我的中国梦
MY CHINESE DREAM
Aniela Alisha S. Dizon
BSEd. English and Chinese Language Teaching Student
Angeles University Foundation
I
t all started with Hana Kimi, a Taiwanese
soap opera that was the sensation sometime
in 2008. As a second year high school
student at that time, I was delighted to
watch this TV series even if I could not
yet understand a word in Mandarin. I had to
depend solely on the sub-titles.
However, as I got immersed in the series, the
sound of the words became familiar. And then
I learned from my mother who is a faculty
member of the University, that two Basic
Mandarin classes, for free, will be held from
February to March of that year.

With my interest in learning the foreign language
becoming stronger, I asked my mom how to go
about joining the class and took the path that
brought me closer to learning Mandarin.
My initial experience learning the language was
thoroughly enjoyable. My mom was my partner
in most of our oral exercises and I could say that
it was a novelty learning something together
with a parent.
Modesty aside, I did better than my mom since
Mandarin is heavily dependent on tones. I
remember she would always mispronounce
words and no matter how I tried pronouncing
them properly for her, she cannot discriminate
between tones. I guess since I was a lot younger,
I had keener ears. Also, having more senior
classmates - teachers, doctors, businessmen who were as eager as I was to learn this language
added to the excitement in our class.
When I graduated from high school, I decided
to pursue a course in Education primarily to
be able to join the Chinese Language Teaching
class. The first few months were difficult but
I had an advantage considering that I have
already completed a Basic Mandarin course.

Our teachers were very patient with us. And so when
it was time to go to Fujian Normal University in
Fujian Province in the People’s Republic of China for
our cultural immersion, my batch mates and I were
not totally anxious since we could already engage in
simple conversations that will help us find our way
around in a foreign country and be able to speak to
the locals there.
The ten months we stayed in China was a wonderful
experience. There we met people from different
parts of the world and our common bond was our
enthusiasm and keen interest in honing our speaking,
reading, writing, and listening skills in Mandarin. We
also got involved in activities like calligraphy, paper
cutting, and making Chinese knots. And then we
were given a chance to display our talents when we
performed in various programs and participated in
sports events.
Of course we were also able to explore the place
and visited parks, museums, and other places of
significance in Fuzhou. On a personal note, my skills
in using chopsticks got better. I would say that our
stay there provided a holistic experience which truly
influenced us to take learning the Chinese language
more seriously with a lot of patience, diligence, and
passion.
When we returned to the University, learning the
language still went on. After attending our regular
classes, we had to attend to our Chinese classes.
Truly, without dedication and sincere desire to learn,
one would quit because on top of our very heavy
academic load, we still have to attend to various
programs and activities related to learning Chinese
language and culture.
Part of the

participants to tour

But all these efforts paid off because on May 20,
2014, I was declared Champion in Chinese Bridge:
Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College
Students in the Philippines held in U.P. Bahay Alumni.
The competition, sponsored by the Embassy of the
People’s Republic of China in the Republic of the
Philippines, was held to select the Philippine delegate

Competition for Foreign College Students. For the first time, a
Filipino joined in the prestigious competition and I felt very honored
and privileged that that first Filipino was me. I am truly thankful
to our Chinese teachers for patiently teaching us and for giving us
their full support in the endeavor. Of course, we are also grateful to
the Chinese and Filipino Directors of the Confucius Institute at the
Angeles University Foundation for providing us with the resources
to compete successfully.
And so on July 2, 2014, I set for Beijing, People’s Republic of China.
I traveled back to this great country, this time all alone. It was
my first time to travel outside the country without a companion.
harmony can be achieved despite differences in color and language.
The competition proper was held in Changsha, Hunan Province.
The activities we had to undertake include a 100-item examination
which was conducted on-line, a talent competition and a speaking
competition. For my talent, I sang the Chinese song Zhang Da
Hou Wo Jiu Cheng Le Ni (I Became Like You When I Grew Up).
Although I did not make it to the final round I was very certain that
I did not embarrass myself in front of the judges and the audience.
In Asia, there were 32 participants and only the top eight moved
to the semi-finals. But I had no regrets. When I first heard the
Thankfully, I survived the trip. Armed with my ability
to speak Mandarin, courage to brave the world, and
the determination to proudly represent my country, I
arrived in Beijing and met some of the delegates of the
prestigious competition. I felt right at home because
we were warmly received by the organizers of the
competition.
We had a few days touring the place,
meeting the rest of the participants,
getting briefed for the competition by
the great men and women of Hanban,
and practicing for our speeches and
talents. It was an overwhelming
experience. I was awed by the sight
of the Great Wall of China. Oh how
people back home envied me when
I posted a selfie picture in facebook
when we toured the place! I got a lot
of comments from my family and
friends saying they wanted to visit the
historic place as well.
We were 126 delegates from 87
countries and we were grouped into
five continents – Asia, Oceania,
Europe, The Americas, and Africa.
We had to don our native costumes
for pictorials. I felt like a celebrity
where our every move was captured
on video and camera. It was also
thrilling to know that the competition
was broadcast nationally in China.
But what was most significant to
me was the good company of the
different delegates who were very
friendly and easy to talk with. I later
found myself singing their songs,
dancing their dances, and learning a
bit of their language. I also took the
opportunity to tell them about our
culture. We exchanged souvenirs and
we took a lot of pictures together.
We were a microcosm, a small
world demonstrating that peace and

