanted to help! With his
outgoing personality and smile-inducing laughter, Frank became
a very popular volunteer. He began teaching pickleball clinics and
giving free lessons to help build up the growing racquet presence
in Ocean Pines. Frank has also volunteered as a costume contest
judge at the Fall Halloween Festival, helped with the Ocean Pines
Hometown Christmas and volunteered to help hide hundreds of
Easter eggs at the Spring Festival. In addition to volunteering at
the Recreation Department, Frank also enjoys helping with some
of the maintenance and upkeep at the Manklin Creek Racquet
Center. And, in his “spare time,” Frank has also served on several
Ocean Pines Advisory Committees.
Frank says, “Helping is just his way of giving back to this great
community which has given him and his wife a wonderful place
to live and lots of great friends.”
For all that he has done for the Recreation & Parks
Department and for Ocean Pines, Frank Creamer has been
awarded the 2015 Sam Wilkinson Volunteer of the Year Award!

Lots of work on July 11 for a very gratifying turnout to raise
funds for the Youth of the
Community.
After cleaning up and
resetting for Bingo Night, the
doors again opened at 5pm and
the sold-out event was under
way. Pictured is Kiwanian J.

Donate Your Used Eye Glasses & Hearing Aids
A major ongoing project of the Ocean City Lions Club is the
collection of eye glasses that are sent to distribution centers,
which are then passed on to third-world countries. The yellow
drop box is located in White Horse Park across from the
Community Center. Other great programs the Lions Club help
fund include the SDHS Field House,
Leader Dogs for the Blind, Diakonia,
Worcester Developmental Center, Coastal
Hospice, OC Play it Safe, OC Police
Trauma Bear, the OC/Berlin Leo Club
based at SDHS and many more. Also, each
year the club gives 3 SDHS graduating
seniors a scholarship and 3 AGH nursing
students a scholarship. Visit them at

more NASA Trips Announced
The Ocean Pines Recreation Department is very excited to
offer more trips to the NASA Wallops Flight Facility planned
for October 20, November 19 and December 9. These have
become very popular trips that continue to sell out. Where we
tour depends on what the facility is working on at the time of
our visit. So you could have a different trip each time you go.
Wallops Flight Facility is NASA’s primary facility for suborbital
missions. The facility launches sounding rockets, scientific
balloons and performs aircraft research. On these tours, you get
to see these activities up close. Steve Habeger, our tour
companion, has a plethora of knowledge about Wallops due to
his previous work on the base. He can answer your many
questions regarding the activities that take place on base & on
the island. Upon arrival at Wallops, we will pick up an escort,
along with Steve, who will take us on a tour of the facility. We
will make several stops during the day, leaving enough time for
lunch at the cafeteria. Trip cost is $35 per person, not including
the cost of lunch. The bus departs from the Community Center
at 9am and the tour starts at approximately 10am. Lunch on site
at noon and we return to Ocean Pines around 4pm. Stop by or
call the Recreation Department at 410.641.7052 to be placed on
the waiting list for the month of your choice.

kite Day Soaring to New Heights
Big Truck Day A Roaring Good Time
This 5th annual event drew a big turnout and brought fire trucks,
dump trucks, tractors, tow trucks, tractor trailers and other big trucks
for kids to see, touch and sit in. Local police officers, firefighters
and big truck drivers were on hand to interact with kids.
A great family fun day event!
We enjoyed kite-making, kite displays and more
at the 4th annual Kite Day on August 15 at the
Veterans Memorial Park. Children and adults built
kites and then tested their creations. Local kite
enthusiasts also displayed their own creative kites.
Golf, Beer, a Coveted Giant Hat & Laughter
Much fun was had by all at our popular Bavarian Hops
Golf Match on September 11, with proceeds
and donations to benefit two local great non-profits.

Ceremony Held at Remembrance Court
Platform Tennis Celebrates Autumn
Ocean Pines Platform Tennis celebrated the coming of
Autumn on Saturday, September 12. The courts were packed
with players from early morning until noon. Fortunately, the
heavy rain held off until noon. Over 40 people attended the event.
Following the games, everyone enjoyed a barbeque and getting
together. Free lessons and a free trial period are available to
anyone who is interested in trying out platform tennis. Lessons
are given every Saturday at noon at the courts located in the
Manklin Meadows Racquet Center. Sneakers are necessary and
a racquet and balls will be available. For more info, contact Jim
Freeman at 215.704.4592 or [email protected].
On September 27, a remembrance was held for all the tennis
and platform tennis members who have passed away. It was a
beautiful ceremony. The remembrance opened with Thomas Lee
reading a poem written for and dedicated to those who played
the sport. The names of all who played were named and honored.
The chorus members sung a lovely rendition of “All Through
the Night,” followed up by Jim Holland playing the taps.
Remembrance Court was designed in 2005 when a committee
wanted a garden where racquet sports players could be
remembered. The garden is divided into decades with plaques
installed in the 1980’s, 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s. When planning
the garden, the committee decided upon plaques which allowed
them to honor every member equally and to preserve a clean and
simple look of the garden. There are 68 plaques at this time.
Through the generosity of the racquet members, there have been
enough donations to pay for the garden. The committee members
who volunteer their time for this project include: Chairperson
Linda Lee, Public Works Ed Wells, Nancy Beste, Kristen Laun,
Marie Stenger, Betty Thompson and Audrey Wahl.
