―Put Your Hands Together‖
Here we are in the Summer of 2011. As the song
says, where has all the time gone? I know a lot of
people (not all of them Irish) who celebrate a half
way to Saint Patrick’s Day, but each year I look
forward to Montgomery so much I begin thinking
and talking about the ―event‖ in April, my own
half way to Montgomery date. In this edition of
BluePrints we will see the listing of events, from
performance to conformation. This is almost a week of great competition for our Kerries that no one should miss at least once.
Besides the Kimberton, Hatboro, Devon and Montgomery shows, our own US club also holds its annual meeting on the Friday
before our dinner. Then just in case that wasn’t enough, the Futurity and Maturity are held on Saturday. The Futurity/Maturity is
very special to our club. This is for the breeders and a showcase for the young dogs. This is what being a breeder of Kerries is
about. A showcase for what we will be seeing over the next 5-7 years. My thanks goes to Linda Lopez from the South, Siobhan
Conti from the East and Nanette Loya from the West for agreeing to judge our Futurity. We have a number of additional names
who showed an interest in judging the Futurity/Maturity but only three could be used. Thank you for the outpouring of interest.
Now there should be an outpouring of interest from our membership in nominating their litters. Show everyone that you care.
So you see why I begin to get excited about October in April. Something like Christmas in June.
I believe in celebrating one’s accomplishments and not dwelling on the disappointments. It is important to have good people and
robust processes in place to achieve what we do and to ensure that the Kerries importance does not diminish. We will continue to
learn and move ahead. I believe the Board of Governor’s has represented our membership exceptionally well and have continued
to move our club ahead. For those of you who cannot join us at our annual meeting in October, I will mention some of our successes so you can all recognize the members of the Board by ―Putting Your Hands Together‖.
We have a number of Board members term limited out and others who have come up for reelection but because of the work done
by our nominating committee – Lynn Duckett, Martha Nazak and Julie Manahan we came up with a great slate of candidates .
The ―newbies‖ are Monica Adair (MI), Mary McGreevy (WV) and Diane Lee (CA). The Governors agreeing to stay and continue their great service are Charlene Dwyer, Carl Ashby and Reita Nicholson. We should be excited to have these new and returning Board members.
The Florida Chapter Club has agreed to be responsible for a booth at Meet the Breeds at the Eukanuba show in Orlando in December. We should all try and reach out and offer our support and assistance in making it the best booth at the show. Please
speak to Linda Lopez or Linda Pheasant about the booth.
The Board approved the purchase of a new laptop for our very own editor of BluePrints, Janie MacBryde. This is the next best
thing to an ―Easy‖ button. BluePrints takes an enormous amount of time and effort and Janie is an unsung hero.
We also were able to come up with a new list of eligible judges for our Traveling and National specialty as well as approving a
supported entry at the Friday Hatboro show and a supported entry at Oak Ridge Kennel Club in November. The Board approved
several changes to our Versatility Awards as well as a dedication to Fred Fishell at our Traveling Specialty at Canfield. Fred as
we all know passed away this year and we thought it only right to honor him. We also have approved new trophies for the Montgomery weekend and a change in the eligibility rules for the Futurity/Maturity that takes effect in 2012. Dr. Brian Tormey as
Membership Chair has done an exceptional job (as each of our members have done) in attracting new members. This is what we
must keep up with. When a breeder sells a Kerry puppy to a new owner, think about a membership to the USKBTC going with
that sale.
I could cite many other tasks that have been completed or are underway, but I believe that these highlights convey the point. The
work undertaken by the Board, our chapter clubs and by our many volunteers is critical and designed to provide a strong foundational base from which to move to the next level of excellence and prominence for the US Kerry Blue Terrier Club.
In the end, the collective efforts of our Board and members will allow us to portray our Kerries as we know they should. This
begins with the attraction and retention of the best, brightest, energetic and most articulate people involved with our wonderful
breed. All of our efforts this year are meant to help us achieve this goal and propel us toward reaching the larger audience, sooner rather than later. Thank you for your efforts and I hope to see you all at our annual meeting.