other delegates converse in Mandarin, I had
a feeling that I will not make it to the semifinals but that did not deter me to give my
best. I had a firm resolve that the Philippine
delegate will not go home a sore loser but
rather a winner in her own right.
What I discovered later was that people
back home – family, friends, classmates,
schoolmates, administrators, teachers, and
employees – took time to vote for me in the
Network Popularity Award. My classmates
took the liberty to distribute flyers so that
others would know of the voting system and
take part.
There were those who used the social
networking sites to spread the word. At
the end of the voting period, I landed 4th
in Asia. I felt truly loved by everyone for
showing me their support.
The most significant for me with all the
experience I gathered when I was in China
was the friendship that I have found. I felt
so blessed having met all these wonderful
people who came from different countries
and treated me like their own sister.
I did not feel left out or discriminated upon.
They were so warm, friendly, open, and eager
to learn from each other. I am convinced that
the title of the competition is truly apt with
the use of the word “bridge.” Indeed, our
common bond, the Chinese language, helped
overcome the cultural barriers. The language
served as our link to better understand our
similarities and differences.
Of course, when I came back, I was instantly
famous in my University. Everybody was
asking how the competition went. I told
them I did not make it to the final round but
most were quick to say that by representing
our country I was already a winner or that
being able to travel is already a prize in itself.
Those comments really put a smile on my
face and made my heart swell.
And so a little more than a month later, I still
feel the excitement of the competition. I still
keep in touch with my new friends everyday
through Facebook, Wechat, Twitter, Tumblr,
and Instagram. I still get pictures from them,
those taken from their cameras. I still get
updates if there are new posts in the Chinese
Bridge website. The euphoria is still alive and
I hope it will be so for a little while longer.
Looking back, it was a wise thing to follow
my heart’s desire – to learn Mandarin. While
people my age could not relate to my dream, I
was not discouraged to pursue something that
I firmly believe will be of utmost significance
in the future. Considering that our world is
now highly globalized it will be an advantage
to be able to speak a third language. My
Chinese dream is barely over. In fact, it’s just
starting to get even more interesting. I still
have great desire to pursue higher education
related to Chinese Language Teaching. This
dream has landed me many opportunities
and so it is no wonder why I’m determined to
pursue it. I do hope that others would follow
suit and be as fortunate as I am. I would love
to see more people share this dream in the
future.

with the industry. “We learned everything
the hard way because all of us did not have
any background in media,” says Tan, who
himself was a successful IT entrepreneur
before joining the family business.
Another challenge CHInoy TV encountered
early on is the lack of advertisers. Being a
community show, there is a limited reach on
its viewership. But the family’s goodwill in the
Chinoy community has been invaluable. “For
the first four years, majority of the supporters
are from the Chinese community,” reveals
Tan. However, he also acknowledges these
support is short term. The reality is that
the community is a niche market; a market
that is not in the radar for the mainstream
advertisers yet. To attract them, Tan reasons
that it is necessary to implement changes
because of the challenges he sees. “If we
don’t make the necessary changes, it will be
hard to sustain the operations.”

