Special guests Jack Watmough - PFC, Alan Knight - Author and ex PFC and the Mayor and Mayoress of Gosport with Brune Park students Wednesday 3rd December saw the official opening of Brune Park’s new Library. The evening was a huge success with guest appearances from the Mayor of Gosport, published author and ex-Portsmouth footballer Alan Knight and current Portsmouth footballer Jack Whatmough. The event was well attended by parents, staff and students alike. A number of students were courageous enough to give a speech to a large audience, discussing their reading experiences at Brune Park. All students spoke clearly and with confidence and were a credit to the school. Thank you to everyone for their support. Keegan Carter, Year 10, said of the evening, “I think the night went well. Lots of people turned up and we had many students speaking up about reading.” Colin Farmery, PFC’s PR Consultant said: “As a community club, education is high on our list of priorities. Reading is something to be encouraged and we are sure this new facility at Brune Park will help Colin Farmery PFC PR Consultant do that. ” Miss Milne, Lead Practitioner Takeover Day at Brune Park The Children’s Commissioner’s Takeover Day took place on Friday 21 November 2014. The Senior Prefects and a few School Councillors had the opportunity to choose a member of staff to work with for the day. The children shadowed staff in their daily routine giving them the chance to experience Brune Park from a different perspective. The students had roles such as; helping lead lessons, working on reception, break duties, learning walks and delivering assemblies to name a few. It was a highly successful day and enjoyed by both students and staff. Students quoted “What a great day...I never knew teachers worked so hard”, “It was a privilege to deliver an assembly to younger students”, “It gave me a feel for responsibility and the opportunity to experience things that we as students take for granted”. Thank you to all staff and students who took part. Hermoine Thomas, Caitlin Capocci and Maygen Brown They were excited to help and got involved making a mosaic carriage for Cinderella with mosaic mice to pull it. They also made stars used Jodie Collins taking over to guide people the role of Assistant though the trail. Headteacher Mr Gamble. It was lovely to see them being so creative with an artist’s guidance and during a drama workshop with the Mayflower Theatre team. Although the trail has now ended the carriage is located in the Jigsaw classrooms and all involved are very proud of it. Piano Recital On the evening of Wednesday 17 December 2014, students of Mrs Farley and Mr Morgan, both piano teachers, performed in a Piano Keyboard Recital. Everyone involved played exceptionally well. The audience enjoyed the wide variety of pieces and many new performers showed their faces for the first time. Well done to everyone involved. Megan Bourne and George Elsom, Year 11 Ickle Pickles On Tuesday 9 December Brune Park Community School were pleased to present a cheque of £1000 to Ickle Pickles. The Ickle Pickle Partnership turns gifts and donations from generous people into specialised equipment such as incubators and ventilators to help Neonatal units provide incredible levels of care for ickle pickles (premature babies). The organisation was voted as Hepburn House’s charity for the 2013/14 academic year. This was an area that had impacted on both staff and students in the House. Hepburn representatives Mr Butt - Subject Leader of Geography, Paige Daw and Shola-Mai Kane represented Hepburn in making the donation. Guitar Recital On 24 November a group of Mr Swan’s students performed at the Guitar Recital. It was an excellent display of talent from the performers and a great time was had by all. The concert included a wide variety of styles; Jake Warner’s performance of ‘Drifting’ was amazing! Well done to all those who took part. Christmas Disco Year 7 danced their way into the Christmas spirit at the Year 7 disco on Thursday 18 December. Our new resident DJ played a mix of current hits and Christmas classics. The dance off showed the many spectacular moves of both students and teachers! The tuck shop was a hit and helped quench the thirst after all the dancing. Brandon Grant said, “It was great and we taught the teachers how to dance properly.” Matt Rylance was keen to say that, “The disco was ‘legit’ and better than a night club.” Keenan McDonough especially liked dancing to YMCA. Quaid Fleming said, “I loved the dancing, the music and the teachers joining in.” All in all it was a great start to the Christmas holidays. Jack Elson, Year 11 & Faith Draper, Year 10 Prevent Prevent is a national initiative which aims to stop people becoming radicalized or supporting terrorism. The school has been working with the local Prevent Engagement Officer to provide staff training and support sessions to students in Years 9, 10 and 11. The sessions aim to raise awareness, provide practical help to prevent young people from being drawn into radical groups and to ensure they are given appropriate advice and support. For further information please go to https://www.gov.uk/government/ policies/protecting-the-uk-againstterrorism/supporting-pages/prevent The long and short of it... In December 2014 Danny Sands, Year 11, decided he would like to raise funds for the charity ‘Cash for Kids’. Through getting his mum to cut off his hair from this (top picture) to this > Danny raised a very creditable £202!! Well done! Dance Festival Sell-Out Brune Park hosted the ninth year of the Gosport and Fareham Schools’ and Colleges’ Dance Festival on Tuesday 13 January. Bridgemary