In my last Principal’s letter, I gave a background of the last 150 years in
California Adult Education and the main focal points mandated by the
California legislature for our future work. In addition, I introduced you to the
STC (The North Santa Clara County Student Transition Consortium) of which
FUHSD Adult School, Palo Alto Adult, Mountain-View Adult, and DeAnza
College and Foothill College are members.
At this time, I’d like to:
A. Give you more details about our STC action plan and
B. Invite you to give comments digitally or in person.
STC’s Action Plan Objectives:
1. Set up a coordinated system that allows students to seamlessly move between systems and into the workforce;
2. Align and share applicable assessments;
3. Establish a student data-tracking system including individual student learning plans;
4. Remove barriers to student access and educational/employment goals;
5. Provide student support through mentoring, supplemental instructional support, and case management;
6. Ensure that staff and faculty have the tools and resources to effectively work with transitioning students;
7. Increase business and industry partnerships to enhance student opportunities for apprenticeships, mentorships, job shadowing,
and employment.
Details about the action plan items for these objectives can be found on
our STC website at: http://www.foothill.edu/swbacpc/ab104.php.
If you have an idea, concern, need that falls in one of the above objective
areas, please share that with our consortium by
a. posting on our Facebook page
(https://www.facebook.com/NorthSantaClaraCountySTC/?fref=ts) or
b. emailing your thoughts to me at [email protected]
c. or joining us on February 26th, 2016 for a public comment session with the STC Board. You can find details on this meeting in January on either our Facebook page, STC Website, or our Adult School website at ace.fuhsd.org.
I look forward to what the future holds and to hearing from our community
on a regular basis. Meanwhile, have a safe and wonderful
new year!

English Language Acquisition/ESL
Do you need to learn English and improve
how you speak, read and write in English?
The state of California is funding English
classes at FUHSD Adult School for adults
who grew up speaking a language
other than English. There is a range of
classes to meet a variety of needs—from
students who have had little exposure to
English to those who have a background
in English and just need to improve their
skills. A test will determine which class is
best for each student.

English but lack fluency. This level begins to infuse
more complicated reading and writing.
Advanced English: This level of English
has students read, write and speak English at a
level that will allow them to transition into our
Adult Basic Education courses entitled English
Fluency.
ABE: Beyond Advanced
English to English Fluency*
Students completing Advanced ESL may
transition to ABE. This English series accelerates
the student’s academic and workplace English in
reading, writing, speaking and listening.
A portion of these classes focus on accent
reduction for improved job success. Students
who complete English Fluency are then
eligible to enter our Adult Secondary
Education program to work on their United
States High School Diploma or transition to
college and career training programs.

Appreciating Dreams
Enrich your life with the wisdom of dreams! In this
group approach to exploring dreams, students
will learn to understand deeper aspects of self
through appreciation of the images, feelings,
and information in the dreams. We will use
the Ullman approach to working with dreams,
which recognizes that only the dreamer can
know the meaning of the dream. Other people
in the class will provide their responses to the
dream, allowing the dreamer to gain a variety of
perspectives about his or her dream.
Each week one of the students will bring printed
copies of a dream to share with the group. Using
the Ullman process, which maintains the authority
of the dreamer over the meaning of the dream and
the dreamwork process, the class will work with
the dream. At the end of the evening, all copies
of the dream will be returned to the dreamer. I
will provide a short handout that summarizes the
stages of the dreamwork process. The goal of the
class is to appreciate dreams. Students will know
how to work with their dreams and dreams of
others in an authentic manner that respects the
autonomy of the dreamer. Sandy has a graduate
level certificate in Dream Studies from Saybrook
