Blocks of high rise apartments standing in the small island are one of the features of Gunkanjima and are a rare find in the world. The island's name was derived from the exterior of the island that resembles the battleship "Tosa." The statue's raised right hand points to the sky to symbolize the threat of atomic weapons while the horizontally-raised left arm symbolizes the city's wish for peace. The closed eyes of the statue symbolize prayer for the repose of the atomic bomb victims. In addition, materials displayed in the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum show the threat of atomic weapons and the miseries of war, and at the same time strongly express the value of peace. Built through missionaries from France in 1864, this church is the oldest wooden gothic church in Japan. The church interiors are also adorned with stained glass dating back to 100 years. It was built in 1634 by MokusuNyojo, a monk and the temple master of Kofukuji, and it is Japan's oldest stone arch bridge to date. "Spectacles Bridge" is designated as one of the important cultural properties of Japan. The festival shows its pride of having more than 370 years of history and tradition. It is said that the festival was referred to as "Kunchi" (9th day) because it was celebrated every 9th of September in the lunar calendar. However, the celebration is currently held from October 7 to 9 every year and has been designated as an important intangible cultural property of Japan. During the celebration, the city is bustling with dancers and shops.
