Annual Report - The Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Chippewa
2013 Annual Report 2013_BGCA_Annual_Report_Spreads.indd 1 6/5/14 8:40 PM WELCOME LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Our Vision Dear Friends of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Chippewa Valley, This year has been a year of tremendous growth and opportunity for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Chippewa Valley. I have been personally blessed to witness firsthand, the triumphs of not only the organization as a whole, but also the triumphs of the members that attend each Club. Within the pages of this annual report, you will be able to view the Club growth, staff and volunteer dedication, as well as Club accomplishments that occurred in 2013. We are humbled by the generosity of so many who believe in our mission and the development of our members. In 2013, the Chippewa Falls Center served just over 200 members, and received our official charter for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The overwhelming response and support from the community of Chippewa Falls has been above what we could have ever imagined and we continue to make great plans for the future as more families participate in our Club programming. The Jackson County Center also experienced remarkable progress in 2013, serving over 200 members as well, and making great strides in the community. In 2013, 81% of our members attended at least two times a week and 66% attended three or more days!! BGCA statistics show that our programs will be more successful if our members come two or more times a week. The Mary Markquart Center in Eau Claire was pleased to announce some new additions to the Club in 2013, which include a new energy efficient walk-in cooler and freezer to support the Meal Program. The new walk-ins allowed the Mary Markquart Center to serve over 27,000 healthy meals and snacks to Club members. In 2013, the Mary Markquart Center also received a new 15 passenger van, thanks to Markquart Motors. The addition of this van has allowed both the Mary Markquart Center and Chippewa Falls Centers to utilize their own van for field trips and member transportation. With the growth and success of the organization across the Chippewa Valley, a steering committee comprised of local leaders has also been established in Menomonie and is currently in the process of bringing a fourth location to that community. A community assessment and feasibility study have taken place in Menomonie to ensure the support and future sustainability of opening a new location. We are so pleased with the progress being made in that community, through the hard work and fundraising of the steering committee and the Menomonie community, the Menomonie Center is on track to open for youth programming at the River Heights Elementary in the fall of 2014. The Boys & Girls Club will become an ongoing community resource to enable young people to reach their full potential, gain self-esteem and become responsible citizens. 2013 Board Officers Terry McHugh, President Deb Fischer, Vice President Bob Briggs, Secretary Mark Oldenberg, Treasurer Craig Olsen, Past President Tony Benedict, VP of Operations Trevor Bohland, VP of Resource Development Lori Hoeft, VP of Support Services Board of Directors Connie Biedron Kris Goetzka Dr. Mary Ann Hardebeck Holly Hart Carl Holmquist Jerry Jacobson Claire Johnson Lee Markquart William Milne Mary Steinke Paul Swartos Our Mission To inspire and enable all youth, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. In December, members in Drama Club hosted parents and family members for the production of “The Year Santa Got Mixed Up.” A total of 18 Members filled various roles including Santa Claus, Elves, and a Narrator. They also worked creatively with staff and volunteers to complete scene backdrops, a stage, costumes, and other props. Men Who Cook Snack and Meal Programs The Snack and Meal Program served 12,356 healthy meals and snacks in 2013. Members received healthy and balanced meals which incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables in appropriate portion sizes. A partnership with Feed My People Food Bank enabled members to participate in a Weekend Kid’s Meal program that provided food for members to take home meals on the weekends. The Chippewa Falls first annual Men Who Cook event was as enjoyable as it was delicious. On Saturday, October 26th, the Chippewa Falls Heyde Center for the Arts was full of hungry guests ready to sample for a good cause. There were 25 celebrity chefs, nearly 175 guests in attendance and rave reviews from everyone who took part in the food sampling. Guests were treated to a unique 20-course meal then given the opportunity to vote for their favorite dishes. With a large variety of appetizers, entrees, soups and desserts such as “Mexican Mac n’ Cheese” or “Summer Shandy Ice Cream” everyone was sure to find something that pleased their taste buds. Power Hour To support their academic success, members received homework help and tutoring daily after school. Club staff and volunteers helped members with many subjects including math, social studies, science, spelling, and reading. During Youth visited W.S. 2013, members completed 917 hours of homework help and and were able tutoring at the Chippewa Darley Falls Center. to spray the hose! Career Launch Week Career Launch inspires Club members to consider their career options upon graduating from high school or college. During our summer program, a special week was dedicated to exploring career fields. The Club partnered with five area businesses for members to tour and gain hands-on experiences. Members visited Northwestern Bank, W.S. Darley, Rooney Printing, Spectrum Industries, and Hubbard Scientific. Special thanks to the supporting businesses and Community Foundation of Chippewa County! Youth visited W.S. Darley and were able to spray the hose! Meet the Members Kevin, 12 Summer Programs Members had a blast at the Boys & Girls Club during the summer months. A partnership with the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District provided fun and educational program experiences to members. Sculptures were created, science experiments completed, and sports skills were enhanced each week. Our first summer program had an average daily attendance of 57 Club members. 4 2013_BGCA_Annual_Report_Spreads.indd 4-5 What I like about the Boys & Girls Club is that it has helped me finish my homework on time. The staff is there to help with my homework when I don’t understand. 