2016 FAIR PREVIEW
The Register-Herald
Wednesday, July 27, 2016 7
A note from the Queen
By Jr. Fair Queen
Aubrey Stevenson
EATON — Ah,
the fair. Many
people come every
year to experience
and enjoy the
sights, sounds,
and smells of our
annual county
fair. Whether you
come to the fair
to enjoy the rides
and entertainment, the food
along the midway,
or the many 4-H
projects, there is
a lot of work put
into the fair that
you might not
know about.
Hundreds of
youth projects are
brought to the
fair, ranging from
horses to clothing.
Many different
organizations,
including 4-H,
FFA, and FCCLA
work all year to
raise, grow, make,
or train a quality
project or animal.
Every day they
are refining their
work, be it grooming and washing
an animal or organizing a collection, in order to
exhibit at the fair.
The organizations mentioned
earlier perform
different functions
besides showing animals. In
4-H, youth are
provided with
over 200 project
choices based on
interest areas.
FFA members
can also exhibit a
shop or crop project that they have
worked on in the
Agriculture education classroom or
in a shop. Along
with showing
their individual
projects, the fair
provides exhibitors with many
chances to make
new friends and
visit with old
friends. Some of
these activities
are: barn games,
a cook-off, style
reviews, a king
and queen contest, and a dance
that occurs on the
Friday of the fair.
The county fair
is not only a place
to have fun. It
provides an ideal
leadership experience for its young
participants. This
experience, in
turn, goes far in
developing skills
like problem solving, decision making, program planning and developing responsibility.
These skills boost
confidence, which
helps children
do well in their
education, which
in turn helps them
to be in a good
position to get a
job and support
themselves. The
fair carries out the
mission of positive youth development, which is
to develop competent, caring, concerned citizens.
Along with
exhibiting projects, a select few
youth are on the
Junior Fair Board.
JFB members
grow their leadership skills even
more as they
plan and conduct
various shows,
activities, and
conduct fundraisers to help pay for
awards. They also
work with adults
on committees
that help decide
how shows should
be run and many
other pre-fair and
fair related activities.
You are encouraged to come out
to the fair and
support the many
youth exhibitors.
Thank you and
enjoy the 2016

I’ve grown up at

Johnny and I are

that’s why we are
excited to represent The Preble

2016 FAIR PREVIEW
Cooking events
From Jr. Fair Board
EATON — The Preble
County Jr. Fair Cook-Off
event, Aug. 2, will include
more than just 4-H members
completing a foods project.
The Cook-Off and Mystery
Mixer will allow participants
to show their culinary skills.
There are approximately 30
participants this year.
The first class is the CookOff, which is open only
to 4-H members who are
completing a food and nutrition project. In this event,
contestants receive a recipe
designated for his/her appropriate age division approximately three weeks prior to
the event. Participants can
practice making the recipe
and must supply all materi-

als, except stoves, to make
the item the day of judging.
The second class, Mystery
Mixer, is open to all Jr. Fair
participants including FFA,
Scouts, and FCCLA. These
participants will receive a
list of ingredients and equipment needed prior to the
event, but no recipe. When
the participants arrive at the
event, they will be given the
recipe and asked to make
the item.
Judges evaluate each
The Register-Herald
contestant on work habits,
time management, equipment management, and the
quality of the finished product. The judges will place
each age division in each
class. The top two places
in each age division will
compete for the respective
class champion- Cook-Off or
Mystery Mixer. The Champions from each class will
then compete for an overall
Grand and Reserve Grand
Champion. The Grand
Champion, Reserve Champion, class Champions, as
well as the remaining first
and second place winners in
each age division will participate in a Baked Goods Auction, on Thursday, August 4,
at approximately 4:30 p.m.
in the Toney Building. The
public is welcome to come
and bid and go home with
a baked good. Dairy exhibitors also sell products as

Jr. Fair Dog Show
From Jr. Fair Board
EATON —
The 2016 Preble
County Jr. Fair
Dog Show is on
Saturday, July 27,
at approximately
3:30 p.m.
A major change
in the Dog department is a move
in the show
location from
Bruner Arena
to the Dairy
Good
Luck
Arena. Exhibitors and their
dogs compete in
showmanship and
obedience classes.
Members are
evaluated on their
performance with
the dog, how the
dog is groomed,
and exhibitor’s
knowledge of dog
care. These young
people have spent
hours training
their dogs with
Wednesday, July 27, 2016 11
the help of 4-H
volunteers to be
prepared for their
show.
An exciting
addition as well in
the Dog Department is that 4-H
dogs will have a
place on the fairgrounds for exhibition this year.
The public will
be able to visit
with dog exhibitors and advisors
throughout the
week to learn not
only about the 4-H
dog program but
about dogs in general. Throughout
the week there
will be special
demonstrations
and exhibitions
that will be open
to the public.
The Dog Showman of Showmen
will also be participating for the
second year in the
Grand Showman
of Showmen contest.

