As St. Luke tells us, “[God] is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive." (Lk 20:38) Those in heaven are called saints, whether they were canonized or not. However, the church canonizes certain individuals who lived lives of heroic faith and charity. The saints are models of holiness for us to imitate, but even more, they intercede for us before God to guide and strengthen us on our journey until we, too, reach heaven. Last Friday, St. Joseph Radio host Rick Howick gave us a wonderful presentation on our patron saint, Edward the Confessor. As we focus on being a House of Prayer, let us strengthen our bond of friendship with the saints by learning about them, imitating them, and praying for their intercession. All Souls Day (or Día de Los Muertos) commemorates the souls of the faithful departed who are assured of heaven, but are being purified from their sins in purgatory. “The Church in its pilgrim members from the very earliest days of the Christian religion has honored with great respect the memory of the dead; and 'because it is a holy and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins' she offers her suffrages for them."(cf. 2 Macc 12:45) Our prayer for them is capable not only of helping them, but also of making their intercession for us effective. (Catechism #958) As a House of Prayer, let us foster our bond of friendship with all of the departed, particularly our family members and parishioners. Please consider coming to our We Remember Mass this Saturday, November 7th, at 10 a.m. as we pray for the deceased of our parish and their families. 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 FAITH FORMATION On-going Religious Education and Spiritual Growth for Everyone, ALL THE TIME! The gifts we find for special events, holidays, or to brighten our own homes are an exchange of caring with impoverished communities in developing countries. This year we have many new crafts from Bangladesh, El Salvador Guatemala and Mexico. Inspired by nature, these beautifully handcrafted textiles, ceramics and wood products, honor indigenous traditions, and were selected to be reminders that when a Concern America product is purchased we are providing a source of income to materially poor communities; promoting human scale endeavors; ecofriendly work patterns; and fair working conditions. Concern America is an international development and refugee aid organization based in Santa Ana, CA. (714) 953-8575. All Souls Day, November 2 Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) From pre Columbian times, El Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead has been celebrated in Mexico, and other Latin countries. This is a very special ritual, since it is the day in which the living remember their departed relatives. Sometimes, when people of other cultures hear for the first time about the celebration of the Day of the Dead, they mistakenly think it must be gruesome, terrifying, scary, ugly and sad. Nothing is further from the truth, Day of the Dead is a beautiful ritual in which people happily and lovingly remember their loved relatives that have died. Much like when we go to a graveyard to leave some lovely flowers on a tomb of a relative. YOU ARE INVITED TO LEAVE THE NAMES OF YOUR DECEASED FAMILY MEMBERS AND LOVED ONES WRITEN ON ONE OF THE PAPER STARS LOCATED ON THE ALTAR OF THE DEAD.
