2009 Annual Report
A year of transition and progress
2009:
A year of transition and progress
It’s hard to believe that more than forty years have passed since
Walk-In opened its doors. Since that humble beginning serving
alienated youth, Walk-In has established a national reputation
for being the largest counseling center in the country to use
professional volunteers exclusively to deliver its counseling
services. Thanks to the dedication of 160 volunteers who share
their expertise with both clients and colleagues, Walk-In serves
more than 1500 clients each year. And the demand for services
is increasing.
“Our foundation has a track record of funding mental health in a
range of settings and for a spectrum of populations. Walk-In is
a unique player in that world because its expertise isn’t about a
specific therapy or population. Its expertise is about a specific
moment of crisis and giving access to people when they are in that
moment. That’s a rare, if not unique, commodity.”
Joel Luedtke, Program Officer
Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation
But the value of Walk-In Counseling Center isn’t about numbers.
It’s about delivering consistently high quality service over the
long term, nimbly changing as needs change. Walk-In’s successes
truly showcase this commitment. When the struggling economy
resulted in an increase in clients, volunteers responded with
passion and commitment. In a year when many nonprofits
experienced significant decreases in support, Walk-In’s donors
stepped up with generous gifts and grants. In a year of transition,
Walk-In’s board of directors maintained steady and forwardthinking leadership, resolving to maintain and grow rather than
reduce capacity.
The result is a stable organization taking the steps necessary to
expand and serve growing numbers of people in need across
the Twin Cities region. We embrace the challenge and thank our
partners for their encouragement and support.
We are pleased to report that during
2009 Walk-In:
yy Served significantly larger numbers of clients who
walked in for help, an increase of ten percent over
2008 and 23 percent over 2007
yy Increased the number of volunteers from 149
in 2008 to 160 in 2009
yy Increased individual giving by 3.8 percent and
foundation grants by 13 percent
yy Increased the number of individual donors from
515 in 2008 to 776 in 2009
yy Reviewed our counseling services model and
possible enhancements
yy Studied community mental health needs and
opportunities to increase collaboration with other
organizations to better meet those needs
yy Developed a plan to expand consultation and
training services
yy Began the process of hiring a new executive director
“It’s important to have different ways to help people.
Walk-In is the place where people can actually come in.
They don’t need an appointment or resources, and they
can benefit from a counselor in real time, face-to-face.
Sometimes the ability to sit down and talk to somebody is
the right method -- meeting people where they are with
the kind of help they need.”
Dave Therkelsen, Executive Director
Crisis Connection
Walk-In celebrates 40 years
Nearly 200 Walk-In volunteers, supporters and friends gathered on Friday, October 9, to mark Walk-In
Counseling Center’s 40th anniversary. The reunion showcased four decades of service and leadership
through a video, personal reflections and story telling. Executive Director Gary Schoener, former office
coordinator Linda Sue Anderson, and former director of consultation and training Jeanette Milgrom
shared experiences. Myra Barrett and Harry Brull, long-time Walk-In volunteers and supporters,
presented Walk-In’s vision for the future and asked attendees to donate to Walk-In’s important mission.
Board President Bruce Bobbitt expressed greetings from the board of directors.
Whom does Walk-In help?
Walk-In serves a varied clientele with diverse backgrounds,
cultures and experiences. No one is turned away. In a
given year, Walk-In’s doors are open to welcome:
yy Uninsured
yy Unemployed
yy Low income
yy Families in crisis
yy Couples with relationship issues
yy People with alcohol and chemical dependency problems
yy People who have been physically or sexually abused
yy Homeless people
yy Veterans and their families
yy Young adults and students
yy People with privacy concerns
yy Gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people
yy Older adults and elderly
yy Refugees and immigrants
yy Torture victims
yy People of all ethnicities
Gary Schoener and Bruce Bobbitt extended a heartfelt thanks to the organizing committee - Phil Oxman,
Carol Mollner, Carrie D’Andrea, Deborah Luther, Martha Hughes and Linda Valerian for their hard work
and contributions of time and talent.
Phil Oxman, event co-chair, said it best, “This celebration demonstrates to everyone that we are strong
and looking to the future.”

Sam Sher recognized in 2009
One of Walk-In’s founders, Sam Scher, has been recently
recognized for his contributions to the field and community,
receiving this year’s Minnesota Psychological Association’s
highest award. Sam was one of the first psychologists to enter
private practice in Minnesota, some 50+ years ago. Over the
years, he has been active in the community, volunteering
with many organizations and serving as role model for many
Minnesota psychologists. We congratulate Sam for his
leadership and service!

“I like to transform space, making it nice and cozy on a
shoestring. I’ve enjoyed helping Walk-In renew space
because I believe strongly in its mission. Walk-In gives
people in a troubled situation a place to go for help. I
know people who can’t afford to get help. That’s just
wrong. I’m volunteering to make Walk-In comfortable
and welcoming for its clients and volunteers.” (Shotsie
Forsythe volunteers her interior design sense and
resources to help update and refresh the house on
Chicago Avenue. Her work includes the team room/
library, the first floor bathroom and some of the lower
level counseling rooms.)

