She collapsed at a summer basketball camp held at a local high school, never regaining consciousness. It was later determined that the cause of death was sudden cardiac arrhythmia. There had been no prior symptoms or illnesses to detect a potential problem. Through generous donations of family and friends, the Lauren E. Brenner Memorial Fund has supported different projects focused on healthy heart awareness and automatic external defibrillator placement. Because of her genuine sense of caring, her positive attitude and constant smile, Lauren touched people’s lives, some of which she never even realized. We continue her legacy as her memory lives in our hearts. 33 34 ALAYNA NICOLE GRIFFIN Alayna Nicole Griffin was born June 23, 1997. She was a beautiful, lively and very independent little girl. From the day she entered our lives, Alayna made sure that life was never dull. She loved to be in the middle of whatever was going on. Whether it was playing dolls with her sister, Kathryn, singing with her brother Ethan or collecting "wormies" after it rained she enjoyed it all. Her enthusiasm for everything that she did was so wonderful to watch. On May 28, 2001, she collapsed and died while playing in the local pool due to Viral Myocarditis. A gaping hole was left in our family and life will never be the same. We will miss her mischievous smile and her love every day for the rest of our lives. Alayna is not here with us physically but she will live on forever in our hearts. We will love her always…..”Alayna Ladybug” My little sister's an angel. Each day she comforts me when I'm sad, And calms me when I'm mad. Alayna blows me kisses through the air, When I am scared. She laughs with me, and we laugh as hard as can be. But the best thing of all, when I need a great big hug, she sends me a ladybug. By Kathryn Griffin (Alayna's sister) 35 36 37 BAILEY ANN OKUN September 28, 1983 - January 31, 1997 “Always in our Hearts” “In a beautiful blue lagoon on a clear day, a fine sailing ship spreads its brilliant white canvas in a fresh morning breeze and sails out to the open sea. We watch her glide away magnificently through the deep blue, gradually seeing her grow smaller and smaller as she nears the horizon. Finally, where the sea and sky meet, she slips silently from sight; and someone near me says, ‘There, she is gone!’ Gone where? Gone from sight.. that is all. She is still as large in mast and hull and sail, still just as able to bear her load. And we can be sure that just as we say, ‘There, she is gone!’ Another says ‘There, she comes!’ Life is eternal and love is immortal; and death is only a horizon, and a horizon is nothing but the limit of our sight.” 38 39 40 Abby’s Run For The Heart When the leaves fall and change color I’ll think of you As the snowflakes cover the earth I’ll remember you When the birds sing and flowers bloom I’ll hear you In the hot summers, when things are dry I’ll picture you At night in bed, I’ll pray for you At early dawn, I’ll wish for you But every moment of every day I’ll always love you § Love, Mima and Papa Abby’s Grandparents 41 42 Dear Abby, As our family gets bigger and bigger, you are missed that much more! Staci passed away on March 13, 2005 from Viral Myocarditis. Staci came home from school on Friday morning not feeling well and by Sunday morning her heart had stopped. Everyone was devastated. No one ever got to say Goodbye to her. In Staci’s 16 short years, she was a Timber Creek High School JV Cheerleader and ran track. She was an honor student and a devout Christian. She kept several journals to record her thoughts and prayers. Staci was very active in the Student Venture program, participated and led many Bible Studies, and was a member of Journey Fellowship Church. She also played the clarinet, and the saxophone in Middle School, and she was a Second Degree Black belt in Karate by the time she was 14 years old. One of Staci’s final bible verses she wrote in her journal was Psalm 73:25-26 “Whom have I in Heaven but You? And earth has nothing I desire but you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and portion forever.” This is exactly what happened. Staci’s heart and flesh failed but God is forever with her. This was written 3 days before she passed away. www. stacistory.com 50 SHANNON MARIE FEDOR JUNE 6, 1983 - JANUARY 18, 1999 Brunswick, Ohio Shannon was a beautiful person. Her smile would light up a room, her gregarious laugh would brighten your day and her gentale spirit would warm your soul. Shannon was truly a blessing from God and we miss her deeply. Shannon was 15 years old when she died suddenly of viral myocarditis. Her death has left emptiness iin our hearts and our lives have been forever changed. Each day we strive to understand this devastating disease. Our search for answers continues. We are thankful to have been blessed with Shannon as our daughter. We will always be grateful for the 15 years we had with her on this earth and we look forward to being reuinited with her for all eternity. “It is better to have loved and lost... Then to never have loved at all.” We love you Shannon... Our “labor of love” could not be so successful without you—sponsors, donors, volunteers, and participants and we are truly grateful for the overwhelming support we continue to receive from this community. While we are often saddened when we hear stories of another child loss to this disease, we remain optimistic as we hear of the progress that is being made by those dedicated to studying the causes, prevention, and treatment of viral myocarditis and sudden cardiac death. Our hope is that Abby’s Run will not only raise your awareness of this tragic disease, but also inspire you to remain as committed as we are to eradicating it. We know that our efforts today will make a difference tomorrow and we appreciate your help with this very important cause. We hope you have enjoyed Abby’s Run for the Heart this year and we look forward to seeing you again next year. Thanks again! The Glaser Family Max, Lori, Sam, Olivia, Grace, Lilly and Lucy 62 THANK YOU SPONSORS We at Abby’s Run for the Heart wish to express our sincere gratitude to all of our 2005 sponsors. Thank You!
