Rocket
Man
by Doug Smith
Lost on Earth
Rocket
Man
has
learned more when he’s
lost than he has when he
knew where he was. And
two recent voyages have
convinced him that he’ll
never, ever, gear up with
one of those pathfinding
devices.
This is not a function
of age or fear of change.
Back when computers
were kerosene-powered he
was the first in his class
to demonstrate to others
how to cope with crashes.
And when, two decades
ago, We Care Transportation introduced global positioning, he was perfectly
content to let some eye in
the sky tell him he was
southbound under the
Peace Bridge and going
too fast. Fair enough for a
dispatch-intense business,
but as for private travel,
forget it. He could decipher a road map since before he took off the training wheels and except for
the refolding, has never
found anything that beats
paper navigation.
Nonetheless, he never
gives directions when co-
piloting and so sat mumly
as his Firstborn motored
south out of central Pennsylvania, about 100 miles
to a playoff game near the
Maryland border. (Would
Garmins have condemned
Mason & Dixon to the unemployment lines?) Anyway, we reached the fork
in the road where the automated tourguide directed
us to go straight and both
of us knew darned well we
should bend toward the
east.
On
she
persisted,
through one narrow street
after the other. At least
we got to observe that
Pennsylvania’s state capital underbelly is no more
distended than our own.
“I can’t believe she’s putting us back on 83,” the
Firstborn moaned a halfhour later as we cut across
three lanes of traffic to the
Interstate we’d abandoned
at her behest.
Somehow, we made
first pitch. But we’ll never
determine why Miss Garmin guided us through the
worst Harrisburg has to
offer. Maybe she’s getting
a kickback from a squeegee man.
A few days later, Rocket Man lifted off from the
Little Booster’s school in
central New York. Funny
how these trips almost
always have to do with
baseball but anyway, he
determined that mapless
and hapless he would try
to negotiate Finger Lakes
backroads to return to
home base.
Only for a moment did
he think, “Boy, I could
do this easy with GPS.”
Navigating only by dead
reckoning and a few street
names he’d acquired over
a decade, he set out. What
an adventure. How else
would he have found Sovocal Hill, the Mennonite
lady who took the First
Mate’s flower order over
a cell phone, the selfserve strawberry stand
that warned “you are being both monitored and
recorded, no switching of
berries, please,” and, finally, the Outhouse Road
By-pass. (Talk about
knowing where you’re going.)
Downtown Harrisburg
aside, GPS may be swell
for getting you where
you’re going, but en route,
you will miss where you’ve
been. The search is worth
time lost. See ya’.

Yes it is time once again
for Family Fishing Day!
The 6th annual Family
Fishing Day takes place at
Broderick Park. Organized

United Front (BUF) it will
be held Saturday and Sunday June 28th and 29th

Family Fishing Day
has been a tremendous
success. Families from all
over the city come to enjoy the angler’s paradise
in our own back yard. The
Buffalo Niagara has some
of the best smallmouth
bass, musky, king salmon,
steelhead, walleye and
lake trout fishing in the
world and Broderick Park
is one of our great waterfront parks.
BUF president George
Johnson is especially proud
of how effective the day
has been in getting urban
youngsters off the streets
and to the nearby waterfront park to do something
new with their friends and
families. “It’s amazing
to see their eyes light up
when they feel that tug on
their line.”
