e GOAL News Print Edition The Official Monthly Publication of Gun Owners’ Action League - Protecting Your Freedom Since 1975 May 2013 Dedicated to Education, Safety, Training, and Support of Massachusetts Firearms Owners MA. Legislators Go To The Range With GOAL Event Continues As A Great Success - Hands On Education For All. MA legislators and staff in attendance at Gun Owners’ Action League’s 5th Annual Firearms Safety and Education Day continues to grow. 2013 Firearms Safety and Education Day for MA Legislators and Staff were surprised by how well they performed. This year, for the first time GOAL incorporated a Scholastic Steel portion to the event which was run after lunch and open to all in attendance, for many it was their first exposure to shooting sports competition. GOAL ran the “go fast” stage with the 4 rectangles and the round stop plate at center. Everyone that attended had a great time, the legislators and staffers were cheering and high fiving every time a new, best time was posted, they loved it! 5/10/13 Once again Gun Owners’ Action League’s (GOAL) 5th Annual Firearms Safety and Education Day for MA Legislators and their staff was a huge success. GOAL invites every MA legislator to attend and has seen a significant increase in attendance every year. As a matter of fact, Jim Wallace, GOAL Exec. Director reports that the day is often the topic of discussion in the MA state house year round and especially in the weeks leading up to, and following the event. State Rep. Denise Andrews getting some trap shooting advice. She did great! After a safety briefing by GOAL Director of Education Jon Green the attendees were sent in groups to the skeet range, the trap range, the pistol range and the rifle range where they received instruction for each discipline from GOAL’s experienced volunteer instructors. At each range the participants were given hands on instruction which introduced the shooting fundamentals of safe firearms handling and marksmanship. They were then assisted in loading and firing each firearm, with a focus on the fundamentals; proper grip/stance, sight alignment, and trigger pull. Many attendees had fantastic results and GOAL awarded the top three shooters, times were: Dave Murphy 2.75 sec, Bruce Hall 2.71 sec, Erik Hoskins 2.60 sec. GOAL will definitely incorporate this into the event going forward, it was hugely popular and generated a great amount of interaction amongst the participants. Also of note, House Minority Whip George Peterson asserted himself as top gun at the State House via his win in the informal Legislators Trap Competition, congratulations George! For the first time at our Legislators FSED we ran an informal Scholastic Steel Pistol Competition (timed steel target shooting) that turned out to be incredibly popular, here’s our winners, pictured from L-R. Tom Yost of Smith & Wesson, Dave Murphy, Erik Hoskins, Bruce Hall, GOAL Exec. Director Jim Wallace, GOAL Director of Education Jon Green Thanks to Smith & Wesson, Kahr Arms/Auto Ordnance, Remington, the NSSF, Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, North Leominster Rod & Gun Club and all of the volunteer instructors for making the day possible. GOAL Launches FID/LTC Delay Survey Effort to Reform Process Underway! 5/10/13 Once compiled by the GOAL staff, these forms will be presented to MA Legislators at the State House by GOAL Executive Director Jim Wallace as evidence which perfectly illustrates the need for reform. Have you experienced a delay of 40+ days during your LTC/FID renewal process? GOAL News Print Edition 4 May 2013 From the Executive Director By Jim Wallace - GOAL Executive Director Time for Mature Discussions, not Witch Hunts Fresh from the NRA Annual meetings in Houston, Texas one thing was very clear from the outset, the war of words were already being written before the speeches began. The anti-civil rights shill machine had already made up its mind that we NRA members were a heartless group of radicals that must be silenced at any cost. Ironically, the same media pundits that call for political minority superiority are now trying to label NRA members as a minority representation of the American voters....apparently now it’s a bad thing to be a minority group according to the media. Wish they would make up their mind. The bottom line is that gun owners from every walk of life are motivated by freedom and patriotism and are more than willing to use their own money, voice and votes to protect and pass on the greatest heritage established around the world. Our opposition is motivated by fear, fear for their supposed safety, fear of us and perhaps most all fear caused by lack of knowledge and education on the subject. The latter is the fear that has most caused great problems in societal issues throughout the ages. For over a century now we have been taught the fear of the unknown often leads to prejudice and bigotry. In any case 85,000 freedom loving Americans flocked to Houston over the course of just three days. Perhaps what aggravated our opponents the most is that tens of thousands of people all came together and no community organizer had to buy them a bus ticket and a free lunch. Of course that statement alone will probably get me labeled a racist, bigot or something similar. The fact is the diversity scene at the NRA convention and sheer numbers could never be matched by our detractors. Let’s see Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer put on a three day