Feyenoord Rotterdam [Feyenoord Academy] About Feyenoord In the document in front of you we present to you Feyenoord, the Feyenoord Academy and its philosophy and methodology as they relate to our soccer operations. You will briefly learn about our humble beginnings, past and present as well as the #1 Dutch soccer academy! Feyenoord Rotterdam is one of the two biggest football clubs in the Netherlands, a football crazy country that has been producing top players and teams for a long time. ‘The Dutch school’ of football is known for its attractive style of play and its excellent youth and talent development systems. In spite of the Netherlands’ relatively small population it is a world power in footballing terms having reached no less than three World Cup finals in the last 40 years. Feyenoord itself was founded in 1908 by a group of friends from humble Rotterdam backgrounds. In De Vereeniging café, eleven working class young men then laid what would prove to be very solid foundations. In just over a hundred years the band of brothers transformed into an internationally known and respected institute, playing in one of the most authentic and loved stadiums of Europe. Feyenoord is a football club open to anyone and its fan base transcends the city and even the country’s limits. One can find registered Feyenoord fans in ALL Dutch cities and abroad. All of them are renowned for their loyalty to their club. In 1970 Feyenoord became the first Dutch to lift a major European trophy, when it conquered the European Cup (which is known as the Champions League today). Feyenoord was also the first Dutch club to win the Intercontinental Cup (1970) as well as the UEFA Cup (1974, nowadays known as the Europa League). In the Netherlands Feyenoord was the first club to win a ‘double’: in 1965 the Rotterdam outfit conquered both the league and the Dutch FA Cup. Feyenoord was the last Dutch club to win a European trophy after defeating Borrussia Dortmund in 2002, when it bagged its second UEFA Cup. Nationally, Feyenoord has amassed a total of 14 league titles as well as 11 FA Cups. Feyenoord continues to attract sell-out crowds to every home game. Proof of the loyalty of tens of thousands of supporters to that indescribable feeling, the triumph of passion and appetite for hard work surely best exemplified by the club anthem, powerfully sung time and again by the faithful: No Words, Just Actions. STARS OF THE PAST Over the years many famous players have graced the red and white shirt. Feyenoord’s faithful fans have enjoyed the talents of such international stars as Coen Moulijn, Wim Jansen, Willem van Hanegem, Johan Cruyff, Ruud Gullit, Ronald Koeman, Pierre van Hooijdonk, Henrik Larsson, Robin van Persie, Dirk Kuyt, Salomon Kalou, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Jonathan de Guzman, Roy Makaay and, of course, coach Ernst Happel, a legend in his own lifetime. FEYENOORD IN THE COMMUNITY Feyenoord’s deep social commitment is there for all to see. The club has an extensive corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, run under the flag of the Feyenoord Foundation. The magic of football is used to change lives! Feyenoord has developed and currently run programmes here in Rotterdam to fight obesity, help social inclusion, engage youngsters and keep them in school. The club also fights unemployment together with the city and in general uses people’s passion for Feyenoord and football to promote a healthy lifestyle and good citizenship. In 2012 Dutch Prime Minister, his Excellency Mr. Mark Rutte, visited the Feyenoord Stadium in support of the club’s educational program. ‘This is a method that works and I would strongly recommend it’, he stated while visiting the ‘Giovanni van Bronckhorst academy’. Here, children with a learning disability get extra support in order to keep them motivated and work on their learning difficulties. In another program, the players of Feyenoord work together with the staff of the Erasmus MC Sophia Childrens’ hospital with the aim of bringing smiles to children and their relatives going through difficult times, while promoting the work of the hospital and raising funds for improvements. In 2012 Feyenoord also started one of many new projects: the ‘Feyenoord Street League’. A grassroots competition among children from disadvantaged neighbourhoods in which good citizenship is equally important as performing on the pitch. ‘We is better than me’ is the motto of this highly inspirational football event for children between 9 and 12 years of age. Feyenoord educates, motivates and inspires! FEYENOORD ACADEMY Robin van Persie, one of world football’s greatest stars, is by far the best known player to have come from the Feyenoord Academy. Former Dutch captain and FC Barcelona-star Giovanni van Bronckhorst is another well known exponent of Rotterdam born and raised talent, as there are many more players in international top football who are well rooted in the Feyenoord Academy. In the last decade or so the number of players produced by the Feyenoord Academy ready for first team football has significantly risen to the point where home