O U R M I S S I O N S TAT E M E N T :
An Action Tank for national service, City Year seeks
to demonstrate, improve and promote the concept of
national service as a means of building a stronger
democracy. City Year unites a diverse corps of young
adults, ages 17 to 24, for a demanding year of full-time
community service, leadership development and
civic engagement.
Lead investors in City Year include
The Atlantic Philanthropies, Cisco Systems, Inc.,
Comcast, HP, MFS Investment Management ®,
and The Timberland Company.
City Year is a proud member of AmeriCorps.
To the City Year Community:
With a 1,000-member corps, City Year deepened its impact this year,
increasing the number of youth served via in-school partnerships by 60%, the
number served in after-school programs by more than 35%, and the number
of Camp City Year attendees by 8% over the previous year.
As we began our 14th year, we proudly witnessed more than 1,000 idealistic young leaders pledge to
serve America as City Year corps members – our largest corps yet! Inspired by the call to serve their
country, they came from 47 states and were selected from a pool of nearly 3,000 applicants. Together,
these corps members provided more than 1.2 million hours of service over the course of the year, serving
nearly 100,000 children and engaging more than 56,000 citizens.
We were delighted to welcome Comcast as a National Leadership Sponsor, partnering with us on
leadership development and training initiatives, as well as sponsoring our first-ever national public
service announcement campaign and providing more than $1 million in airtime in-kind.

City Year made great progress toward the goal of launching its 14th program in New York City in
the fall of 2003. A small start-up team led hundreds of volunteers in physical service projects, partnering
with corporate champions in New York City’s poorest neighborhoods.
This year we also marked the completion of Jeff Swartz’ eight dedicated years of service as Chair

As we look back on a very strong year of service inspired by the corps, by our service partners,
by our champions, and by the communities and nation we serve, we know that you share our vision of
making national service available to all Americans, and we know that with your help, we can make
that vision a reality. We thank you for your continued support and are pleased to present the 2003

City Year International 2002-2003
CITY YEAR EXTENDS ITS
INTERNATIONAL WORK AND MISSION
A City Year delegation was honored to accompany former
President Bill Clinton to South Africa in the fall of 2002.
The trip had two very important outcomes for City Year’s
nascent international efforts: one, that former South African
President Nelson Mandela agreed to serve as the Patron in
Chief of City Year’s work in South Africa; the other, that

borders, beginning in South Africa. With these two
extraordinary champions in place, and with the full support
of City Year’s National Board of Trustees, City Year began
a strategic and deliberate effort to extend its international
mission, work and objectives in 2003.
Initiatives now underway support City Year’s goal to be a
leading global institution for building democracy through
demonstrating, promoting, and improving the concept of
citizen service around the world. City Year is building
capacity to operate a scalable Clinton Democracy
Fellowship program, and is developing plans to launch
and manage multiple City Year sites around the world.
Building on the success of the Clinton Democracy
Fellowship, which completed its pilot program in the
summer of 2002, the 2003 Fellowship program brought
10 young leaders from South Africa to the United States
to share strategies with leading U.S. citizen service

ATLANTIC PHILANTHROPIES &
THE CITY YEAR CHALLENGE
The City Year Challenge, a campaign to build 21st century
capacities for City Year’s future, was publicly announced in
May at reception with special guests The Honorable William
J. Clinton, U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, Massachusetts
Governor Mitt Romney and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
The announcement took place at the John F. Kennedy
Library and Museum in Boston.
The investments made possible by The City Year Challenge
campaign will dramatically increase City Year’s impact,
scale, and sustainability. Equally important, the investments
will leverage the organization’s service initiatives, leadership
development concepts, and public policy initiatives to help
grow and develop the national service field in the United
States and, for the first time, internationally.
At the reception, Alan Ruby, Executive Vice President for
The Atlantic Philanthropies, announced that the foundation
was making a $10 million challenge grant to this campaign
after evaluating City Year’s rigorous two-year strategic
planning process. This grant -- the largest private gift in City
Year’s history -- must be matched two-to-one over four
years, requiring City Year to raise $20 million to receive
the $10 million in full. By the close of this fiscal year,
philanthropic individuals and institutions had committed
more than $7 million toward the challenge.

GRADUATION:
At the close of the corps year, just weeks after cyzygy, City
Year sites around the country hold graduation ceremonies.
This mid-June event is a celebration by the community-atlarge of the City Year corps members’ accomplishments
during their challenging year of service. Rather than
marking the end of their service commitment, it marks the
corps members’ transition into a lifetime of civic action as
City Year alumni. Inspirational speakers, corps member
presentations and other programmatic elements that
highlight the power of young people working together to
make a difference, make this an important milestone on
each corps member’s journey of civic engagement.

NATIONAL LEADERSHIP SPONSORS
CISCO SYSTEMS, INC.
As a National Leadership Sponsor, Cisco Systems and the
Cisco Systems Foundation have had a significant impact on
City Year's multi-year initiative to maximize technology to
help the organization grow to scale, improve operational
effectiveness, and provide City Year staff and corps
members with the technological tools to enable powerful
social entrepreneurship. Cisco has invested over $400,000 in
equipment that forms the backbone of City Year's wide area
network and has provided City Year with invaluable
technical assistance on using Cisco equipment for network
connectivity and long distance voice service through
the Internet.
In 2002, Cisco recommitted for another three years as a

In Philadelphia, the company’s corporate hometown,
Comcast is a Corporate Team sponsor of a group of corps
members working to address specific literacy and mentoring
needs in a public school through after-school programming
and Service Learning activities.
Comcast also dedicated resources to help bring
additional visibility to City Year, its mission and the impact
of its service, and to extend City Year’s message to more
young people across the country, through the production
and broadcast of a three-spot public service
announcement campaign.

professionally and personally for the entire national corps.
In partnership with City Year staff across the country, the

As City Year’s founding National Leadership Sponsor,
Official Outfitter of the Corps and strategic partner of all

America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance
about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on
a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also
includes assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well
as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audits provide a reasonable
basis for our opinion.
In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the
financial position of City Year as of June 30, 2003 and 2002, and the changes in its net assets and its cash
flows for the years then ended in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United
States of America.

two years, including at least $200,000
per year in support of initiatives at
City Year’s National Headquarters.
THE CAPACITY-BUILDING PLAN
The capacity-building plan has been
launched with a $10 million challenge

over four years, including at least ten
gifts of $1 million or more. City Year