5 6/5/14 8:40 PM JACKSON COUNTY CENTER Helicopter Field Trip 2013 HIGHLIGHTS On July 24, Club members had a once in a lifetime experience to tour the Black River Memorial Hospital. The members were lucky enough to view the arrival and the take-off of an Army medical helicopter. Members had the chance to ask the pilot and medical personnel questions. It was a wonderful learning day for the kids! “My favorite part of the field trip was when they took off. When the propeller was spinning, it was loud.” - Vanetta C. Age 9 Lemonade Day On August 9th, the Jackson County Center participated in Lemonade Day. Club members, staff and volunteers had five lemonade stands set up at different businesses and organizations around Black River Falls. This event taught the members how to develop a strong business plan along with the importance of marketing and positive customer service. All Club members worked the stand and had a fun-filled day selling ice cold lemonade. Junior Achievement (JA) Field Trip This summer, the teens of the Jackson County Center and the Mary Markquart Center were able to take part in a two-day field trip to Milwaukee to visit the JA Finance Park. The JA Finance Park is an economics program that introduces teens to personal financial planning and career exploration. On the first day, the teens sat in on the JA Finance Park convention. On day two, the teens were able to visit and tour the University of WisconsinMilwaukee campus. This was a great experience for our teens to learn about financial planning. In addition the kids received a tour of the college campus, which encouraged members to think about their future education goals. Support for this project was provided by the Eau Claire Community Foundation. Lights on Afterschool As part of the national organization, After School Alliance, the Club held its National Lights on Afterschool event on October Youth visited W.S. 17th. The Lights on Afterschool event highlighted the importance of afterschool programming and brought awareness Darley and were ableto local communities. The Jackson County Center teamed up with two to spray the hose! other afterschool organizations to celebrate their programs. Over 150 youth from the Black River Falls community attended Lights on Afterschool. Youth of the Year- Rochelle H. Rochelle was honored as the 2013 Youth of the Year for the Jackson County Center. Rochelle is a leader and a wonderful role model for the other kids at the Club. As part of becoming Youth of the Year, Rochelle was able to spend three days in Madison to take part in the 2013 Youth of the Year Conference. At the conference Rochelle was able to meet other teens and listen to other Youth of the Year speeches. Dinner Program In October, the Jackson County Center launched the new dinner program. This new program gives Club members the opportunity to eat dinner before they go home for the evening. The kid-friendly, healthy dinner is served from 5:30-6:30 p.m. This new meal program is very beneficial to the members who have to stay late at the Club. 6 2013_BGCA_Annual_Report_Spreads.indd 6-7 Meet the Members Jasmine, 14 My favorite thing about the Boys & Girls Club is I get to be with my friends and there are lots of fun activities to do. When I grow up, I want to be a lawyer because I think it’s cool to help out. Nobody I know has done it and I just want to do something different. 7 6/5/14 8:41 PM MARY MARKQUART CENTER 2013 HIGHLIGHTS Taco Bell Foundation Funds College Tours As part of the Goals for Graduation teen program, 50 Boys & Girls Club members made their way to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a look into college life. Club members took a campus tour, enjoyed lunch provided by the University, a special meeting with an admissions adviser, and a guided tour of the State Capitol. Support for this program was provided by the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens. Club Attendance On The Rise Program staff have served an average of over 80 members each day in the fall of 2013, and the attendance continues to rise. The average daily attendance at this time in 2011 was 44 members; which means daily attendance has nearly doubled in two years. Through expanded transportation services, Student Transit brings members from six additional schools in the Eau Claire Area School District. Markquart Motors also graciously donated a new 15 passenger van to improve transportation services in 2013 as well. Grant for Health & Life Skills Programming The Mayo Clinic Health System Foundation in Eau Claire granted the Boys & Girls Club $25,000 to sponsor the “Triple Play” Health & Life Skills program. The goal of the Triple Play program is to improve Club members’ knowledge of healthy habits, increase the number of hours per day they participate in physical activities, and strengthen their ability to interact positively with others and engage in positive relationships. These funds will be shared between the Mary Markquart Center in Eau Claire and the new Chippewa Falls Center, and specialized programming will begin in 2014. Thanks to the support and generosity of the crowd, $44,000 was raised with the match! The money raised will completely fund the kitchen project and allow the Club to continue serving over 27,000 healthy meals. Support for this project was also provided by the Eau Claire Community Foundation and the AnnMarie Foundation. Youth of the Year 2013 Youth of the Year - Mai Ka 8 2013_BGCA_Annual_Report_Spreads.indd 8-9 Mai Ka has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club for nearly four years and was part of the Upward Bound college prep program. Balancing a rigorous schedule of AP classes, a parttime job, and night classes earning her CNA, there is no doubt that Mai Ka is destined to succeed. She was named the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Chippewa Valley Youth of the Year for 2013 and had the opportunity to travel to Madison to represent the Club and meet other Youth of the Year Members from across the state. She is currently a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and plans to become a family physician. KidStock Campaign The very first KidStock campaign was launched in July of 2013, and in just over five short months, nearly $185,000 was raised for the organization! This campaign was the first of its kind for the Club, spanning all four Club communities, and including an online and social media component. Community supporters were asked to “Take Stock in Our Youth” by purchasing shares of KidStock for the Boys & Girls Club. All proceeds from the campaign directly support the programming for the youth in the respective communities. A special thank you to all of the ‘spokesfamilies’ who represented each community for the campaign: Darrin & Kim Senn for Chippewa Falls, Cody & Molly Filipczak for Eau Claire, Chad & Amy Bloczynski for Jackson County, and Tom & Barb Johnson for the soon-tobe Menomonie Center! Also thank you to the Club’s Board of Directors, campaign sponsor WESTconsin Credit Union, and all of the community members who made an investment in the youth of our community! Meet the Members Deloris, 17 What I like about the Boys & Girls Club is that you get a lot of support and it is fun to hang out with little kids. When you are feeling down you have a lot of support and the kids look up to you like a role model. My dream is to be a daycare provider to help little kids and give them someone to look up to. 9 6/5/14 8:41 PM 2013 HIGHLIGHTS Female 661 49% 56% 52% 1% 15% 1% 1% 1% 44% ART ARK RY M MA 203 51% Served 1,067 total Boys & Girls Club members in 2013.