conference where average working class folks had to pay to get to and attend major ticketed events. More than likely their speeches would not be heard over the noise of the crickets chirping in the back of the empty hall. In early American history this was played out in the infamous witch hunts and trials that were the result of unexplained deaths, so-called afflictions and other matters of fear. This led to hysteria where the common uneducated people demanded action and answers and leadership responded to demands by creating an evil to persecute in order to satisfy the mob. Early officials were more than happy to create a system of “background checks” to establish who was a witch. Most of these checks would inevitably lead to the persecution and ostracization of innocent citizens. Many ended in the death of the person being “checked”. is and has. Nonetheless, proposed national licensing and check system that would mirror the Massachusetts system very easily result in unwarranted labeling and persecution. Rather than weed out the truly dangerous, the decade and a half long system is designed to weed out the suspected unsuitable, a very distinct difference not easily dealt with by the citizens on the receiving end. How does one explain to family and friends that you have been judged as an undesirable, unsuitable person after never having been convicted, or even accused of a crime. People who are not familiar with how lawful gun owners are mistreated find sound bites like common sense laws and background checks that would keep violent people and the mentally ill from supposedly obtaining guns very reasonable. Would they still agree if they had sat in on the same meetings I have attended? In recent months I have had government officials and academics both tell me when it comes to restricting the rights of citizens, they are more than fine with being wrong fifty percent of the time if it means increasing public safety. This means that our government is fine with persecuting one innocent person for every guilty person...wow! The Admittedly, modern gun licensing academics that support this are and background checks themselves eagerly accepting a failing grade. are not lethal, although the resulting Would they pass and celebrate a inability to defend oneself certainly student that got half of everything Advertise In GOAL News Print Edition! wrong? That could explain why certain studies coming out of academia don’t pass the smell test, but let’s leave that for another day. I have to believe that all Americans would be repulsed by the idea that licensing and background checks would be designed with a fifty percent fail rate as acceptable. The old term “good enough for government work” simply is not ok when it comes to separating us from our civil rights. If the government were denying social security, welfare or immigration at a fifty percent fail rate the screams of the denied would be heard on every major network. There would be community organized marches, protests would most likely erupt into violence, and property damage would occur until demands were met. Ironically, as demonized as we are, that doesn’t happen when gun owners protest. If we are to be successful in a national discussion to improve public safety then the witch hunts must stop and education must begin. An informed discussion is the best way to avoid prejudiced mistakes and poor decisions. From the endless ridiculous statements made from our adversaries it is clear they know absolutely nothing about firearms or firearm safety. For, that matter it is clear they don’t know much about how to keep the public safe either … see border security for example. Should the other side be willing to end the witch hunt and actually begin a discussion we should begin that with a tremendous effort to educate them, that is should they be willing. Gun owners should remain vigilant in protecting our civil rights and informing the public on the real issues at hand. One additional statement about socalled “compromise” that our opponents continue to use. The definition of that term is: “An agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions.” What part of any proposal regarding our Second Amendment Civil Rights has the other side made a single concession? That would mean that we would get something we don’t currently have … so much for compromise. GOAL News Print Edition 5 May 2013 From the Editor By Mike Sweeney The day our freedom died. Like many Americans I sat glued to my television watching the Boston terrorist manhunt unfold, I followed the action interactively, watching my Twitter feed, listening to the Boston P.D. scanner online, and most of all, watched it live on a variety of the Boston area TV stations which somehow seemed to be out in front of the big national news outlets. many of the citizens, locked down in their homes, a good portion of which are most likely anti gun, or at the least most likely voted for a politician that is and wondered, “How do they feel about guns now?” The voters of the Commonwealth have time and again voted as a majority to send anti gun legislators to congress, and all levels of state positions, overwhelmingly supportWhile sitting, watching the images ing candidates who have pushed for come across the screen of cocked gun control on both the local and and locked - armored up SWAT national level. “By default, suppressing our Second troops, riding around on armored Now, here they were, disarmed by vehicles all I could