The compiler assures the reader that this Federal Census record varies somewhat
from that usually published since a considerable effort was made to augment the
information contained in several ways. It was compared with schedules for slaves,
mortality, taxes, and agriculture; it was found that many names were very different. It is suggested that the enumerator had poor vision and atrocious handwriting: So in a special column, after the householder's name, often appears
notice that one should also check one of the other aforementioned schedules. EWG.

Butler. 1979. Soft back.
Tennessee 38117. $7.00
98 pp.
Order from the author, 3434 McKenzie, Memphis,
The author began his search primarily to trace the descendants of Prestley Lester
Duggin and his wife, Mary Louisa Hancock, of Cannon County, Tennessee. However,
to acquaint the descendants with a more thorough history of their heritage, information available regarding the parents and grandparents of these two is also presented. Thus, the story begins in Virginia with Mary Louisa Hancock's grandfather
and in North Carolina with James S. Duggan's grandfather. The author is most
eager to have readers contribute information which could enlarge his storehouse of
knowledge about this family. In his introduction he analyses the characteristics
of these early settlers with the confidence of a native. - EWG

The Duke story is introduced with a survey of the family in England and of some

Thomas Duke, the first of this family in
Virginia, and wife, Mary Barham, had sons John and Henry. From these four the
author traces the Duke line from the early 1600's in Virginia southward into North
Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas,
Texas, and to other states. There is an index of those people with the name of
Duke and a separate index of allied surnames. Included are short early histories

which are dated from 1775-1821. This third volume is also a transcription of a
court journal which was kept for the years 1764-1771. The probate records in this
volume contain information on family relationships, administrators, locations o~
property and other genealogical material. There is a list of marriage licenses
for Dec. 1765 and 1766 in the back of the book. The index includes Parishes and
some place names. These records are from all parts of South Carolina and are an

Although white men were believed to have been in Trigg County by 1778, the county
was not formed until 1820 from Christian and Caldwell counties. A portion of land
between the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers contained a fine quality of iron ore,
therefore the county became noted for several large iron furnaces. The early
records are quite good;for example, Perrin lists the twenty-nine marriages which
occurred in the first two years. As in his other histories, this one is full of
interesting anecdotes of life in early Trigg, and is laced with names. The middle
portion holds blank pages for additional material to be added, and extensive biographical sketches follow.

This compilation of marriages from Old Abbeville Court House records is an alphabetical listing by groom and bride. Their names are taken from the book Abstracts
of Old ~ and Abbeville District, S. C. by Pauline Young, and more data on these
persons may be obtained from that book. The dates given are not necessarily the
year of the wedding, but they do indicate that these persons were married to each
other at that particular date. Since there are no marriage records in South Carolina until after 1900, this book will be helpful for finding marriages in the old
Abbeville District during this time period. These marriages should give researchers Il a beginning" in locating ancestors in this district. EDS.

original owner before he moved to Robertson County ••• perhaps the wife's maiden name,
marriage date, children, second marriage ••• or an occupation. There is a section
devoted to homes on the National Register of Historic Places. Included in this
part are rtWessyngton", built by a cousin of George Washington, "Pitt Distillery and

homes and 4 cemeteries. Sources of information presented here are; Elmwood Cemetery
original record books (the only 1866 cem. extant), J. F. Holst & Bro. funeral home
books (also original records) and microfilm of contemporary newspapers. The last
two are holdings of the Memphis Public Library & Information Center. Due to old,
hard to decipher handwriting, faint film, missing issues, etc., it is not presented
as complete, but as a supplement to any previously compiled material.
To simplify and conserve space the following codes and abbreviations have been used:

JOEL TERRELL (1726-1774), a son of Joel and Sarah Oxford Terrell, settled in
Charlottesville, VA. about 1750 and his home was at Market and Fifth Streets where
the City Hall now stands. His wife was ANNE LEWIS (1733-1835), a centenarian.
After JOEL'S death, ANNE married STEPHEN WILLIS, born 1725, as his second wife and
they moved to Rutherford Co., N.C. JOEL and ANNE were parents of 10 children:

Since the name of the elder daughter of JOEL TERRELL (1692-1752) is unknown, the
one who married EDWARD GARLAND, Mr. Cooper wants to know if the SUSANNAH TERRELL,
born 1721, was married first to EDWARD GARLAND and had eight children, was widowed
and then married secondly STEPHEN WILLIS, born 1725, and had five more children.

