Welcome to
Headlam Hall and
our first Wedding
Magazine
Since the 17th century Headlam Hall
has looked out over the picturesque
rolling countryside of lower Teesdale, a
hidden gem just waiting to be
discovered. In 1978 my parents opened
Headlam Hall to its first guests and
since then it has been sympathetically
improved and enhanced including the
addition of the exclusive-use Edwardian
Suite, a stunning spa and a lovely golf
course. Today it enjoys an excellent
reputation as one of the region’s
leading venues thanks to the fantastic
setting and dedicated team of staff with
continual improvements to keep the
facilities up-to-date.
Over the years we have built a wealth
of knowledge and experience when it
comes to hosting wedding receptions
and civil ceremonies so we understand
both the traditions of this special day as
well as the importance of current
fashions to make your wedding relevant
to your time. We have always had a
policy of only hosting one wedding a
day at Headlam as we believe that such
an important occasion deserves
exclusivity and our undivided attention.
I believe that Headlam Hall holds an
inherent romance and charm within
both the walls of this historic building
and the walls of its beautiful gardens
which are a wonderful feature for
weddings. I hope that this magazine
conveys some of the magic we have to
offer and we are delighted to share
these pages with some of our most
trusted partners who can help to make
your perfect day.

Why choose Headlam Hall for your special day?
Located in the rolling countryside of
lower Teesdale, just seven miles west of
Darlington sits the picturesque hamlet of
Headlam. This quiet corner of Teesdale
is where you will find the superb 17th
century Headlam Hall Hotel & Spa. This
four-star Jacobean manor overlooks its
own rolling farmland estate, standing in
four acres of walled gardens with
elegant lawns, ancient beech hedges,
colourful herbaceous borders and
flowing waters.
The impressive Edwardian Suite can
accommodate up to one hundred and
fifty guests and is a unique room
characterised by its huge arched glass
ceiling which gives a bright garden
feeling to afternoon receptions. The
Hall’s elegant Drawing Room can
accommodate up to forty guests and
opens onto the stepped terrace
overlooking the grand main lawn. Civil
ceremonies can also be held in both
rooms, and in the Stable Lounge.
Headlam Hall will make a superb choice
for your wedding, and as an
independent family owned business, it
has a core philosophy of offering
individual and personal service that is
re-enforced by the policy to only host
one wedding a day.
The food at any reception is of the
utmost importance and at Headlam the
quality remains the same whether
dining for two in the restaurant or a full
house in the Edwardian Suite. The
experienced team of chefs have
received numerous awards including 2
AA rosettes, Taste Durham Highest
Quality assured and Local
Champion awards.
The hotel lends itself very well to both
smaller, intimate weddings and larger,
lavish occasions. Let’s show you round:

comfortable accommodation for any of
your guests wishing to stay overnight
and the fabulous ‘Gainford Suite’ is
perfect for the Bride & Groom with its

Spa with its stunning design, therapeutic
benefits and indulgent spa therapy
(more about this on pages 10 & 11).

INSPIRATION
The date has been set, the venue
booked and now it’s time to start
planning. In need of some inspiration?
Linda Jane Westphal guides you
through all the latest trends
It’s all about you this season. The latest trends continue the
revolution in wedding planning that places the focus firmly
upon creating a truly bespoke occasion which celebrates your
style and personality and delivers the ultimate wow factor.
As experienced wedding planners, we understand the choice
on offer can sometimes seem overwhelming so our wedding
team have picked out the key looks for the wedding 2015/16
season. Their ‘at a glance’ guide to the season ahead is full of
ideas, inspiration and insider ‘know how’. So pour a glass of
fizz, read on and let the planning commence…
Dreamiest dresses
Swoon worthy gowns are big news. Luxury and elegance are
major trends, so channel Downton or the Great Gatsby. The
runways were awash with higher necklines featuring intricate
lace and detailing and fabulous backlines for the wow factor.
Backlines were either dramatic drop or open backs filled with
heavily adorned illusion panels featuring hand beading and
sequins. Dresses are all about detailing this season with all the
major designers showing gowns adorned with pearls, beading
and sequins for a chic, vintage effect.
Lace is everywhere as is colour. Think softer hues of blush, rose
and bubblegum. The big colour story is blue in soft and gentle
tones of baby blue, powder blue and sky blue, which all work
to beautiful effect with the lace fashion story creating
jawdroppingly gorgeous dresses. Flowers are also still big
news. Wear them on the waistband and over bodices for
statement looks. Dresses reflect the trend with embroidered
flower detailing and even hand painted flowers on illusion
panels.
To counteract the detail and intricacy of the dresses hair is
fashionably and glamorously understated. Jenny Packham
opted for volumised low ponytails, embellished with sparkling
tiaras or birdcage veils for her models. The catwalks at Oscar
De La Renta and Marchesa also featured low key up dos and
centre partings while at Justin Alexander there were glamorous
vintage waves and sleek straight hair.
Linking in with the flower story, floral crowns are predicted to
be popular this season following the lead of some high profile
celebs who are wearing their hair like this for their big day.
Whether you wear your hair up or down depends on the dress
and feel of your wedding so it’s important to consult with your
H E A D L A M
hairdresser as early as possible when planning your look.
One of our favourite teams is Saks Hair in Darlington. All of
Saks hairdressers are highly qualified and experienced in
creating bespoke looks which will make you look and feel
absolutely beautiful on the big day. The team will spend time
consulting with you and trying out different styles to make sure
they get your final look absolutely perfect. They will consider
your face shape, hair and personal style, as well as your
theme, your day and, of course, your dress.

