For over 19 years, Yurts of America has been handcrafting custom yurts, as an alternative to
regular housing.
We started building lightweight yurts for re-enactment groups like the SCA (Society for
Creative Anachronism). Based on true Mongol yurts, these first yurts would go up in under an
hour or so, weather many storms, and pack away for the next weekend when the want-to-be
Mongols could come out and play again. They were great little yurts, but in no way capable of
being left up year round or handling heavy snow. They were in fact glorified tents.
Over the years, more and more customers asked us to design a yurt that would handle all
weather and climates, while still maintaining the speed and true portability of our “reenactment” yurts. 15 years of experience and design evolution have brought us from “the ugly
one” (our first yurt made to test portability and durability), to our current 30 foot, year ‘round
yurt, able to handle the worst weather.
Today Yurts of America is proud to have the best year-round yurt on the market. Our yurts can
be set up quickly for a week long vacation or remain permanently as housing.

Portability
What good is a yurt if it isn’t truly
portable? It can be setup quickly
and securely but can also be taken
down fast and stored. You can take
it out for a weekend or for a few
months; THAT is portable.
A yurt doesn’t need a platform or
deck to set upon. Just find a flat
spot somewhere and you can be
camping, hunting, fishing, or nature
watching in style.
Most other companies’ yurts are
designed to be setup on a platform
and left up. Yurts of America are
designed not only to stand without a
platform (level ground will do), but
because of their many features, they
can go up in under a day and can be
taken down in just a few hours. (Yurt
must be anchored to ground at all times.)

How does a yurt work?
HOW can something so light weight and
simple handle weather as harsh as Gobi Desert
steppe climate, where high winds and bitter
cold is the average?
The yurt/ger frame is called a living structure.
As force is placed on one section, it is
dispersed throughout the whole frame.
So as heavy wind or snow presses on one part
of the yurt that energy is distributed over the
yurts/ger frame.
High winds have little effect on yurts;
the round design does not provide a
flat spot for the wind to push, so the
wind just passes over and around.
Many yurts/ger can handle winds up
to 100mph if setup properly.
Builder’s note: I have been in a yurt where every commercial tent was ripped or flattened. Only
my yurt and 2 other yurts were still standing. We were told that shear winds had come through
the campground at over 60 mph.

Yurts of America… the only yurt company that
offers 2 different ways to vent your yurt
Ventilation in a yurt is basic physics, hot air rises in a sealed unit. When the ring cover is
open, warm air escapes through the opening and creates a vacuum in the middle of the yurt,
which in turn draws cool air from any open sections of the yurt. This is simple yet effective.
We call it “Mongolian air conditioning.”
With a “standard” yurt design, the
airflow can only come in through the windows
and door. The fewer the windows the less
airflow there is.
This can make the yurt warmer and more
humid. The faster the air flows the faster a yurt
will cool and remove gases and condensation.
“Most yurts standard design” for venting
Most yurt makers use this design because
it is easier to make the cover and attach it to the
frame. PLUS they charge for extra windows.
For over 2500 years the
Mongols have used the same design
for venting a yurt. Lift the sides at
the bottom permitting airflow from
360 degrees. This creates a greater
escaping airflow, creating faster
escape of gases and condensation.
WE offer this system to our
customers. Under the lifting flap is
heavy-duty bug netting, which
attaches to the bottom of the yurt,
keeping the cover tight to frame.
With this design, wear and tear is
far less than with screen windows.

With all yurts, when the cover is
placed over the top ring it locks the air in
the yurt creating a convection. Warm air
rises, hits the top, and circles back down.
Soon the yurt is warming itself
from this action. It is why yurts need very
little heat to keep them warm in the winter.

Ring and Rafter

With our wonderfully handcrafted rafters you will
receive easy of set up and tear down. Our rafter and
pegs are of one piece allowing for strength and
security. This allows the benefit of stronger joints with
the roof ring for a tighter more stable fit. Our unique
design allows our yurts to be set up on level or unlevel
surfaces with out the stress of time.

Though the steel pin construction method is a
good clean way to make a yurt, we have found that
if you setup such a yurt on a uneven or unlevel
surface, “corkscrew” effect can happen. This is
where the ring starts to twist due to pressure. With
steel pins, a chance of the pin blowing out the side
of the rafter is greater. This could happen in setup
too.

When your rafter and ring are joined with our system, setup is faster, safer, and cleaner. As
time goes by the ring and rafter will lock themselves to each other, just like an old time wood
joint, making for a stronger, longer lasting yurt.

As you can see our rafters are cut at 30-degrees
to make a square break with the wall line. The
cable notch is also cut at an upward angle to
better grab the cable. This is great because the
rafter has a harder time coming off the cable
during setups and storms.

With the other companies’ rafter ends, it is
a straight cut into the back of the rafter.
You have to make sure you keep the rafter
on the cable for setup or it will fall off.

For our Rafters we use only Grade 1 Yellow pine
(not the same as SPF or “white” pine)
Yellow Pine is 870 on the hardness scale, making our
rafters some of the strongest on the market.

As you can see, Yurts of America
walls (known as “khan” to the
mongols) are thicker than most of
the other companies. Before
milling the wood is 1 ½” x ¾”,
which makes the wall 1 ½” x 1
½” at rivet point. We also use a
clean tree rivet (with no holes on
interior side) for a cleaner, more
professional look on your yurt.
Thicker walls mean longer life
and heavier stress load.

Our company only uses furniture grade Poplar wood
Yurts of America is proud to be using furniture grade poplar
for all of our yurts.

Along with our great wood, all our
walls come with our “easy setup”
interlocking wall system.
Wall sections interlock together so
you can’t go wrong, just slide the 2
sections together for a tight fit.
This same system, for joining walls
together, has been used by the
Mongals for over 2000 years
showing that some things just can’t
be improved on.

Doors
We offer 3 different door (full glass, wood, French), but custom doors are
available at your request. Above are our Mongol door (left) and French door
(right), Steel and Dutch Doors not shown (only available with 7-foot walls.
Plexiglas can be added to any door for extra fee. Slates on wooden doors can be
removed and replaced with screen and removable Plexiglas.
Yurts of America is one of the ONLY companies that use a sub-door frame with
it’s yurts. Just like on your home, we have a sub-door frame and a door-frame
making it the stongest door system on the market.

It also let you change the door without taking down the yurt. Giving you the
freedom of changing the look of the yurt without having to order the door from us.
WE now offer double size French-doors (80x72) giving you a 72 inch door
opening. This is great for vacation homes and commercial outlets.

Skin of the yurt
Yurts of America went out of the way to find the best cover we could
for your yurt at the best value.
Yurts of America basic cover is an 18 oz heavy duty, tri-layer, reinforced vinyl. All colors are UV, fire, and mildew resistant
with a 7 year warrantee. Number 2 brass or nickel-plated grommets add strength. (All vinyl meets or exceeds California fire
codes)
Our basic vinyl comes in many colors; red, yellow, burgundy, dark green, dark blue, beige, and white. (Do to summer heat in
some areas, we recommend that all tops be white for better sunlight reflection). This vinyl is the same used in semi-trucks
that travel highways in all weathers, temperatures, and conditions at 70mph. It is strong , long lasting and will give you many
years of use without falling apart.
Colors may not match due to changes in printing.
Additional colors of vinyl and canvas are available at additional cost
Please NOTE:
We use Industral grade vinyl for all of our yurts, NOT awning grade.
This makes our walls one of the stronges in the industry with a 90/70 rip strength.
Also ALL our covers have a 10 year limited warranty and meets fire codes for
most states.
