17.1.1. Easy wear and care styles of nightwear
CLOTHING
17.1 Nightwear
Nightwear can easily catch fire if
accidentally set alight by contact with a
naked flame, gas or electric fire or other
heat source. Children and older or
disabled people may be particularly at
risk of serious injury. Consequently,
various measures have been taken to
control the fire performance of the
fabrics used in nightwear and to make
the public more aware of the dangers.
The law states that adults' nightwear
and garments commonly worn as
nightwear must carry a permanent label
showing whether or not they meet the
flammability standard. Children's
nightdresses and dressing gowns which
must meet the flammability performance
requirements do not need to carry a
label. However, suppliers may choose to
confirm compliance.
Adult nightwear which meets the
flammability performance requirements
must carry a label bearing one of the
following: 'Low flammability to BS: 5722'
in black letters; or 'Low flammability to
BS: 5722' in black letters and 'Keep
away from fire' in red letters.
Nightwear which does not meet the
flammability performance requirements
must carry a label with the words 'Keep
away from fire' in red letters.
Nightwear which has been treated with
flame retardant chemicals must carry
the appropriate warning label about
washing and suitability of the washing
agent.

available in the shops and usually have

button right up the front and can be put
on like a coat, or they have four or five

knee length.

as an insulator, or more accurately by
enabling air to act as an insulator. A
garment traps air between it and the
skin. This is then warmed by body heat
and effectively prevents further heat
loss.
To be really warm, the whole body
needs to be insulated. While warm
hands and feet may be the key to feeling
comfortable, body warmth is actually
achieved by keeping the trunk and limbs
well covered. Thermal clothing is
available from good outdoor, camping
and sports shops and catalogues.

17.18.5. Button hooks, zip
pullers and zip extenders
Button hooks are useful for those
lacking fine finger dexterity, or who only
have the use of one hand. A button hook
consists of a thick handle and a hook, or
two crossed wires.
Button hooks with a hook are pushed
through the buttonhole and looped over
the button, then pulled back through the
buttonhole with a slight twist, holding
on to the button. Crossed wire style or
latchet button hooks are used in the
same way, but the latchet clicks into
place round the button.
Button hooks need quite a lot of
practice, particularly when using them
with one hand. However, it helps if the
edges of the garment can be held
steady, and if the buttonhole is on the
person's relatively more able side.