2016 FAIR PREVIEW
The Register-Herald
FFA Shop & Crop Exhibits
From Jr. Fair Board
EATON — Members of
the five Preble County FFA
chapters and the Miami Valley Career & Technology
Center FFA will exhibit their
shop and crop projects at
the Preble County Fair, July
30-Aug. 6.
The FFA crop project
display will feature corn,
soybeans, hay, oats, fruits,
vegetables and other field
crops. There will also be
displays of eggs and honey.
The industrial talents of
high school students will be
featured in the shop project
display. There will be woodworking, welding, furniture,
metal, and refurbished farm
equipment exhibited.
All of these projects are
a part of the FFA member’s
schoolwork through the
Agricultural Education Program. These projects are
completed throughout the
school year under the supervision of the Agricultural
Education teachers.
Following the judging of
these projects on July 30,
the ribbons and rosettes
designating the results of the
judging will be displayed.
For each item that receives
a place ribbon, the member
accumulates points. Both
Shop and Crop Sweepstakes
Award will be given to the
member in each category
who accumulates the most
points.
FFA chapters also have
displays representing the
work and accomplishments
of the year. FFA members
have worked hard in the
weeks before the fair to
renovate the old commercial
building on the fairgrounds
into an agricultural center to
highlight agriculture education in Preble County.

Junior Fair clothing displays and style shows
From Jr. Fair Board
EATON — Not all 4-H
Clothing Projects require a
sewing machine or a hem.
Some projects require kids
to raid their closets or hit
the mall and read labels,
while others allow members to make tote bags,
costumes, business suits,
formals, or even a simple
pair of shorts.
4-H members at the
Preble County Fair, July
30-Aug. 6, will display
approximately 54 clothing
projects. 4-H members may
choose from 18 different
types of clothing projects.
The 4-H projects vary in
type of garment constructed. Garment categories
include sportswear, loungewear, formal attire, business
wear and more. Consumerbased projects, which do
not require members to
construct garments, are
also an option. Consumer
projects teach members to
select items for existing
wardrobes based on value,
use, fit and fabric.
The 4-H members first
compete in pre-fair evaluation, which took place on
Tuesday, July 12th. They

are interviewed by a judge
and evaluated on the knowledge gained through the
project and/or the garment’s
construction. At the fair,
members display their projects throughout the week in
the 4-H Club Booth. Members also have an opportunity to participate in style
reviews. The Style Revue
judges evaluate the members’ posture and poise, as
well as the fit of and the
overall appearance of the
garment. Judges select the
State Fair representatives at
pre-fair evaluation this year.

Junior Fair Food & Nutrition projects and activities
EATON — 4-H Food and
Nutrition projects allow
youth to learn how to
acquire good cooking skills
and nutritional knowledge.
There are 14 food projects
in 4-H to help youth navigate the dietary assembly
line and practice skills.
There will be approximately 50 entries in the
Food Show, Monday, Aug.
1, at 9:30 a.m. The food
projects include all the latest nutritional recommendations and information, as
well as many types of preparation techniques. There
are projects dealing with
quick breads, yeast breads,
breakfast, outdoor cookery,
American foods, and international items. A new outdoor cooking project lets
youth learn to cook beyond
the grill. Campfire cooking
and homemade solar ovens
provide a challenge.
Members who take food
projects do more than learn
how to cook. They acquire
valuable information about
basic nutrition, my plate,
cost per serving, development of balanced menus,
food safety and much more.
At the Food Show & Interview, members are asked to
bring an item, which they
learned to prepare over

the course of their project
work. They are then questioned about the project,
preparation, food safety
and purchasing product
information. The judges
place the classes and desig-
nate the Outstanding of the
Day winners. State Fair representatives were selected
at Pre-Fair nutrition interviews this year before fair.
Winning exhibitors receive
merchandise awards.

Showman of Showmen
From Jr. Fair Board
EATON — The best showman each species has to offer
compete in the Grand Showman of Showmen contest on
Thursday, Aug. 4, at 7 p.m.
All Preble County Jr. Fair
livestock exhibitors must
participate in a showmanship class, within their
livestock department. The
exhibitors are divided by
age and evaluated on their
performance with the animal, their knowledge of the
animal, and the care that was
given to the animal. All age
class winners then compete
for the department’s title
of Showman of Showmen.
The livestock departments
represented in this contest
are beef cattle, sheep, goats,

swine, rabbits, dairy cattle,
equine, dog and poultry. The
nine participants compete
for a belt buckle and the title
of Grand Showman of Showman.
To win this honor, the
exhibitor must show each
species, except the one that
he/she is representing. The
person who most successfully shows the seven competitive species is deemed the
winner. This is a very chal-
lenging and exciting event
for the nine showman in the
contest and very suspenseful
for the audience.
The Grand Showman of
Showmen event will take
place in the Expo Center,
with the exception of the
horse department. All other
species will be brought to
this building for the exciting event. Taking place on
Thursday, Aug. 4, the Grand
Showman of Showmen
always seems to be a favorite
among fairgoers.
