Special Guest: Sophie Wood See the stunning work from Sophie Wood at the Auckland ‘Stitches’ New Zealand Artist Sophie Wood will be heading to the Auckland Stitches and Craft Show in April 2016. She’ll be bringing with her some award winning international works that have inspired quilters around the world. International textile art display A Matter of Time See page 4 Sophie has always been an extremely hands on and creative person. Sophie’s interests were primarily in art, design and illustration, it wasn’t until her late 20s that she became familiar with art quilting and textile art. After completing her first quilting project in 2010, Sophie was inspired to attend the Quilt Fair in New Zealand. It was here she began to appreciate art quilting and she’s been inspiring others with stunning projects ever since. Sophie started to exhibit her work around Australia in 2012 and not long after she found herself exhibiting work overseas. Her first international quilt was shown at the Houston International Quilt Festival in 2015. Self Portrait by Sophie Wood Beautiful embroidery The Medieval Project See page 4 New York Lights by Sophie Wood On the main stage Mixed media classes See page 8 It is about 50 years since the term ‘Flower Power’ was first coined to describe a non-violent protest against the Vietnam War, and to celebrate, fibre aficionados from around the world have created brightly coloured motifs and scrumbles with a flower power theme. Vintage style guru Miss Chrissy Keepence AND Sew So Easy. See page 3! The flower power movement of passive resistance rapidly spread from its beginnings in Berkeley, California, and eventually the term ‘flower child’ became synonymous with ‘hippie’ and a counterculture embracing psychedelic music and art sprang up. Prudence Mapstone has created a unique and spectacular collaborative artwork by combining the hundreds of knitted and crocheted motifs received from around the world. See this amazing 10 metre long installation at the show! GR EAT C DE MO S, LA S SES, T IPS A N FA SHIO N A N D MO D TR IC KS – R E! WElcome! You probably know our shows already - for many years we have run a craft event in Hamilton and we have loads of Kiwi visitors to our events in Australia, so we are delighted to be bringing The Stitches & Craft Show to Auckland on April 28 to 30. See At the show you’ll find all the latest specialist craft supplies from around Australia and New Zealand all under one roof – and plenty of unique items you won’t usually find in your local neighbourhood. Many of our retailers design their own ranges or travel the world to bring hot new products to our shows. But, the show is not just a great shopping opportunity – you’ll see touring exhibitions that we’ve brought in specially for you, as well as guest artist displays and there’s a full program of workshops where you’ll be able to learn from some expert tutors. There’ll be some amazing textile art and quilts on display, a pop-up vintage salon with makeovers, plus a daily handmade fashion and homewares presentation on the stage. Don’t miss the installation of crochet art – a 10metre-long collaborative piece made up of freeform designs by 207 contributors from 24 countries. This spectacular piece is the concept of freeform knit-crochet guru Prudence Mapstone and is a tribute to 50 years of Flower Power. Also on the must-see list is the new exhibition organised and curated by Brenda Gael Smith, themed A Matter of Time, comprising 32 amazing works by quilters from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US. Plus we welcome Sophie Wood from Christchurch with a show of her edgy art quilts. Save the date and block out your diary now! The exhibition will include works by some of the world’s foremost quilters from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA. The high standard of previous exhibitions curated by Brenda Gael Smith; recently Beneath the Southern Sky and Living Colour!, makes this a highly anticipated show. DAILY: Join A Matter of Time entrant Annie White for a floor talk exploring the fourth dimension in cloth at 12.30pm, at the display. Starting from its exhibition life at Pour l’Amour du Fil in Nantes, France, Australia and now in New Zealand, this embroidery and textile art project is rich in history and colour. This art project has been initiated by renowned Australian textile designer Dijanne Cevaal with contributions from textile artists around Australia. With contributions in linocut, hand dyeing, stitching, layering, quilting and embellishing, this textile display will stand the test of time. Inspired by a medieval period in France known for its rich tapestries and embroideries, The Medieval Project radiates colour and inspiration from this important part of history. See it at the show! Seasonal Yellow: Julie Haddrick The Eternity Spiral: Neroli Henderson Wabi sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature and the acceptance of life’s natural cycle of growth, decay and death, and this philosophy has continued to stimulate Haddrick in her creative practice. Inspiring a pared-down ‘essence’; a minimalism embracing the ‘bloom of time’, Haddrick combined botanical illustration with fabric and stitch. She breeds and at times hand-rears yellow canaries; this love and close observation of her canaries fuelling the ‘TIME’ challenge. ‘Seasonal Yellow’ embraces and reveres her aviaries’ bloom of time. We are all held mercilessly by the hands of time; our bodies dissolve or perhaps evolve depending on your point of view. Our souls float to the fourth dimension. 4 ♥ The Stitches & Craft Show News A human Möbius strip — no end and no beginning — shows our unravelling, our aging, and I’ve made it deliberately metallic to show our impervious nature as we fight back, doing all we can to delay the inevitable.
