Karting Challenge
“Series to offer wide array of 2-cycle and 4-cycle classes”
After several years running a successful series as the Northern Ontario
Karting Championship (NOKC), series officials have reorganized
as the Canadian Karting Challenge. Concentrating on TaG and CIK
classes for 2014, the series will no longer be a Rotax qualifier and will
instead offer a wide array of 2-cycle and 4-cycle classes. Continuing
to focus on the racers, the Canadian Karting Challenge will offer
great competition, a fun and friendly atmosphere and a host of
amazing prizes.
Always supporting the shifter racing categories, the Canadian
Karting Challenge will offer Senior 125cc as the headline class in
2014. The class champion will be awarded a sponsored three-day
racing school at Skip Barber. Looking to rebuild the excitement in
the shifter categories, the series is expecting high numbers in this
headline class.
Other 2-cycle classes to be offered include Junior 125cc Shifter,
Senior TaG/Rotax, Junior TaG/Rotax, TaG 60cc Cadet and TaG 80cc
Master. TaG classes will follow current Florida Winter Tour/CIK rules.
4-cycle classes include Junior Honda Lite, Junior Honda and Briggs,
Senior Honda and Briggs, and Master Honda and Briggs.
All Senior 2-cycle and 4-cycle competitors will be vying for a series
sponsored funded ride to the SKUSA SuperNationals, which will be
awarded to one driver. One driver in the Junior 2-cycle and 4-cycle
categories will also win a series sponsored ride to the SuperNationals,
which take place each November in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The series schedule is already set for 2014, and will kick off May
31-June 1 for Round #1 at Innisfil Indy. Round #2 will return to
Innisfil Indy June 21-June 22 with the always-exciting Shannonville
Motorsport Park playing host for Round #3 July 11-13. Round #4 is
to be announced, but a street race in Hamilton is in the works. The
final two rounds will take place back at Innisfil Indy, with Round #5
August 9-10 and Round #6 September 20-21.

Stephen says he’s always been interested in
automobiles and racing while growing up,
and that he had a very special interest in
snowmobiles. He says it was snowmobiling
that allowed him to cross paths with
Dominic Labrecque, the president of PSL.
In the early days of the business, they used
to work on snowmobile engines as well,
but now they are 100% karting. When asked about the biggest change at
the FWT he’s seen over the years Stephan
mentioned the increase in international
participation. Stephan can lay claim to
some of the credit for that trend. PSL has
worked hard to find driving talent from all
over the world to bring to North America
and the Florida Winter Tour. But, they
don’t just bring in drivers; they also scour
the world for the best tuners and race
engineers. The 14 staff working under
Stephan at this weekend’s FWT event in
Ocala have come from as far away as South
Africa, Holland and Italy.
This, for Stephan, is just another step

exercised his option as the pole sitter to
bring the field to the start at an unusually
slow pace. If it was a bit of strategy he was
playing it didn’t work as Derek Wang got
a great jump when the lights went out
to lead into turn one. Wang was able to
hold the lead for a handful of laps before
Schiavo again asserted himself into the
lead. Behind Wang, now in second, was a
three-way battle between Carlos Medina
(Mexico), Andreas Fonseca Grajales (Costa

Around the midway point of the race,
Medina caught Wang and the two had a
ferocious battle for second trading station

better of Wang to take the second spot
on the podium behind Schiavo who had
a 5.457 second advantage by the time the
checkers flew.