A Letter from the Editor. . .
Summer is a busy time for those in the dog show world, and this year is no different. This
issue is filled with chapter club and Traveling specialty results that have already taken
place, and another Traveling specialty is just around the corner! You will also find the
usual ads for upcoming specialties and supported entries around the country, and I hope
you will mark your calendars for these shows.
Two club members have written very informative articles for us about the activities they
are sharing with their Kerry companions. Many thanks to Patty Sontag and Sara Garthly
for taking the time to write about the fun they are having, and sending photos too. Owners
should never doubt that their Kerry companions are not only versatile, but are also up for
fun and adventure in all it’s forms! Take time to check out the updated Versatility Award
application in the back of this issue too, and see if your Kerry qualifies.
I’m very pleased to announce that the USKBTC is going to include a Stud Dog showcase in
the upcoming Fall/Winter issue of Blueprints. Make plans NOW to include your dog in this
newest stud dog listing. This was actually suggested by a club member searching for a
suitable stud dog for their special Kerry girl. As they so aptly pointed out, if you are unable to travel to lots of shows you don’t always know the dogs available. Please help us
make this one of the best Stud Dog issues ever; the more dogs included, the better this
newest “tool” will be!
As always, we want to get your feedback. We encourage you to send your chapter club

Could Your Kerry “Find It?”

A scattering of cardboard boxes, similar in size, lay on the
training room floor. To the casual observer, it looks like a
jumbled mess. But to the handler and the Kerry by her
side, tail wagging wildly and nose twitching, it is another
chance to play the game: Nose Work!
K9 Nose Work, the newest sport for dogs, is sweeping the
nation. Started on the West Coast in 2006 by three very
experienced professional trainers (Ron Gaunt, Amy Herot
and Jill Marie O‟Brien) who, themselves, trained and handled dogs to detect narcotics and explosives, this sport is
geared toward companion dogs, young and old, mixed
breeds and purebred, as well as dogs that are shy or reactive. It is a great confidence builder, while helping to calm
energetic dogs. The objective of Nose Work is to have the
dog find a particular scent hidden in a location and then
indicate (alert) that find to the handler. While not physically demanding for dog or handler, it does provide a high
degree of mental stimulation for the dog and lets them
really put their superior sense of smell to work. In addition, it allows the dog to turn the tables and teach the
handler to observe the dog‟s responses and trust the dog‟s
judgment when it indicates that the odor has been found.
Unlike traditional classes, which may be stressful or overstimulating to some dogs, dogs are worked one at a time
in the search area, allowing each dog to focus on the task
at hand and permitting the handler to focus on his/her
dog. Because they are worked individually, dogs that are
reactive to other dogs or people can participate in this
sport without fear of further reinforcing their reactivity.
Behaviors that are not be looked upon favorably in an
obedience class, such as pulling or not focusing on the
handler, are actually encouraged and desired in a Nose
Work class. Dogs that are eager to hunt and show that
eagerness are applauded!
A typical Intro to Nose Work class begins by teaching the
dog what the game is. A few aromatic pieces of food are
hidden in one of 6 boxes stretched out in a line, with the
cover of the boxes typically open. As the dog travels down
the line of boxes, sniffing and checking each one, it is selfrewarded when it finds the targeted box. This is repeated
several times, and then the cover is loosely closed. As the
weeks progress, the loosely closed boxes are scattered,
and the dog is allowed to work off leash in the enclosed
area, with the other dogs safely crated away from the
search area. This also gives the other handlers an opportunity to observe the other dogs as they conduct their
searches. As the dogs become more proficient, the target
box containing the food may be hidden behind an overturned table or boxes may be placed on chairs, both to
encourage the dog to hunt or to encourage them to pick
their noses up off the ground.
The next class level, Into to Odor, is when the food is
paired with the first scent, sweet birch. Birch, for those

