Any male can be a father but it takes someone special to be a loving and supportive dad.
Dads are becoming more vocal about taking a
strong role in the lives of their children.
Whereas a decade ago it was somewhat unheard of, today it is possible for fathers to be
awarded sole custody of their kids. This article is written to prove that African American
men are present and engaged fathers who
love their children. Most media sources re-
port that the majority of African American
fathers are locked up and tuned out, low on
education and high on weed or too busy getting busy to get a business of their own.
Even with the discouraging imprisonment
rates which state that 600,000 African American males are behind bars. There’s also another stat which is rarely reported, there are
367,000 African American males enrolled in
college, according to the National Center for
Educational Statistics. Even though there are
a large number of African American men imprisoned, there are others who are present
and engaged fathers who love their children.
Some imprisoned fathers are engaged with
their children as well. We would like to bring
the African American fathers to the forefront
and salute them not only for June (Father’s
Day) but throughout the year. We want to
dispel the thought, which a lot of people
have, is they just don’t care, but we know
they do. We see how a lot of dads are
fighting against the odds to be engaged in
the lives of their children.
Below are some facts to show African American fathers involvement with their children
hopefully, this will shatter some myths about
African American fathers:
 More African American fathers live with
their children (2.5 million) than live apart
from their children (1.7 million).
 78.2% fed or ate meals with their children
daily, compared with 73.9 percent of white
fathers;
 70.4% bathed, diapered or dressed their
children daily, compared with 60.0 percent of
white fathers;
 82.2% played with their children daily,
compared with 82.7 percent of white fathers;
 34.9% read to their children daily, compared
with 24.9 percent of white fathers;
 40.6% helped their children with their homework or checked to make sure that they finished it daily, compared with 29.3% of white
fathers.
 Of the fathers who live away from their children, African American fathers outperformed
white and Latino fathers on nearly all measures
surveyed, including reading to their children
daily, helping them with homework and changing their diapers.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to all the men who are
doing what comes natural to them, mentoring
and nurturing their children. The Kitty Kat
Social Club didn’t have to look far to display
some awesome fathers near and dear to us, see
the pictures below.

SUMMER JOBS
A young person’s first job brings more than just a steady paycheck–the experience teaches young people life and work skills
that serve them long after the job is done. Summer is a critical time for young people to get access to first jobs that can provide important skills, experiences, and networks for their future.
Whether it’s more chores at home or a part-time job, summer gives just about everyone something new to do. There is little
that is more valuable or exciting for a high school student or college student than the different work experiences which are
available during the summer. A summer job helps to pay the bills and is often a necessity, but it also provides our youth with
the opportunity to learn new skills, meet people from different cultures, and perhaps travel to interesting far-away places and
to get a taste of what working life might be like in a future career. Summer employment allow our youth to explore opportunities both locally and across the U.S. Summer jobs are everywhere for those willing to put in the work to find them, and now is
the time to start searching for the extra income source that will fund your summer fun and future.
Many students are getting ready to finish up high school or college classes and are looking forward to three months of summer
fun. If you're interested in making some serious cash to fund that summer fun, below are some great summer job ideas. To
help find clients for the entrepreneurial jobs, create flyers and post them at local businesses, send out a mass email to family
and friends or advertise at local schools before the school year ends.
Tutor: Parents of younger students often work to schedule
tutoring sessions for their kids during summer break. If you
are gifted in math, English or any other school subject, summer is a great time to earn extra money by tutoring.
Lawn Maintenance: If you have access to a lawn mower
and some basic lawn care tools, a summer job cutting lawns,
trimming bushes and doing basic landscaping could be just
the thing for you. Partner with a reliable friend if you're looking to increase your business and distribute flyers in the
neighborhood that advertise your lawn-care services and keep
your contact information.
Babysitter/Nanny: Summertime means school is out for
younger kids as well as older kids; that leaves many parents
in need of nanny services as they head out to work. If you
are responsible, safety conscious and like working with kids,
being a nanny might be right for you.
Housekeeping: Housekeeping businesses as well as individuals looking to keep their homes clean often seek out summer
help from students. If you have high standards when it comes
to cleaning, a housekeeping position for a home, hotel or
business office complex could bring in some extra summer
cash.
Golf Caddy: Many local golf courses are looking for golf cad- Pet Care: Pet care jobs can involve various responsibilities.

have caddy positions available this summer.
Car Washing: The great thing about having a car washing
Camp Counselor: Do you like working with kids and love
and detailing business is that you can have clients bring their
being outside? If so, working as camp counselor could be
vehicles to your home, or offer to do onsite washing and deright for you. A job as a camp counselor will help you develop tailing at their resident. Be certain to have all the supplies

out.
Retail Sales or Grocery Store: If you like working with
people, a job in retail sales or at a local grocery store might
be just the thing for you. Positions ranging from cashier and
stock person to assistant manager are often in high demand
during the summer months.
Food Service: Food service jobs offer great opportunities to
beef up your people skills and bring in good money. Fast food
restaurants have a variety of available jobs such as cashier,
wait staff, host or hostess or line cook. Apply at local sit-down
restaurants.
Beach Jobs: One of the most popular summer jobs is a lifeguard. Working as a lifeguard requires certification at most
beaches, but the benefits are often well worth the effort of
obtaining a certification. If you're looking for a summer beach
job with a little less responsibility, many beaches offer jobs in
the food service areas or doing beach cleanup.
House Painting: Many home painting businesses and real
estate owners will happily hire teens and young adults to
work with them to paint both interiors and exteriors of homes.
If you have a knack for being detail-oriented and like to paint,
check the local want ads for summer painting jobs.
Computer Tech Help: Do you know a lot about cleaning,
repairing and/or updating computers? If so, you can spend
your summer giving clients' computers a good cleanup.
Bike or Small Engine Repair: If you've got a knack for
small engine or bike repair, spread the word.
Window Cleaning: A squeegee, some rags and a good
cleaning solution is all that's needed to clean windows on
most one-level homes. You can offer indoor, outdoor or both
as a part of your window cleaning package. Stick with onelevel homes, for safety reasons, unless you've got the proper
supplies to stay safe at higher levels and insurance to cover
any falls.
Internship: Many businesses offer paid summer internships
for local students. Approach businesses that specialize in your
career interests and ask about available summer intern positions.
Start Your Own Business: Everyone has skills they can
utilize to start a side business. Make a list of your marketable
skills and determine a way that you can turn those skills into
an ongoing business that can help you earn money whenever
you wish.

Father's Day Fish Bowl
Decorate an empty container to look
like a fish bowl. Draw and cut out several fish. The fish will be used as
“coupons”. Write messages on them
such as "Give Dad a hug", or "Bring
Dad a snack." Coupons and the messages can vary according to the age of
the children. Give this to Dad on Father's Day. To make it even more fun
let the kids do the "fishing." Fun craft
and gift all in one!