After setting the fastest time in qualifying, Lachlan DeFrancesco

Canadian Matthew Latifi alongside him. Starting fourth was Harry
Coulton (USA) who would go on to win the 14-lap pre-final by
0.155 of a second over Latifi.
The start of the Mini MAX final saw Harry Coulton use his starting
advantage to take the lead going through the ultra-fast turn one.
Michael d’Orlando (USA) also got a great start to slot into second
on Coulton’s bumper while defending FWT Mini MAX champion
Nick Brueckner (USA) moved into third.
As the race wore on, Coulton maintained a lead of about three to
four kart-lengths over d’Orlando while Michael had a similar gap to
Matthew Latifi in third. With two laps to go, d’Orlando made his bid
for the lead but Coulton held him off. On the last lap he tried again
and this time he was able to get by for the lead. As they crossed
the line d’Orlando secured another win by 0.130 of a second over
Coulton while Saturday’s winner Matthew Latifi was another 0.233

After winning six out of his first seven finals of the 2014 Florida
Winter Tour season, dominating MAX Masters qualifying and taking
a close win in the pre-final over Scott Falcone (USA) and Raul P.
Costa (USA), it seemed that nothing could stand in the way of
Venezuelan Luis Schiavo grabbing win number seven under the
beautiful azure skies in Ocala. Of course things don’t always go as
planned and from the start of the race it was obvious Schiavo was
in trouble. As the pack of karts accelerated towards turn one Luis’ kart just
never really got going and he pulled out of the line and fell way
back in the pack. Going down the front straight his motor sounded
as if it had ingested a small rodent as it stubbornly refused to pick
up and run. Up front, Costa and Falcone were locked in a great
battle for Masters supremacy when a red flag came out for an
incident in turn one. During the red flag period, Luis Schiavo tried to diagnose his
motor’s issue as best he could without touching his kart. As such,
while the other drivers were seated in their karts waiting for the
race to restart, Luis lounged on the track next to his chassis looking
a lot more relaxed than he must have been. In the end the problem
turned out to be a broken spark plug which could not be fixed on
track.
When the race did restart, Costa and Falcone resumed their battle
with Brian McHattie keeping them within striking distance. At one
point, Costa looked like he might break away, but Scott Falcone
is not one to give up when he smells victory and the determined
racer from Colorado fought his way back to the lead, eventually
taking a win by 0.873 of a second over Costa. Brian McHattie would
round out the podium 3.2 seconds behind Costa. During the
podium celebrations, we were again treated to Scott Falcone as
“Captain America” when he again proudly displayed the Stars and

Matheus Morgatto (Brazil) would emerge
victorious in the 14-lap Micro MAX prefinal.
At the start of the final, Morgatto would
assume the lead while Jo Nuñez (USA),

By lap six, Gold had found his way up to

Try as he might, Gold could not get around

The last race before the lunch break
was the pre-final for the Rotax Senior
MAX competitors. Ocala Gran Prix’s Kyle
Kirkwood (USA) would start from pole but
it was Jordon Lennox (United Kingdom)
taking the win to be the man setting the
pace in the final. As the last race in the queue the Senior
MAX final would be the last race of the
day and those who waited for it were not
disappointed. Oliver Askew (USA) timed
his start perfectly as the lights went out
and the entire outside row went with
him as Lennox and the inside row hung
back. Behind Askew Kirkwood slotted into
second but lost that position a few laps
later and fell back in the field.
This left Luke Varley (United Kingdom) and
Dan Roeper (USA) to challenge Askew for
the lead while Jordon Lennox had worked
back to fourth. Although he had been set
back a few places Kyle Kirkwood never
gave up and began his march back up
through the field. He would eventually
get back to a fight for second. On the last
lap, Kirkwood was knocking on the back
door of Lennox and the two led a charge to
the line in a four-wide-pack that included
Varley, Thomas Issa (Jamaica) and Zach
Claman DeMelo (Canada). Kirkwood and Lennox crossed the line as
one in what looked like a dead heat.
However, the electronic scoring system
showed Kirkwood to be ahead by 0.003
of a second, or roughly three inches. It
was Oliver Askew’s third FWT Senior MAX
win of the year and as of this writing he
looks very solid in his bid to compete in his
fourth straight Rotax MAX Challenge Grand
Finals.

