A.B. Brooks Nature Hike
1-mile, 1-hour program, by appointment
20 people maximum
What is a Nature Hike?
Nature Hikes are part of a long tradition of nature study in Oglebay Park.
Nature Hikes began on the property with West Virginia’s first forester, A.B.
Brooks, who went on to lead over 50,000 such hikes on the trails throughout
Oglebay Park. Though hikes focused on natural history, they were often as
much a venue for socialization and the sharing of ideas.
Today the knowledgeable staff of the Schrader Environmental Education
Center leads groups along those same trails. Our hikes are perfect for
groups looking to stretch their legs and explore the scenic forests of Oglebay
Park, while getting to know a little about the flora and fauna of the Eastern
United States. Topics covered include seasonal wildflowers, regional trees,
local mammals, migratory birds, and forest ecology. Groups are encouraged
to come with questions and curiosity, which the staff of the nature center
can help answer.
What to Expect?
The Schrader Center staff will lead groups of up to 20 participants
throughout the trails located behind the Schrader Center. Because
participants will be hiking outdoors rain or shine, it is recommended to wear
comfortable, closed-toe shoes and clothing that is weather-appropriate.
Sunglasses are a plus! The Schrader Center will provide field guides and
binoculars for participants.
Cancellation Policy
The Schrader Center staff puts a great deal of time and effort into preparing
and executing quality, nature-focused programs for our participants.
Because we reserve a time slot on our programming schedule and because
the majority of the prep work goes into the program prior to participants
arriving, we require groups to provide notice of cancellation one week in
advance of the program date. There is a $125 minimum fee due if the
program is cancelled after the one-week deadline.
Please contact us at 304-242-6855 to customize a nature hike for your
group or to receive more information.

Equine Interpersonal Communication
IT’S A CHANCE TO REFRESH THE TEAM
“There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the
inside of a man”. (Winston Churchill)
Effective team building happens when the group identifies the issues
they are facing, when activities are not competitive, when activities are
fun, and when the activities are memorable. Let equine assisted team
building help your team be more productive, establish goals, develop
leadership, deal with conflict, or develop long-range plans. An Equine
Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) certified team will work with your group. Using an
experiential learning model, you will interact with horses (no riding is involved) to work on goals identified by
your team.
IT’S A CHANCE TO EXPLORE INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
“If your horse says no, you either asked the wrong question,
or asked the question wrong.” (Pat Parelli)
People often ask…”why horses?”
Horses mirror our attitudes and actions. They challenge us to be honest with what is going on within ourselves,
and with others. The EAGALA team is comprised of a mental health specialist, an equine specialist and
horses (or ponies). Using structured interventions the team challenges participants to draw on their own
strengths to solve problems that are metaphors for life. Your team has the answer to its own problems-you
simply need help discovering those solutions.
IT’S A CHANCE TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
“A horse loves freedom. The weariest old work horse will roll on the ground or break into a lumbering gallop
when he is turned loose in the open”. (Gerald Rafferty)
$150 per hour (up to 10 participants)
$10 per each additional participant (up to 25)
25 participants per session maximum
1 hour minimum (2 hours suggested)
All rates subject to applicable additional fees and taxes.

Archery Group Sessions
1 hour program, by appointment only
10-15 people maximum
What is Archery?
Archery is the art or skill of propelling arrows with a bow toward an intended
target. A person who participates in archery is typically referred to as an
archer or bowman, and one who is an expert at archery can be referred to
as a “toxophilite”. While archery has traditionally been the sport of
huntsmen, in modern times it has become a recreational activity enjoyed by
all age groups.
What to Expect?
The programs, taught by senior naturalist and resident toxophilite Greg
Park, are targeted to adults at all skill levels. Participants are instructed in
proper shooting technique, form, range estimation, safety and more.
Equipment is provided and participants should wear comfortable, closed-toe
shoes and clothing that is weather-appropriate.
