with all new additions. Food trucks,
the climbing Rock Wall, and a fireworks finale, that signals continued
expansion of the “Best Small Town
Festival in Southern Arizona.”

History of Anamax Park
A
namax Park, site of Sahuarita’s 20th Anniversary Festival, exemplifies how good
things can happen when disparate
interests work together.
Long before there was a town,
there was Anamax, anchoring the
community’s southwestern corner,
sandwiched between what is now
La Canada Drive and Interstate 19,
north of Duval Mine Road.
As a park, Anamax wasn’t much,
with minimal playground equipment and a couple relatively flat,
rock strewn ball fields.
Anamax Mine, owner of the property, let residents keep livestock on

built on the east side so weekend

friendly competitions with neighbors.
Retired high school industrial arts
teacher Charles Oldham recalls the

He helped build a new Sahuarita
elementary school in 1958 while attending Catalina High School. After
working a couple years, he attended
Eastern Arizona Junior College, then
Northern Arizona University, where
he received his teaching degree.
He began teaching in Sahuarita in
1969 and was principal of the junior high school when school superintendent Ken Gose got the ball
rolling for development of Anamax
Park in the late 1970s. The mining
company was willing to cede the
property to the community with

park. The company worked with the
school district because it was the
only public agency in the community at the time.

To celebrate the Town’s 20th Birthday, the Town Manager Kelley Udall wanted to do something different
and special at Fiesta Sahuarita. This got the creative energies started with the town staff and thus came
the idea for the Fiesta Mural. This mural was created from past highlights at Fiesta Sahuarita. It is a
collage of pictures and activities that typically occur at Fiesta. The Mural includes two 8’x4’ boards that
will be at the event to be painted by
the community in paint by numbers
fashion. Once complete the boards
will be put together and preserved
by Plexiglas so it can be hung in the
breezeway at Town Hall for all to
enjoy. This mural is the perfect way
to promote community togetherness
while preserving the memories of
one of the best small town events in
Southern Arizona.

submission and then build the costume. Our Fiesta Sahuarita Mascot
will keep the town’s birthday top of

After the 2013 Fiesta Sahuarita the
Town staff determined we needed
something to trademark the event. With
some brainstorming, the
idea of having a Fiesta Sahuarita Mascot was born.
The new Mascot will not only represent Fiesta, but it will represent
the Town of Sahuarita as a whole!
To create our Mascot the Fiesta Sahuarita committee challenged area
residents to design our Mascot.
In early September the Fiesta Sahuarita committee
reviewed all the Mascot entries. After lots of discussion voting ensued and the
winning Mascot was chosen. This
Mascot will highlight Fiesta Sahuarita for years to come.