Gentleman style
Men are increasingly flexing their sartorial muscles
when it comes to their wedding day attire. Luxury
tailored suits with a contemporary twist and high
end accessories will continue to be seen in
menswear, along with traditional wedding suits.
Whether it’s the latest understated luxury feel or
urban dandy or country gent, the latest looks have
something for everyone.
Colour again is a big story but can easily be
adapted for a more conservative look. Colours such
as canary yellow or pink can be incorporated into
clever accessorisation for the ultimate well-dressed
gent. Think brown tweed suit with contrasting
waistcoat or a blush pink tie. One of our favourite
gentleman’s outfitters is the iconic Darlington based
tailors Affleck and Moffat. With an extensive
pedigree, this Savile Row of the North East features
fashion forward looks alongside more traditional
attire and even offers handmade suits crafted by
tailors with decades of experience.
Flower power
Impossibly romantic English Country Garden style flowers
are still big news. Think whispers of pinks, pastels and
candy colours in arrangements with texture and depth and
fashion forward touches for the ultimate bouquet. Flowers
should never be an afterthought. Cleverly used they can
transform the look and feel of venues, create drama and
theatre and translate your theme into looks which will offer
a real wow factor.
The right florist can work with your budget to produce
amazing designs which will really elevate your décor. Our
favourites are Forget Me Not Flowers and Anna Hunton
Floral Designer. Both companies are experts at creating
flowers arrangements and bouquets of breathtaking
beauty. They offer everything from fashion fabulous looks
to real statement pieces, creating a magical feel for your
big day.
Heavenly interiors
The colour scheme of your wedding can be carried into the
decor of the venue to create a totally personalised and unique
feel for your wedding ceremony and wedding breakfast.
Accessories play a huge part in creating a really special
backdrop for your celebrations. We love working with the team
at Simply Bows and Chair Covers who offer beautiful handmade
chair covers and accessories which are fashion forward and
designed to completely transform the venue into a stunning
backdrop for your big day.
With over 20 years experience, they offer a huge variety of looks
and designs or can create something bespoke just for you. They
will work with you to understand not only your colour scheme
and preferences, but also the tone and feel of your wedding,
creating interiors that are truly personal and guaranteed to
deliver the ultimate wow factor.

Motor heaven
One of the most popular trends in wedding planning is using
fabulous cars to ferry you and your guests around for the day.
From traditional Rolls to vintage VWs and buses, the choices
available are legion. For lashings of style and individuality we
recommend Lovedub cars. They have a whole fleet of VW
camper vans and cars available. All decked out in cream,
these stunning vehicles each have their own personality and
names and provide a real wow factor which gets
everyone talking.
The run up to a wedding is one of the most magical and
exciting times of your life, culminating in a day where you
celebrate your relationship surrounded by all the people you
love so make sure you enjoy every step of the wedding
planning journey. Many congratulations!
Ready for your close up…
When the big day arrives, it can often disappear into a
magical blur of memories as the day speeds by. An expert
photographer will capture the story of your day and your
relationship and give you a gorgeously beautiful album
which you will want to treasure and look back on time and
time again. Beautiful shots which capture all the special
moments and memories from your day. Forget standing
for hours in formal poses, the right wedding photographer
will create a bespoke package just for you which can
combine portraits, reportage, shots for social media and
more, the choices are endless and the results are
spectacular.
They also offer pre wedding shoots in places which have
special meaning for you or romantic foreign locations as
well as post wedding shoots. These are often ideal if you
want traditional photography on the day for your family
and relatives but something edgier and more you for your
own personal photographs. Both Stan Seaton Photography
and Camera A, based in Darlington, offer a range of
different services and produce breathtaking shots and
beautiful albums which you will want to return to again
and again. Truly talented and adept at making people feel
at ease, you will be able to preview the photography with a
glass of fizz before making your selection and seeing your
photos transformed into your very own personal story
album or works of art for your walls.
Let them eat cake
Utterly gorgeous cakes are now the order of the day with a
dazzling array of choices. Many brides are following Kate
Middleton’s example with the cake recreating elements of
the design of their dress so key trends this season are
intricate lace style looks or metallic as well as traditional
Victorian style designs. Naked cakes, tiered cakes without
the icing, can look showstopping for country style or
vintage weddings, and are a big upcoming trend. Flavours
are increasingly experimental and allow you to offer a
personal take on the classic wedding cake.
We love the cakes of top patisserie chef Chris Burnett from
Burnett 4 Cakes. Not only do they create stunningly
beautiful cakes but they offer the scrummiest flavours
imaginable. Anything goes from their deliciously moist
chocolate orange sponge to traditional fruitcake or even
gorgeous banana cake, the choice is yours.

