Moorelands Camp 2016 A week that lasts FOREVER! Moorelands Camp. It’s a great choice. For Toronto kids, it’s a week away from the city in a safe, caring, positive environment focusing on new friends, character and leadership development and having FUN. Moorelands is an amazing experience! Frequently Asked Questions FAQ’s from Parents Where do the children sleep? There are cabins in each of the boys and girls sections which are located on different sides of the camp. Campers of the same age share a cabin with up to 8 other cabin mates and 2 staff leaders. How long are the camp sessions? Camps start on Monday and end on Saturday. What if my child gets homesick? If your child is upset or not settling into camp, we will help him/her adjust. If the situation remains unchanged, we will contact you. What is the food like? We provide nutritious meals based on Canada’s Food Guide. Hot breakfasts, salad at lunch and supper, plus homemade bread is available every day. Vegetarian alternatives are available. If your child has special medical dietary needs, please call us to discuss the situation before applying. Moorelands is nut aware. Who are your staff? Lynda Tilley our Executive Director has been with Moorelands for 15 years. Summer staff are college and university students who have a true desire to enrich the lives of children and youth. Staff are trained in First Aid, Positive Youth Development, safety and have submitted a clear Criminal Reference Check. Program staff have current qualifications pertaining to the specialty they teach. All staff are involved in an intensive pre-camp training program to ensure they are ready to provide your child with a safe, meaningful and fun experience. How are the campers supervised? Campers are supervised by Moorelands staff 24 hours a day. Each cabin has 2 leaders and and up to 8 campers. Staff to camper ratio is 1:3 What will my child learn? Working within a cabin group, the camp focuses on leadership and character development. Together we learn about and work on character qualities – Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Citizenship, Trustworthiness and Fairness. Everyday campers work on skill building activities of their choice. Additionally there are group games and cabin activities. FAQ’s from Kids What if I don’t know anyone? Camp is a great place to make new friends and try new things! Our staff will help you make friends and feel comfortable. What are the bathrooms like? Are there showers? We have toilets that flush and showers with hot and cold water. Where will I eat? Each cabin group has its own table in the dining hall, where you eat your meals. There’s lots of good food and of course desserts! The dining hall is a fun place! What if I have a problem? You can talk to your cabin leaders, the program staff or the Directors. Camp staff are there to help you. We want you to have a great time and enjoy camp. Do I have to swim? Yes! Our lake is beautiful and clean. On the first day of camp, all campers show us their swimming ability and work to improve their swimming skills every day at our PortsToronto beach, on site. How many kids will be in my cabin group? You will have 8 cabin mates. How many other kids will be at camp? There will be about 100 other campers! Lots of new friends! PARENTS! Is your child ready for Camp? Are you? Positive Youth Development at Moorelands Camp The Search Institute has identified 40 building blocks of Healthy Development that help young people grow up healthy, caring and responsible. Our staff are trained to make a positive difference in the lives of young people by being nurturing role models and by providing a positive environment. Moorelands is located on Kawagama Lake, near Dorset, Ontario, approximately 2 ½ hours north of Toronto. It is a beautiful, natural setting with beaches and forests. The camp is divided into separate Boys and Girls Ends. Privacy is ensured for each gender. The dining hall, sports field, health centre and activity areas are centrally located for all campers. Moorelands Camp serves children and youth from Toronto who are 8 years and in grade 3 to 14 years and in grade 8. Campers should be ready for the experience of living in a group and working together, learning about leadership and having a break from the city for a week. Activities Our quality programs are based on and support Positive Youth Development. Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, arts & crafts, archery, sports and team building exercises are some of the many activities and opportunities offered to our campers. They choose 3 activities to focus on and build skills. There is an adventure for every camper. With staff supervision they enjoy a cookout or overnight campout staying in a tent. Please note: Some activities have skill or age restrictions. Swimming skills are assessed on the first day of camp. Behaviour that endangers one’s self or others disrespects the property of others or requires repeated one-toone intervention may result in the camper being sent home. Typical Day at Camp 7:30am 8am 9am 9:30 – 12:30pm 1:00pm 2:00 – 2:30pm 2:30 – 4:30pm 4:30 – 5:00pm 5:30 7:00 – 8:00pm 8:00 9:00 – 10:00pm Up you get – prepare for the day! Breakfast Cabin Clean up Morning Activities Lunch Ahh, rest time Afternoon Activities Cabin Activity Supper Evening Program (games, campfires) Snack Bedtime (depending on your age) ZZZZzzzz Transportation The bus leaves Toronto and approximately 2 ½ hours later arrives at the marina. From the marina there is a 5 minute boat ride to the camp. At the end of the camp session, the bus arrives back in Toronto where parents/guardians pick up their campers. Transportation costs are included in the subsidized camp fees. Details regarding time and location will be mailed to you with your acceptance package. Parents of campers who leave the program early will need to arrange transportation from Moorelands Camp back home for their child. How to Apply? 1. Fill out an application for each camper. (Call us at 416.466.9987 ext. 300 if you need more applications) 2. Send application, proof of income and deposit to Moorelands Community Services After we receive all your information, your application will be processed. When registered, a confirmation package (handbook and bus information) will be mailed to you. Moorelands provides opportunities for campers to: • Be physically active • Choose programs • Develop character • Gain leadership skills • Practice social skills Choosing a camp session 2016 Camp sessions start on Monday and end on Saturday. Campers, 8yrs in grade 3 to 14yrs in grade 8, grouped by age and gender are involved in a variety of activities to give them a full camp experience. When choosing a camp session, please remember that while your child is at camp, you or their emergency contact must be available in the event the camp needs to contact you about your child. Camp Dates Session 1 2 3 4 5 6 Dates July 4 - 9 July 11 - 16 July 18 - 23 July 25 – 30 August 1 - 6 August 8 - 13 Cost of Camp SUBSIDIZED FEES based on a sliding scale according to income and family size, are available and start at $25.00 per session. The actual cost is $1,150 per session. See SUBSIDY information on application form. We care for your kids! Health and Safety is #1 Campers need an Ontario Health Card. Upon arrival, each camper is seen by the camp nurse for a basic health check. All medication is kept in the health centre and is dispensed by Health Care Staff who are at the camp 24 hours a day. Leadership Camp Opportunities for High School students Preference is given to Moorelands’ campers who have shown positive leadership potential.