TALKING TO: JORDAN ROBERTSON
INDOOR
OUTDOOR
TO
GoRacing Magazine had
the opportunity recently
to sit down with 2013 IKF
Region 7 Grand National
Champion, Jordan
Robertson and find how
he has transitioned from
indoor karting to where
he is today.
What made you get started in karting and come to K1 Speed in the first place?
It actually just started out having fun with my Dad one afternoon to blow off some steam after
finishing up some chores. We went into K1 Speed had a great time, started coming back more
often and it progressed into joining their Race League Program and having great success with
the indoor karting program.
How old were you when you came to K1 Speed, and how old are you now?
I was around thirteen years old, when I first raced at K1 Speed. I am nineteen years old now.
What was the point when you decided to make the switch from indoor karting to
outdoor?
I had been participating in the indoor Race League for a couple of years and progressively
getting better and better and was winning races consistently. We were at a car show and met
Motul, they suggested if I was interested in karting outdoors, I should talk to Jerry Henderson of
Henderson Karting Experience, who was also attending the auto show.
How was your 1st outdoor experience? Did you do any training with Jerry?
My first outdoor experience was training with Jerry Henderson. It was a completely different
experience. As compared to an indoor kart, I had to get use to throttle response, braking points,
in addition to learning the line. Comparing that with indoor karting was an eye-opener, not to
mention the increased power underneath you.
Were you overwhelmed by the differences or were you able to adapt to those
changes.
I will admit, at first I was a little overwhelmed, but after a couple of sessions I got used to how the
kart handled and the difference in power.
How long did you practice before you did your first race?
We did maybe three or four lessons with Jerry before I participated in my first race at the Apex
track in Perris, CA running in the Spec PRD class.
GO Racing Magazine
33
TALKING TO: JORDAN ROBERTSON
L to R - Jerry Henderson,
Mike Manning, Jordan
Robertson
How old were you when you participated in your first Spec PRD
race and what was your result?
By this time I was 16 years old. That first race I entered at Apex in the
Spec PRD class, I won!
So you had been winning races at the indoor karting centers,
you finish first in your first outdoor kart race, where do you
progress from there?
I continued racing at Apex every month, I then started participating in
races at LAKC, they had a pilot program going for new up and coming
drivers, I thought this program would be a great opportunity for me as
a karter and we started participating consistently with LAKC as well.
Where you running your own equipment/kart are running with
a team?
34
GO Racing Magazine
We did not run with a team, we had our own kart and equipment.
At times there can be a big difference in regards to the amount
of participants between running at Apex versus running with
LAKC; how did the larger fields of participants compare to what
you were used to?
It was definitely a new experience going from 10 racers to a field of 20
to 30+ drivers, but having Jerry at the track with us made it a lot better.
Getting in track time prior to an event was also crucial in helping me
prepare for a race.
So Jerry continued being your driver coach?
Yes, he has been a tremendous asset in my outdoor karting success.
When did you do your 1st full season of karting?
Our first full season was in 2010, I ran an Avante chassis in the Spec
PRD class.
How has your family been in accepting your racing adventure
and the added expensive outdoor karting brings with it?
Everyone really enjoys it, my Dad loves spending time at the track
every week; my Mom gets a bit more nervous, she worries about the
speeds and the possibility of a wreck.
Can you tell us some of the different tracks you have raced at
and what different series you participated in?
Some of the tracks include Cal Speed in Fontana, Apex in Perris,
Adams, Button Willow, Willow Springs, and Santa Maria all in
California. I have also raced in Phoenix. The series I have or are
currently running in are IKF Region 7, LAKC, Pacific Association of
Karters at Apex, Pro-Kart series and So-Cal sprinters.
Tell us a little about last year and your championship?
Last year we ran the IKF Region 7 series where I was able to win the
2013 Grand National Championship along with LAKC. LAKC proved
to be the harder on us as we experienced more problems than we were
used to both mechanically and some driver related.
When you look back now as an IKF Region 7 Grand National
Champion to where you began in the indoor karting center,
what do you think you have learned the most and what would
you say to people that have experienced indoor karting and
want to take their karting outdoors?
I would say it takes a lot of time and patience. It isn’t something you
just show up for and drive and expect you can win right away. There
is a much higher level of competition, some competitors have been
doing this for years, and they won’t take too kindly to someone just
showing up and beating them, so they will try their hardest to keep
you from being faster than them. I would just say, keep on training, get
a driver coach, and put in the practice.
What did you learn the most, from then to now that has
contributed to your success? What stands out the most?
Having Jerry Henderson as a driver coach was a tremendous asset.
He instilled confidence in me, and reminded me that I have an
opportunity to win just as much as anyone else.
Going back to those indoor karters wanting to make the move
to outdoor karting, what would you recommend their first step
be? Many indoor karters might not know what to do or what
the next step is to get involved in the different outdoor series
available to them, what would you advise those karters as to
what the next step is?
I would suggest attending an outdoor event, talk to the people that
are involved in the outdoor racing, ask them questions. Talk to people
at the track, some people have programs where you can rent the karts
and equipment and try it out.
I see you have a shirt on with your sponsors on them? How
were you able to go out and capture sponsors?
We were able to capture some of our sponsors thru Jerry Henderson
and the connections he had, some of the other sponsors we
approached and had to show them previous results and successes I
had as a driver before they would offer sponsorship.
What are your future plans for 2014 and beyond?
Our plans for the 2014 season is to still run with LAKC and to hopefully
participate in some Pro-Kart races in the hopes of attending the Super
Nat’s this year.
Any aspirations to move out of karting and into auto racing?
Definitely, through the IKF Region 7 series this past season we were
able to win a school with Skip Barber and I am looking forward to
taking advantage of that along with doing some auto racing and see
where that goes.
Are there any of your sponsors you would like to mention or
thank?
Yes, definitely; I want to give a shout out to K1 Race Gear, AMR
GO
Graphics, HKE, Motul and Courtney
Concepts to thank all of them for
their continued support.