Community School, Brookfield Community School, Brune Park Community School, Crofton School, Henry Cort Community College and St Vincent College took part in a sell-out show! Mr Kelly, Headteacher at Brune Park, said, “It was a superb evening and the quality of dance was exceptional.” Congratulations to all who took part in what was a fantastic performance. Cardboard Challenge At the end of last term a group of Year 7s attended the Cardboard Challenge at Portsmouth University, competing against other schools from Portsmouth, Chichester and Fareham. Using only paper, cardboard and fastening materials, the students had to transform a room into a themed grotto with activities. They decided to build a sleigh with one student, Callum Sturman, posing as Santa who visitors could have their photo taken with! It was a festive way to end the school term. The Year 7 students who took part were; Callum Sturman, Caitlyn Mayes, Louie Clarke, Olivia Drew, Alfie Driscoll and Darcey Line. ey h Diff shleig A , lt a Ho Ameli avies, D h a Hann Health and Wellbeing Chloe Vials, Jodie Collins, Lydia Mackett, Jack Elson, Tyler Elson, Jake Warner Ex-Student Profile Lauren Harty 2007 - 2012 I was a student at Brune Park from 2007 until 2012. I loved my time there, taking Resistant Materials and an Environmental Diploma alongside the rest of my GCSEs. After getting my GCSEs, I decided to attend St Vincent College. I took Psychology, Sociology, Science and English Literature and Language. I worked really hard and achieved good marks in the AS level exams. Whilst preparing for my A-level exams I started looking for Universities. I chose Aberystwyth University in Wales doing a Joint Honours in Psychology and Criminology. I gained my place with an A, C and E. I went to University in September 2014 and have enjoyed it so much! It’s weird at first having to be a grown up and do everything for yourself and not have family around but I can’t wait for the next 3 years. In the future I would like to become a Clinical Psychologist. Lauren contacted Brune Park in November 2014 asking for the opportunity to come and talk to our students: On Wednesday 17 December Lauren came in to school to speak to Year 11 students about life at University, what they should be preparing for and expect when they get to college and have to begin the process of UCAS application, her personal insight into how to prepare and make this process easier, and budgeting finances etc. We would like to thank Lauren for her time. Students were inspired by her and found the information she gave them very useful. There is often a strong emphasis on improving the physical health of our students but we are also passionate about improving their emotional health and well-being too, aiming to increase mental health awareness. In PDL lessons, Year 8s are learning about the importance of having high self-esteem. Year 9 are currently learning about depression, anxiety, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and paranoia, whilst Year 11 are being supported in managing stress and anxiety in the lead up to their exams. Two of our teachers in the PDL department were qualified mental health practitioners; we are fortunate to benefit from their expertise. We will be promoting Mental Health Awareness in assemblies and via a display board to all Year Groups during May. You can find out more about this on the website http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk and http://www.youngminds.org.uk/ Danni Crutcher Congratulations to Danni Crutcher, Year 9, who was one of two Runners-up in the Hampshire wide Magana Carta Competition. The competition was to design a plaque to celebrate the Magana Carta in 2015, which Danni completed in the KS3 Art Club. As a winner Danni received a cheque for £30 and will be invited to attend the official unveiling of the Magana Carta plaque on the 10 June 2015, which is to be held in the Great Hall, Winchester. Leadership Trip to Salisbury On Thursday 19 December, the Senior Prefect Team and the School Executives went on a residential trip to Salisbury with Miss Godsall, House Leader Fonteyn and Mr Wickenden, Alternative Curricular Pathways. The aim of the trip was to develop leadership and team work skills. Gingerbread House Competition On Tuesday 9 and Friday 12 December 2014 we participated in the Gingerbread House Competition. On the Tuesday we assembled our readymade house. Katherine decorated the house with icing and sweets and then left the house to set for a few days. On the Friday we finished it off with our own handmade decorations; a snowman wearing a green (Fonteyn House colour) scarf and hat; a Christmas tree and presents; a path and a camp fire. We were pleased with our achievement and happy that we won some House points for Fonteyn. Charlie Jurd, Katherine Owen and Charlotte Davies – All Year 9 3Fall Dance Company Brune Park once again had the pleasure of welcoming 3Fall Dance Company in to school. On Wednesday 21 January, the Chichester University company led two 2 hour workshops with the Year 11 GCSE Dance students. They then performed a fantastic show in the evening. The workshops were full of great choreography and key skills and really showed us what it is like to dance at university level. Jodie Collins, Year 11, said, “It was a fun experience and helped me gain a wider range of movement. Overall I enjoyed the workshop.” The evening performance was simply spectacular, captivating the hearts of many dance lovers watching; a great experience for the students who attended. A question and answer session followed providing information about university and the opportunities available if dance is your passion. Lauren