who have never smelled it, smells very much like wintergreen – at least to humans! Again, the dog starts off with
the box drill (a line of 6 boxes) and gets a good whiff of
the scent as it self-rewards with the food. As the dog becomes more proficient at finding the scent, the food is
weaned away from the odor. Now the dog is searching for
scent alone, and when he finds it, is given a food reward
at the odor source by the handler. This food reward reinforces the successful hunt! During this entire process, the
handler is keenly watching the dog‟s body language to
learn the cues given when the dog is “in odor.”
Now the real fun begins! The search area moves to interior rooms, vehicles and exterior areas! Again, a small
amount of food may be paired initially, to help the dog
understand that the game is continuing, that only the area
has changed. As the dog becomes more experienced at
finding the scent and the handler becomes better at being
able to “read” the dog, they move into more advanced
classes, even taking those classes “on the road” to other
locations. Dogs are encouraged to be successful in their
searches and corrections to the dog are never given.
At some point, the remaining two odors, aniseed and
clove, are introduced, first by pairing with the birch, and
then working them individually.
Costs for this sport are minimal. Dogs are encouraged to
wear a harness, which will allow them to pull safely (they
also learn that the harness means they are going to play
the sniffing game) and a long line, which allows the dog
freedom to safely move away from the handler, is also
used. If you want to practice on your own, you can buy a
small bottle of the essential oils: sweet birch, aniseed (not
Star Anise) and clove bud; a few Q-tips which you have
cut in half and stored in a small glass jar and scented with
a few drops of the essential oil, and a metal tin with a few
holes poked in it, and conduct your own searches. There
are also complete kits available for purchase online.
Nose Work trials have been held on the West Coast since
2008, and the first New England trial was held in Massachusetts this past May, with another planned for the Fall
2010. The dog and handler must both be registered with
the National Association of Canine Scent Work
(www.nascw.net) to compete; it is a one-time registration
for the dog, but the handler must renew his/her registration each year. In addition, prior to competing, the dog
must have passed an Odor Recognition Test (ORT), which
indicates proficiency for that odor. Titles can be achieved
in this sport, with an NW1 title for the target odor, birch,
an NW2 for the target odor, aniseed, and an NW 3 for the
target odor, clove. As expected, each level of competition
involves more complex searches.
An actual trial consists of the dog searching all 4 venues: a
box drill, an interior search, a vehicle search and an exterior search – successfully complete all 4 and your dog will
be awarded his title! In addition, special awards are given

to dogs and handlers indicating their proficiency and
teamwork in a search venue, and there is also a special
award given to a rescue dog, even if it didn‟t receive a title!

My late Kerry, Duffy (Wildside‟s Quiet Man UD RE) and I
started training for this sport in January 2010. Sadly, I
lost him 6 months before the first trial was scheduled in
our area. The joy he exhibited when the harness came out
clearly indicated his love for the sport. I started my young
Kerry girl, Lexi (Calix Worth the Wait) in training late last
year, and she passed her ORT for birch in January 2011.
She exhibits the same enthusiasm and determination,
and, as we travel the Nose Work road together, I have no
doubt she will do well also. Other Kerries are training for
Nose Work as well.
The first Kerry to be titled in Nose Work is Meggity Meggity Meggity Meg, a 12.5 year old Kerry who is also has
agility titles in AKC (MX, MXJ, OF, OAP, NJP, NFP),
NADAC (OAC, NJC, NGC) and USDAA (AD) and does
therapy work in her „spare‟ time with her owner, Carolyn
Allen. This California Kerry was awarded her NW1 title in
October 2010 and is currently working towards her NW2
title.

My wonderful journey of life with a Kerry
Blue started on May 30, 2009, when I picked
up my puppy from the breeder, Youlia Anderson (PennTerra's KBT). Since I am already
active in
performance
events with
my Rottweiler, I knew
this puppy
would also
be participating in activities when
she got older. I love
doing the
sports with
my dogs
where their
breed isn't
the typical
breed you
see participating. I do weightpulling with my
Rottie boy and Bean is also a weightpull dog
in training. I decided to look for another
sport where Bean might also be the first in
her breed to be titled and I looked into dock
jumping. With the Kerry being the all around
working and retrieving dog for the farmer, I
thought this would be a good fit. I contacted
the local club, Keystone DockDogs, because I
wanted the proper introduction and foundation work since I knew I'd be competing with
Bean. I was told there was a member who
put some time in at a nearby dog pool to help
with newbies in the sport and I was put in
contact with him. He was excited to see a
Kerry getting involved as he had never seen
one competing.

just for a positive experience with no pressure. I put a life vest on her and let her run
around and play. Even just standing in the
water was praised, and nothing was rushed.
It must be FUN for the dog. In the beginning
it's just play, play, play. Place the toy in front
of them and LOTS of praise if they pick it up.
As they get more comfortable in the water
and with their toy, tossing it a little farther
will eventually have them retrieving it. As
the toy gets farther out, the dog tends to rush
in the water with some splashing in the excitement to get the toy. This is the start of
teaching them that a splash is fun and part of
the play. Picking one particular toy for this
game (and it is a game for the dog) and it being used for ONLY this game is important.
By doing this, eventually the dog will get super excited just seeing the toy because he
knows what is about to happen and then it
only takes a little toy play to get them revved
up while in line at competition.
Once Bean was swimming and retrieving, it
was time to introduce her to the dock. It is
very important not to rush them jumping off
the dock, they have to want to jump. In competition, pushing, tugging, or yanking the dog
is not allowed so it is important that it not be
done in the beginning to potentially shut
them down. When I first attempted to ask
Bean to jump, I engaged her with some play
with her

her up.