Ballot Measures 2014

F
or the past several years, the
Sahuarita Unified School
District #30 has operated
under two local voter approved levels of support.
The first of the measures, called
a Maintenance and Operations
(M&O) override, is targeted at specific organizational objectives, including:
K-12 fine arts programs - SUSD
schools offer general music, band,
orchestra, and chorus as part of
the regular curriculum.
K-12 physical education programs - All SUSD schools have a
fully certified professional educator in physical education. Physical education is part of the general
instructional program in support
of health and the total growth and
development of students.
Career & Technical Education
(CTE) - SUSD offers about a dozen modern programs in applied
fields including culinary arts, automotive technology, construction technology, precision manufacturing/ robotics, health professions, audiovisual/ multimedia,
business management, nursing,
photography, and fire sciences.
The District is currently working with Pima Joint Technological Education District (JTED),
Pima Community College, and
many of the region’s major business partners to build a new program in industrial technology,
which includes electrical power
transmission, diesel technology,
and heavy equipment operations.
These 21st Century programs support integrated authentic learning,
college readiness, and workforce
development.
NJROTC - This leadership development program teaches strong
leadership skills, physical education, academic success, community service, citizenship, character, and patriotism.
K-12 school guidance programs
- Every SUSD school has at least
one fully certified school guidance
counselor. These professionals
deliver a competency based guidance curriculum. This program
addresses important life skill areas such as drug abuse prevention, conflict resolution, communication, stress management, and
problem solving. Furthermore,
guidance counselors provide targeted support to students, college
and career advising, and crisis
response services to students, as
needed. This supports student
wellness and the total process of
delivering outstanding education.
Campus safety and supervision school safety monitors are at every school and provide additional
visibility, proximity, and student
service.
K-3 class size reduction - In support of individualized instruction
and advancing a sound academic
foundation for all students, the
override targets the goal of class
sizes at approximately twenty
students for kindergarten, and
enrollments in the mid twenties
for grades 1-3. Furthermore, the
District has chosen to offer full
day kindergarten programs for all
students.
The second assessment, formerly a capital outlay override, and
now called a District Additional Assistance (DAA) override,
supports needed capital investments that are directly tied to
instruction and critical school
functions. These include:
Textbooks - New academic standards require schools to regularly
identify updated, modern resources as tools to meet the learning
needs of students in preparation
for new State assessments and educational outcomes.
Instructional technology - Modern technology resources are integral to major initiatives such
as Beyond Textbooks, Galileo
individualized student assessments, digital literacy curricular
programs, online instruction initiatives, and general instruction
for 21st Century learning. This
includes intentional initiatives to
personalize instruction for every
student.
Classroom furniture - As a growing school community, SUSD is
continuing to prepare new and update classrooms that have safe, up
to date, and sufficient equipment,
such as desks, chairs, laboratory
equipment, musical equipment,
and athletic equipment.
Building renovations - These
DAA funds also support needed
building renovations such as mechanical units, new roofs, and carpeting. The proactive and intentional replacement and renewal
of these physical resources is also
critical for excellent service, student and staff safety, and efficient
use of financial resources.
School buses - The DAA funds
also pay for the methodical purchase of school buses, which
systematically supports quality
service and safety. School buses
in SUSD currently log
over 650,000 miles
annually. The
District is committed to operating transportation services in buses
that are
m e chanically
sound, safe,
well maintained and
up to date.
For the last
four years, and
going forward,
bus purchases are
being made for vehicles that are equipped with air
conditioning functions.
In the last several years, the District has lost the majority of its allocated State capital funding for such
purposes to State budgetary reductions. For example, for this fiscal
year, the Sahuarita School district
was allocated about $2,600,000 in
funding for capital expenditures.
However, the State reduced this
amount by about $1,600,000, leaving the District with only approximately $1,000,000 for the entire
scope of capital needs for the year.
The local investment of the override allows the district to continue meeting basic service needs in
regards to capital outlay.
Students, staff, programs and the
greater community have been recognized at the State and National
levels for educational and professional excellence, and achievement
in these areas. For example, the robotics and construction technology
programs have both had programs
and students win at Skills USA competitions at both State and National
levels. The NJROTC unit qualified
for the regional JROTC “Super
Bowl” competition in California,
and continues to be designated as a
Distinguished Unit. Our interscholastic programs are an important part
of

total educational
experience.

year. A recent Walden
Grove HS student athlete,
and now alumnus, Trey Cashion,
earned two State titles in swimming
last year, just two years after the

Feldman said beverages are
dispensed in 32-ounce tin cups for
$8. The same size steel cup is $10.
Refills are $4. An 18-ounce red,

s Sahuarita turned 20, a
tepid economy found the
town’s business and real
estate development growth wasn’t
much more than a blip over the past
12 months, compared to the rush of
activity in fiscal years 2002 through
2009, but recent tallies hint of better
days ahead.
Business licenses issued in fiscal
2013, surpassed the previous year,
as did building permits, according
to town officials. While the number
of fiscal-year 2013 permits for
single-family residences surpassed
fiscal 2012 totals, fiscal 2014 saw
permits issued dip to 855 from
859 and permits for single-family
residences drop to 169 from 267.

licenses in fiscal year 2013,
compared to 1,045 the previous
