Liz Nagy P ENDOZI L OG W E S T BA N K YAC H T C L U B words from the WheelhOuse Commodore’s Report A llen McLeod was a charter member (1962) of the Westbank Yacht Club and was instrumental in the beaching, and the reconstruction of the old Pendozi car ferry into the clubhouse that we have today. Allen was the first Commodore (1964) of the ‘new’ clubhouse. Allen spent an enormous amount of time at the Club and was always enthusiastic about the welfare of the Club. Allen & his wife Pat tried to attend the Sailpast every year and were extremely appreciative of the hospitality supplied on Robert & Chris Klaus’s boat “the monarch”. Allen was also a huge source of historical information and many articles in the Log, over the years, were supplied by him. While he had not been able to attend any functions in the past few years due to his illness, he will always be remembered with great respect for his contributions to our Club. Please remember that the AGM will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. and it would be great if all members could attend. This is the evening that members can contribute with their vote to the ongoing maintenance of the Club. It is very important to have your vote. As this is my last log report, I would like to say how proud I am to have been part of the the directorship of this Club and to be a member of this, the greatest Yacht club in the valley. Tom Stephens Commodore A big thank you goes out to everyone who made it out to get the ship in shape for winter. We knocked off a good number of jobs with the help of the following: Dave Johnston, Mike Delaney, Martin & Linda Gerard, Diane Olson, Bryan Feagan, Stewart Boswell, Tom Stephens, Jackie, Colter & Kim Blonarowitz, Gerry Krause, Bruce & Laurel Parsons, Detlef Bruckner, Hazen Clarkson, Nick Simone, Dan Magas, Sandi & Darrell Bellamy, Darwin Harmon, Peter Yarmak, Thom Hannah, Bill Ostaficiuk. If we have missed anyone on this list we are truly sorry. This is my last report as Staff Captain. I have greatly enjoyed working alongside the other Flag officers, Directors and all of the volunteers who have contributed many hours throughout the year. I thank all of you for helping me perform the duties required by the position. Many hours of thought and preparation go into events and issues that we deal with together as a growing club. On Oct 14th we heard of the passing of one of our clubs-founding officer’s, Commodore Allan Mcleod. I did not know him personally however do know that his efforts and enthusiasm for the WYC were very instrumental in building the Vice Commodore’s Report O ctober has slipped by so fast, Just barely finished up the activities of September and it is almost November. I want to take the opportunity to extend my thanks to all the great members of the WYC who made an effort this year to share their time with the club through volunteer activities. Sometimes we (club members) are so busy with our day to day tasks, that maybe we forget that others are working behind the scene to make the social or recreational parts of our lives a little easier or a little more fun. Maybe next time you are at the club turn to a member near you and say thanks for being a part of this club. foundation for all the members of the WYC. Without his work and foresight we would not have the club we enjoy today. Our sincere condolences go out to the family. As the Club continues to move forward I remind all that the AGM will be held on November 16th at 7:00 P.M. Please be sure you also contribute by taking part in the elections of your new officers. I look forward to seeing you all there. Martin Gerard Staff Captain commodore. This year has gone by so fast, thanks to Tom and Liz and all involved that made it so simple a task. Gayle and I attended the Penticton Yacht and Tennis Club commodores ball on Oct 23rd. The hospitality of the Penticton club was as always above and beyond. Thanks to Fred and the crew thanks for the great time. The AGM is just around the corner I ask that all the members mark the calendar and attend this very important meeting. It has been a great year due primarily to the support I’ve received from a few key players that bare mentioning: Rob McBride: without Rob the bar simply would not run. He manages the inventory, takes care of the staffing and calmly deals with anything we throw at him – all with a smile on his face! Thanks Rob for your support. Tony Grzegorzewski: he has become a fixture behind the bar, backing Rob up, handling the drinks and making the perrrrfect martini! Keep up the great work Tony – I wonder what the new Bar Director’s favorite drink will be??? Terry Jaggers: many of you probably don’t realize but Terry takes care of the heavy lifting – literally! He brings in the supplies so that we are sure to have your favorites. My back thanks you Terry. Of course, my list wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t thank our loyal patrons. I really appreciate how you have tried to help us move the lines quickly, demonstrated patience when things haven’t been running as smoothly as we hoped, and diligently sign into the club book. Keep on coming down and showing your support for your club. Cheers! Lisa Neilson Bar Director Page 7 P ENDOZI L OG W E S T BA N K YAC H T C LU B THE TOAST PA RT Y The Salvation Army Needs Help! OF THE The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers for their Kettle Campaign over the Christmas season and have approached us. We require 3 to 6 people from the club to volunteer 2 hours of their time. If more people volunteer you could drop your time down to 1 hour each. Now is the time to make Christmas wine! They would provide a sign on the kettle stating “Westbank Yacht Club Helping the Salvation Army”. Sounds like a nice charitable thing to do. If anyone is interested and can spare a couple of hours in helping out this great cause, please contact me for further information. 1789 Ross Road Liz text gaurd 250-769-6625 bleed crop West Kelowna, BC www.westsideubrew.ca Richard Montgomery Lawyer 410-1708 Dolphin Ave. Kelowna BC V1Y 9S4 T-250.980.3361 F-250.868.9011 [email protected] Business Law Page 8 Real Estate Wills, Trusts, & Estates P ENDOZI L OG W E S T BA N K YAC H T C L U B remember that the bar is open Thursday evenings and not much is happening there – perhaps a good time to practice your billiards skills or to just enjoy a few pleasant moments with some friends. It was a beautiful day for working around the club. The long list of jobs were all checked off and a few additional jobs were done as well. I’m sure everyone enjoyed the delicious Turkey Pot Pie dinner. Congratulations to the lucky volunteers who won the Sun-Rype juice. Special thanks to the Anchor Club and all of the hard working members who came out to help prepare the club for winter. Great Job! There are still a few members taking advantage of the beautiful fall boating weather. If you are still out there enjoying the peaceful lake please do so carefully. When you pull your boat out for the season please take your ropes and spring lines with you. The WYC Annual General Meeting is on Nov 16th. This is your chance to have your voice heard and to elect your new Board. Thanks for all of the Outdoor Maintenance support over the past year. I know Darwin Harmon will do an excellent job and I wish him tons of luck next year. The year was very successful with an amazing New Year’s Eve party organized by Rita & Mark DeCew. The Olympic theme was perfect and everyone had a blast participating in the various games. Our Newcomer’s party, complete with live “horses” enjoyed the races planned by Dave Johnston. Kevin Jones was a strict Marshall and the function was well attended. Many thanks to Brian & Sandy Jamieson for organizing the Lobster night, yum, yum. They always do an excellent job. Also, thanks to John & Gayle Hudson for organizing Rib’n N Blues — another yum, yum. The golf tournament was a rainy day but didn’t dampen our member’s spirits. We had 48 golfers and were well fed at the club enjoying prizes, which Darwin had organized (along with Sue’s help). All in all, the help I received this Come down to the club for some fun! There are darts, pool, ping pong & other games available for your use. Gelcoat and fiberglass boat repairs Custom made swimgrids and dock boxes Minor scratches to major insurance claims welcome. P a g e 12 year was fantastic. I can’t explain how appreciative I am of everyone’s involvement & support. As a relatively new member I learned lots & met new friends. Tom is a supportive, helpful & caring Commodore and I enjoyed working with him & the other board members. Ed & I will be in Calgary in November & will not be attending the AGM, sorry to be missing this important event. Please attend & vote for the new board.