grown players are now the foundation of not only the first team of Feyenoord but also of the Dutch national team. Secret to the success is the unique Feyenoord Academy vision, philosophy and methodology with its focus on individual development. Even with limited resources the Feyenoord Academy manages to bridge the gap between youth football and the highest level. It is exactly for this reason that the Royal Netherlands Football Federation (KNVB) has awarded Feyenoord for having THE BEST YOUTH SYSTEM IN THE NETHERLANDS for an unprecedented FIVE YEARS IN A ROW now! Furthermore, in 2012, 2013 and 2014, the Feyenoord Academy was the principal purveyor of players to all Dutch national youth selections and even for the Dutch national team. In Brazil for the World Cup 2014, Feyenoord produced 11 out of 23 Dutch National Team players. Pre World Cup selection featured 14 out of 30 Feyenoord current and former players. Below: Picture of the Feyenoord 5 current (season ’13/’14) and 6 former players. As such, it is exemplary for clubs and federations across the world. Below are some inserts from a study done during the World Cup in Brazil 2014. Player Development Ranking – World Cup 2014 Inserts continue….. Notes in accordance with the research group study : Four players Stefan de Vrij (defender), Bruno Martins Indi (defender), Terence Kongolo (defender) and Jordy Clasie (control midfielder) came directly out of the first team selection from the Rotterdam club. Dutch superstar Robin van Persie (striker), Jonathan de Guzman (midfielder, born in Canada and moved to Feyenoord at the age of 11), Leroy Fer (attacker) and Georginio Wijnaldum (attacker) also played in famous De Kuijp. They also played for various youth teams at Varkenoord. The ninth player is Salomon Kalou (midfielder), an oldFeyenoorder who represented Ivory Coast in the World Cup 2014. See on the next page complete rankings by world clubs! *It is important to note that Daryl Janmaat (defender) also came out of Feyenoord Academy and so did Ghana’s Christian Atsu and Harrison Afful! Extracted from a website: www.football-observatory.com Link: http://www.football-observatory.com/IMG/pdf/wcs2014_development_en.pdf Credits for the success go to the highly qualified staff of the Feyenoord Academy, which consists of an ideal mixture of former top players and specialists. Their unique vision on developing, training and motivating young talents guarantees a continuous production of players fit for the highest level and capable of getting the maximum out of their potential. The objective is to produce two players each season who are ready for first team action, but this number has been surpassed in the past five seasons. Feyenoord Academy is producing the stars of the future and is ready to leverage vision and tools to contribute to the further development of football elsewhere. Picture above: Themed pre game. STARS OF THE PRESENT The core of the current Feyenoord squad is formed by home grown players, many of them still young at age but already fully capped internationals. Players like Bruno Martins Indi, Stefan de Vrij, Jordy Clasie, Daryl Janmaat, Tonny Vilhena, Jean Paul Boetius , Erwin Mulder, Kostas Lamprou, Sven van Beek, Miquel Nelom, Terence Kongolo, and Anass Achahbar are the stars of the present Feyenoord, together with experienced players like the prolific Italian goalscorer Graziano Pellè, winger Ruben Schaken and up and coming international talents such as Harmeet Singh. Feyenoord raised players like Leroy Fer, Jeffrey Bruma, Georginio Wijnaldum, Luc Castaignos, Nathan Ake, Karim Rekik, Jerson Cabral, Kyle Ebecilio and Jonathan de Guzman are still young but already ply their trades elsewhere than in the famous De Kuip stadium. As almost all of these players play for the senior or youth national selections, they might very well be the stars of the future in international top football. Continue to follow Dutch internationals at the World Cup level. FINAL REMARKS In order to be able to turn our vision into reality Feyenoord Academy - which works with children in the age groups from Under 8’s till Under 19’s - has an extensive number of tools at its disposition, such as training schedules, training sessions, periodization, cooperation with schools and a large number of specialists (coach running, coordination and stability, goalkeeper coach, striker coach, performance video analysis, dietician, sport psychologist). Vigorously implementing the Feyenoord Academy vision methodology has had the following results: a top class program, raised player awareness, fitter & fresher players (enormous decrease in number of injuries), delivering highest number of players to Youth National Teams and delivering many players to first team squad (17 out the 28 players in the first team squad this season). Feyenoord Rotterdam and Feyenoord Academy see a bright perspective for our potential partners in football and the role that football plays in a society. We strive for quality and long term cooperation, built on mutual trust, partnership and benefit to all parties involved. For the good of the game and the good of the people!