went wire-to-wire in the Final, pulling out
to a six-second advantage. Callum Smith
was a new face among the top drivers,
and drove his way to the second position
in the final lap. He was removed from the
results following post-tech inspection,
promoting Christian Brooks to second and
Junior rookie Sting Ray Robb to third. Kyle
Wick finished fourth, while Phillippe Denes
drove to fifth.
Brooks turned things up early on Sunday,
as the Round 2 winner secured the fast
time in qualifying. Versteeg fought back
in the heat race, taking over the top spot
from Brooks to earn a two-second win.
Like the Sunday feature in Tucson, the
main event was punctuated by an incident
involving two primary players. Both Brooks
and Versteeg took their turn at the point,
before they were joined by a charging
Sting Ray Robb. Versteeg and Robb fought
for the lead on lap 17, and the two locked
wheels, sending them both off the track.
This allowed Brooks to inherit the lead,
with Denes trailing. Denes led on the final
lap, before Brooks went deep in turn 11 to
steal the lead. Junior rookie Jeff Fulham
trailed the lead group for much of the race,
and attempted to slide past Brooks for the
win, but it was not enough. Brooks held on
for his second victory of the season, while
Fulham recorded his best series finish, one
spot ahead of Denes. Wick was fourth,
while Versteeg fought back to fifth.

