A Transformative Meeting
We’ve all sat through meetings that
are pedestrian and even pointless.
Today, I want to tell you about
a transformative meeting, where
community builders challenged
PBS Hawaii to think bigger and aim
higher – and were willing to back up
Leslie Wilcox
their challenge with support.
PBS Hawaii
The meeting started off with
President and CEO
business as usual. Alongside Robert
Pennybacker, executive producer of our HIKI NO
education project and weekly TV show, I made a pitch
for continued funding. On the other side of the table:
Joyce Stupski of the Stupski Family Fund of the Hawai‘i
Community Foundation, and Kelvin Taketa, President
and CEO of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. Both
were early HIKI NO
supporters.
“HIKI NO
Robert and I were

Mrs. Stupski politely

report and I believe
school day.”
in this program – you
don’t need to convince
Kelvin Taketa
me,” she said. “However,
President and CEO
Hawai‘i Community Foundation
I see a very lean budget
for a statewide program
with more than 80 schools. That concerns me.”
Mr. Taketa noted that HIKI NO doesn’t cost school
participants a dime, but it is tough on their time.
Teachers spend vacations and weekends getting trained
in this New Literacy of digital media. Meanwhile, their
often-overscheduled students work on HIKI NO stories
after school and on weekends.
School teams find and research a story in their
community, and write, shoot, edit and produce a video
using critical thinking, fairness and oral and written
communications. Students must also meet national
(adult) PBS journalism standards. That involves more
time in learning by re-doing and refining.
“HIKI NO belongs in the schools, not outside the
school day,” Mr. Taketa said.
Robert and I were quiet, plunged into thought.
Could PBS Hawaii retain the independence and realworld deadlines of HIKI NO if it were embedded in
state schools? And how could we afford the required
curriculum development in alignment with new
Common Core State Standards to make the case to the
Hawaii State Department of Education?
- executive producer Robert Pennybacker shares on-location
HIKI NO
production techniques with students from Lanai School
Mrs. Stupski, a former special-education teacher in San
Francisco, said, “Come back with a three-year proposal
to make this happen. Don’t undercut yourself. Tell me
what it will really cost.”
As Robert says, “It was a turning point.”
I’m pleased to share with you the result: The
Stupski Family Fund of the Hawai‘i Community
Foundation has awarded a three-year, $2.1 million
grant to grow HIKI NO into the vision of being an
elective class for middle and high schoolers across the
state.
We also found out that Hawaii DOE superintendent
Kathryn Matayoshi is a fan of this plan and will support
PBS Hawaii’s HIKI NO elective.
When Joyce Stupski and Kelvin Taketa challenged
HIKI NO to be more, they set the table for many more
HIKI NO students. This strengthens learning and workforce development.
And that’s the story of a transformative meeting of
the minds, reverberating into the future for HIKI NO
and for the benefit of schools and work places.
With gratitude,

A THREE-EPISODE SPECIAL EDITION
The topics for all HIKI NŌ stories are chosen by the students who create
them, which results in a very diverse range of subjects. However, certain
story themes seem to recur, and in the month of August, PBS Hawaii will
present compilation specials that focus on three recurring themes:
• HiKi NŌ: Focus On The arts – august 7 | 7:30 pm
• HiKi NŌ: Focus On The Environment – august 14 | 7:30 pm
• HiKi NŌ: Focus On Local Businesses – august 21 | 7:30 pm
The stories compiled in these specials are drawn from the entire HIKI NŌ
show archive, dating back to the premiere episode from February 2011.
All three specials are hosted by Shisa Kahaunaele, a 2014 HIKI NŌ
graduate from Kamehameha Schools Kapalama. Shisa is working
toward a career in broadcast journalism.

sentencing a teenager to life without parole
serve our society well? The United States is
the only country in the world that routinely
condemns children to die in prison. This
is the story of one of those children, now
a young man, seeking a second chance in
Florida. At age 15, Kenneth Young received
four consecutive life sentences for a series of
armed robberies. Imprisoned for more than
a decade, he believed he would die behind
bars. Now a U.S. Supreme Court decision
could set him free.

Jim Burns: A Local Boy If you call Jim
Burns a haole he would likely take offense.
His father, John A. Burns, always thought
of himself as a local boy. Jim, who grew
up in Kailua and easily breaks into Pidgin
English, sees himself the same way. As Jim
was growing up, he saw the respect that
his father had for Hawaii immigrants, and
learned that being a local boy was more than
just about speaking Pidgin.

through tragedy and bad financial decisions,
falls hard with failure. In contrast to the
wildly successful Twain, Clemens is an inept
businessman who squanders his fortunes on
pipe dream patents and bad investments.
Clemens turns to the lecture circuit and
tours extensively, leaving behind his beloved
Hartford home and, often, his family, to pay
off his creditors. (e)

AUGUST PLEDGE HIGHLIGHTS
Being Poirot
Sunday, August 10, 7:00 pm
After 25 years of playing the iconic
detective, David Suchet attempts
to unravel the mysterious appeal of
Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and
reveals what it has been like playing
one of fiction’s most enduring and
enigmatic creations. Suchet returns
to Christie’s summer home in Devon
and travels to Belgium, where he
attempts to find Poirot’s roots and
discover what the Belgians think
of one of their most famous sons.
As Suchet delves into Poirot’s
background, we also get a behindthe-scenes look as he comes to the
end of portraying Poirot with the
upcoming Curtain, the detective’s
final case.
Jimmy Van Heusen:
Swingin’ with Frank & Bing
Wednesday, August 13, 8:00 pm
Award-winning composer Jimmy
Van Heusen wrote high-flying songs
for his legendary pals, including

Angie Dickinson, Shirley MacLaine,
John Pizzarelli and others share
their memories of this fun-loving
romantic and fearless adventurer
who was a test pilot for Lockheed
during World War II.

There is no mistaking the distinctive
voice and music of Jerry Santos, nor
his connection with the memories
and emotions of our own lives. In
this Na Mele special, Santos shares
the meaning of “home” and what
it means to connect not only with
people, but with the special places
dear to our hearts.

10:00 POV A World Not Ours This is a
passionate, bittersweet account of one
family’s multi-generational experience
living as permanent refugees. Now a
Danish resident, director Mahdi Fleifel
grew up in the Ain el-Helweh refugee
camp in southern Lebanon, established
in 1948 as a temporary refuge for exiled
Palestinians. Today, the camp houses
70,000 people and is the hometown
of generations. While the filmmaker’s
childhood memories are surprisingly
warm and humorous, his yearly visits
reveal the increasing desperation of
family and friends who remain trapped in
psychological as well as political limbo.

7:00 SECRETS OF HER MAJESTY’S SECRET
SERVICE Her Majesty’s Secret Service,
or MI6 as it is known, is the world’s most
legendary spy agency, thanks to the James
Bond stories. Set up in 1909 as the Secret
Service Bureau, the existence of MI6 was not
formally acknowledged until 1994 – which
goes a long way toward understanding the
modus operandi of this government agency.
With unprecedented access to some of the
key players in British espionage, this film
lifts the veil on the shadowy world of spying,
going back in time and behind the scenes to
look at some the world’s most calculated and
delicately executed operations.