PARADISE RIDGE - Once a Lawless Region - Information from Mrs. Kathryn F. Henneberg!
127 OxfordRd.N.E., Atlanta, GA 30306
A long lazy pike winds its way from Nashville to a remote spur of the Cumberland
Mountains which divide Robertson from Davidson Co, TN. In 1815 after John
Robertson with his hardy pioneers blazed the trail to Nashville, BILL PARADISE
and his brother crossed the mountains from North Carolina. One brother settled
on the ridge and the other in a cove at its foot.
It was still a wild section when the KNIGHT family moved in. There were three
divisions of this family each headed by a stalwart son named William. "~BLACK
BILL", the oldest, lived a wild and disordered life near the top of the Ridge
where he farmed, raised an orchard and cultivated strawberries. He acquired
his unique sobriquet from the fact that he never wore a shirt even in winter,
and unusually black hair covered his body. "RATTLESNAKE BILL tI led an isolated
life collecting snakes, tanning their hides and selling them for pocket books
and belts. PETER KNIGHT, a War of 1812 soldier, came to the Ridge in 1817 and
fathered ,"GENTLEMAN BILL" who was still living in 1909. In middle age "GENTLEMAN aILL" was as skillful as an Indian with his bow and arrow, which he used for
shooting fish along Sycamore Creek. It is related that in the 1880's he visited
Oklahoma and so astonished an old Indian chief with his markmanship that he was
given headrights to a share in Indian lands.
(
Other early settlers were the REASONOVERS and the ADCOCKS. JAMES TIGUE and his
companion, Peggy, came in 1816 and their child was soon born on the Ridge. The
best known point on the Ridge is Crocker Springs settled by ELIJAH LANCASTER
CROCKER, an old New England sailor turned educator. Ex-Governor MURPHY ,J.
FOSTER of Louisiana, one Mississippi Governor and Judge WILLIAM HART were among
his pupils. Hogs running loose on the Ridge belonged to anyone, but as law. and
order came, they were the cause of several killings and endless lawsuits. Judge
RIDDLE of Davidson Co. threw many such cases out of court declaring that Paradisers must fight it out among themselves.
ZIMMERLEE's store is still located at a point known as Devil's Elbow where there
is a fine spring. Men still congregate there for gossip as they did in years
gone by for chicken fights and other dark crimes. One such crime was the murder
of the entire ADE family. Three sets of arrests produced only circumstantial
evidence of the culprit that wiped out this hard working, fairly well-to-do
family. Sheriff BORUM of Davidson Co. was more successful in the capture of
WASH HAINES who murdered ED MANLOVE in a tempestuous raid. Today's men are too
busy cultivating delicious strawberries, making boxes for them, marketing their
product, for such earlier crimes.
In 1909 the Ridge was in the public eye during the COOPER-SHARP trial for the
killing of Senator EDWARD WARD CARMACK. This was the birthplace of Judge WILLIAM
HART of the Davidson County Criminal Court, and the home of four members of the
Jury: FRUTIGER the philosopher, HYDE the man of honor, KNIPFER who looked as if
he had swallowed a capsule of pain and SCHUPP the German.
Mrs. RICHARD K. GARRETT tells us the first Post Office on Paradise Ridge, established about 1880, was known as Ridge Post until 1902. It was located where
EUGENE BAXTER lived in more recent years.

Family Gatherings (continued)
One of the older landmarks on the Ridge is the Forest Grove Methodist Church,
four miles from Joelton on the Springfield highway. Mrs. LUCY HOBBS gave an
acre for a church which was built in the 1870s, and she gave another acre for
a cemetery. JIM COOPER, Sr. was appointed architect, and liberal donors of
both time and money were CAGE WILKINSON, GIL REASONER and ANDREW DRAKE. Many
in the community denied the necessities of life to their families to build
this place of worship.
This one room log structure served as a school during the week and a place of
worship on Sunday. Hard times befell the church in 1883 when they had no
preacher except a beloved circuit rider, JAMES D. CRAWFORD, who held a revival
there. This proved to be a turning point in the life of the church, and it was
restored to the regular circuit. Names appearing on the deed of the church were
WILLIAM A. KNIGHT, WASHINGTON AGENT (sic.) BILBESH M. REASIONER, J. REASIONER,
JOHN HENRY MYERS and WHITEFIELD PITTS.