COTA ROUND TWO
Energy Corse America DD2 / CRG-USA
DD2 Masters
Championship leader Gavin Reichlet began
where he left off in Tucson, at the point, as
he swept the opening round in Phoenix.
The New York driver secured the pole
position in qualifying, turning that into
a two-second advantage in the Prefinal.
As in the opening rounds, the action was
heated early on in the main event, as
Sabre Cook challenged for the lead. She
led early on, relegating Reichelt to second.
He responded by taking over the position
on lap five. The two, joined by Christian
Bird, ran nose-to-tail for the remainder of
the race, with Reichelt earning his third
straight victory. Bronson Eggert was fourth,
with Matt England fifth.
Reichelt came back the following day to
up-end Cook in qualifying once again for
five crucial championship points. Contact,
however, shuffled up the field early on in
the Prefinal, with Cook able to escape with
the lead and the win. Reichelt recovered
to second, as did Bird in third. Action
heated up in the Final, with Cook and Bird
exchanging the lead several times, before
Reichelt began making his way forward.
With two laps remaining, Reichelt tried
for a move past Bird for the lead, but it
backfired, allowing Cook to slide through.
She then drafted past Bird for the lead.
Reichelt tried to follow, but failed, with the
two making contact. This allowed Phoenix
driver Bailey Murphy to inherit the second
spot, as Cook drove to her first DD2 victory
in Challenge history. Murphy was removed
from the results in technical inspection,
promoting Bronson Eggert into the second
spot, as Reichelt was classified third.
England ended up fourth, with Lee placing
fifth after Bird retired following the contact.
Defending DD2 Masters champion Alan
Rudolph extended his series win streak
from last year to nine, sweeping the two
rounds at his home track in Phoenix.
Rudolph ran unchallenged for the entire
weekend, setting up for a championship
weekend in Sonoma, and a third straight
trip to the Rotax Grand Finals as part

the two main events in Sonoma (both
drivers must cross the finish line).
A large portion of that bounty is the
entire weekend entry fee ($1050) to the
Sonoma rounds, which will be returned

extended his point lead following a sweep
in the action on Saturday. Durbin secured
the pole position by a mere six hundredths
of a second over last year’s PKRA winner
Ken Maxfield. The two went back and
forth throughout the 17-lap Prefinal, with
Durbin holding off a late challenge from
Maxfield for the win. The two-man show
continued in the Final, as Maxfield paced
the 2013 Masters Max champion. Taking
over the lead on lap 17, Durbin drove away
to his second series win on the series, as
Maxfield held on for second. Justin Peck
held off Larry Hayashigawa for the final
podium position, as Fisher crossed the line
in fifth. Both Hayashigawa and Fisher were
removed from the results for carburetion
infractions, moving Jacob Zamora and
Steve Wiener into the top-five.
Maxfield stepped up his game on Sunday,
coming away with the fast lap in qualifying
for the pole position. He cleared the field
by two tenths of a second, with Brian
Phillipsen coming on late to the second
spot, dropping Peck and Fisher down the
order, with point’s leader Durbin in fifth.
Durbin fought his way forward, reaching
Maxfield by the halfway point. After taking
over the lead, the polesitter fought back,
and secured the lead to the checkered flag.
Durbin finished second, but was moved
to the tail of the grid for the Final due to a
clutch infraction. Contact in the opening
corner shuffled up the field, with Maxfield
and Phillipsen breaking away. Maxfield
paced the field until Phillipsen took over
the top spot on lap 16. From there, the
California driver led the remainder of
the race for his first Challenge victory.
Maxfield kept it close in second, with Fisher
earning his first podium finish in the series.
Durbin recovered to finish fourth, with
Hayashigawa in fifth.

COTA ROUND TWO
BBR Karting Mini Max:
Jacob Blue Hudson added to his Challenge
win total for 2014, earning both feature
victories in Phoenix. Round 2 winner Dylan
Tavella was the top qualifier, as Hudson
posted the second quickest lap of the
session. Hudson held off a charging Payton
Durrant for the win in the Prefinal, setting
up for another exciting feature. After a five
driver fight, Hudson and Tavella locked up
to pull away for a duel to the finish. Hudson
held off Tavella to the stripe, recording his
second win of the season. Canadian Griffin
Dowler trailed in third, recording his first
podium of the season.

Black Flag Racing Micro Max:
Jak Crawford put himself in position to
clinch the Challenge championship early
in the Sonoma weekend, besting the field
in both feature races. Crawford fought his
way from a poor qualifying run outside the
top-15, and into fourth during the Prefinal.
Working his way into the lead before the
halfway point, Crawford drove to a threesecond advantage for the win. Top qualifier
Sebastian Davis was second, with Prefinal
winner Max Wright in third.
