National Grandparents’ Day
Sunday, September 11, 2016
National Grandparents’ Day was founded by Marion McQuade from
West Virginia. She started her efforts in 1970, and the goal for the day
was to encourage grandchildren to learn about their heritage from their
grandparents. It was first observed in West Virginia in 1973. In 1979,
President Carter proclaimed the first Sunday after Labor Day each year
to be National Grandparents’ Day. September was selected to signify
the autumn years of people’s lives.
Ms. McQuade’s goal was:
 To honor grandparents
 To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their
children’s children
 To help children become aware of the strength, information, and
guidance older people can offer
The forget-me-not is the official flower for National Grandparents’
Day. Since this is a spring-blooming plant, seasonal flowers are given.
Reminder to our
visitors…
When visiting, please
sign in/out at the
receptionists desk in
main lobby and grab a
visitor pass.
Any resident interested in
voting...please see your

Looking for residents to submit articles
for the Hillside News. Become a roving
reporter and submit articles to
Karen in Administration by the 14th of each month.
If you would like to join the Writing Group, contact any

The group meets Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. in
the Chapel.
Back to School
I went to school, cuz I’m no fool.
We all went to classes, and we all didn’t
wear glasses.
It was a hot day and I was reminiscing about
my Sergeant York - 5th grade teacher.
A friend of mine says she was living in St. James,
not as a school teacher but as the town preacher.
As I was walking down the street carrying a
load of books,
I was all dressed up in my new clothes
wondering how I looked.
Do I have all my coloring Pencils? To trace
all my stencils.
We covered our school books with paper bags,
in those days that’s all we had.
In school we made so many friends,
we wish it didn’t have to end.
Fair
Let’s go to the Allentown Fair
And eat all the good food they
have there.
We bought tickets to see the big
show, but that’s not all.
We stopped to see farmers and
crafters in Agricultural Hall.
We saw cows, pigs, and sheep
from the local 4-H Club
And ended the day with a cold
beer from the pub.

God’s work of the day prompted a beautiful
prayer for the Autumn beauty...
This morning I went for a walk along
the tree lined path,
The green leaves of the trees had turned a
lovely shade of gold, yellow, orange, and red.
The gentle breeze had scattered them all
around the trees and made a pretty carpet.
It was a lovely scene to behold.
The masses of leaves were a great jumping
place for the children.
And all of this and the activity was a very
interesting scene for the day.

Tips for Keeping Your Money and Valuables Safe
Although we discourage residents from keeping money and valuables in their
room, we realize that many of you will choose to do so. Therefore, we would like
to offer these tips to help you keep your money and valuables safe from loss or
theft. Since you have access to the money in your account during normal business
hours Monday through Friday, we suggest that you only withdraw the amount you
need for immediate use. If you need larger sums of money for gifts or to
reimburse your family members for purchases made on your behalf, we suggest
that you contact Financial Services to arrange for payment by check. If you
choose to keep money and valuables in your room, we highly recommend that you
secure such items in the locked drawer of your bedside cabinet. Keep your key
with you, or keep your key out of sight in a safe place. As soon as you realize that
your money or property is missing, it is important to report it immediately to the
Charge Nurse. Cedarbrook will not assume responsibility for replacing missing
property kept by residents on their person or in their room. However, we will take
action to investigate, and try to recover your property if possible. Finally, we ask
that you help us maintain a current inventory of your personal property. Any
property that you purchase or receive during your stay should be added to your
Valuables Received After Admission Form, including a description of the property.
This information is essential when trying to locate missing items.
Recipes from Home
Dining Services encourages residents, family members,
and staff to participate in the Recipes from Home Program. We
are always looking for new ideas as well as those ‘old time’
favorite recipes. Recipes can be placed in the Recipe Box
outside of the Receptionist Office. Recipes could be as little
as a dessert or as big as an entrée. Get your name in the
Hillside News, by donating a recipe or you can choose to be an
anonymous participant. So go ahead and share some of those
wonderful recipes. You never know, your neighbor may enjoy
them as much as you do!!
Kitchen Tours
If you are interested in touring the kitchen, please contact
Jean from Dining Services to set up an appointment, ext. 260.
A surprise gift will be given!

Cedarbrook launched its first official website, designed to inform Lehigh County
residents - and the world at large - about the quality services and operations provided
here. It also offers dropdowns for both Allentown and Fountain Hill locations, with
directions, departmental listings and the newsletters, posted every month. On the home
page are slider segments that promote the institution and that will change from time to
time. A highlight of the front page is the “Ratings & Reviews” section at the bottom
where Cedarbrook users can submit their opinions on the quality of services. Please
visit the site often, and please let your family and friends know about it.

activities happening at Cedarbrook. We are very thankful for a summer
filled with amazing student volunteers, some of whom are family and
friends of our employees. We appreciate all their hard work and support.
You have made a positive difference in the lives of others.
Fall days are approaching quickly and so are the Cedarbrook Bazaars.
The Cedarbrook Allentown Bazaar is November 11th, and the Fountain
Hill Bazaar will be on November 18th. These bazaars take lots of help
and hard work to make them successful. We will be looking for donations
of baked items. On the day of the bazaar we will need lots of helpers to
transport residents, set-up, table workers, bakers, crafters, clean-up, and
other miscellaneous duties. Please let me know how you plan to help.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Play Pinochle or teach Residents to Crochet or Assist at Bingo - If
you enjoy being with people and making them laugh, this is the
opportunity for you. We are looking for volunteers who can play
Pinochle, Bingo or teach our residents to crochet and help brighten their
days. These activities are weekdays and about 90 minutes long.
Transport Wheelchair-Bound Residents to In-House Activities Volunteers help support our activities department by assisting residents
getting to and playing games and activities of all kinds. These
opportunities are days, evenings, and weekends. We also have occasional
bus trips for shopping, concerts, other local events and could use
volunteers to assist residents. Most activities are about 2 hours long.
Please contact Kerry at 610-336-5684 or
[email protected]
For more information or to sign up for any of these
opportunities.
