Out of 55 charities rated, Fisher House Foundation is one of three charities to receive their A+ rating. Charity Navigator Fisher House Foundation has received Charity Navigator’s coveted 4-star rating for sound fiscal management for the 12th consecutive year, a rating achieved by less than 1% of the charities they monitor. “We are proud to announce Fisher House Foundation has earned our twelfth consecutive 4-star rating. Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that your organization adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way. Less than 1% of the charities we rate have received at least 12 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Fisher House Foundation outperforms most other charities in America. Flights are made possible through frequent flyer mile donations made by individual airline passengers. Fisher House Foundation administers the Hero Miles and Hotels for Heroes programs in partnership with the Department of Defense, in accordance with Public Law 108-375, Section 585, 2005 Defense Authorization Act, which was amended in 2011. Airline Partners Fisher House Foundation partnered with the following airlines: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and United Airlines. * The Hero Miles program provides airline tickets for wounded, injured, or ill Service members and their families. These tickets can only be used for travel related to the Service member’s medical condition and/or continuing rehabilitation. Limited exceptions are permitted in accordance with the individual airline agreements. How the Program Works There are two categories of eligible recipients: 1. Wounded, injured, and ill Service members on approved leave may be given a round-trip airline ticket for a trip from the medical center to their home or to attend an authorized event, if they are not eligible for government funded airfare. 2. Wounded, injured, and ill Service members may be given a round-trip airline ticket to enable their family or close friends to visit them while they are undergoing treatment at an authorized medical center. The request for tickets originates with the Service member and is forwarded to Fisher House Foundation by social work staff, the family assistance center at a medical center, or through service casualty offices. For more information about Hero Miles and Fisher House Foundation, check out our website at www.fisherhouse.org, or contact us at 888.294.8560. Program of Fisher House Foundation Fact Sheet The Hotels for Heroes program provides hotel rooms to the families of wounded, injured, and ill military Service members who are undergoing treatment at authorized medical centers when a Fisher House is full. Rooms are made possible through the donation of rewards points by the hotels and the hotel’s rewards members. Agreements with our hotel partners only permit rooms for wounded, injured, or ill service members and their families. These rooms cannot be used for special events or leisure travel not related to a medical condition. Fisher House Foundation administers the Hotels for Heroes and Hero Miles programs in partnership with the Department of Defense in accordance with Public Law 108-375, Section 585, the 2005 Defense Authorization Act, which was amended in 2011 to include Hotels for Heroes. Hotel Partners Fisher House Foundation has partnered with the following major hotels: AmericInn, Best Western, Choice Hotels, Hilton, La Quinta Inn and Suites, Marriott, and Wyndham. How the Program Works Requests for lodging come from two primary sources: 1. Fisher House managers make Hotels for Heroes requests when the local Fisher House is full, in order to provide lodging for a family until a room at the house becomes available. 2. Hospital case workers and other military liaisons submit requests on behalf of Service members who are undergoing treatment at hospitals where there is no Fisher House. These requests are approved on a case-bycase basis only. Veterans are only eligible when the request originates through a Fisher House that would provide lodging for that Veteran, but cannot because the Fisher House is full. If a Service member or their family is eligible to stay at a Fisher House, and the Fisher House is full, they are eligible to benefit from Hotels for Heroes. The Hotels for Heroes program is designed to meet short-term lodging needs of a week or less. Lodging in excess of a week would be provided on a case-by-case basis, according to the specific circumstance and need, as identified by the requesting Fisher House manager or military liaison. Fisher Houses are the best resource for long-term needs. For more information about Hotels for Heroes and Fisher House Foundation, visit our website at www.fisherhouse.org, or contact us at 1-888-294-8560. Kenneth Fisher Partner, Fisher Brothers Chairman & CEO, Fisher House Foundation Co-Chairman, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Kenneth Fisher is a senior partner at Fisher Brothers, based in New York City, and is part of the third generation of leadership, overseeing the leasing, management and marketing of more than five million square feet of class-A commercial space in Midtown Manhattan covering the Park, 6th and 3rd Avenue corridors and 1.5 million square feet in Washington DC. Ken is a member of the executive committees of New York’s Board of Governors of the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY), as well as the Washington D.C. based Real Estate Round Table. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Strategic Hotels and Resorts, a publicly traded REIT. Ken is a member of the executive committee of City Investment Fund, a $770 million multi-year plan established in 1996 to mobilize the city’s financial and business leaders to help build a stronger and more diversified local economy. As a philanthropist, Ken is Chairman and CEO of the Fisher House Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that constructs “comfort homes” for families of hospitalized military personnel and veterans. Founded in 1990 by his late uncle Zachary Fisher, the program has built 63 houses to date in the United States and Germany, and partnered with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and Help for Heroes to open a Fisher House for British Families in the United Kingdom. Fisher Houses serve more than 22,000 families each year and have saved more than $200 million in lodging and travel costs since inception. The foundation also administers the Hero Miles program, allowing frequent flyers to donate their unused airline miles to provide free tickets to military families, and the Hotel for Heroes program. Ken also serves as co-chairman of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City, which welcomes nearly 1 million visitors every year. The Intrepid Museum is home to more than 30 military aircraft, the nuclear submarine Growler, and the NASA Space Shuttle Enterprise. He sits on the board of directors of the New York’s Finest Foundation and the Jackie Robinson Foundation and the General Command and Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, as well as a trustee of the New York City Association for the Help of Retarded Children. For his philanthropic endeavors and humanitarian efforts, Ken has been named an honorary Army Green Beret (2004) and an Honorary Marine (2011). He has been twice awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal