MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
W
elcome to Spring! With spring time comes new things and new things continue to happen in Loyalist
Township. Here are a few items of interest on the calendar for this year.
1. The new park located at the southwest end of Amherst Dr. (Loyalist Park), will become an attractive landmark for this area. The work is in progress and we look forward to the next phase of development in 2015. It
will be an attractive addition to the many green spaces in the Township, for everyone to enjoy.
2. Recognition of the largest concentration of historic dry stone walls in Canada will take place this year on
Amherst Island. The Dry Stone Walling Association of Canada will hold its annual festival on the Island with a
focus on the connection between Ireland and Canada, noting the remarkable quality of stone fences built by
Irish immigrants close to 200 years ago. A time capsule will be placed in one of the structures to be built by
expert dry stone wallers from Ireland and Canada.
3. The Economic Growth Strategy Plan for the Township has now been completed by the Economic Development Committee
in conjunction with the consultant. It is now time to implement that plan, so during the 2015 municipal budget, Council will
decide the extent to which the plan will be implemented this year.
4. With the addition of the new Leisure Centre last year, new recreation programs are on the rise. The continued high volume of
residential growth in the Township is indicative of the number of young families moving into the area who can enjoy the many
programs being offered.
All of us on Council, including our newest member, Ron Gordon, feel honoured to serve the residents of Loyalist Township and
we will make every effort to implement and to fulfill the suggestions and ideas brought forward during the October 2014
election.

DIRECTOR’ MESSAGE
S
pring has sprung with the publication of our new Spring/Summer Recreation Guide. I
encourage all of you to browse our exciting inventory of programs and services as staff
strive to provide and continually improve recreational opportunities for our residents.
With the opening of the new Leisure & Activity Centre in Amherstview last fall, we are now able
to offer a wider array of programs and camps for different ages, interests, and skill levels. Take
advantage of the many opportunities the Recreation Services Department offers at any one of
our facilities to either learn something new or continue with the programs and activities you are
already enjoying, like swimming and summer hockey. If you prefer the great outdoors, simply
take a walk or go cycling to recharge your batteries in one of our beautiful parks.
Whatever you do or whatever your interests may be, I encourage everyone to practise a happy,
healthy, and active lifestyle.

“I had the experience of attending the Weights for Women class in the fall of 2014 and I thoroughly
enjoyed it. The instructor(s) were knowledgeable and made the class a lot of fun. On the nice days we
were even able to take it outside – how refreshing! It was a great workout and even though I attended
only some of the classes, I felt the difference. I would recommend this class to anyone at any level of
physical activity as there is something for everyone! Thanks for providing such a fun class!”

CHILDREN’S SWIMMING LESSONS
CHILDRENS SWIM LESSONS
What to Expect from Lessons
Swimming lessons follow progressive evaluations and recognize that everyone learns at a different pace. Talk about
lessons with your child. Have a realistic expectation so your
child does not feel pressured to ‘pass’ a level or get a badge.
Focus on ‘completing’ the skills at a comfortable pace.
Level Assessment
The Red Cross Learn to Swim program allows students to
progress comfortably and have tailored programs for the
different age groups. If your child is 3-5 years of age, they
should register into the Red Cross “Pre-school” . If your child
is 6 or older they should register in one of the “Swim Kids”
levels.
If you are unsure of the level that your child should enter
into, please arrange for child to be screened by contacting
the Pool Program Coordinator at (613) 389-3648 ext. 202.
Lesson Cancellations
Classes are subject to change or cancellation with insufficient registration. Swim classes are not scheduled for: Sunday, May 17th
Monday, May 18th
Parent’s Week and Report Cards
One class each session is set aside for you to talk with our
Water Safety Instructors about your child’s progress during
the last few minutes of class.
If your child is away on the last day of lessons, you can pick
up the report cards at the main office of the W.J. Henderson
Recreation Centre after the end of the session during regular office hours.
Private Swimming Lessons
Private and semi private lessons are a half hour in length
scheduled in accordance with our children’s lesson schedule. Please call our main office to inquiry about registration (613-389-3648 ext. 0).
AQUATICS
Spring:
Private: $196.00 for 9 lessons
Semi Private: $126.00 per student for 9 lessons
