In last month’s newsletter, I posted information about
a change in Rainbows and Sonbeams format to happen in January. Due to scheduling issues, we will not
begin our new format of Rainbows and Sonbeams until
February. The trail format will set apart the Rainbows
and Sonbeams time as a deliberate time of spiritual
formation, quite different than the information emphasis of our Sunday morning Master Class or Music and
the Master’s programming. We will be trying a curriculum that is called “The Way of the Child,” published by
the Upper Room Ministries. It will be structured
around reflective centers that change with the church
season so it will broadly follow the flow of the liturgical
calendar.
This is in response to hearing from several Rainbows
and Sonbeams teachers, as well as parents of those
children using the program that there are concerns
that this valuable time is not being used to its poten-
V i s i t o r
S o n b e a m s
tial. The program has been in existence a long time
with very good intent; but it is time to reevaluate the
program and define anew the goals for this precious
time that we have with the children.
This will be very different than what Rainbows and
Sonbeams has been for a while. However, knowing
that children have very busy lives and that there is not
a time set aside for worshipping and being present to
God in the scope of the current children’s experience
at Church of the Master, it seems a valuable effort to
create this time and space to provide age appropriate
ways to allow children to develop the tools that open
themselves to God.
There will be an orientation meeting with parents of
children in Grades K-3 from at 7:00 p.m. Thursday,
February 5, in the Senior High Room. Please plan on
attending.

It’s almost a new year, we have new songs to sing, and
we would like new friends to sing them with! If you
have thought about coming to Music and the Master,
but haven’t done so, now is a great time to come!
We’ve been wanting to get to know you. If you used to
come, and haven’t been back this year, now is a great
time to come! We’ve really been missing you. If you
came once or twice and never got back, now is a great
time to come! We’ve saved you a place in the choir
and a chair at the table. Come and make some new
friends or catch up with the old ones. Cherub Choir is
for children ages 3 through Kindergarten, along with
an adult, and Junior Choir is for the first through fifth
graders. We hope to see you at 5:30 p.m. for fellowship, singing, and dinner. There is no better place to
be on a Thursday! January 8 will be our first meeting
of the new year.
If you have any questions about children’s choirs,
please contact Miss Kitty at 447-8045. God loves you
and I love you. Miss >^..^<
In January, we will tuck in for a movie and game night
at the church of Saturday, January 10, from 6:30 p.m.
—9:00 p.m. Please bring your favorite snack to share,
computer game or game system or an appropriate
movie to vote on. We will have use of the computer
room and the Movie Theater. RSVP [email protected] by January 8 and let me know what
electronic support for your game hookup you need me
to provide. See you then!

United Methodist camps offer children and youth great
new experiences and give them unique opportunites to
learn and grow in their faith. The Education Committee is excited that Church of the Master is supporting
famlies of campers by giving scholarships to those going to camps this summer. Scholarship funds will be
disbursed equally among child members and children
of members (18 and younger) who are registered for
camps by April 1. Funds will be given as rebates for
registrations fees paid to the camps.
Look for upcoming information about visits from camp
representatives, who will have lots of information and
can answer questions about particular camps and
camping experiences.

Church of the Master has been invited to join
with Central College Presbyterian Church for a
comprehensive cardiovascular health program
for six consecutive weeks starting Tuesday, February 17, 2009 through March 24, 2009 from
5:45 P.M.-8:15 P.M. The program will be held in
Ballard Hall at CCPC. Cardiovascular disease is
one of the leading causes of death in the United
States. Cardiovascular Health & Wellness has
been held at over 80 congregations in Franklin
County over the past 13 years. This program
combines a spiritual emphasis while addressing
key risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Participants are encouraged to examine their own
lifestyle issues to increase wellness of body,
mind and spirit.
The sessions include:
♦ Six unique educational sessions addressing
cardiovascular risk factors offered by experts
in the field (nurses, doctors and specially
trained instructors)
♦ A catered heart healthy meal at each session
♦ Blood pressure, Weight, Body Mass Index,
Cholesterol and Glucose readings
♦ A half hour exercise at each education session geared to all fitness levels
♦ Individualized Lifestyle Profile Report
♦ A health manual to facilitate the participant’s
organization of health related information
♦ Six and twelve month follow-up sessions for
re-evaluation of blood pressure, lab work and
lifestyle profile.
All of this is available for a fee of $15 for the entire program, which also covers the cost of the
health manual.
manual
In 2009 take charge of your own health and see
that positive changes made in high-risk behavior
can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of diabetes, stroke and cardiac arrest. If you have
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me
and prayerfully consider taking part in this opportunity. Registration will begin Sunday, January 25
at church.