Wright, a current student with the passion for dance, described the performance as, “Just amazing! - I’ve honestly never seen anything like it before! They were all so in time and the African tribe dance gave me so much inspiration for my choreography; so worth watching them dance!” Chloe Vials, Year 11 We undertook many activities which made us consider our strengths and weaknesses as a team. One activity was to cook Christmas dinner for everyone, including the food shopping, budgeting, cooking and washing up. Unfortunately we burnt the stuffing but it didn’t spoil our fun! Phoebe Holt, Deputy Head Girl, said, “The trip to Salisbury was really useful for me, I learnt new skills needed to work in a team successfully and it has helped to improve my confidence.” We also had the opportunity to have a look around Salisbury’s beautiful Cathedral and have a wander around the festive Christmas market. It was an excellent trip. Chloe Vials, Year 11 Take 2 The Drama Department have had another 2 trips this term to Arts University Bournemouth to watch collaborative projects between the Arts University Bournemouth’s BA (Hons) Acting, BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design and BA (Hons) Make-up for Media and Performance students. The Year 9 students who attended ‘No Name’ and the Year 10 students who watched ‘The Rights of Man’ were all clearly moved by these performances, talking and writing notes on the way home for inspiration in the classroom. Student comments from Year 9s included: “Wow, it was so spooky.” “I loved the use of multi-role, it was very clever.” “Can I come on another Drama trip please Miss, it really inspired me.” Comments from Year 10s were: “The set was amazing; I loved the way they used the different levels to show power and status.” “I loved how his costume was used as a symbol for his tragic end.” “The contrast of the black and white costumes and set with the coloured lighting was really effective.” Deano Pickering (Senior Projects Officer - Widening Participation at AUB) commented on both occasions that our students were excellent ambassadors for Brune Park Community School, and they truly were through their engagement, good manners and enthusiasm. Both trips were thoroughly enjoyable for all involved. Year 11 Practice Interviews Jacob Skilton Jacob was looking forward to his interview for the Army with Staff Sgt Eastman, although he did feel slightly nervous. Dracula On Tuesday 25 and Thursday 27 November 2014, 15 Year 10 students took to the stage to perform ‘Dracula’. After many months of hard work the students really impressed the audience with their level of characterisation and their understanding of the dialogue, which was difficult at times. The students were an incredible group to work with: dedicated, determined, professional, enthusiastic and supportive to each other throughout. Well done to the following students: Megan Baker, Phoebe Simmonds, George Wren, Sam Jones, Ryan Bullimore, Owen Cooke, Joey Kabadayi, Skye Marshall, Eleanor Gladman, Bryony Kitchin, Freyja Press, Rebecca Symons, Mia Denny, Megan Crean and Hollie Layton. Owen Sydney Owen was being interviewed for Electrical Engineering by Mr Hutchinson who has an engineering background and is now retired from NATS CTC 4000. (National Air Traffic Services Corporate and Technical Centre) Healthy Living On Wednesday 22 January fifteen GCSE PE students were involved with Brockhurst Junior School’s ‘Healthy Living’ project. Fifty students from Brockhurst School took part in a special fitness circuit that was designed to look at respiratory rate and how to plot a line graph after exercise. All the students at Brockhurst enjoyed the session. Our students were exceptional on the day ensuring the Year 6 students knew what to do at each station and helping them plot their graphs. Well done and thank you to all those involved. Owen has an agreed placement at CEMAST to do a Level 3 qualification and then hopes to do an apprenticeship at NATS. Singing Show Both students had prepared for the interviews as if they were the real thing and felt that the practice interviews were a great opportunity to practice and better their interview skills. National Novel Writing Month Back in October I heard about something known as NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). NaNoWriMo is a challenge where the aim is to write 50,000 words as a novel in one month, November. I decided to undertake this task and I managed to complete it with a few words extra. Through NaNoWriMo I had it published and it is now available to buy, however due to the time restraint there are a few typos. On Thursday 18 December Miss Fisher’s singing students each did a performance of various Christmas songs. What I most enjoyed about the show was the atmosphere and everyone having fun. I can’t wait until the next one in July. Jess Hamer, Year 10 Megan Baker, Year 10 Congratulations! Bronze Award Congratulations to the following ex Brune Park students who are now at university, having left Bay House Sixth Form with good A-level grades: Leah Duery (University of Gloucestershire, Graphic Design) Emily Golightly (University of Kent, Biomedical Science) Sarah Halpin (University of Chester, Law) Zachary Lockwood (University of Portsmouth, Film Studies and Creative Writing) Caitlin Martin (Anglia Ruskin University, Psychology) Alfie Richardson (University of Winchester, Theology, Religion and Ethics) Ruth Robinson (University of Surrey, Biomedical Sciences) Myles Tyrell (University of Southampton, French and Music) Congratulations to Eleanor Mansfield for completing her Bronze level Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