think of was the Amendment Rights has caused infringement their own doing and getting dragged video game “Call of Duty, Modern upon others.” out of their homes at gunpoint. The title of this article is taken from a newspaper headline, in the future. This future can be a decade away, perhaps two or three, but it is inevitable if gun owners remain complacent. In light of recent tragedies the proponents of the “government knows best” policy decisions and complacent media have sewn a web of lies in an attempt to convince real Americans that their so called common sense gun proposals will have an impact on crime. They make these claims even as crime rates have plummeted in the past decade while the right to carry a firearm has soared nationally. As I have written before laws designed to punish law abiding citizens make for an excellent talking point on Sunday morning, but imprison honest people that run afoul of them, perhaps by walking in a “gun free zone” while carrying. One may ask how I can make the claim that magazine limits, “assault weapon” bans, and universal background checks are political. Simply put, they are political because so called assault rifles are used in the commission of less than 2% of gun crimes. They are political because criminals obtain their firearms overwhelmingly through illegal means including theft and cross border trade. They are political because requiring a man to transfer his father’s shotgun to his grandson without government permission becomes criminal and serves purely to start to eat away at the shooting sports one regulation at a time. As has been said by Barry Snell of the Iowa State Daily, gun owners suffer “death from a thousand cuts” when it comes to the diminishing state of our rights in Washington. Two major news headlines that scottmalkasian owner failed to compete with the media maelstrom surrounding the Newtown or Aurora theatre shootings showcase the real culture war behind firearms. Ask anyone about Jared Loughner, James Holmes, or Adam Lanza and they will be able to tell you their age, where they lived and at least a few details about their lives. But does anyone recall Nick Meli? He certainly has not become a household name. Meli carried a concealed firearm and upon hearing shots fired in a mall drew his firearm and confronted the shooter. Unfortunately two individuals were killed prior to Meli’s heroic actions but ultimately the assailant turned his firearm on himself after being confronted by an armed citizen. Had he had the opportunity to continue his massacre without being challenged the violence and carnage could have been far worse, but the headline much more attractive to CNN, MSNBC and the like. These scenarios are actually not all that rare. If one peruses Google it is easy to find dozens of accounts of citizens with firearms stopping potentially tragic mass killings. The media for whatever reason does not find these stories in line with their politics, agenda, or viable news stories. Secondly, weeks ago a “flash mob” descended upon the famous Magnificent Mile shopping district in Chicago and attacked pedestrians and shoppers. The real kicker in this is that I am referencing the most recent assault, which occurred in late March not August (as was briefly covered when it occurred). The media has now blamed the heat for the first assault (only a viable excuse for the August attack), lack of afterschool activities, and lack of com- munity funding, et al but NOT the youth who committed the crimes. In the culture war it appears that it is impossible for the individual to be responsible for their actions but rather the community for some sort of failure to accommodate. Interesting how this logic ends when ideologies clash; the same luxury is not afforded law abiding gun owners that run afoul of the laws by accident. I highlight this case because not only did we hear very little from the news about Chicago’s growing violence problem but because it is also a city where citizens are not allowed to protect themselves, even in a time where the police have publicly claimed that they will not investigate a crime unless the suspect remains on the scene. Folks, I cannot make this stuff up. I challenge the President, Congress, and even our own lawmakers here in the commonwealth to explain how the changes I have outlined will do anything to INCREASE Mass killing sprees, and even if they do not decrease them, at least we acknowledge that citizens have an equal right to defend their own lives as police officers do. We frequently get phone calls and emails about what an LTC/FID holder needs to do should their name change, here’s the info: “I’ve gotten married. How do I go about changing my name on my LTC?” This is a common question we get here in the GOAL office. The procedure is fairly simple. Name changes must be submitted to the licensing officer in the town where the license was issued. The licensing officer contacts DCJIS and they will make the change in the system. DCJIS does not provide reprints for name changes, however, the new name will be in the system and will populate and print correctly upon renewal. This rifle turned out to be a great teaching tool for the legislators and staffers in attendance as it showed how an AR platform rifle is simply a semi-automatic rifle, functionally the same as any other. It was great seeing those in attendance listen, learn, and enjoy shooting this rifle. Thanks again to the crew from Smith & Wesson for all of the help!