A Word from Charitable Funds…
As many of you know the US Kerry Blue Charitable Fund was established in 2002. Its purpose was to
serve the Kerry Blue Terrier in four important areas:
1) Rescue Fund – this fund supports grants used to provide Kerry Blue Terrier rescue services.
2) Health and Genetics Fund - this fund makes grants in support of research in areas of health and genetics of particular importance to the Kerry Blue Terrier.
3) Education Fund – the education fund supports education of all those interested in the Kerry Blue Terrier including publications, websites, and seminars.
4) General Fund – donations to this fund are used to support the work of the other funds through internal
grants to those funds. Undesignated gifts will initially be held in this fund.
Since the Fund was established we have worked diligently to build the assets of the Funds while undertaking major support of the PNA Research being done at the University of Missouri. To date we have awarded over $20,000 in grants to support Health and Genetics, Education, and Rescue. This is quite impressive, since our Fund is relatively new compared to other Parent Clubs whose equivalent organizations are
often decades older than ours.
Our current objective is to continue to grow fund assets while undertaking occasional substantial support
such as the PNA Grant. We believe the real key to long term growth will be planned giving that includes
the Funds in the wills of our members. Other comparable organizations have used this method as the key
to growing their assets. The reality is that we must grow our financial resources substantially in order to
having a meaningful impact and that means it will take many years to be in a position to have a significant
impact on our core areas.
You can help by considering making the Funds one of the recipients of your estate. In addition, support an
area of interest today. We have grown our asset base through small gifts and that will be crucial to our
future.

AN OLD DEBATE

As you already know, Charitable Funds has four funds: a general fund; a rescue fund; an education fund;
and a health and genetics fund. I’d like to raise an old issue that touches on three of those four funds.
By the way, before I begin my short epistle I’d like to thank each of you who supports Charitable Funds.
Remember, your donations are tax deductible.
As the title suggests, this is an old debate but maybe it would be good for the breed for us to revisit it
once again. The question is this: should or should not older breeders continue to breed? And, if you believe a breeder can get too old to breed, at what age should he or she quit? Yep, this is opening quite the
bag of kibble.
You have heard that the total number of AKC Kerry registrations per year is dropping, some would say to
dangerously low levels. Given that fact, should we encourage more breeding, including breeding by longtime fanciers who are, um, getting up there in age? Or, should we discourage our senior-golden-mature,
and often leading breeders from producing more litters?
In light of our shrinking numbers here in the States, why would we ever want to discourage older breeders from continuing to breed? Some will say that breeders have an obligation to watch over the puppies
they produce for the life of those puppies. Some say the breeder is the one responsible for retrieving, rehoming, or rescuing each puppy they produce should that puppy ever need assistance, ever. If you are of
that camp in this debate, then at what age would you suggest a breeder is too old to continue breeding?
Let’s say a Kerry lives for 14 years and that a breeder is healthy of body and mind until, um again, 78
years old, does that mean that breeders should quit breeding at age 64? I can hear a few of you barking
and yapping already. You can fiddle with the numbers and argue until you are Kerry blue in the face, but
you’ll find an easy answer.
Is this any of Charitable Funds’ business? I don’t know, but it does seem to me that this question touches on education issues, rescue issues, and health and genetics issues--maybe H&G issues of the breeders
as much as of their Kerries. So, let’s think about all of this, and talk about, and see what we come up
with.
Meanwhile, I’ll encourage long-time breeders to consider having another litter to help us keep
our numbers up. And, then when we oldsters get too old to breed again, maybe we should
consider making our good breeding stock available to young fanciers so that our breeding program doesn’t get lost to the breed when we ourselves cross the rainbow bridge.

The title of Register of Merit shall be awarded annually to the sire that has produced five AKC
champions or four champions and a fifth published AKC titled get, and to the dam that has produced three AKC champions or two champions and a third published AKC titled get.
(This is for a ROM completed between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010)
