From the President
As I look forward to warmer weather and the fresh renewal that
spring brings, I must also reflect on the many accomplishments
of the Waco Symphony Council (WSC) members and volunteers
as we commenced 2015.
When we last met (via newsletter), we were looking forward to
the annual Children’s Concert in November and the Celebrity
Conductor Contest fundraiser and its reveal at the December
Waco Symphony Orchestra (WSO) Holiday Magic Concert.
Once again, the Children’s Concert was a great success with approximately 5,700
students attending. It delights me that the WSC is focused on the importance of
Youth Education and we continue to offer this worthwhile program to the children of
Central Texas. Thank you to Jane Allen and Norma Tandy, Chairmen, and the many
volunteers that lent a hand.
The Celebrity Conductor Contest was a fabulous fundraiser that brought the
community together in support of the Council and the WSO. Melissa Boss, VP of
Fundraising, and Tanya Clark, Chairman, did a tremendous job. As you know by now,
the contest winner was Dr. Johnette McKown, President of MCC. Thank you to Dr.
McKown and the other contestants, Kim Mulkey and Ed Sorensen, for their great
campaigns and dedicated time. Thanks to you, the council members, for your
enthusiasm and financial support.
The new year began on a social high note. Special thanks to the VP of Socials, Sara
Moore and the Patron Dinner Chairman, Gretchen McCormack, for coordinating and
hosting a wonderful appreciation dinner at the Baylor Club in January. It was an
evening of fine food and fellowship. We depend on and are grateful for our Patron
Level sponsors!
Please mark your calendars for the upcoming Previews/General Meetings that will be
held March 17th and April 12th. May 5th will be the Officer Installation Lunch and
General Meeting. We hope you will attend.

November Preview Party and General Meeting
We wish to thank Mrs. Carol Treese for hosting the November Preview Party and General
meeting at her beautiful home in Woodway on November 9 th. The late afternoon party was
well-attended, and guests were welcomed to an ample buffet of hors d’oeuvres and beverages.
The preview of the November symphony concert was presented by Maestro Stephen Heyde. The
guest performer for November 19th was Alessio Bax, pianist. We are grateful for the wonderful
group of council members who served as volunteer hosts for the evening. They kept the tables
filled with the delicious food, most of which was prepared by the volunteers themselves. Those
who assisted Carol Treese in the kitchen were: Becky Aydelotte, Julie Battles, Lisa Smyers, Amber
Sheehan, Rita Hull, Lynn Allen, Glenda Bain, Janyce Haskett, Kelly Karnei, Christi Young, Kay
Metz and Debbie Thornton. These wonderful parties would not be possible without our helpful
volunteers!

Upcoming Preview Luncheon and General Meeting
Celebrity Conductor Contest and
Other Fundraising News
The Celebrity Conductor Contest was a huge success! Our contestants used their
talents and time to gather support from the Waco community on behalf of the Waco
Symphony Council and the Waco Symphony Orchestra. They were extremely generous
and we cannot thank them enough. After expenses, we raised over $17,000 through the
contest. As you will recall, the contestants were Dr. Johnette McKown, President of
McLennan Community College, Kim Mulkey, Lady Bears Head Basketball Coach, and Ed
Sorensen, former news anchor for KWTX television. Dr. McKown was the winner and she
did a wonderful job conducting Sleigh Ride at the holiday concert “Holiday Magic”.
Also, as you were hopefully made aware, February 15 and 16 were the dates of the
Worth Trunk Show at the home of Valerie and David Fallas. Worth is donating 10 % of
all sales to the WSC. We are pleased to announce that we made approximately $800 for
the WSC during the event.
Belle and Brass News
The Waco Symphony Belles and Brass have had a busy year. They have had the opportunity to serve as ushers at
symphony concerts, gain musical knowledge through an appreciation class, work together while making new friends at a
ropes challenge course, and enjoyed a formal dining experience at an etiquette luncheon held at Ridgewood Country
Club. A big thanks to Alfredo Colman, Eastland Lakes and the Baylor University Outdoor Adventure staff, and Sarah
Aynesworth for leading these events.
The Belle and Brass year will culminate with the formal presentation at the March 19th concert. We are excited to
present this group of outstanding young people and hope you will join us for this exciting evening. The reception will be
held at the Lee Lockwood Library on Waco Drive immediately following the concert.
A special congratulations to Curtis Cook, 2016 Brass for winning a Visa gift card for selling the
most Celebrity Conductor Contest Votes!