as well as the Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the second with Bronze Palm, presented for exceptionally distinguished performance of duty contributing to national security or defense of the United States, and is the nation’s highest non-combat related military award and highest joint service decoration. He has also received the Highest Civilian Honor awarded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, The Secretary’s Award. In 2007, Ken was appointed by George W. Bush the President’s Commission on Care for America’s Returning Wounded Warriors, which conducted a comprehensive review of the care provided to soldiers who return from the battlefield. Later that year, he joined the ranks of an elite few to be named one of America’s Best Leaders by US News & World Report and Harvard University. Ken has also received George C. Marshall Medal, The Association of the United States Army Highest Civilian Award. Among other honors, he received the Public Awareness award from the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit. He has also received the Arts & Entertainment television network’s prestigious “Lives That Make a Difference” Award. This January Ken gained recognition by his industry peers, receiving The Real Estate Board of New York’s prestigious Harry B. Helmsley Distinguished New Yorker Award celebrating a lifetime of exceptional achievement in the real estate industry and civic welfare. Zachary Fisher Founder, Fisher House Program September 26, 1910 -- June 4, 1999 Zachary Fisher was a prominent figure in the New York real estate community and a major philanthropic benefactor for the men and women in the United States Armed Forces, as well as numerous other not-for-profit organizations. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Fisher began working in construction at the age of 16. Shortly thereafter, he and his brothers, Martin and Larry, joined forces to form Fisher Brothers, which has grown into one of the real estate industry’s premier residential and commercial developers, owning more than five lion square feet of office space. From the earliest days of his construction career, Mr. Fisher was a strong supporter of the U.S. Armed Forces. Prevented from active service in World War II due to a leg injury, Mr. Fisher drew on his building skills to assist the U.S. Coastal Service in the construction of coastal fortifications. His patronage of the Armed Forces became an ongoing concern from that time, evolving to occupy increasing amounts of his energies. In the 1970s, while remaining active in Fisher Brothers, Mr. Fisher’s commitment to both the Armed Forces and other philanthropic causes intensified still further through his leadership role in a number of major projects. In 1978, he founded the Intrepid Museum Foundation to save the historic and battle-scarred aircraft carrier INTREPID from the scrap yard. Four years of involvement with the foundation resulted in his spearheading the opening of the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City, now the world’s largest naval museum. In 1982, the same year as the museum’s opening, Mr. Fisher established the Zachary and Elizabeth M. Fisher Armed Services Foundation. Through the foundation, he made significant contributions to the families of the victims of the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983. Since then, the Armed Services Foundation has made contributions of $25,000 to numerous military families who have lost loved ones under tragic circumstances. Mr. Fisher made similar donations to the families of New York City firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. His Armed Services Foundation also provides scholarship funds to active and former service members and their families. In 1990, Mr. and Mrs. Fisher began the Fisher House program, dedicating more than $20 million to the construction of comfort homes for families of hospitalized military personnel. With the establishment of Fisher Houses throughout the United States and in Landstuhl, Germany, the program has provided thousands of lodging days, saving families millions of dollars each year, a service invaluable to these Armed Forces families. In 1994, Mr. Fisher, in partnership with David Rockefeller, established the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, which funds Alzheimer’s disease research with the goal of finding a cause and cure. The foundation operates the nation’s largest and most modern Alzheimer’s research laboratory, housed at The Rockefeller University in New York City. Throughout his life, Mr. Fisher held a number of posts on a variety of charitable and arts organizations and military charities throughout the country. He served as Honorary Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation and was a supporter of the Coast Guard Foundation, the Navy League and other military charities. Mr. Fisher also established the annual Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Award for Excellence in Military Medicine. He was a major supporter of the Metropolitan Opera, Temple Israel, the Jewish Institute of National Security Affairs, the George C. Marshall Foundation, the Margaret Thatcher Foundation, the Reagan Presidential Library, the United Jewish Appeal and many other organizations. Mr. Fisher also served on the boards of Carnegie Hall and several other institutions and received honorary doctorate degrees from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. In 1998, Mr. Fisher received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton in honor of his wide-ranging contributions on behalf of the young men and women in the US Armed Forces. He also received the Horatio Alger Award, the Volunteer Action Award, the Presidential Citizens Medal, the Senior Civilian Award from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Secretary of Defense, as well as the top awards a civilian can receive from each branch of the military. Separately, Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush and Bill Clinton, as well as Margaret Thatcher and the late Yitzak Rabin, recognized Mr. Fisher for his support of charitable organizations throughout the United States. In December, 1999, President Clinton signed Public Law 106-161 conferring upon Zachary Fisher the status of an honorary veteran in the U.S. Armed Forces. He was recommended for this honor prior to his death on June 4, 1999. Three words, etched in the marble of Zachary Fisher’s tomb, speak to his legacy: Builder…Philanthropist…Patriot Because we our heroes. For more than 25 years, the Fisher House program has provided free temporary lodging to military and Veterans’ families so they can be close to their loved ones during treatment at major military and VA medical centers, allowing them to focus on what’s important — the healing process. The Fisher House Foundation is able to build and help support the operation of more than 65 existing homes due to the generosity of people like you. Additionally, our Hero Miles program assists with travel needs, our Hotel for Heroes program offers additional accommodation options and our scholarship program offers educational opportunities to military children and spouses. With your help, we will continue to meet the needs of our military community. Show your love by making a donation to Fisher House in support of a “home away from home” for our heroes.