Saks of Darlington is delighted to be the
official recommended wedding hair designer
for Headlam Hall. In 2014 this award
winning hair salon celebrated 40 years as
one of the UK’s top hairdressing salon
chains and continues to enjoy an
international clientele.
Wedding hair design is a speciality of Saks of
Darlington, where highly trained and
creative stylists personalize each bride’s hair
to co-ordinate with her dress and her special
occasion – perhaps simple and natural for a
mid-summer wedding using ivy and wild
flowers or creating the perfect hair design to
complement weddings with a theme - such
as medieval, 1920’s or 1930’s style.
Saks of Darlington’s bespoke hair dressing
service is tailor-made for each wedding and
the team of professional hair stylists can
work closely with Headlam Hall’s beauty
therapists to provide the complete wedding
hair and beauty service to make each bride’s
wedding day perfect.
With all aspects of hair dressing carefully
considered, every bride, mother-of-the-bride,
mother-of-the-groom, bridesmaid and guest
can be assured of a beautiful personalized
hair design - veils, tiaras, flowers, hair
ornaments such as feathers, gems and
crystals, hats of all shapes and sizes and
fascinators are all incorporated into the
finished look to complement each lady’s
outfit. Long hair is a speciality with curling,
styling, braiding, plaiting, fishtails and hair
extensions incorporated to achieve
stunning results.
Prior to the wedding, Saks recommends that
each bride schedules a consultation and two
hair dressing rehearsals in the salon so that
her hair can be pre-planned, practiced and
timed to perfection. However, sometimes this
is not possible, and Saks stylists are used to
working with the each member of the bridal
party on the wedding day to achieve
fabulous results. With the owner of Saks of
Darlington living close to Headlam Hall, a
call-out service is also available, so that in
addition to dressing the wedding party’s
hair on the morning of the wedding, hair
can be re-dressed for the evening
reception or pre-wedding rehearsal dinner.
Not forgetting the men, Saks also offers a
full male grooming and barbering service
with a hair cut and finish, facial massage
with exfoliation and a traditional shave
using a specialist range of Italian products
called Proraso to keep the men in the party
looking their best!

The wedding photography marketplace is
constantly changing, with clients now
expressing a desire to have a complete
record of the day, as well as an extensive
record of their friends and family and all
the finer details that make a Wedding day
truly special. Great photographers have
embraced this and endeavour to capture
the whole story as it unfolds; not
forgetting a dash of formal groups and a

the newly weds. Finding a photographer
that will provide this amount of coverage,

Simply Bows and Chair Covers specialise
in chair décor and luxury table linen for
the wedding and event sector. The
company was founded in County Durham
by Sarah Pittendrigh who has over 15
years experience in Event Management
and Design and who still runs the
Durham and Teesside office. An
emphasis on quality and customer service
has seen the company win a clutch of
national awards and grow to 11 offices
across the UK.
Simply Bows and Chair Covers have
found that their clients want to create a
theme for their wedding or event that
reflects their personal style and taste.
Many have lots of ideas about the colour
schemes, but often require support and
inspiration to pull the whole package
together. This is where our expertise
comes in with event design. We have a
huge selection of chair accessories, made
to measure poly cotton chair covers,
matching table linen and the added
advantage of being able to manufacture
bespoke products here in the North East,
should our clients require something unique
to them.
All budgets are catered for and no wedding
is too small or too large.
Every wedding we dress is as special as the
next and is lavished with care and attention
to detail, right down to hand pressing chair
covers and table linen at set up, to ensure a
pristine finish. No two weddings are the
same and we take immense pride from the
elation we get from our Brides and their
families when they see the transformation
of the room we have prepared for them.

Keeping your guests entertained
Your wedding will give the whole family
the chance to get together and
celebrate, and there are few places
better to do this than Headlam Hall.
Stay a night or two and not only can you
use the hotel’s lovely spa and gym, but
family members may wish to play golf,
tennis or go cycling or jogging in the
lovely surrounding countryside.
at Headlam for a night or two. Visit the
speciality shops and antiques emporia
of nearby market town Barnard Castle,
go for an invigorating walk in the
nearby Durham Dales, picnic at
England’s tallest waterfall, High Force,
or persuade your family or friends to
take the opportunity to visit Durham or
Newcastle, two gems of the north east,
whilst they’re here.
An early round of golf the morning of
the wedding is often chosen by the
bridegroom and his best man and
ushers as a relaxing and fun activity to
enjoy whilst the bride and her
bridesmaids are getting ready for the
ceremony. The superb 9-hole course at
Headlam is set over the mature rolling
pastureland to the east of the Hall, and
offers a wide variety of challenging yet
fun holes, with full size greens to USGA
specification.
For those who wish to venture further
afield and see something of the area,
Teesdale has many excellent attractions,
especially if family members are staying
