GEM AWARD NOMINATIONS
In its tenth year, Roush Honda and Westerville Parent
Council have partnered to present the GEM Award Program (Great Educator Mentor Award). This distinguished
honor is given to a community member, a volunteer, a parent or district/building faculty and staff member who makes
a difference in the lives of students at each building and/or
the Westerville School District as a whole. Students are
not eligible to receive this award. Winners will receive a
beautiful glass etched trophy and will be honored at a
Board of Education Meeting in May.
Please take a few minutes to let an individual know how
special they are to a particular school building or to the district by completing a GEM Award Nomination Form.
These forms will be available at each school building in the
near future.
All nominations for Emerson Elementary or for the district must be returned to the appropriate building no later
than February 7th. Nomination forms are going to be sent
home in Friday folders. Applications will also be available
in the office. Or you can download at
www.westervillepta.org. A district nomination can be
dropped off or mailed to WPC District GEM Committee;
936 Eastwind Drive, Westerville, OH 43081. Winners and
their nominators will be notified by U.S. mail upon the
completion of the selection process. Questions? Please

District Monitoring National Flu Outbreak
School nurses and other Westerville City School District officials are aware of and continue to monitor a potential widening national flu outbreak. We have a tremendous professional relationship with local health departments and look to their expertise and guidance when such health matters arise.
To date we have no reports of unusually high student or staff absences due to the flu or
other illness. We hope everyone is able to stay healthy by taking preventative measures
that also help us maintain a healthy school environment. Our school buildings are cleaned
using products that are proven to kill viral and bacterial strains of various diseases, including the flu. Frequent and thorough hand washing is important as it remains the first
defense against the spread of the flu and many other infectious diseases. Our staff will remind students to wash their hands while reinforcing other general personal hygiene measures for staying healthy.
Adults and children should also cover their nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve during
coughing and sneezing. Used tissues should be discarded immediately. Most importantly,
avoid contact with persons who are ill. We encourage families to become familiar with
the possible signs of the flu and to seek immediate medical attention if anyone begins exhibiting any flu-like symptoms. These symptoms may include fever or chills; cough,
runny nose and sore throat; fatigue, body aches and headaches. Some people may experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Our goal is to maintain safe and healthy school communities, so it is important that students and staff who are ill stay home from school. Families are urged to contact their
child’s principal or school nurse as soon as they become aware of any physician confirmed contagious infection so the school can take the appropriate preventative
measures. Additional resources about the flu are available through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at
http://www.cdc.gov/flu.

>eDay Lessons and information
The State of Ohio offers school districts an on-line option for
making up calamity days in excess of the 5 permitted in Ohio Revised Code. In August of
2011, our Board of Education passed a resolution in support of using this option for up to 3
days of calamity closures (calamity days 6, 7, and 8). The resolution, which gained the approval of the Ohio Department of Education, states that the on-line lessons will be developed
by and graded by our teachers in the same manner as all classroom lessons.
Students without Internet access will be provided an opportunity to complete the lessons
when schools reopen. We are excited about utilizing this make-up mechanism, which we are
calling e-Day, as it will assist us as we explore the potential of on-line learning that is currently available to students, teachers, and parents. Additionally, this option will allow families
and staff to maintain their planned events should make-up days be necessary.
n the event that the Westerville City School District needs to utilize an e-Day, lessons will appear below ordered by grade level. Lessons will not be published until an eDay has been
issued.

Snow day?
WCS has new policy regarding our volunteers. In an effort to have an abundance of
caution when it comes to our students, we will now have a volunteer form that will be
filled out for all volunteers. If you work in the classroom (under the supervision of a staff
member) you are considered a level 1 volunteer. If you work with small groups or one on
one with a student, you are a level 2 volunteer. Level 2 volunteers will need to make a appt.
at the Early Learning Center to get fingerprinted. There is a 50 dollar charge for this which
is set by the BCI. I realize that this makes volunteering more complicated, but it is a
necessary practice to establish in our district. It is all about keeping our children safe.
