L’adjectif
L’ordre des adjectifs. On place le plus près du nom l’adjectif qui indique la caractéristique
la plus essentielle, la plus permanente, la plus objective.

La préposition qui suit éventuellement l’adjectif. Il faut savoir avec quelle préposition se

Most people predicted child tennis prodigy
Jennifer Capriati would win her first Grand
Slam in the 1990s — not a decade later. But
Capriati became one of sport’s most highprofile cases of teenage dillusionment and
burn-out. However she has hauled herself
back into tennis’ spotlight to claim her first
Grand Slam title — crowning one of the
greatest comebacks in the game.
After a remarkable Australian Open final,
in which she swept Martina Hingis aside
6-4 6-3, Capriati said: “I believe it, but
then I can’t believe it at the same time.
From here on I will always have the belief
in myself that I can do anything and
won’t be afraid in any match that I go in.”
The triumph also cemented a reunion
with her father-coach Stefano. Capriati
ran to hug her father to share her special
moment after firing a backhand return
winner to take the championship. “I
wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him. I
don’t know if I could have done it with
any other coach. He’s helped me in my
game so much. Today he was looking on
more as my dad than as my coach.”
Stefano basked in his daughter’s great
sporting achievement after all that had
gone in the past. “It’s this question of desire and will and she has all this,” he said. “It came back
to her. She lost it for a while, but it’s now back in her and I hope it will last for a long time.
She has worked real hard for this.”

We’ve seen them on TV and the local playing
fields: overbearing parents so over-involved
in their children’s sports that they undermine
growth and performance. Consider the plight
of 17-year-old Australian tennis sensation
Jelena Dokic. Not only did officials eject her
father from a Wimbledon warm-up tournament for shouting at officials, but he was also
arrested “for his own safety” after he lay down
in traffic and jumped on the hood of a car.

Nothing perhaps underlines the contrasting styles of these two events more than
the news that the prelude to this year’s
women’s singles final at Flushing Meadows
will be Diana Ross standing on the court

a children’s gospel choir.
At Wimbledon the two finalists walk out
unheralded*, carrying bouquets, at 2pm
precisely, followed by a dressing-room
attendant carrying their rackets – and then
bow to* the Royal Box.
Of course the tennis remains important but
clearly in the view of the United States
Tennis Association, it is not enough.
That must have been part of the thinking
behind the appointment of Arlen Kantarian,
the former boss of Radio City Music Hall, as
chief executive and presentation supremo.
Kantarian says he wants the Open to be
recognized as one of the top five events in
the world and not just among sports events.
He insists that he wants people to see it in
the same light as the Super Bowl or the
Academy Awards.
For example, those starring during Arthur
Ashe’s Kids Day tomorrow will be 14-yearold Lil Bow Wow, a rapper since the age of
nine, now ‘‘one of music’s hottest acts’’, and
O-Town, the group born out of the television reality show Making The Band.
“We’re getting more creative in what I’ll
call side shows*,” said Kantarian, who has
also been instrumental in the installation
of giant video screens at either end* of the
Centre Court to show replays of key points
and news from other matches, which may
appeal more to spectators in the upper level

Want to hear an even sadder story? Gymnast
Dominique Moceanu became an Olympic
gold medallist at the ripe old age of 14, while
ignoring a painful four-inch stress fracture in
her left leg. “Who is looking out for this
child?” ESPN sportswriter Mark Kreidler
wondered at the time. At 17, Moceanu asked
a judge to declare her a legal adult so that she
could free herself from her parents (former
gymnasts who had nursed gold-medal dreams
for Dominique since her birth). After a very
public battle, she won the right to choose her
own coaches, control her own money and lead
her own life.

“The Williams sisters have done as much as
anyone to market the sport in that way.”
So when the tournament begins on Monday,
the US Open will be a two-week cacophony
of noise, hype*, colour and the constant flow
of spectators at every changeover to the hot
dog, popcorn and beer stands. The idea of
that happening at Wimbledon is ghastly
and yet it is absolutely right for the environment and the culture here.

Pour mieux comprendre l’anglais parlé (radio, télévision, conversation à laquelle on ne
participe pas), il faut apprendre à anticiper et à se concentrer afin de repérer les
informations clés, même si l’on ne comprend pas tout. Face à un interlocuteur, les choses
sont bien plus faciles (on est aidé par la situation, les gestes, on peut demander à son
interlocuteur de parler moins vite ou de répéter, etc.).
Lisez le dialogue sur le rappeur Lil Bow Wow et écoutez attentivement les réponses pour trouver
les renseignements manquants.