“As the demand for Walk-In’s services
increases, we are responding. We are
building leadership on the board, in the
staff and among the volunteers. These are
the people who will shape our future to
serve the greater Twin Cities region. They
deserve our gratitude and our support.”
Thank you volunteers for giving time and expertise.
2009 Counselors
Pang Chang and the volunteer
receptionists welcome Walk-In clients
and respond to phone inquiries. They
are the first “faces of Walk-In.” As an
integral part of the service, they are
the ones who often see the immediate
change in clients.
“What I love about being at Walk-In is
being a part of a process that helps
people get through traumatic times in
their lives. It’s a place where people will
be greeted with compassion and a smile. It’s a place they can feel comfortable
and safe.” Pang Chang, Walk-In Office

< Reflections
Gary Schoener, Executive Director (1973 – 2010)
From the first meeting of Psychologists for Social Action in
the winter of 1969 through the early 1970s, I was a young graduate
student exploring new ways to be a psychologist and help the
community. Walk-In was on the cutting edge of change, serving
alienated adolescents and developing new approaches to drug abuse.
This led to involvement in creating the Free Clinic movement and
input to the U.S. Senate about alternative youth services. At the
time I was a consultant to Elliot Richardson, secretary of the U.S.
Department of Health, Education and Welfare, the drug abuse
section of the U.S. Office of Education, and the Special Action
Office on Drug Abuse Prevention in the Nixon White House. But
Walk-In was growing, so in 1973 I gave up my role as community
coordinator and became executive director.
In 1975 Walk-In was chosen as a national model by the Joint
Information Service, National Association for Mental Health and
American Psychiatric Association. In 1977 Walk-In became the only
recipient in the Upper Midwest of the Gold Achievement Award in
Hospital and Community Psychiatry, the highest award in the field.
In the mid-1970s, Walk-In pioneered the move to address issues
of professional misconduct and sexual exploitation. Over the
next three decades we achieved international recognition leading
to presentations around the world, a book, two international
conferences in the Twin Cities and countless public appearances.
Along the way, we helped develop counseling for gays and lesbians
and authored language in the Minneapolis Civil Rights Ordinance

protecting people from discrimination
based on sexual orientation.
We sponsored early work on child sexual
abuse, and we helped develop the early
police-community collaborations to
reach troubled youth.
In the 1990s we began working with torture survivors and refugees,
producing a film to teach people how to assist refugees. We helped
organize collaborations between drug abuse and mental health
programs. I still chair the Council of Mental Health Programs in
Hennepin County.
For those who wonder why I stayed so long, it had to do with
three things:
1) collaboration with many fine people on the staff, board and in
the volunteer force – a richness that would be hard to equal; 2) the
ability to do what needed to be done – to bring about community
change; and 3) the ability for me to be consulting with and training
people from thousands of other programs and endeavors – a neverending learning experience. I received more than I ever gave in terms
of stimulation, learning, examining new ideas and seeing change
take place.
Moving ahead to focus on consulting and training makes me happy
as a clam. That was my original role and the one I love.
I think it’s the thing I do best.
I’ve known of Walk-In since I became executive director of
what is now Crisis Connection 30 years ago. I have great respect for
Walk-In’s philosophy and how it does the work. Walk-In provides
essential services with no red tape. Clients walk in the door, and they
get the help. That attracts my attention – the immediacy of the
services.
The Walk-In position intrigued me because Walk-In works outside
the medical modeI where services are frequently unavailable or
difficult to access by people who most need the help. I have a lot of
energy for this. Smaller nonprofits like Walk-In have a huge role to
play. I love making it happen for nonprofits with fewer resources.
As I consider the next few years, we need to maintain the mission
and integrity for which Walk-In is known and respected nationally.
We also have a lot of new work to do. The board of directors has
developed a strategic plan that suggests Walk-In expand its services
through collaboration with partner agencies. To advance this vision,
we will have to strengthen and diversify funding that supports
both what we’ve done in the past and the new vision. I also want
to deepen our presence in the broader community, becoming more
diverse to reflect the diversity of our clients.
I want to make sure that Walk-In is known more widely for innovation
in service strategies, volunteer skills and availability to clients and
professionals. I want Walk-In to be “the” place where new professionals
come to enhance their skills, where mature professionals come to
contribute to the next generation and where retiring professionals
come to share their wisdom and continue their service.
Given the expertise in our volunteer ranks, we should also be
developing cutting edge treatment models and evaluation
mechanisms that enhance and ensure the ability of each individual
to use his/her strengths to overcome challenges. We will be a
learning organization, seeking and welcoming feedback from clients,
volunteers and community, paying attention to what’s going on
“out there” and integrating it in what we do and how we do it. We
should be trying new things, incorporating what works, laying aside
what doesn’t work and always learning from the experience.
This isn’t going to be easy. Fortunately, we have outstanding
directors, dedicated staff, talented volunteers, a growing donor base
and an intellectual foundation second to none. This will allow us to
continue to respond to changes in the economy, social circumstances
and newly identified issues. We know demand will grow, so we will
have to work hard to find the resources we will need to thrive.
My ultimate goal is to do more for more with more. Being part of
an organization with such long-term, uncompromised integrity and
depth is wonderful. I welcome the challenge and the opportunity.