I’m God. Today I will be handling all of your problems.
Please remember that I do not need your help.
If the devil happens to deliver a situation to you
that you cannot handle,
DO NOT attempt to resolve it. Kindly put it in the
SJFTD (something for Jesus to do) box.
It will be addressed in MY time, not yours.
Once the matter is placed into the box,
DO NOT hold on to it or attempt to remove it.
Holding on or removal will delay
the resolution of your problem.
If it is a situation that you think
you are capable of handling,
Please consult me in prayer
to be sure that it is the proper resolution.
Because I no not sleep nor do I slumber,
there is no need for you to lose any sleep.
Rest my child. If you need to contact me,
I am only a prayer away.
Although I have the first two lines of this printed out
(hung in my cubicle at work), I did not realize there was
more to the piece until I found this in a Parish Nurse
publication.
May you have a Blessed New Year.

BRING A FRIEND TO CHURCH:
CHURCH On Christmas Eve, we are asking
everyone to bring a friend with them to services. This could be a
family member who does not attend, single parents, a widow/
widower, an un-churched friend down the street, or co-worker. Or
if you know children who are un-churched, invite them to the 5:00
p.m. service. We will have a special keepsake gift for every family
that joins us.

BEGINNING HANDBELLS ARE BACK! Have you wanted to try
handbell ringing? Did you get a chance to ring in September and
would like to do more? Well, we’re back with beginning bells part
2. On Thursdays, starting January 22, we’ll be doing handbells for
beginners and newer ringers at 5:30 p.m. We will meet in the
South Balcony for a 30 minute rehearsal. All interested folks are
invited from middle school age and up. Can’t read music? It’s
not as hard to learn as you think. For more details, contact Kim
Hoessly at 326-3095 or [email protected]. Ring in the
new year!

I greet you as the new "senior" Lay Leader of Church
of the Master. I know I have huge shoes to fill after
the last few years of leadership. I look forward to the
challenge and ask that you join me in both prayer and
practice as we begin this year together.
One of my duties is to recruit Liturgists for each Sunday's traditional worship service. I have heard that
there are people out there who would like to be included in this responsibility but have never been
asked. Please contact me! The book that is prepared
by Pastor Todd and Michele makes it very easy to fulfill this task. And it is a different perspective viewing
the congregation rather than being a part of it!
A second responsibility is to plan Laity Sunday. Our
last few years have been outstanding. This past year
we learned that Church of the Master responds unbelievably well to a challenge, or perhaps it should be
called a focus. My focus this year is the Scholarship
Fund recently established by Church of the Master. (I
will include more information about that next
month.) I will be lifting up through either personal
appearances, or articles in the Visitor, some of the
L e a d e r
young people (well, some will not be quite so young)
who have been greatly inspired and encouraged by
being a part of our congregation. Through the Christian Education program, the youth involvement, the
personal encouragement, the modeling of Christian
lives, and the feeling of being included in a circle of
love many of our young people have found a direction
in their life. Whether it is full time Christian service
professionally, or full time Christian service in their profession, Church of the Master has made a difference. What I would like to focus on is adding the dimension of financial assistance to those who need it to
make their dreams come true. You may see some
faces that you haven't seen for quite a while. You may
hear some music that you haven't heard for quite a
while. You may be remembering some relationships
you haven't thought about for quite a while. And you
will be impressed by what your nurturing has meant to
these sisters and brothers in Christ. I hope it is a year
of enlightenment, enjoyment, and development of our
scholarship program.
