Boone County Public Library (BCPL) is committed to
supporting early literacy and education in Boone County.
BCPL supports children’s intellectual, social, emotional, and
physical development by designing learning environments,
experiences, and materials that encourage family
involvement and complement and enrich academic content.
The Library provides many young children with
opportunities they may not otherwise experience unless
they are enrolled in structured early care and education
settings. BCPL provides all families and caregivers with
resources that help lay the foundation for lifelong learning.
The role the Library plays in supporting older students
and teens during the school year and the summer
months also cannot be overlooked. Boone County Public
Library recognizes the increased demands placed upon
schools, teachers and students in the pursuit of academic
excellence and provides year-long programming to support
literacy and learning across an array of subjects. This
document outlines some of Library’s activities in support of
schools and parents from School Year 2013 – 2014.

n Grant-Funded Summer Reading/Free Lunch Initiative
Since 2011, the Library has partnered with Boone County Schools to provide healthy meals and
expanded learning opportunities to children under the age of 18 in the city of Florence. The
collaboration is supported, in part, by grant funds awarded through the Institute of Museum and
Library Services and the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. During the summer
months, children can enjoy stories, games, fun activities, free books and food.
n Library Subscription to TumbleBooks and
TumbleBooks Cloud:
TumbleBooks are online animated talking picture books that help children discover the joy of
reading. TumbleBooks Cloud is an online collection of read-along titles for school-age children,
which features adjustable text and audio narration. From August 2013 to June 2014, 69,939
students and teachers accessed TumbleBooks online and 3,231 students/teachers accessed
TumbleBooks Cloud.
n “Core Connections” Curriculum Kits
BCPL staff developed three curriculum kits for integration into the Boone County Schools: 3rd Grade
Economics, 5th Grade Government, and 8th Grade Earth Science. These kits contain literature and
materials to enhance the core curriculum and the common core standards.
n Library Services for Students with Special Needs
Library staff present weekly and monthly sensory storytimes with adjustments for sensory sensitivity
and special needs children. These storytimes were attended by preschoolers and elementary school
students with their families. Tactile, visual and audio components are all part of the sensory storytime
experience.
n Library Subscription to Access Video
Many teachers take advantage of the Library’s subscription to Access Video. This service provides
thousands of streaming nonfiction educational, independent, and instructional films and
documentaries.