CHILES - MOORE Families - Information from Mrs. Marvin Lee Moore, 1123 Elmdale
Place, Dallas, TX 75224
Abstract of will of PAUL CHILES, Sr. of Giles Co, TN - being of sound mind and
memory - all my lawful debts to be paid. All property, real and persona1~ to
be equally divided between my nine children or their legal heirs: FRANCES
CARUTHERS, NANCY MOORE, JOHN CHILES, PAUL CHILES, SARAH COLLINS, HENRY CHILES,
ANN HICKS, LUCINDA JONES, ROWLAND CHILES. Exc - F. M. KERSEY to be paid for
his services, to give bond but no security. 13 Feb 1877 Witness: J. C. MOORE
and JNO. R. MOORE.
AUSBURN R. MOORE born 22 October 1811, died 26 May 1858, married about 1831/2
NANCY CHILES born 25 May 1810, died 15 April 1888. Both buried in Diana Cemetery near Brick Church, Giles Co, TN. AUSBURN R. MOORE was in Anderson Co,
TN in 1831 at an estate sale of WILLIAM LAMAR, along with several known sons
of JAMES MOORE and SUSANNE EPPERSON MOORE. In the 1830 census of Anderson Co,
TN, JAMES MOORE had one son living in his household who would have been the
correct age for Ausburn. The continued use of the names Austin, James and
Joseph down this family line leads one to believe that AUSBURN R. MOORE was a
son, ~randson or nephew of the Rev. _~o~9-ier JAMES MOORE and wife, SUSANNE
(
AUSBURN R. MOORE bought land in Giles Co, TN in 1837 and in 1840 he had two sons
and two daughters. The 1850 census of Giles Co, p. 1012 #1441 shows his family.
After Ausburn's death in 1858, his widow Nancy was in the 1860 and 1870 census
of Giles Co, TN. She was still living in 1880 but her name was not found in the
census. The 1860 census #1073-1073 shows NANCY MOORE's family including Osborn
(Ausburn) age 21 (he married in 1861 NANCY E. YOUNG).
The Moore Family Bible contains the following records.

TENNESSEE OBITUARIES FROM HOLLY SPRINGS (MISSISSIPPI) REPORTER
Contributed by R. F. Simpson, Jr.
Aug. 31, 1882 - OBIT - In memory of Mrs. Sarah S. Powell who died in Marshall Co. on June
18, 1882 age 77 years. She was married to Thomas Powell in Rutherford Co., Tenn. in 1826 and moved
to Marshall Co. in 1836 where she spent most of the remainder of her life. She joined the Methodist
Church in 1842 and remained a member until her death. She was mother of 12 children; six of them
gone before her to that house not made by hands.
Oct. 6, 1887 - OBIT - By a letter received here Wednesday we were pained to learn that Mr. John B.
Hicks died near Conyersville, Tenn. at the residence of his son-in~law Mr. R. G. Kirby on Sunday
morning last at 5 o'clock. Mr. Hicks had been in feeble health for a long time and was so much so
when he left here early in the summer with his daughter Mrs. Hooper that his friends felt he could
never rally. He was a native of Greenville Co., VA whence his parents emigrated to Henry Co., Tenn.
when he was a small boy. From there he came to Marshall Co., Miss. where he married a Miss Hatchell
and remained until after her death. He then went to Memphis where he was a member of the firm of
Hicks, Anderson & Co. and Hicks, Terry and Co. until the war (Civil War) when he moved back to
Marshall Co. where he remained until Majr. Hooper came with his family to this place when he
accompanied them and has continued a member of their household ever since. He joined the Methodist
Church a little more than a year ago. He was buried in the family burying ground near where he
died and where his parents and other loved ones have long slept the sleep of the just. He was born
in 1811 and was near 77 years old. (From - Sardis Reporter)

has written to say that the latter surname should be SUTPHEN. She gives further information on the Sutphen family.
John S. Sutphen married Matilda W. Chrisman, daughter of David and Jemima, in Willia~
son County, Tennessee on 13 Jl,lne 1833. He bought land in the area of this cemetery
on 14 February 1835, but is thought to have been there earlier. He signed a bill
for a slave that was hanged in 1833. The Sutphens moved to Texas in 1850, after the
birth and death of their infant son on lO January 1850. The marker in Coffee County
is for this infant. John S. and Matilda are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Nacogdoches,
Texas.