dramatically increased. Mainstream viewers
which proved non-existent before became
bonafide followers of CHInoy TV.
Bridging two cultures
CHInoy TV’s history can be traced back
to AM@NBN almost nine years ago.
Back then, the show is about highlighting
the different activities of the Chinese
associations, and serves as the media tool of
these organizations. “Initially, when my dad
started the show, it was about giving back
to the community,” explains Alvin Kingson
Tan, President of Fil-Chi Media Production.
Tan jumped in when the show moved to
NET25. The timing couldn’t have been
better. With his entrepreneurial mind, Tan
saw a lot of potential in it. CHInoy TV now
had a broader audience and he capitalized it
by stirring the show to a different direction;
one that would appeal to the younger
generation, and tapped the Filipino viewers
as well. Hence, he recommended a revamp of
the show from a community news program
to a magazine lifestyle show that would
feature different unique activities (CHInoy
Active), restaurants (CHInoy Chow), fashion
(CHInoy Style), and personalities (CHInoy
Profile).
In the last four years, CHInoy TV has been
nominated best magazine show by the
PMPC in 2011; and was also a recipient
of the Anak TV Awards in 2013. More
importantly, the vision of being a bridge
between the Chinese and the Filipinos has
been realized.
From NBN, the show transferred to IBC13
because it had better viewership. And it was
In 2010, CHInoy TV became part of
NET25’s program line-up and viewership
n 2010, several days before the airing
of Chi in NET25, producers from the
station complained that the “Chi” has a
spiritual connotation to it. It hadn’t had
that problem before. This time however, it
contradicts the faith of NET25. Undeterred,
the producers creatively changed the name
to “CHInoy TV.” The gaffe turned out to
be a blessing, and CHInoy TV became a
household name within the community.

Everything was uphill from then on.
A four-year on-the-job training
But what the show achieved so far was not
without bumps along the way. For a family
that ran a thriving business before CHInoy
TV, venturing into media presents a totally
different dimension; and in Tan’s word, “not
normal for a Chinese family.” Henceforth,
challenges were bound to be plentiful.
One of which was the lack of familiarity
For starters, Tan has enrolled himself in a
film workshop so he could better grasp
the production work and the business of
running a media company. “I’m learning
about the camera and even basic editing,”
says Tan. Secondly, operations were run
informally which is typical of a Chinese
family business. This time however, Tan is
trying to professionalize everything, from
the hosts down to the production crews.
is no slowing down indeed.
Tan proudly shares CHInoy TV’s milestone
projects: CHInoy Hao Bang (好棒), the
cultural presentation showcasing the rich
traditions of the Chinese during the annual
Chinese New Year Celebration at SM
Mall of Asia. It is bringing the Chinatown
closer to the Filipinos. CHInoy Star Ka

them an avenue to showcase that.”

highlights
the
entrepreneurial
spirit of the Chinoys, and how the Filipinos
can learn from them.
Tan smiles proudly, “The vision of CHInoy
TV is to become a TV network eight years
from now. To become a multiplatform media
company that includes TV, radio, print, and
web.”
From the way things are going, CHInoy TV
may soon become CHInoy Channel.
To reach a wider audience and further increase
its viewership, CHInoy TV signed Gretchen
Ho as part of its effort to go mainstream.
Ho seems to be a perfect fit. After all, Ho,
with her credentials, is someone who could
best represent the modern day Chinoy youth,
and connect to a wider audience. She is every
bit Filipino as she is Chinese.
An even bigger CHInoy TV
While there is still much work to be done, it
cannot be denied that CHInoy TV has had
some form of success. In this industry, the
hurdle rate is four years. Once a company
is past that, it can be said that it has gained
stability. It is now in its fourth year, and there

under the Marketing, PR, or Online Presence Category. The awarding
ceremonies were held on August 29 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City.
The Chinese Marketing Program is one of the key business development programs
that taps a specific target market: the Chinese. The program was executed through
a wide array of marketing and public relations initiatives that included partnerships
with various Chinese-Filipino businesses, institutions, and organizations, press
releases and advertisements in the local Chinese language dailies, Chinese-language
flyers, and cultural events that promote the Chinese culture. Nin Hao magazine is one
of the major components of the Chinese Marketing Program.
It also received warm reception and feedback from the delegates during the Best
Practices Presentation, where proponents of winning projects share their practices to
other members of the hospital industry.

the ceremony, GBP and TPC officials were joined by Cebu vice governor Agnes Magpale, Toledo City mayor John Henry Osmeña
and Energy undersecretary Raul Aguilos.
As a reaffirmation of GBP’s commitment to the growth and development of the Visayas and heeding the government’s call for more power supply
to avert the looming energy crisis in 2015, GBP chairman Francisco Sebastian said, “Toledo Power wasted no time in completing the expansion
project three months ahead of schedule. Immediate completion of the expansion project is a validation of effective private-public partnerships,
working for a common goal of building a progressive nation.”
The expansion project, worth P10.2 billion and using Circulating

is an addition to TPC’s existing 60-MW coal-fired and 40 MW dieselfired plants. The new plant will supply power requirements of Carmen

Mining and Development Corporation. The expansion project will
also help ease the power situation in the Visayas grid and serve power

GBP is one of the leading independent power producers in the Visayas.
Its power plants are strategically located where high growth is expected,
with power facilities located in Cebu, Iloilo, Aklan, and Mindoro. The

s one of the country’s champions for quality education, Metrobank Group Chairman Dr.
George S.K. Ty, through his family foundation GT-Metro Foundation (GTMF), recently
pledged P120 million for the construction of the Learning Innovation Wing of the Areté, a
new building that will rise at the Ateneo de Manila University’s campus in Quezon City.
The Areté―Greek for excellence, goodness, virtue―will be Ateneo’s iconic creativity complex designed by
Arch. William Coscolluela and Associates, envisioned to be a center that will cultivate the spirit of creativity
and innovation among students. The George S.K. Ty Learning Innovation Wing will serve as an academic
wing housing non-traditional classrooms, creative spaces, performing arts studios, as well as the AteneoCordon Bleu Culinary Institute, which shall have a small restaurant at the ground floor.
Dr. Ty, together with GTMF Chairman Arthur Ty and Executive Director Aniceto M. Sobrepeña, turned
over the first tranche of the P120 million donation to Ateneo President, Fr. Jett Villarin, SJ and Vice
President for Loyola Schools, Dr. John Paul Vergara, during a simple memorandum of agreement signing
activity at the Metrobank Plaza on August 14.
“Education is very important in our lives. This is why I have chosen to support the Areté, which will help
young people enhance their skills, develop their creativity, and foster their love for learning,” said Dr. Ty,
who aims to leave a lasting mark on the country’s education system by supporting the construction of
educational facilities through GTMF Legacy Projects.

Metrobank Group sustains
Yolanda rehabilitation
M
any months after the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda,
rehabilitation of damaged health facilities and
restoration of vital health services in affected areas
remain a top priority.
In this light, the Metrobank Group through GT-Metro Foundation
(GTMF), the family foundation of Metrobank Group Chairman Dr.
George S.K. Ty, signed a memorandum of agreement with Plan
International – Philippines middle of August at the Metrobank
Plaza to signify its partnership for the rehabilitation of health
facilities.
GTMF and Plan will build three health stations with birthing
facilities in Palo, Leyte; and Mercedes and Guiuan, Eastern
Samar. As an added feature of the Department of Health (DOH)compliant health stations, disaster-resilient elements will be
included in the design and planning of the stations.
GTMF has allocated over P6 million for the construction of the
health stations that will be complemented by a P1.6 million
contribution from Plan, which will manage the projects. GTMF
Deputy Executive Director Nicanor Torres Jr. considered the
32 | NIN HAO | SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2014
undertaking as Metrobank Group’s contribution to restoring
access to health services, especially to pregnant mothers and
their newborn babies.
The World Health Organization estimated that some 220,000
pregnant mothers will give birth within the year and about 70,000
newborn babies are in need of care in Yolanda-affected areas.
“As a foundation that is primarily into implementing health
programs for disadvantaged communities, we see how a lack
in working health facilities may reverse the gains that have been
achieved in curbing maternal and infant mortalities in challenging
areas,” said Mr. Torres.
Each health station will be fully equipped to meet the basic
health needs of up to 900 families residing in three to six
adjacent barangays and cater to about 10-15 births per month.
Aside from the health stations, the Metrobank Group will build
25 classrooms in eight schools and complete the turnover of 500
fishing boats in various Yolanda-affected areas in the Visayas.
GTMF Deputy Executive Director
Nicanor Torres Jr. and Plan InternationalPhilippines Country Director Catharina
van der Hor sign a MOA to construct
health stations with birthing facilities in
Leyte and Eastern Samar.
